International Women’s Day Breakfast
Jane O’Reilly was the guest speaker at the Canungra Chamber of Commer international Women’s Day Breakfast held at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards. Jane kept the crowd of over 100 women enthralled as she told the story of the women (and men) who have created the O’Reilly’s brand today. The O’Reilly family has always had tenacious, tough women behind what was a guesthouse in the early days and later became the retreat that is world famous today. As Jane recounted the history of the guesthouse, the audience marvelled at the hard work the O’Reilly women put into the venture, particularly in the very early years. Many of the women shared traits that seemed to be carried from generation to generation - resiliant, headstrong and practical women who supported the busines through hard work and tenacity. Today the third generation of O’Reilly family are heavily involved in the management and running of the business, with Shane O’Reilly the Managing Director. Jane said O’Reilly’s continues to be a family run concern with the fourth generation starting to work in a variety of areas within the business.

New Command Team at Kokoda Barracks
The Army’s Land Warfare Centre at Kokoda Barracks has a new command team, with Colonel Arran Hassell taking over as Commandant and Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Patà taking over as Chief of Staff in January. Colonel Hassell has a long history with Kokoda Barracks with this being his third posting to the base. Colonel Hassell and his family also live locally in their own home on Mount Tamborine. “I remember first coming to Canungra as a cadet in 1996 and loving the place,” said Arran, “When I brought my family here in 2011, my wife and I realised this is where we want to settle and have our boys grow up. It is wonderful to be back”. Colonel Hassell is also the Senior ADF Officer for the area and in that role he is deeply committed to continued strong relationships between the Defence Force and the
community, especially the town of Canungra. “I’m very keen to keep my people and the community in which we work and live connected,” Colonel Hassell said. Canungra’s history with Kokoda Barracks dates back some 77 years when the base was first established as the Army’s Jungle Training Centre. Today, the base has transformed into a modern Defence Force training site with around 3000 soldiers, sailors and airmen and

women from across Australia attending a variety of promotion and professional courses each year. There are almost 300 permanent military and civilian staff at the base, most of who live locally. This is also the new Chief of Staff Land Warfare Centre, Lieutenant Colonel Patà’s third posting to Kokoda Barracks in his 35 year career. He too has a strong fondness for the Scenic Rim. “Canungra is a great community, Colonel Hassell and I want to keep Kokoda Barracks involved in the town and the region and the lead up to ANZAC Day is especially important,” Lieutenant Colonel Patà said. Colonel Hassell and his staff will be attending numerous ANZAC Day ceremonies across the Scenic Rim this year. He will be the guest speaker at the Canungra Dawn Service.
The Canungra Times - April 2019
Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Patà
“It would be great to see another big turnout in Canungra for both ANZAC Day services on 25th April. ANZAC Day is the most important day of the year for our Defence Force as we remember those who have served and paid the ultimate sacrifice whilst also remembering our mates who are currently overseas”, he said.

By Peter Rice The weather gods smiled approvingly on the 2019 Autumn Show for Orchids and Foliage Plants in Canungra over the weekend of 9th and 10th March. Officially 781 visitors attended from as far away as Redcliffe, Caloundra and Chinchilla. The Chinchilla visitors are regulars who have become members of the Beaudesert and District Orchid and Foliage Society, as have a couple from Pottsville. The percentage of repeat attendees is very high with some non-member visitors never having missed a show, Autumn or Spring, since the Show has been held in Canungra. The Champion Foliage Plant was a magnificent Haresfoot Fern, exhibited by Lyn Calligros and the winning orchid, an exquisite orchid entered by John Roberts. Once again, the popular Garden Hamper Raffle was extremely well-supported with first prize going to Jacqueline of Browns Plains, second to Rosemary of Tallai and third to Roger of Mount Tamborine. Lucky Door Prizes were won by Glenyce of Mount

Que Sera Farm is a premium equestrian agistment and training centre offering owners and riders a world-class facility. Located in the tranquil Biddaddaba Valley the property comprises 350 acres of prime farm land with a combination of creek flats, rolling slopes, plateau rich soils and pasture - perfect for horses. Owner Kay Sutherland bought the property in 2007 with little infrastructure and developed it over the past 12 years into a world class facility. Owners with horses agisted at Que Sera Farm have full use of the training facilities and several tiers of agistment are available from full livery with stable and paddock through to paddock agistment. The world class facilities include large, safe stabling with rubber floors, paddocks with shelters, undercover wash bays and saddling areas, an Olympic sized indoor arena, undercover round yard, exercise walker, a secure parking area, and their own on-site tack store, ‘Equistore’. A new outdoor jumping arena and warm up area is currently under development. Kay and her staff are well versed in all aspects of horsemanship and have a good understanding of and relationship with horses. Each horse can be rugged, fed and checked twice daily according to the horse’s and owner’s requirements. Veterinary and farrier visits can also be arranged at the owner’s request.
Equine
Excellence
Que Sera Farm has agistment available with stabling or in paddocks with large shelters.
“Our aim is to provide a boutique, five star, operation for clients at all levels from dressage or event horses, racehorse spelling or for young horses yet to be broken in,” said Kay. “Our paddocks are fenced with steel and protected by electric fencing and we currently have 10 stables plus a four stable complex with individual paddocks,” she said. The Olympic sized indoor arena is available for hire for training days and Kay regularly holds clinics at the property run by top level dressage coaches. Details of coaching
clinics are posted on the Que Sera Farm Facebook page. “Whether owners are looking for long term agistment with full training facilities or a safe environment to agist their horse while they are on holidays, we are happy to assist,” said Kay. “We look forward to welcoming new horses and their owners to the property,” said Kay. St
Luke’s
St Luke’s Anglican Church was the gathering point for the annual car boot sale on Saturday 9th March. The car boot sale is one of the Church’s main fundraising events and over $1,200 was raised on the day. Funds raised go to the continued upkeep and restoration of the Church building, which is over 80 years old.

Visitors to the car boot sale were spoilt for choice with stallholders selling everything from jams and cakes to children’s games and army surplus clothing. Di Ayscough of St Luke’s Anglican Church Guild said the Church was open on the day and it was great to see many people looking around the historical building.

St Luke’s Church was designed by Brisbane architect, R C Nowland, whose concept was to incorporate the spirit of Australia within the European gothic style of architecture, with the timbers for the church’s cedar furniture and rosegum floor sourced locally and milled at Lahey’s sawmill.
ROCK AND WATER PROGRAM
As you may have already read in this edition, last month we held our inaugural Community Pitch Night. The night was designed for local not for profit organisations to let our Directors know what is important to them and what a financial contribution to their organisation would mean. Those in attendance would all agree that it was a very successful night; we’d like to take this opportunity to thank the members of our community who put in a fantastic effort to make the night as enjoyable as it was. We’re already looking forward to the next one! Canungra State School is one of the 11 recipients to receive funding from your very own Canungra and District Community Bank®. Vicky and KJ pitched the need for funding to implement a ‘Rock and Water’ Program; a program designed to reduce bullying, increase self-control and enhance social and communication skills. Natasha Miller, Kelly-Jo Uccetta and Vicky Painter We’re more than happy to help! “Thank you so much Bendigo Bank for thinking of the children of Canungra State School. The money is going to support training programs to help our children develop into confident, resilient, empathetic members of our community,” Vicky Painter, Head of Curriculum, Canungra State School. We absolutely love that our local primary school is directly benefiting from our funding. By simply banking with us, you are helping support local not for profit organisations like Canungra State School! Canungra’s Best Kept Secrets Beechmont
Beechmont must truly be one of Canungra’s best kept secrets. Located to the South East of Canungra, via Beechmont Road, this sprawling country area is one of the most beautiful places you can find in South East Queensland. It is a little reimiscent of the Eungella area in the hinterland behind Mackay and is truly worth the winding country drive. There are spectacular views from the plateau and a number of lovely coffee shops (check out The Flying Bean at Rosin’s Lookout or the Headmaster’s Cafe) as well as bushwalks and bird watching in the heritage listed Lamington National Park. Markets are held on the third Sunday of every month at the old school near the Beechmont Road roundabout.
From Susan Cully
I have been asked by so many people new to the area: • Where can I buy local plant species for my garden? It is indeed hard to find. The answer is: contact Beechmont Landcare (me), go to Beechmont market and see the perineal stall holder Mark Henderson (one of the nicest people in Beechmont) or apply to SRRC for tree grants. • Where can I get information about walking/visiting ‘that’ World Heritage listed park? Answer: go to Binna Burra National Park Visitor centre or to Green
Massage Therapist Jane Evans with Angela Baker from The Blue House
Mountains Visitor Centre. Free maps, wonderful books on sale. Also anyone can join the Natural History Associations (LNHA and GMNHA) and learn much much more.

From My Window
with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Dealing with Development Canungra has seen a lot of changes. New developments bring an increase in population which will continue - it is estimated that the town’s population will grow to over 3000 in the next 20 years. We have all moved here for various reasons. For many people it is the country lifestyle with the convenience of being close to Brisbane and the Gold Coast that is the attraction. There is a great feel to this little village - a sense of community and a lovely aesthetic to the township nestled in the valley. A member of one of the town’s founding families once said to me that everyone who moves here loves it so much they want to shut the gate after them and not let anyone else in. In many ways he was right. People like the small town feel and worry that developments might affect the country feel of the town. But it is not development per se we need to be concerned about, it is the type of development. The population will keep growing and people need somewhere to live. What we need to ask is will new developments provide homes for older people who now have to move away from friends and family? Will it add or detract from the look and feel of the town and affect the tourism industry many businesses rely on? Canungra is growing. There is no doubt of that and no doubt that the growth will continue. And as much as we might like to, once we move here we can’t just shut that gate and not let anyone else in.
I would like to thank all our friends, neighbours and many in the business community for their support for us during Ray’s six years of illness. Canungra Valley Medical were constant in their care over this long period. Many people came to support after our final goodbye at Gold Coast Private Hospital on 17th March and at his funeral on 21st March . Seems like we are still all one at our beautiful Canungra . Thank you to Council for the large sign on Lamington National Park Road warning of wallabies on road, and having the 1300 ANIMAL number for the RSPCA displayed. I am aware however that the RSPCA line is very often, particularly in the early mornings when most macropod casualties occur, engaged for long periods of time. The number for Wildcare is 55272444 and always manned from 9pm at night to 7am. In the morning and most other times too; if not manned at any time the message you will receive gives contact phone numbers for each species where possible. In Canungra area also feel free to ring me directly on 0414 435 919 (poor reception at home so may have to return call asap) or 5543 5917; if I am around I can generally attend quickly. If you hit a wallaby or see one that is hit and obviously dead, if it is safe to do so can you please check if there are any pouch young? It is easier to be fair to raise a back leg and if testicles visible you need look no further. Time is of the essence for these little joeys so please call either RSPCA or Wildcare asap. If anyone is interested in joining Wildcare or wishes to know a little more about us and what they may be able to do to help please look at the Wildcare website www.wildcare.org.au. Your safety is paramount however so please do not stop if it is unsafe to do so; just call one of the numbers and we will attend. Bren Dalby Registered Wildlife Carer

Author Gillian Wells will be at Canungra Books and Art on Sunday 28th April for a ‘Meet the Author’ event. Gillian will be speaking about her new hot off the press book Travelling. “The book is about a girl called Sam in her mid twenties,” said Gillian. “She is horse mad but with an unhappy past. She comes to Australia to work with horses and travels emotionally and physically towards healing.” “She meets a man who is also hurting and life looks better for both of them, then Sam’s secret catches up with her and all is lost. “It shows that secrets are best told at the beginning and that judging yourself too harshly isn’t always a good thing,” explains Gillian. The Smiley Reilly Project is an Australian based not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting families who have experienced the loss of a child. Their mission is to provide fun, positive experiences to bereaved families to help them navigate their new path in life following the loss of their precious child or children. Founders of The Smiley Reilly Project, and local residents Raquel and Jonathan Hall tragically lost their beautiful six month old baby boy, Reilly, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in February 2015. The Halls founded The Smiley Reilly Project to try and give others a glimmer of hope. Today, The Smiley Reilly Project holds group events and provides ‘Smiley Reilly Experience Packs’ to other bereaved families, offering them a chance to smile a little for no reason, to do something fun, or experience something that they wouldn’t normally get to do. Live Fit Gym held an 80s Aerobics Night which raised over $350 for the Smiley Reilly Project. The 80s outfits were spectacular and aerobics instructor Kym Crook ensured everyone who attended got the workout they wanted and had fun at the same time.

Autumn might have come late this year but the inaugural Autumn Equinox Markets at The Blue House were well attended despite record temperatures on the day. There were consisent crowds taking in the various stalls throughout the afternoon, with a very relaxed vibe at the Market. People who had not previously had market stalls were specifically invited to attend and it was an emotional day for artist Wendy Nienabar who was delighted by the interest and sales of her paintings. Organiser Nicole Krause said she was delighted with the response to the Market. “It really is the perfect venue,” said Nicole, “It has such a great feel - exactly what we had hoped for.”

D J Smith Memorial Park
Work is well under way with the upgrade and beautification of our memorial park. The grounds look a little untidy at the moment but will be well and truly ready for this year’s ANZAC Day Services.
ANZAC Day 2019
Regardless of the weather, all ANZC Day Services will go ahead as follows: a. 5.30am: Dawn Service commences; and b. 9.30am: March begins from Canungra State School to D J Smith Memorial Park, with the salute taken at the Canungra Post Office. The MidMorning Service at the park will commence after the last contingent marching has entered and taken up their position in the park.
Road Closure
The main road through Canungra will be closed from 9am until 10am (approximately) with a detour via Coburg Road and Franklin Street. The detours will be easy to follow and manned by directing staff.
Natural Health Expo
Looking for a free weekend outing for the whole family? The Natural Health Expo will be held on Sunday 14th April, from 8.30am until 2pm at Mundoolun Community Centre, Scarborough Crt, Mundoolun. Come along for a fun, tasty and educational morning with free information sessions, workshops and demonstrations. Meet your local natural health experts and learn about and try yoga, massage, naturopathy, kinesiology, osteopathy, bowen and finch therapy, reflexology, meditation, organic and fermented foods, aromatherapy, natural skin care, beauty and cleaning, basket weaving, psychic reading, aura photography, Tibetan bowls, how to create an energetically healthy home and so much more. There will be fun nature play activities for the kids, market stalls to wander through, yummy healthy food, ice cream, coffee, pop up cafe and a chill out zone. This is a chance to connect with like-minded positive people in this growing community. This is the Expo’s second year. Organisers said last year was a huge success and are predicting that this year will be even better. The Natural Health Expo is a labour of love which has been created by local women who live and work in and around Jimboomba. All are passionate about health, living well and sharing what they know and love. This year they have redesigned the space for better flow and to ensure the Expo is able to handle the expected increase in numbers. For more information like the Natural Health Expo Jimboomba 2019 Facebook page.
Key Note Addresses and Catafalque Party
The guest speaker for this year’s Dawn Service is Colonel Arron Hassell, CSC. Colonel Hassell is no stranger to the area having served here as the Commanding Officer, Defence Force School of Intelligence. Colonel Hassell and his family have just recently returned from a military position in the USA. The salute for the march and guest speaker for the Mid-Morning Service will be the new Commanding Officer, Defence Force School of Intelligences (DFSI), Lieutenant Colonel Dennis Robins, CSC. DFSI members will participate in the march and provide the Catafalque Parties for the Dawn and Mid-Morning Services.
Guest Singers
Last year, we were blessed with the unbelievable tones of Rebecca Lloyd and her renditions of the Australian and New Zealand Nation Anthems. I am very pleased to announce that Rebecca will be joining us once more at both our services. We are also hoping that Chris Duncan will be available to sing ‘The Band Played Waltzing Matilda’.
Conclusion
The citizens of Canungra and visitors to the area have been huge supporters of ANZAC Day services, and from an RSL Sub-Branch point of view this is very rewarding. The Canungra RSL Sub-Branch look forward to seeing you all on this most important day and we ask that you please arrive early. I would like to whole-heartedly congratulate all the businesses of Canungra for their co-operation and the way they work around ANZAC Day. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you at and after the services.

TERM TWO 23 April 2019 to 28 June 2019
Low back pain will affect most of us at sometime in the course of our lives. Sedentary lifestyles, where sitting is the default position, increased body weight; incorrect lifting techniques and poor postures are all contributing factors to LBP. Effective advice, a thorough professional assessment and a tailored exercise program show the best outcomes in the long term. In the short term your Physiotherapist will decide on a treatment plan to adjust the biomechanics of your body and thereby allow for more thorough healing to take place. There are some cases where your Physiotherapist or Doctor will suggest that you have an X-ray or MRI. However scans do not always paint an accurate picture of what is currently causing your pain so it is often sufficient for your Physiotherapist or Doctor to diagnose what is going on by what can be felt and how movements are altered. Your back consists of a complex combination of muscles, tendons and ligaments supporting the many small and some larger joints, which support your body weight. Pain can be caused by any number of alterations to these structures. Your feet, legs and pelvis all play a role in the biomechanical functioning of your spine as does your breathing and head posture. Keeping active and flexible; adopting a good strong posture; using your core muscles effectively; (especially when lifting) and breathing well will all help to prevent the onset of LBP. If you are suffering from LBP, it’s best to book an appointment with your Physiotherapist or Doctor for a thorough assessment, appropriate treatment and sound evidence-based management advice.

MOTORING - Isuzu
D-Max LS-T Review
Review by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au
The addition of the LS-T dual-cab as a permanent member of the D-Max range, rather than a special edition, has given Isuzu a little more power in a market dominated by the big players. The 2019 range still has the 3.0-litre turbodiesel with an output of 130kW at 3600rpm and 430Nm of torque at 2000rpm. It is less than its rivals but drives in the same fashion it always has, relaxed and never feeling like it is stressed. The LS-T is at the top of the range for the D-Max and has been given some nice comforts. The 8.0-inch touchscreen has satellite navigation and reversing camera, a proximity key fob, leather seats, 18-inch wheels and a full-size alloy spare wheel. There is also LED running lights and tail lights, front fog lights, chrome radiator grille, hill descent control, climate control, leather steering wheel and carpet flooring. Isuzu has reworked the rear suspension to suit Aussie conditions which makes it more accommodating at the rear when the tub is empty. Even though Isuzu changed the rear spring set-up, they have lost nothing with the towing ability (braked capacity 3500kg).
The LS-T has increased the GVM and lengthened the time between services. Now you can do 12 months or 15,000km between services which is a much better option. The LS-T is a part-time 4×4 and comes standard with an Aisin six-speed automatic gearbox that still works great. While interior hasn’t changed much, it is good to see that it has not been left out with some tweaks. There is better glossy and
The Canungra Times - April 2019
chrome plastics and soft-touch surfaces that give a much nicer feeling. Something that was always a bit of a miss has been corrected is the addition of three USB points – one in the rear and two up the front. Even though the tech people got their hands on the USB points and the nice screen, they were not allowed to add Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto. This is a little disappointing. The D-Max is solid and would be an enjoyable drive for many years.

ANZAC Day
By Joyce Libke The first full Anzac Day celebration in Canungra was held on Friday 27th April 1934, according to a Beaudesert Times report on Friday 27th April of that year. There were commemorative events held prior to 1934, as can be seen from the photograph of the 1933 Anzac Day procession. In 1934, the bandmaster of the Canungra Brass Band, Tom Parnell, at daybreak during the dawn service. A lunch was held for the returning servicemen and their wives in the Canungra School of Arts Hall, catered by the Wonglepong Branch of the QCWA. Approximately 80 people participated, and the event was presided over by Shire Chairman, Ewin Franklin. According to the Beaudesert Times report, ‘The stage was brilliantly decorated with scarlet cannas. Dahlias, roses and zinnias, an appropriate note being struck with the utilisation of several shells as vases. On the left-hand side of the stage was placed the Honour Board with the names of Canungra’s fallen and the inscription below “They shall not grow old - we shall remember them”.’ One of the features of the luncheon was the first Canungra Anzac Cake prepared by Mrs J R Forest Franklin, a member of the Wonglepong Branch of the CWA. The white iced cake was three tiers high and surmounted by two Union Jack flags. Mrs Franklin had prepared an inscription for hte cake, ‘This cake was made and

Five generations of my family have lived for many years in this district; namely Hugh Mahony (grandfather), Ellen Forest, J R Forest Franklin, and Annie Taylor. I was brought to Canungra 69 years ago. I am now 71 years and 6 months. I knitted the first pair of socks for our boys in August 1914 and am proud to think I have made this, the first Anzac Cake and I sincerely hope things are going to be much brighter for you all in the near future. I will not be at your gathering, but will be thinking of you all.’ . Speeches and moving addresses were delivered by Padre Greenwood (Brisbane), Mr Edwin Franklin (Chairman), J M

Sharp (President of Canungra Sub-Branch, RSSILA), D M Fraser, R W Lahey, H G Wallis (Boer War Veteran) and Mrs Delpratt (President, Wonglepong Branch CWA). In the afternoon, the Canungra Brass Band led a procession of returned men, school children and civilians from Canungra Railway Station to the School of Arts Hall where a crowd of 200 people had gathered. Rev Greenwood and Rev Johnston of Beaudesert addressed the crowd, after which wreaths were laid and hymns sung. An evening event was held with hymns, speeches, resolution of loyalty and of sacrifice, piano and vocal solos performances; ending with the National Anthem played by the Band and sung by the gathering.

CANUNGRA & DISTRICT COMMUNITY BANK
How lucky is our community that after all the hard work involved in establishing the bank in our area they are now able to “give back” to local community groups as they did at the recent Community Group Pitch Evening. What a great evening it was and 10 groups were gifted a total of $12,000 towards their respective projects. The wonderful staff at the bank are always happy to talk with residents and community groups about their banking future and community grants.

From time to time residents ask me how hooning behaviour can be addressed in our communities and on the roads, often in the Beechmont area. Council has no statutory powers to deal with hooning behaviour and speeding vehicles as this is a policing matter. However residents are encouraged to report such persistent behaviour on the Hoon Hotline 13HOON (134666) or online if you prefer. It is helpful if you can document vehicle type, time, place and registration number so the police can investigate further.

One of my favourite parts of Australia to visit is the state of Tasmania. Over the last few years, I have visited on several occasions to observe the wildlife. My very first trip in 2015 was to see all of the endemic bird species. Tasmania is also home some to unique mammal species. One such animal is the Tasmanian Pademelon. This is the only pademelon species in Australia that can be found in Tasmania. It is a small, stocky animal with short, thick fur. The animals that I observed were a very dark brown in colour but they can be lighter in colour. Bennett’s Wallaby in Tasmania are different from Tasmanian Pademelon as they are larger and have a white cheek stripe. Tasmanian Pademelons are very common throughout Tasmania and they are usually active at night. Their preferred habitat is that which provides dense cover adjacent to open areas. My closest views of Tasmanian Pademelon were at Cradle Mountain. The animals I observed had no fear of people so long as they were not approached closely. It was interesting that the animals were sunning themselves very close to dense cover during the day. Considering how cold it gets Tasmanian Pademelon at Cradle Mountain, who could blame them! These animals can be solitary or seen in small groups at preferred feeding areas. I observed several animals sunning together. Tasmanian Pademelons feed on a variety of plant material including forbs and grasses. Young pademelons are usually born every year and at any times when the seasons are suitable. Tasmanian Pademelons have a distribution which covers all of Tasmania. These small creatures are an absolute delight to see in the wild and I hope that for anyone travelling to Tasmania that you get to see them. As I always recommend, please observe from a safe distance and enjoy the experience of seeing an animal that can only be found in Australia.

Weeds Needing Control: The Thunbergias
By Susan Cully These vines are weeds. Definitely not native flowers in this district. They are perfectly at home in India and tropical Africa. Canungra & District These two beautiful plants really do need to be controlled in the garden and removed Community Bank® Branch if found in bushland. Each will cover and smother large areas of bushland and neither supports Australian animals, birds and insects as well as Australian native vines. The orange and the blue thunbergias were sold in Queensland as colourful garden plants. These vigorous plants soon escaped into native bushland and began causing considerable environmental damage. The plants climb and blanket native vegetation, with the weight of the vine often pulling down mature trees. The large tubers (up to 70 kg), of the blue variety, can degrade creek and river banks and make control of the plant difficult. News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough March has been a busy and exciting month for St Luke’s and this has brought a sense of satisfaction to our hard-working congregation. Our Car Boot sale provided a morning of enjoyment for all as people sought to find a bargain, sold their wares, or simply came along to taste the array of food and beverages for sale. Thank you to all who came along, bought raffle tickets, or gave donations. We really do appreciate that so many people see St Luke’s as an important part of the community. We were thrilled to be recipients of an $1,800 grant from the Canungra Branch of the Bendigo Community Bank®. What a wonderful addition to our town to have such a supportive and convenient bank right here in our midst. A huge thank you must go to our Bendigo Community Bank and the lovely people who work there. Have you noticed all the Easter eggs and Hot Cross buns in the shops? Yes, as we approach Holy Week and the special time that Easter means to our churches, I do hope you can enjoy love, peace and happiness with your family, while at the same time thinking of our friends who have suffered so much in Christchurch. Why not come along to one of the Easter services at St Luke’s? The Good Friday service, 19th April, at St Luke’s at 3.00pm will be a combined service with the Canungra Uniting Church. On Easter Sunday, 21st April, the service will be at the regular time of 7.45am.

SOME THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THE CANUNGRA TIMES
50% OFF! Any ads for Community Groups and Job Ads
We want to reward community groups that work hard to promote themselves, their events and their programs. It also applies to job ads, because we know how important jobs are in this region
Ads from just $22
We know small business is tough, and advertising can sometimes be expensive. We keep our prices affordable because we would rather see you get a return on your investment over the long term than sell you an ad one time
Local Biz Priority We do our best not to promote out of town businesses that are competing with local businesses.
We would rather advertise a local business whereever possible to ensure we deliver on our promise of helping the local economy.
We’re just like you! We are a local small business just like you.
We live here, we are raising a family and we are committed to the region. Our advertisers are our friends and neighbours and we have a vested interest in helping you succeed.
That’s how we support you. You can support us by taking an ad in our paper so we can continue to do what we have been doing - building a community-focussed paper.

FORE Your Information - Golf Club News With Kim Sami The Canungra Open is coming up on Sunday 5th May and qualifying rounds are being held on Thursday 2nd May and Saturday 4th May. The Be Healthy and Active Introduction to golf program, has been very successful. There are some amazing and enthusiastic ladies coming and giving golf a try. Thank you to Gael, Kathy and Kim for running these mornings. The Club is following the Intro to Golf up with Professional PGA Coach David Merriman conducting golf lessons from Sunday 28th April at 9am for six weeks for only $10. This is also subsidised by Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Be Healthy and Active Program and David Merriman. Book in early to secure your place by calling David on 0412 442 205 or email canungragolf@ gmail.com. The new shed is complete with the electric carts being moved in and the machinery being moved from the old shed. Thank you to Bronwyne, Kathy and Kim for stepping outside of their comfort zone to pitch the need for new pull carts and signage for the club at the inaugural Canungra and District Community Bank Pitch night. The Club will receive $1500 to go towards this project. If you want to see the Canungra Area Golf Course from the perspective of a couple of professional and passionate golfers, head to our Facebook page and follow the links to “Aussie Golf Reviewers”. Alan Staines and Steve (Richo) Richardson recently visited Canungra Area Golf Course and have done a few blogs on their you tube channel to give you a good look at what Canungra has to offer.

Scenic Rim Dogsports Event
Scenic Rim Dogsports Club are holding an event all weekend on the 6th and 7th April at Moriarty Park. It would be greatly appreciated, and indeed to ensure the safe and smooth running of this event, if all dog walking around Moriarty Park be avoided for this weekend. We cannot enforce this, although all dogs should be on a lead regardless, but we hope that everyone will understand and oblige us with their assistance in this matter. Thank you in advance.

A good turn out at trivia on 22nd March; thanks all for your support and having a good laugh too! Stu is a great host and a great night is had by all so think about coming along to next one on Friday 3rd May. Inspired by Live Fit Gym organising an event to support the Smiley Reilly project we have decided to donate our $310 made on the night to this local wonderful cause also. There may well be a bingo night coming up shortly so keep an eye out on Foodworks and Canungra Times notice boards please and come along. Tennis is our main focus at present and of course as soon as we organise a get together night ... the heavens open! None of us are complaining about the drop in temperature though! Keep an eye out also on usual sites plus our website/facebook for details re social tennis. Thinking at this stage a Wednesday night 6-8pm is a good slot but that’s all up for discussion when we get a few on board. Moriarty Park, thanks to a great pitch for us done by Steve Moriarty, were fortunate enough at the Community Pitch Night in early March to be sponsored to the generous tune of yearly affiliation fees of $1393 to Tennis Qld to operate our flash soon to be new vamped tennis courts. Thank you to the terrific Bendigo Bank, Canungra Branch. Soccer is up and running again so come along when you can to support our local players and have a box of chips to support our local club. AGM is in April - if anyone has an overwhelming desire to be involved in whatever small way they desire on our small but dedicated committee we would love to see you there. No pressure! Nominations are sought for Sportsperson of the Month and thinking as cross country events have just been held we may have some superstars who deserve this accolade. Canungra Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club held a Ladies Day Out for female pilots in recognition of International Women’s Day on Saturday 9th March. The Canungra Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club supported breakfast and free memberships for visiting pilots on the day. Canungra Hang Gliding and Paragliding Club representative Carley O’Connell said it was a record number of female pilots for the Club. “The whole club came out in support of the day and it was great to see so many women flying,” said Carley. “We had beginner pilots through to advanced pilots, including Drew’s 12 year old daughter who did a tandem flight with her father.”

“Some of the pilots did a short flight down to our landing zone where we had volunteer retrieve drivers and others flew to Rathdowney on a Cross Country flight.” Pilots came from across Northern New South Wales and South East Queensland with some pilots travelling up to four hours to take part in the day. “The sky was full of colour and the atmosphere on launch was so positive and warm,” said Carley. “Everybody reported a great fun day.”
