THE FOCUS IS ALWAYS ON THE RIDER MARCEL GEURTS | Senior Product Manager E-Bikes
MARCEL GEURTS has worked at Cannondale for three years and works in the Freiburg, Germany office of R&D. His favorite rides are the Borderline and Canadian trails in and around Freiburg, while his preferred beer garden is Greiffenegg-Schlössle. His biggest accomplishment on the bike is finishing the Trans-Alp MTB Challenge in 2008.
W
HAT DOES THE CANNONDALE BRAND MEAN TO YOU? It represents innovation. To me it’s the most forward thinking, most innovative company. So we as product managers and engineers can really think out of the box and create products that are not that mainstream but offer really special solutions. The focus is always on the rider—create the best solution, create the best ride, create the best bike. WHERE DO YOUR INFLUENCES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF CANNONDALE E-BIKES COME FROM? I get my influences from many directions. Part of being a product manager is talking with everybody— riders, dealers, engineers, designers. Each product is a mix of all these influences. The job of a product manager is to create the right balance, working together with the team.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2016 E-BIKE LINE? The lineup will be much more diversified. We have more models dedicated to specific areas and markets. We’ll introduce the latest transmission and drive technology like fully automatic shifting, which offers great comfort. It’s great to not have to shift gears anymore! WHICH BIKE IN THE 2016 LINE-UP IS YOUR FAVORITE? We are entering the small motorcycle market with the Contro E-Speed that goes 45 kph! It needs to have a number plate and all the certifications that a small motorcycle has. This is what I’m really excited about, having such a fast and fun product as the Contro E-Speed.
WHERE DO YOU SEE THE E-BIKE GOING IN THE FUTURE? Here in Europe we’ve had a strong market for e-bikes for six or seven years. Now it’s getting more and more diversified. We have e-mountain biking, trekking, recreational, sportive and urban. This is all ramping up very quickly and still the market is growing! There are a lot of exciting developments. We’re now bringing that to the U.S. with a few models. If you see American riders swing their leg over an e-bike and ride, they come back with a smile on their face.

F
reiburg is tucked in the southwest corner of Germany and is the sunniest, warmest city in the country, producing more solar electricity than all of Great Britain. It’s at the foot of the Schauinsland in the Black Forest, straddling the fast-flowing Dreisam river, with the flatlands of the Rhine Valley beckoning to the west. A better place to engineer and design bikes, both road and mountain, does not exist. Which is probably why Cannondale has built its European R&D hub there, fittingly tucked into a building on the grounds of the Ganter Brewery. Cannondale clearly knows how to keep an engineer happy. Markus Spenninger, head engineer at the Freiburg office says, “We have the Black Forest, that’s a lot of elevation to ride. The mountain bike trails are right behind the office. We have downhill trails, the new Canadian trail. It’s sunny, but when it rains it rains hard, so we can test in the mud and the dry. Freiburg has bike lanes and bike roads, so the cars have to wait for the bikes to pass. It’s just the opposite of what people are used to.” Freiburg’s eclectic riding scene is reflected in the products developed in the office. Cannondale suspension development comes out of the Freiburg office, so that buttery Lefty on your Trigger and its ability to change personalities with the flick of a switch owes much to the
Black Forest and its labyrinth of trails. Urban bikes, from new Bad Boys to Cannondale’s next generation e-bikes, are put through their paces on the streets and bike paths of this college town. The new CAAD12, with its complex alloy shapes refined by a new Tube Flow Modeling process, was also pioneered here. With Industrial Design and Engineering in house, they can develop and iterate incredibly quickly. CAD, advanced simulation tools and even CNC milling can be done under the Freiburg roof. But at the same time Cannondale is a global company and it works closely with North America and Asia, sharing CAD files and other resources between offices. The culture is very open to new ideas and inclusive of all opinions. According to Spenninger, the team will actually vote on new ideas and begin working on those that the team chooses democratically. Germany is ground zero for e-bike development and Marcel Geurts, senior e-bike product manager, gets his inspiration from being in the heart of it at the Freiburg office, seeing literally hundreds of other bike commuters each day on his ride into the office. But like the Freiburg office itself, he is not a one-dimensional bike rider. “My favorite rides are the two most famous trails that we have, the Borderline trail and the Canadian trail. The Borderline

has steep rocky sections, lots of turns and is very technical. The new Canadian trail is a little bit more flowing with great jumps, a little more U.S. or Canadian style. Both super-fun to ride.” Andreas Wildgrube, Product Manager E-Bikes, had always wanted to live in Freiburg and he got the opportunity October 2014 with a new job at Cannondale. Andreas calls Freiburg a “small big town” and on a recent ride, as he descended a 16-kilometer trail off the summit of the 1,200-meter (3,900-foot) Schauinsland, he thought to himself, “Omigod! I live here!” It’s clear that the environment in Freiburg, as much as the dynamic culture at Cannondale, is a potent recruiting tool for this R&D office.
the weather, terrain and culture to test their creations. Perhaps most importantly, it’s an amazing place to call home. Let’s not forget, Cannondale’s office is also located within the biggest brewery in town, which has its own perks. “We fix their bikes and get paid in beer. It’s good currency!” says Markus Spenninger.
Cannondale’s Freiburg R&D center is the whole package. It’s an energetic and inventive office with all the resources to make ideas reality, and its location offers

50 STATE TOUR CHRISTY AND ADAM COPPOLA | World Traveller
Five years ago, Christy and Adam Coppola devoted a year of their lives to biking 20263 kilometerss through all 50 US States self-supported with a focus on charity, adventure, and physical challenge, all visible through photography, videography, and journalistic blogging. They have trekked across the land on Cannondale Touring bicycles strapped with camping gear, photography equipment and various electronic devices to record their journey. The central truth for this stuff: less is more. The other central truth: the less weight you carry, the more fun it is to ride.
C
HRISTY AND ADAM, WHAT WERE THE THINGS YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT DURING YOUR 50 STATE TOUR? ADAM: One of the main purposes of our tour was to make it all visible through photography and videography. Therefore, my camera and lenses, though heavy, were a necessity although. The same goes for our laptops. These tools allowed us to share blog posts and articles – another very important part of our tour. CHRISTY: I can’t tell you how important our mobile phones were. From keeping us in contact with friends and family, to helping us navigate through tough areas… I honestly don’t know how people ever toured without these!
OTHER SPECIFIC THINGS THAT MADE YOUR LIVES EASIER? ADAM: Merino Wool. Our tour took us through blizzards and sweltering hot days so we had clothes to prepare for all seasons. You may not need as much as we had, but definitely plan to bring as much Merino Wool as possible! Even if it’s a summer tour. Think: Layer, Layer, Layer! CHRISTY: And don’t forget our bikes. We never took for granted how great our Cannondale Touring bikes were. They hauled a lot of weight for a really long time and held up great! READ MORE ON WWW.GIVEABIKE.COM
WHAT WAS YOUR NUMBER ONE ESSENTIAL DRINK OR FOOD? CHRISTY: Coffee. It’s one thing that makes me happy on a daily basis and I wasn’t willing to give that up during our tour. ADAM: Beef Jerky. I loved finding local jerky when we visited new towns.

LIVE A LIFE WORTH REMEMBERING RIKI BRYAN | Trainer and Bike Commuter in New York
W
HAT DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE? I wake up at 5:45, get loose and try to meditate for around 10-15 minutes, I then head to Hard Boiled to get my daily sweat and moves in and plan my day. At 7 am my first class arrives, then I have 8, 9, 10 am that follow. I then ride to Williamsburg (Brooklyn) from the Navy Yard to Fellow Barber, where I oversee product development, marketing and pr, brand image and direction and culture. WHAT’S THE BEST PART ABOUT COMMUTING BY BIKE IN NYC? You’re in control (to a certain extent) ie: not waiting, getting to see your environment during transit as opposed to being underground - freshish air.
WHY DOES IT WORK FOR YOU? For a myriad of reasons... Expense, efficiency, environment, exercise.... (see what I did with the e’s!?) More specifically, because of my typical commute. It is absolutely the most efficient way for me to get from a to b on a daily basis, plus I enjoy it and it is the most cost effective. WHAT ELSE ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? Records, Nature, Life, People, Jokes, Barbecue and Tacos... and physicality and psychology. Steely Dan. YOU OWN AND OPERATE HARD BOILED NYC, A FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT STUDIO AND MUSCLE CLUB, BASED IN BROOKLYN. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE STUDIO AND WHAT YOU OFFER YOUR CLIENTS?
» RIKI COMMUTING ON HIS BAD BOY TO NAVY YARD IN BROOKLYN.
E-SERIES / URBAN / 2016
Hard Boiled is a movement based studio that I started for people like myself that don’t feel at home in most gym’s or contemporary group fitness models. I create daily protocols that are highly varied but are centered around mobility, durability, longevity and athletic coordination. It’s unorthodox and fun. We crawl, hop, lift, press and pull, roll and jump. I like to think of it as adult recess, and I cater the classes to all skill levels. There are tons of beautiful plants, and no mirrors. We have inadvertently created an amazing community, mostly because of the vibe I create and what we do appeals to like-minded people. Primarily “creatives” and entrepreneur types. It’s rad. HOW DO YOU STAY MOTIVATED? It depends on the goal or what the motivation is related to. Simply, I’m motivated by fun, life, and the gratification of accomplishment,
regardless of how monumental or small. Anything accomplished on any day, you could have chosen not to. Every one of those accomplishments is a tiny victory. I like winning, winning feels good - keep putting points on the board. Show up. Live a life worth remembering. WHO INSPIRES YOU? I’m fortunate to be surrounded by so many inspiring people in day to day life, so it really isn’t all that challenging to source inspiration in the form of people. High thinking dreamers with emotional intelligence, that believe in things, and turn ideas into actions. Known people who have inspired me: Buckminster Fuller, Donald Judd, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Jamie Foxx, Mark Gonzalez.

BIKES ARE A SIMPLE TOOL FOR IMPROVING PEOPLE’S COMMUNITIES BURTON AVERY | Product Manager Fitness and Urban
BURTON AVERY has worked at Cannondale for more than two years, and been riding for over 40 years. He commutes by bike every day, no matter the weather, and his personal riding motto is “consistency over speed”.
W
HAT ATTRACTED YOU TO CANNONDALE? It’s the history, and Cannondale has always been forward thinking. We call it creative. We have thought about problems and solved them in different ways. That’s really the definition of being creative and it was that creative impulse in the brand that really drew me to it. WHO ARE URBAN AND FITNESS CYCLISTS? I like to say they are everybody else. They are everyday cyclists, but they don’t necessarily think of themselves as road cyclists. My passion for the brand is really about making bikes for these people and really making the best bike possible for them. That’s where my passion comes from, making bikes for everybody else. When you get right down to it, bikes are a simple tool for improving people’s communities. It’s about just getting on your bike, enjoying the day, enjoying who you are in your life, through your bike.
TELL US ABOUT THIS NEW 2016 LINE OF URBAN & FITNESS BIKES. We have really worked on getting the bikes dialed, really making sure that we are providing the best experience with our bikes. Looking at it line by line and really getting it down into the details, but then also looking at: what does the user need from our bikes? We looked at visibility and added reflectivity to the tires of our fitness bikes. We’ve done other things similarly to increase the value of our bikes. We’ve done other things similarly to increase the value of our bikes. IF YOU HAD TO PICK A FAVORITE BIKE FROM THE LINE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I am super excited about the Quick Carbon. The graphics on the bike look totally Cannondale; it’s tech, it’s fresh and it looks great. I am really excited about that and also the spec. We created a really nice value carbon bike for someone who is not a dedicated cyclist, but they are looking for the best, they are looking for everything that Cannondale can deliver.
YOU’RE AN AVID COMMUTER, HOW IMPORTANT IS THAT TO YOUR JOB? The important thing is having an active lifestyle, so it’s not that you ride epically long miles, but it’s about riding every day. That’s something I do; I ride my bike to and from work and that’s what’s important, that’s what I have to do. Either I test product or just get out and clear my mind, but it’s about riding every day to and from work and having something that grounds you.

#BIKE TO SURF
“By getting out of our cars and onto our bikes, the surfing community can lead the way to a healthier planet.”
E-SERIES / URBAN / 2016
THE ALTERNATIVE WAY TO GET TO THE BEACH. Bike to Surf began by Cameron Brown deciding that he would only go surfing by way of his bike for one year, to offset all of the emissions he spent while traveling over the previous years. About a month after he made that decision, he wanted to think of a fun way to get other surfers involved, if only for a short period of time, as a way to create awareness about the ability as individual surfers to lower our emissions. He created the first Bike to Surf week in which surfers around the world could participate. The event, that took place in September 2015, garnered international participation from individuals in seven different countries in North America, Europe, and Oceana. Bike to Surf is not only about influencing multiple generations of surfers, but all people, to change their habits, and to live more conscious, ocean minded lifestyles.
