TRAVEL GUIDE TO COPENHAGEN
WELCOME TO COPENHAGEN, DENMARK With nearly a thousand years of history, Copenhagen is one of the oldest cities in Scandinavia. The capital of Denmark is situated on the eastern coast of the island Zealand; another small portion of the city is located on Amager, and is separated from Malmö, Sweden, by the strait of Oresund. Since the turn of the 21st century, Copenhagen has seen strong urban and cultural development facilitated by investments in its architecture, institutions and infrastructure. Even though a number of modern buildings designed by some of the most famous architects in the world have been raised around the city centre, Copenhagen is still identified by mostly low buildings and a large number of iconic historic towers drawing the skyline. And many houses in the old city have a history going 300 – 400 or more years back. Substantial discoveries of flint tools in the area provide evidence of human settlements dating to the Stone Age. Copenhagen’s founding as a city has been dated to Bishop Absalon’s construction of a modern fortress on the little island of Slotsholmen in 1167 where Christiansborg Palace – housing the Danish Parliament – stands today. However, many historians believe the town dates to the late Viking Age, and was possibly founded by Sweyn Forkbeard. The Copenhagen metropolitan area has just over two million inhabitants. It is the major economic and financial centre of Denmark. The city’s economy is based largely on services and commerce. Less than 10,000 of the workers in the city work in the manufacturing industries. Copenhagen is recognised as one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the world. As a result of its commitments to high environmental standards, Copenhagen has been praised for its green economy, ranked as the top green city for years in the Global Green Economy Index. Since 2001, a large wind farm of the coast of Copenhagen has produced four percent of the city’s energy and Copenhagen aims to be carbon-neutral by 2025. By that time, 75 percent of trips should be made on foot, by bike or by using public transportation. Also the city plans that up to 30 percent of cars will run on electricity or biofuel by 2025.

It is viewed as one of the most liveable cities with its public transport, facilities for cyclists and its environmental policies. Inhabitants and tourists enjoy a safe, busy city life with an emphasis on community, culture and cuisine. For example, a number of the most famous restaurants in the world can be found in Copenhagen, with top world restaurant NOMA in the lead. VISA TO DENMARK Danish visa rules
Where to file your application
Prior to arrival in Denmark, you should inquire whether you will need a visa. If you do, make sure to lodge an application in due time.
You may apply for a visa at any visa issuing Danish mission in a country where you are staying legally on a permanent or temporary basis. Please consult the list of “where to apply” .
Visas A visa is issued for the purpose of a short stay (less than 3 months) in Denmark and other Schengen countries. Employment is not permitted during the stay covered by the visa. Foreign citizens who are exempt from basic visa requirements can stay, but not work, in the Schengen region up to 3 months. As a rule, short stay visas issued by Danish missions abroad are valid for the entire Schengen region. Most EU countries, but not all, are part of Schengen, and some countries are part of Schengen but not part of the EU. A list of countries whose citizens need a visa to enter Denmark. Who needs a visa for Denmark – and where to submit an application? Detailed information about the Danish visa rules, including which foreign nationals need visas and application forms, can be obtained from the website of the Danish Immigration Service. The forms may also be obtained from the mission where you wish to file your application. The forms are free of cost.
For certain countries Denmark has entered into an agreement with another Schengen country about the handling of visa applications on behalf of Denmark. As a rule these agreements only cover applications for short stay visas. The representing embassies are included in the list “where to apply”. If you need a letter of invitation for visa, applications can be obtained by contacting CANSO or Naviair at: events@canso.org. Visa applications processing times The overwhelming majority of visa applications are processed and decided on by Danish diplomatic missions abroad. These cases will usually be decided within a few days. Some cases, however, may take 15 days. Decisions about visa applications must normally be made within 15 days. In some cases applications will require further enquiry. Other applications will take longer time to process because they have been submitted at a third country’s diplomatic mission. In these situations, the maximum processing time is 30 days. In some cases further documentation is required. In these cases the processing time can be up to 60 days.

GETTING AROUND IN COPENHAGEN COPENHAGEN METRO The metro is in service all day and night, every day of the week. There are 2-4 minutes between each train during rush hour, and 3-6 minutes outside rush hour and during the weekends. Friday and Saturday night (after 01:00) trains arrive with a 7-15 minutes interval and a 20 minutes interval after midnight on weekdays (Sunday through Thursday). Copenhagen Airport is served by Metro-line M2.
BUS The A-buses are the primary buses in central Copenhagen. They drive every 3-7 minutes during rush hour (which is between 07:0009:00 in the morning and 15:30-17:30 in the afternoon) and usually about every 10 minutes before and after rush hour. The A-buses serve at all hours. The S-buses drive every 5-10 minutes during rush hour and every 20 minutes outside of rush hour. The S-buses are faster than the A-busses due to fewer stops. They usually serve between 06:00 in the morning and 01:00 at night. Night buses are in service between 01:00 and 05:00 in the night. You can recognise the bus stops by the grey colour of the bus stop signs. The night buses are all N buses, for an example 85N.
WALKING Copenhagen is a very walkable city because of its size, as the streets are not too wide and there are plenty of amenities and attractions in the public realm that add to the pedestrian experience. For example: benches, squares, or even trampolines imbedded in the sidewalks! A few tips before you go for a walk: Get a map from the Hotel Reception, street names tend to change midway through street without notification, always look both ways for cyclists, even on one-way streets, and do not walk in the bike lane.
CANSO GLOBAL ATM SUMMIT & 21ST AGM
S-TRAIN The S-trains run between 05:00 in the morning and 00:30 at night. Line F runs every 4-5 minutes, line A, B, C and E run every 10 minutes, and line H and Bx run every 20 minutes. On Friday and Saturday the trains run once an hour between 01:00 and 05:00. However, line F runs every half hour during these hours. The S-train station closest to Scandic Hotel is ”Vesterport”.
HARBOUR BUS The blue and yellow harbour buses are a great means of transportation and a cheap alternative to the official canal tours. For the price of a normal bus ticket, you can get from the Royal Library (Black Diamond) in one end of the harbour to The Little Mermaid in the other end, passing the idyllic district Christianshavn, Nyhavn and the Royal Opera House on its way to Nordre Toldbod.
BIKE Copenhagen is covered by 350km of cycle paths and lanes which are raised from the road and really safe to cycle on. Some city junctions even have flashing lights when cyclists approach to warn drivers before they turn. For two years running, Copenhagen has been voted the best cycle city by US sustainability experts Treehugger. Copenhagen excels because of its many, broad and widely-used cycle lanes. As well as that, it’s only a short ride north or south of the city to fantastic beaches, forests, parkland and other attractions. There are lots of possibilities to rent a bike in Copenhagen - or you can borrow one of the City Bikes.
