Pro Football Hall of Fame to receive $10 million from the State of Ohio to reconstruct Fawcett Stadium The State of Ohio has announced that its 2014 Biennial Capital Budget will include a $10 million grant to the Pro Football Hall of Fame to reconstruct Fawcett Stadium, the venue for the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony and the NFL/Hall of Fame game. The Canton Regional Chamber and the Pro Football Hall of Fame worked together over the past several months to help secure funding from the state.

This grant is in recognition of the important role the Pro Football Hall of Fame and its annual Enshrinement Festival play in generating tourism and economic development for the State.

In addition, it should help ensure that the Pro Football Hall of Fame field at Fawcett Stadium serves as the venue for the annual Enshrinement Festival as well as Ohio High School Athletic Association football championship games for many years to come. (continued on page four)

We’ve “beefed up” this year’s Taste of Canton with a new look and feel, new vendors (as well as returning favorites), and new features such as a wine and beer garden. Local foodies will enjoy two days of the best tastes of Stark County, an increased selection of craft beers, more seating, works from local artists, children’s activities and live entertainment. Best of all, it is all happening in the heart of the Downtown Canton Arts District.

Food lovers will get a true taste of Canton with more than 20 restaurants and specialty vendors participating. This year’s lineup includes (to date): Almost Heaven Ice Cream, Baja Pizzafish, Bender’s, The Canton Club, Chocolates by Erin, Danny Boy’s, George’s Lounge, Loby’s, Lucca, M.A. Cuppy Cakes, Old Carolina Barbecue, Papa Gyro’s and more. Each will showcase their delicacies in the form of small sample plates, available from $2 to $6 each. Selections will include appetizers, entrees and desserts from a variety of cuisines.

Upcoming Oil and Gas Events in 2014 Two new events in the Canton Regional Chamber’s “Utica Capital Series Presented

by Huntington Bank” are on the horizon.

We are now taking reservations at www. cantonchamber.org for “Midstream Ohio 2014,” a seminar on June 11 at Courtyard by Marriott. The midstream infrastructure build-out continues in Ohio, and midstream companies are coming to Canton to describe what they are doing and what they need to keep the work going.

NEW FORMAT: With this seminar in June, we will experiment with a new format: programs that last just past lunch. The time for Midstream Ohio 2014 will be 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. We will give our patrons a high-quality educational and networking experience but not tie up their whole day.

In fact, not all patrons can stay through an all-day seminar, as we have learned with five previous events we have produced since 2012, and a dwindling audience in the mid- to late afternoon is discouraging to speakers in the latter part of the program. So we’re going to stop all-day programming. We hope you support this new approach.

LUNCHEON THIS MONTH: The other Utica Capital Series Presented by Huntington Bank event is right around the corner. If you have made reservations to hear Paul Boulier of Team NEO speak about the plastics and chemicals industry, keep in mind that the event is only a few days away, April 7 at Glenmoor Country Club.

Paul is vice president for business development at Team NEO and a veteran of the plastics and chemicals industry, which could benefit greatly from the natural gas liquids being found in abundance in the Utica Shale. Paul will offer a Northeast Ohio view of the plastics and chemicals conversation that began here during the Utica Summit last October.

One of our best pieces of advice to companies interested in the oil and gas business in Ohio remains this: Join the Ohio Oil and Gas Association, and in particular, attend this annual event. Studying the vendors and other participants is an excellent way to learn about the diverse needs of the industry in Ohio.

ROUTE 30: As you may know, the Canton Regional Chamber has been deeply involved in persuading the state of Ohio that twolane Route 30 east of Canton has to be improved to meet the standards of Route 30 west of Canton, which is four lanes all the way to Chicago.

We believe better access to the Pittsburgh market would be good for business throughout Stark County. In particular, we believe that the oil and gas business in Columbiana and Carroll counties, among the northern counties of the Utica Shale, would be aided by highway improvements.

Once approved, this grant will put funding for the reconstruction project at close to 50% of the $24.3 million goal.

David Baker, President of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, pointed out that the Enshrinement Ceremony is the “key event” among all the events held during each year’s two-week Enshrinement Festival.

“Tens of thousands attend the Ceremony each year and millions more watch it on national television. So, it is absolutely imperative that we improve the venue for the Ceremony in order to sustain and strengthen not only that event, but the entire Enshrinement Festival. All of this is a part of the plan to increase the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s role as a major catalyst for regional tourism and economic development.”

Steve Perry, recently retired President of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and our own Denny Saunier, President & CEO of the Canton Regional Chamber, are leading the project fundraising campaign.

Hall of Fame’s growth and development. We also want to thank members of the Ohio General Assembly, particularly Senator Scott Oelslager and Representative Kirk Schuring for their years of diligent effort to secure this historic level of support from the State of Ohio.

This grant is a huge step toward the successful completion this project, however, there is much more work to be done and we are working with community leaders to secure additional financial support.”

Saunier added, “We also want to thank the other members of Stark County’s delegation to the Ohio Legislature and other leaders for their ongoing collaboration to make this project a reality. This project was strongly endorsed as the top priority for this region by all of the area’s Chambers of Commerce and the Stark Development Board (SDB) on behalf of the businesses and community interests they represent. When the Canton Regional Chamber was asked

by Governor Kasich to lead this process, we invited the other Chambers and the SDB to participate in the process. We want to thank the executives at these organizations for joining us in making this recommendation to the Governor and the Legislature. This project was also strongly endorsed by the Superintendent of the

Canton City School District, for which we are grateful.”

In the coming months, Perry and Saunier will work with government officials including the Mayor’s Office, Canton City Council, and County Commissioners, as well as area foundations and business and community leaders to secure additional financial support.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Project to Reconstruct Fawcett Stadium will preserve the iconic and historic elements of the 1938 structure. It will include new infrastructure and new seating in the North and South Stands, new technology systems for sound and video screens, improved parking, improved stadium access, new concession areas and restrooms and a new plaza adjoining the stadium and the Hall of Fame. The Project will be accomplished in two phases, starting in 2014 and completed in 2016.

Perry stated that, “During the past 50 years, the Pro Football Hall of Fame has become America’s premier sports Hall of Fame and the annual Enshrinement Festival has become a major tourist destination in Ohio. We certainly want to thank Governor John Kasich for his leadership and support of sustain the

UPCOMING EVENTS Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce announces 2014 Business Excellence Award winners The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has announced the 2014 winners of the Business Excellence Awards of Stark County.

This year’s Business Excellence Award winners include 91 Restaurant Group, Ameridial, HRM Enterprises, Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty, The Schauer Group and Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway.

And the second annual Emerge Award for Entrepreneurs will be awarded to Todd Hawkins, president of Tesla NanoCoatings, Inc. This award honors outstanding entrepreneurs who have been in business for five years or less.

The third annual Business Excellence Scholarship Award, presented by Day Ketterer and the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, will also be presented the evening of the Business Excellence Awards event. The scholarship will be awarded to the local student who writes the winning essay entitled: “The Impact of Business and Free Enterprise on the Development and the Continuing Success of the United States as a Global Leader.” The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, April 11, and details regarding the application for the scholarship can be found at www.dayketterer.com.

The Business Excellence Awards committee, chaired by Louanne Kiko, independent accounting consultant, selected this year’s winners. ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Queen Committee Chair Named: Pageant Tickets Available Crystal McLendon has been named chair of the 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen Committee.

This is her second and final year in that capacity and assisting her with leadership responsibilities will be Brenda Stevens, committee vice-chair. A Canton native, McLendon is a graduate of Sandy Valley High School and Walsh University. She is employed by Nationwide Insurance as commercial processing supervisor and in addition to her years of service on the Queen Committee, she has previous Enshrinement Festival experience as a hostess for Hall of Famers during the Enshrinement ceremony. She and husband John are the proud parents of three children.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Names 2014 Key Committee Chairs Balloon Classic/Jackson-Belden Food Fest & Fireworks | Ribs Burnoff The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has named the following key committee chairs: Randy Reed, Balloon Classic; Todd Hawke, Jackson-Belden Food Fest & Fireworks; and Brian Harbert, Ribs Burnoff.

Reed is an escrow officer at Title One Agency and is a long-time Enshrinement Festival volunteer, previously serving on the Ribs Burnoff committee for 21 years, including two as chairman. A graduate of East Canton High School and the former Stark Technical College, he is married to Jay. He is a past president and chairman of the board of Canton Jaycees, JCI Senatorship, and WCR Affiliate of the Year. In addition to his support of the Jaycees, he has been an active member of East Canton Rotary and Stark County Association of Realtors.

Assisting Reed as vice-chairman of the event committee is Casey Weisend, as the event proudly celebrates its 28th anniversary this year. What started in 1986 with 25 balloons at Weis Park has grown to a capacity field of nearly 70 balloons on the campuses of Kent State University at Stark and Stark State College, with nearly 125,000 people enjoying the two-and-a-half day event.

The Balloon Luminary was added in 1993 and is currently known as the Night Glow, and a further milestone was marked in 1995 when the Jackson-Belden Food Fest & Fireworks came under the umbrella of the Enshrinement Festival and joined forces with the Balloon Classic, a great partnership that continues still today.

The Food Fest Committee is chaired this year by Todd Hawke, principal at GDK & Company, and also currently serving as a Jackson Township Trustee. He is a graduate of Kenton Ridge High School and Ohio Wesleyan University and has served in various capacities on the Food Fest Committee since 2002. He is actively involved in the community and serves on the boards of the JacksonBelden Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement of East Central Ohio, and American Cancer Society of Stark County.

Todd and wife Tricia have one son and one daughter.

University. A long-time Ribs Burnoff Committee volunteer, this is his second year as chairman, and he previously chaired the Parking, Facilities, and Vendors sub-committees. He is vice president of Our Lady of Peace Men’s Club and past finance chair for the American Cancer Society Canton Relay for Life. He and wife Laurie are the proud parents of two daughters.

Another long-time Ribs Burnoff Committee volunteer, Darren Faye, is serving as vice-chairman of the committee. Together, they will oversee all aspects of the Ribs Burnoff, which will take place July 30, 31 and August 1 at Stark County Fairgrounds. Special attractions include a wide variety of rib and specialty food vendors, beverages, children’s entertainment area, fantasy football zone of interactive inflatables, enormous sand sculpture, and musical entertainment.

Hawke will be assisted in the planning and staging of the Food Fest by vice chairman Carles Moore.

It’s important to remember that the Balloon Classic and Food Fest activities will take place once again one week earlier than was tradition for many years, and will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 18, 19 and 20, so as not to be in conflict with several other major ballooning events throughout the country.

The combined Balloon Classic/Food Fest event will include a wide variety of food and beverage vendors, children’s activity area, musical entertainment, and a spectacular fireworks display.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Names 2014 Committee Chairs Special Events | Staging The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Pro Football Hall of Fame have named the following key committee chairs: Maureen Schmucker, Special Events, and Gregory Briggs, Staging.

Schmucker is a math teacher and volleyball and track coach at Oakwood Middle School in the Plain Local School system. A graduate of Canton Central Catholic High School, she obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Kent State University. A member of the Hospitality Committee since 2008, she also served as vice chairman of the Special Events Committee in 2013, and this is her first year as chairman of that committee.

She is a volunteer for the Stark County Exceptional Olympics, active with the Stark County Mathematics Vision Project,

and is a lector at St. Louis Church. She and husband Larry are the proud parents of one son and one daughter.

As Special Events chairman, one of her major tasks will be to coordinate the Hall of Fame Board of Trustees Reception, which is staged as the first official function for the Enshrinees and their presenters, returning Hall of Famers and other out of town guests. Additionally, the Special Events Committee provides services such as emergency medical and dental assistance for guests of the Hall of Fame during their stay in Canton, and the committee is always on call to assist the Enshrinees and their families as needed.

Schmucker will be assisted with these many duties by vice-chairman Sharon Griffith.

LEADERSHIP STARK COUNT Y Signature Program Leader Profile: Judge Curt Werren This month we interview Signature Program 13th Class graduate Curt Werren, currently a judge in the Stark County Court of Common Pleas, General Division. Curt has also been a partner at the law firm Day Ketterer, Ltd. and was Executive Director at the American Red Cross, Stark County Chapter. He is married to Leadership’s assistant director Stephanie Snow Werren, also a Signature Program graduate (19th Class). As the dad of 15½ year-old triplets Jack, Hannah, and Grace, Judge Werren recently gave this warning to Stark County drivers:“Please use caution on the roads as three new temporary driving permits have been issued.” Wish him and Stephanie luck with the driving lessons!

Why did you decide participate in Leadership Stark County’s Signature Program?

I initially believed the Signature Program would serve as a gateway to community service. I found it to be much more.

Leadership introduced me to so many previously unknown aspects of our County, its activities, programs and leaders, as well as assets.

How has your experience in the program affected your service and leadership roles in the community?

In your career, how have you used what you learned during your Signature Program experience?

I find it essential to have knowledge of not only where people come from and how their particular environment shaped them, but I also depend greatly on my first hand knowledge of various programs and services, when fashioning remedies, protections, and solutions, including treatment, housing and mentorship.

Describe your leadership style: Direct Provide an example of how your Signature Program training has transferred into your workplace?

I have been able to carefully evaluate all programs and facets of the Court, and I have been open to new concepts. This has allowed me to develop my own intensive programs in taking on the most pressing issues faced - utilizing current assets and personnel. I was able to analyze, act, and bring together services that would have been otherwise unknown.

What issues do you think future leaders should focus on?

So many energetic leaders are ready to immediately take on problems they find before them. These leaders might focus on developing a broad understanding of what potential solutions are currently being offered (as can be learned during the Leadership class) and then work to be included or improve upon those solutions rather than creating a fragmentation of ideas.

I am more readily accepted and sought after for leadership as a graduate. I find I reflect on the training aspects in tackling current issues

What is your most significant memory from the Signature Program?

What nonprofit organizations have you recently served and in what capacity?

Self-generated class building at the retreat.

I’m currently treasurer of Stark County Safety Council, on the board of the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum, am immediate past president of Rotary Club of Canton, and have served on the board of the American Red Cross - Stark County Chapter, and Mental Health & Recovery Services Board.

What would you say to someone considering applying to Leadership Stark County?

You will take from the program what you put into it, however, all will learn a great deal about themselves, their community and a way to apply both to improve all of our lives and make Stark County a better place.

How have you remained involved in Leadership Stark County since your graduation?

I remain involved as an alumnus and previously served as chairman of the Asset Building program day committee.

Name: Kristin Green Age: 33 Occupation/ Title/Place of work: Traffic and Production Manager, Grabowski & Co. Why are you interested Canton’s Young Professionals initiative? I’m interested because it keeps me up to speed on new things happening in the Canton/Stark County area. Plus, I like getting to meet new people and have the chance to be involved with different events.

What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.?

I have a great impression the ystark! organization. It connects you with other young people in the area. I like that it’s on top of the upcoming restaurants and things to do in the area.

Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked?

I grew up in North Canton, attended college in Ashland and came home after graduation for a job.

Why have you chosen to live in Canton?

I live in North Canton, but go into Canton a lot for restaurants and activities. I like being near to close family and friends, plus I had a job offer here. I like that we have a small town feel but access to largecity amenities.

What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area?

I own a home. I think that the housing options are getting better. There are some decent apartment areas in Canton, but it would be great to see more downtown options.

What do you like MOST about Canton?

I like that it’s walkable and that when you are downtown for an event, you can park in one spot and then walk to restaurants and galleries.

What do you like LEAST about Canton?

I don’t like that when there aren’t events like First Friday, downtown appears to not have much going on.

What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? I think there are a decent amount of opportunities for different careers. We have lots of companies based here – from big to small. There are so many community involvement opportunities in my opinion. There are non-profits that serve many different areas of our population, and there is something to fit everyone. The leadership opportunities and cultural access is growing. The arts district is bringing new galleries and programming in that the young and old can take advantage of, and that’s fantastic. The Chamber’s Leadership Stark County programs are great. I participated in the Spotlight Stark County program, and I think I’m a better leader because of that. It introduced me to different organizations in Canton that I never knew about and pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and get involved in what’s happening here in Stark County.

in the way of apartments and houses. It would be great to see the houses closer to downtown being revitalized like what is happening with the Onesto Hotel. I think attracting more people to actually live downtown would help the area. I also think it would be great to have a convenience store or bodega closer to central downtown. Fishers is close, but it would be nice to see a corner store that people who live down there could go to.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? We like to try out different restaurants and catch a movie at The Palace.

What would you change about Canton if you could? The only thing I can think of changing is the pace of the revitalization.

I wish that it was happening quicker, but know that these things take time. It’s growing at a good clip, but I’d love to see more and more new things happening downtown.

Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? Yes, I could.

What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? Since my family is here, it would take a lot for me to leave.

But, a new job opportunity for my fiancé is probably the biggest reason we would consider leaving. Other cities that appeal to us are Boston and New York City. We like city life and the amenities it offers.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? I think that we need more trendy housing downtown

Exposure to hazardous chemicals can result in serious health issues such as heart ailments and kidney and lung damage.

The improper use of chemicals can cause fires, explosions and serious accidents.

The problem is intensified if employees are not fully aware of all of the hazards associated with the chemicals they are exposed to. Exposure to hazardous chemicals is one of the most serious threats facing American workers today.

Goodwill’s Computers Again program now offers basic computer classes, free of charge, every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Classes are held at The Community Campus at Goodwill, located at 408 Ninth St. SW in Canton. The Stark County District Library’s 15th annual poetry contest, titled Kapow! Pop! Poetry!, will be held March 1 through April 30. The contest is open to kids in second grade through adults. One original poem of no more than 250 words may be submitted per person. Entry forms and rules are available beginning March 1 at www.starklibrary.org/poetrycontest and at each SCLD location. The deadline for submissions is April 30. A panel of judges will determine multiple winners in each of six age categories: grades 2-3, grades 4-5, grades 6-7, grades 8-9, grades 10-12, and adult. All eligible submitted poems will be compiled into a booklet for circulation at the SCDL and will be published on the SCDL website.

Stark Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Stephen A. Perry to its Board of Directors and Distribution Committee for a five-year term.

Perry, who recently retired after serving eight years as Executive Director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was a public appointment by the Foundation’s Trustee Banks Committee. He replaces Robert J. DeHoff who completed two five-year terms. Perry holds a bachelor degree in accounting from the University of Akron, and a master’s degree in management from Stanford University. He also attended the University of Michigan Executive Development program. He served as senior

vice-president of the Timken Company, and led the General Services Agency in the George W. Bush administration prior to his leadership role at the Hall of Fame.

Avanesyan works out of the North Canton office in the Energy Department and resides in Copley, Ohio. Plum has over 19 years of experience as a civil designer and technician. He is a graduate of Stark State College with a degree in Civil Engineering Technology. He also works out of the North Canton office in the Energy Department and resides in North Canton.

Gunnar was officially sworn in as a Stark Parks’ ranger, making him the first k-9 ranger in Stark Parks’ 47 year history. In keeping with the long-time tradition, the 10-week old male, Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd mix, was named by his handler, Ranger Jonathan Crock. The tradition is one of the many ways the two officers will form a life-time bond. The name Gunnar means fighter, soldier, and attacker, but mostly is referred to by the Viking saying which means Brave and Bold warrior. In addition to the Park District’s first k-9 ranger, two rangers, Jacob Everetts and Jeff Reilly, were also sworn in at the board meeting. “The addition of Gunnar and our newest rangers is part of our pro-active safety approach as we continue to expand our trail system,” explains park director, Bob Fonte. “The new K-9 ranger will be a great help in getting into areas that our ‘human’ officer may not have access to.”

Canton Fine Arts Associates will host its 2nd Annual Springtacular Style Show and Luncheon on Friday, April 11, 2014. Enjoy this “fashionable” event featuring the latest spring offerings from Christopher and Banks Clothing, located at Belden Village Mall, and “It’s A Dusey Boutique” from Jackson Township. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Wilkof Courtyard of the Canton Museum of Art. The show also includes live music, a door prize raffle and a 50/50 drawing. demonstrations of spring beauty trends by representatives from Estee Lauder and Scott Talbot Salon and Spa. In addition, there will be an exhibition of original artwork by members of Canton Fine Arts. The exhibit will include many styles of artwork - from paintings and ceramics to fiber art, jewelry, mixed media and more. Cost of the Style show and luncheon is $25 per person.

Congratulations to Canton resident, Saidi Eckert, nurse assistant on Mercy Medical Center’s Medical/Telemetry unit, for being named the hospital’s Star Performer of the Year for 2013. The Star Performer program is the hospital’s employee recognition and rewards program. Hospital employees, volunteers and staff are nominated each month for demonstrating outstanding performance, being a team player, going “above and beyond,” being creative and innovative and championing service excellence. Eckert was chosen as the Star Performer of the Month last February, and was recently selected from the 2013 candidates as the overall Star Performer of the Year. Eckert was nominated by patients and co-workers who appreciated her compassion and her ability to put others’ needs before her own. Eckert has been an employee at Mercy since 1968 and was presented with her award by Mercy President & CEO, Thomas E. Cecconi.

The North Canton Public Library is excited to partner with ystark!, a department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce dedicated to attracting, retaining and engaging young professionals in Stark County, and Scott Bryant of Rembryant Studios to offer the Little Art Gallery’s upcoming exhibit featuring artwork made from sustainable materials. Eco Evolution, on display in the Little Art Gallery from April 3-10, will examine the evolution of discarded materials turned beautiful artistic design. Featuring artwork created from repurposed materials including wood and metal, Scott Bryant’s collection “The Language of Branches,” is dedicated entirely to trees. Additionally, the exhibit will showcase the fashion designs of local artists who competed in the 2013 ystark! Wear & Share event.
