Chamber’s Synchronist Study indicates regional manufacturing growth Manufacturing sales are increasing, and so is market share for primary products. Business is expected to grow. So is employment. Wouldn’t you want to live in a community where manufacturing is making such steady gains? You do live there. A majority of surveyed manufacturers in the Greater Canton area are reporting growth and envisioning a promising future, according to a 16-month SYNCHRONIST study conducted by the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with The Business Resource Network (BRN). From Jan. 1, 2013 to Apr. 5, 2014, the Chamber interviewed 52 businesses — mostly manufacturers and mostly in Canton — as a key component of its economic development program as outlined in the Chamber›s Strategic Plan. The results are good news for the Canton and Greater Stark County economy. Here are highlights: (continued on page four)

BOARD OF
OIL & GAS
DIRECTORS
Oil and Gas | August Update This month, we are taking a broader look at energy, as you can see by Utica Capital Series story page two.
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Chairman of the Board - Philip D. Fracassa The Timken Company
Here are the sources for that 97.5 quadrillion BTU in 2013:
Sr. Vice Chairman - William C. Shivers Huntington Bank
36 percent came from petroleum. We have been working for three years at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce to understand what is happening in the Utica Shale and how the shale-gas business can benefit our members. Though shale energy is changing the nation’s energy portfolio, and enhancing the nation’s energy security, we cannot rely on the shale formations in the United States to fuel the U.S. economy and the U.S. lifestyle — now or in the future. Here’s a broader look at U.S. energy consumption by source in 2013, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. This country consumed 97.5 quadrillion BTU of energy in 2013. To give you an idea of what that number means, the average U.S. home uses about 90 million BTU of energy in a year. This figure has remained fairly constant over 30 years because energy efficiency has been offset by increasing size of homes, according to the U.S. EIA. English-major math tells me that this is enough energy for 1.08 billion homes, and we don’t have 1.08 billion homes, but we have millions of cars and trucks and railroad trains and ships, and factories that make everything from steel to plastic forks. Add the computers. Add the schools, other businesses, churches, government offices. 97.5 quadrillion BTU still is a hardto-imagine number, but we ask for a lot in order to maintain our economy, our lifestyle and our security.
Vice Chairman - Brian Belden The Belden Brick Company
27 percent came from natural gas.
Vice Chairman - John A. Murphy, Jr. Day Ketterer Ltd.
19 percent came from coal.
Vice Chairman - Mark Fleiner LG Fuel Cell Systems
10 percent came from renewables such as solar and wind energy and biofuels.
Treasurer - D. William Allen Pro Football Hall of Fame Immediate Past Chairman - Karen M. Brenneman Hall, Kistler & Company LLP
8 percent came from nuclear electric power.
President & CEO - Dennis P. Saunier Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce
People in the oil and gas industry will tell you we need all of the above. It would be a greener world if we could make this country strong through solar panels, windmills and biofuels, if we could stop using coal or crude oil. But the math stands in the way. We need what we need, unless we are willing to undertake a revolutionary change in our society and our way of making our livings.

SYNCHRONIST STUDIES (continued from cover ...) •
68 percent of the businesses indicate that market share for their primary product is increasing.
•
71 percent report sales are increasing.
•
81 percent have introduced new products or services over the last five years.
•
77 percent anticipate new product offerings in the next two years.
•
51 percent anticipate that their business will expand in the next three years.
•
86 percent indicate that they would consider this community for future expansion.
The information was collected in a series of confidential, one-on-one interviews with CEOs, presidents, owners or plant managers. The data represents the collective responses from these leaders. Regarding employee training, 54 percent are increasing their investment in this area. 43 percent reported maintaining current training investments, while only 2 percent reported no training. A majority were very satisfied with our area›s institutions of higher learning as well as with area utilities and communication services. “We have a dynamic manufacturing community here,” said Steve Katz, senior vice president at the Canton Regional Chamber. “Businesses surveyed were optimistic about their future.”
Most of the markets for the goods produced by these manufacturers exist outside of Stark County, which indicate these manufacturers are bringing wealth back into the Canton-Stark County community. Only 12 percent of the companies said their primary product’s market was local, with 29 percent saying it was regional, another 40 percent saying it was national and 19 percent saying it was international. Of the businesses involved in international trade, 52 percent said their international sales were increasing and another 44 percent said international sales were stable. When asked about the life cycle of the primary product at a business, two percent of all responders said it was emerging and 61 percent said it was growing and 37 percent indicated it was maturing. The companies surveyed report a high degree of leadership stability, with 96 percent reporting no ownership change in the last 18 months and 90 percent reported no management change in the same 18-month period. To delineate responses, the surveyed businesses were asked to respond to several questions on a seven-point scale, with one being the lowest response and seven the highest. On a question about the quality of area workers, the survey showed that businesses rate the quality of area workers as high. A clear majority of the businesses rated the quality of the workforce in the five-to-seven range. Similarly, most businesses rated the stability of the local workforce in the five-to-seven range. However, some
companies indicated challenges in securing a skilled workforce. Workforce development is also a key component of the Chamber›s Strategic Plan. Workforce, business climate and infrastructure/logistics were the top three factors that made these businesses believe Canton and Stark County was a good place to do business. Similarly, the surveyed businesses gave high ratings to the quality of police, fire, emergency response and health services in the community. Finally, a majority were very satisfied with services provided by the Chamber, Stark Development Board and OhioMeansJobs Stark County (formerly known as The Employment Source.) “These results show that Canton and Stark County are good places to operate and expand a business,” Katz said. “The results also are a testimonial to the quality of the workforce, community services and education here.“ The surveys were supported and conducted in cooperation with the Canton Regional Chamber’s Economic Development Committee, chaired by Mark Fleiner, CEO of LG Fuel Cell Systems, OhioMeansJobs Stark County, The Business Resource Network, and the Chamber’s Advantage Canton program. Advantage Canton consists of support from leading businesses for the purpose of pursuing economic development through Chamber activities. “Often, calls result in follow-up activity for he benefit of the business,” said Denny Saunier, president and CEO of the Canton Regional Chamber. “Retention and expansion of existing companies is a proven method of growing a local economy.”
“Yes, businesses have really appreciated that opportunity to have a point of contact in order to address challenges and opportunities and to tap into the collective resources of workforce, economic development and education partners, “ said Kelly Haer, Business Resource Network Manager.

YSTARK! Young Professional Profile: Cheli Curran Editor’s note: In keeping with ystark!’s mission – to attract and retain talented young people in Stark County – ACTION will feature a monthly profile of an individual who represents the group (ages 20-40) that ystark! is targeting. Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? Louisville, Massillon, Canton, and some of the surrounding counties as well. My heart and home are in the Downtown Arts District. Why have you chosen to live in Canton? We have long been supporters of downtown revitalization. We made the decision to move downtown and walk the talk. Our daughter also developed a passion for the arts and what better place to raise her than here in the center of the arts? It’s a decision we enjoy every day.
Name: Cheli Curran Age: 38 Occupation/Title/Place of work: Executive Director/ CEO Domestic Violence Project Inc. Why are you interested Canton’s Young Professionals initiative? Who doesn’t want to build a better future? Getting the next generation of our community connected now and involved now improves the future for everyone. For YPs, ystark! provides that network and connects it to the community, leadership, and businesses of Stark County. What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? I think ystark! does a great job of providing events to network, learn, and socialize… but I’ll tell you another thing. Over the years, through my work and executive board involvements, I’ve attended many fundraisers, festivals, community meetings and such. You know who I see volunteering for these, helping them to organize and run smoothly? That’s right, ystark! members! They get involved in their community beyond their own calendar.
16
What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area? My husband John, my 8-year-old daughter Connor and I live in a renovated downtown Canton Arts District apartment building. There are many more historic buildings downtown waiting for a little love, and a whole list of young professionals eager to move in. I’d love to see more development projects like the Onesto, 400 McKinley, and Mike King apartments. What do you like MOST about Canton? Momentum. There’s a bursting energy in my downtown neighborhood. I love being part of this community of entrepreneurs, business owners, and artists on the move. These downtown folk are constantly adding to and improving our city. What do you like LEAST about Canton? There’s a lingering negativity in some pockets of the area, but a wave of positive energy is on its way to change that out-ofdate mindset. What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? We have a close-knit community of established professionals eager to assist and guide the next generation. Initiatives
like ystark! and Leadership Stark County offer a great start for young professionals to access career opportunities and community involvement. What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? If something was missing, it’s probably already in the works. I’d like to see more of that urban residential development I mentioned earlier. What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? Park the car! Seriously, as downtowners we enjoy just strolling our neighborhood and are within walking distance of numerous great restaurants, bars, music venues… yoga, our new YMCA, Canton Palace Theatre, museums, Players Guild, Canton Ballet, civic center, and of course First Friday, Blues Fest, Taste of Canton, Vintage Canton…the list goes on and on. What would you change about Canton if you could? I’ve been reading the Downtown Development Plan from the Chamber (get yourself a copy); it’s a good list of improvements I agree with so far. Start there. Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? I love my community and my life here, and I want to stick around and watch Canton grow. What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? Loss of momentum, maybe. But I don’t see that happening right now and that continued momentum is up to us!

Denver artist, Michael Clapper, is the creator of this piece – a 25 foot steel sculpture that will be at the Frank T. Bow building, 201 Cleveland Avenue SW, Canton 44702. This site was the location of a Hupmobile showroom, owned by Ralph Hay, where he, as the owner of the Canton Bulldogs along with Jim Thorpe, George Halas and representatives of the charter teams, created the American Professional Football Organization (renamed the National Football League). The date was September 17, 1920. In addition to Clapper, the event will feature NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Pro Football Hall of Fame CEO David Baker, Ralph Hay’s grandson - Dr. James King, and Robb Hankins, president and CEO of ArtsinStark. A limit of (2) FREE tickets can be picked up at the ArtsinStark offices, 900 Cleveland Avenue NW, Canton during regular business hours. (330) 4531075. These tickets are for Standing Room Only. Also on August 1 is First Friday in downtown Canton. Fifteen chalk artists will take to the streets and to their knees to create temporary artwork, while Battle of the Chalk, hosted by the Julliard Arts Center, invites kids of all ages to compete for prizes at the Motter and Meadows lot on Market. Across the street, two free flicks will play at the Canton Palace Theatre -- “Draft Day” at 4 p.m. and “Little Giants,” – the free family flick at 7:30. Snap up the highly anticipated Vivian Maier photography show at the Saxton Gallery. Then head to Translations for “Attack of the Fiber Artists,” and Journey unlocks the Beads for Life trunk show.
