The theme for the 2014 festival is “Women in Blues,” and it’s all happening in downtown Canton on Friday, June 20, and Saturday, June 21. This year’s lineup will feature Ana Popovic on Friday at 8:30 p.m. and Shemekia Copeland on Saturday at 8:30 p.m., along with music each day from noon to 10:30 p.m.

The FREE outdoor summer festival, now in its 13th year, is presented by Canton Development Partnership, a department of the Canton Regional Chamber.

by David Kaminski, Director of Energy and Public Affairs In April, we will build on the conversation at last October’s Utica Summit. We will offer a Northeast Ohio look at chemicals and plastics and Utica energy. Our presenter will be Paul Boulier of Team NEO. The event will be a business lunch on April 7 at Glenmoor Country Club.

This event will be the second in the Canton Regional Chamber’s 2014 Utica Capital Series Presented by Huntington Bank.

Boulier is vice president for business development at Team NEO, the nonprofit business attraction and growth organization that works to market Northeast Ohio, attract new businesses and aid in growth of existing businesses. Boulier develops business for the 18-county region’s core industries, including metal fabrication and machinery; polymers, chemicals and coatings; energy, oil and gas, and packaging and transportation.

He comes to Team NEO with senior management experience at A. Schulman, Core Molding Technologies, Avery Dennison and Nova Chemicals. Boulier recently gave one of the nine 15-minute presentations at the half-day Utica 2020 program at Kent State University Tuscarawas, which was presented by the Tuscarawas Oil and Gas Alliance. He came to the Canton Regional Chamber early last year to tell us about his work and learn about ours.

Among other topics, our Utica Summit, which was produced in partnership with The Repository, created a conversation about how Utica energy could invigorate the chemicals and plastics industry in the United States. We still are hearing business people talk about two speakers in particular. They were Tom Gellrich of TopLine Analytics of Philadelphia, and Peter Molinaro of Dow Chemical’s Washington office. They talked about how the natural gas liquids being found in abundance in the Utica shale, particularly ethane, can be converted into the raw materials for chemicals and plastics manufacturing and used in a vast array of products that are now being manufactured in Asia.

Clean Fuels Ohio, a state non-profit organization that promotes use of natural gas as a transportation fuel, has completed a video recorded in December at the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority. It shows SARTA’s adoption of compressed natural gas as a fuel for its bus and car fleet.

SARTA also operates a public CNG fueling station in the community. CNG tractors from the Frito-Lay truck fleet and other adopters of CNG fuel can buy gas at SARTA just as they would buy gasoline at an auto filling station.

The video features Kirt Conrad, the SARTA executive, Frito-Lay driver James Brown, Stark County Commissioner Richard Regula, SARTA driver Kathy Hall and a number of SARTA bus passengers, who all commented on how much quieter and less odorous a gas bus is, compared with a diesel bus. The Canton Regional Chamber also participated in the video.

UPCOMING EVENTS March AultCare Fast Break Breakfast: Encouraging Governments to Collaborate Local governments operate in an environment of rising costs, loss of state government funding and taxpayer reluctance to make up the difference through tax increases.

Creative local leaders are turning to shared services to meet citizens’ needs. Governments are finding new ways to work together. The results can mean better service and cost savings.

Panelists will explain Canton Regional Chamber’s interest in encouraging shared services among local governments. The Chamber has been interested in regional shared-services efforts for the past several years. It has participated in government efficiency conferences and has helped campaign for shared services projects in Northeast Ohio regional contests.

Recently, the Chamber has formed a Shared Services Committee to encourage new activity in this area. The motivation for this work has always been: Creative, efficient government provides a good environment for business and job growth.

talk about efforts they have led personally to make government more efficient and effective for the citizens, as well as tell the AultCare Fast Break audience about endeavors that their colleagues in government have undertaken.

Kiko is a CPA with more than 10 years of experience with a regional public accounting firm, Cohen & Company, followed by 10 years of industrial experience with two different companies.

She is currently working as an independent consultant with multiple companies.

Kiko is an alumnus of Leadership Stark County and has resided in Stark County all of her life. She was raised on a family dairy farm and is currently raising five children with her husband Jim on his family farm. She has volunteered with multiple organizations, sits on the Minerva Library Board and coaches youth basketball for Minerva. In her spare time, Kiko enjoys running, cooking, and dabbles with singing and playing the piano.

Randy Smith is a senior commercial banker with Key Bank and has 30 years of commercial banking experience.

Smith serves middle market banking needs of businesses in Stark, Wayne, Holmes, Tuscarawas, Carroll, Coshocton and Harrison counties. He has distinguished himself by being a problem solver, a connector, a strategic thinker, a good communicator and by maintaining a “glass half-full” outlook. Smith serves as a member and current chairman of North Canton’s TAP committee; he serves as an elder at MissionView Church.

Smith is an alumnus of Leadership Stark County and is a past chairman of the North Canton Chamber of Commerce. He has also enjoyed serving for many years as a youth baseball and basketball coach. Smith and his wife Linda have been married for 29 years and they have four children Rebekah, Abihgail, Sally and Joe. Their family resides in North Canton.

Business Excellence Awards Scholarship

The law firm of Day Ketterer, in partnership with the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, will award their third annual scholarship award at the 2014 Business Excellence Awards. The scholarship is designed to acknowledge the importance of the role of business in the community and the nation, and to encourage students to continue to expand their business and leadership skills and to contribute to their local business community upon graduation from college.

The scholarship amount of $1,500 will be awarded to an individual who is currently enrolled as a Stark County high school senior or a student at a Stark County University or College who writes the winning essay entitled: “The Impact of Business and Free Enterprise on the Continuing Success of the United States as a Global Leader”.

The scholarship will be awarded to a Stark County high school senior or Stark County resident currently enrolled in college. The one-time scholarship can be used for tuition, room, board, textbooks or other educational expenses at any college or university in the United States. The scholarship will be presented on May 6 at the Business Excellence Awards of Greater Canton.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Deadline nearing for PFHOFEF Queen Pageant Applications Don’t miss the opportunity to compete in the prestigious Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant. The completed application and a $70 fee must be received by the Enshrinement Festival department at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, March 10.

Applications and tickets are available at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Enshrinement Festival department, 222 Market Ave. N., in downtown Canton, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, applications are available on-line at www. profootballhofef.com or contact Kathy Lindenberger, event manager, at 330.458.2056 or kathyl@cantonchamber.org. Candidates cannot be younger than a high school senior and 18 years old by May 1 or more than 23 years of age before Sept. 1.

The Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant is not a beauty pageant. While overall appearance is certainly an important component, contestants are judged based on personality, poise, beauty, communication skills, academic achievement and service to community. If there is a tie at any point in the judging process, it will be broken by utilizing the scores for personality, poise, and beauty – in that order.

A Queen and seven Court members will be selected to coincide with the number in the Class of 2014 which is comprised of linebacker Derrick Brooks, punter Ray Guy, defensive end Claude Humphrey, tackle Walter Jones, wide receiver Andre Reed, defensive end Michael Strahan, and cornerback/safety Aeneas Williams.

In addition to greeting guests at many of the 24 events during the two and a half weeks of the Enshrinement Festival scheduled July 18 through Aug. 4, the Queen and Court will volunteer their time to civic organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Turnaround Community Outreach Center, MRDD and many more. Certainly one of the most memorable experiences for the Queen and Court will be their ride on a float in the Timken Grand Parade.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL FACTS: In 2014, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Enshrinement Festival will mark the 51st year of honoring the legends of professional football, which includes conducting a world-renowned festival celebrating the annual enshrinement of football players, coaches and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The collaborative efforts of this leadership team, combined with the professional staffs at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the dedicated team of more than 4,200 volunteers, will ensure the success of 24 diverse events from July 18 through Aug. 4, 2014.

The Enshrinement Festival activities, attended by nearly 700,000 people, are expected to produce an economic impact of over $32 million for the Canton/Stark County area and $56 million for the State of Ohio. In addition, millions will experience aspects of the Enshrinement Festival as events are televised and covered by other media.

The central focus and highlight of this year’s Enshrinement Festival will be the Aug. 2 Enshrinement Ceremony for the Class of 2014 Enshrinees.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Names 2014 Key Committee Chairs Steering | General Chairman Alumni | Safety Management The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has named chairmen of three key committees: Joe Halter, Steering Committee; Barbara Hammontree Bennett, General Chairman Alumni Association; and Ron Dougherty, Safety Management Committee.

Halter, founding partner, chairman and CEO of Cantonbased Solmet Technologies, Inc., most recently served as the 2013 general chairman of the Chamber’s Enshrinement Festival committees. The function of the Steering Committee is to assist and facilitate as needed to successfully accomplish the Enshrinement Festival mission statement and goals. This committee’s approval is required for crucial Enshrinement Festival issues, such as annual budget, ticket pricing changes and policy issues.

past general chairmen, many of whom will offer assistance to the Enshrinement Festival in the areas of sponsor recognition, promoting community awareness and support in planning and producing Enshrinement Festival events.

He brings first-hand experience to the position as a result of his years of service on the Board of Directors of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, serving as chairman in 2006. His passion for the Enshrinement Festival runs deep, and his current service as a member of the board of directors of the Pro Football Hall of Fame allows him to bring a unique and energizing perspective to the joint planning efforts between the Chamber and the Hall. He has a strong dedication to the arts, service organizations and business community, and is currently active in Rotary Club of Canton, Stark Development Board, and Aultman Health Foundation board of directors. He and his wife Nancy reside in Canton and have two grown children.

Partner and secretary/treasurer of Hammontree & Associates, Limited, she is a native of Stark County and a graduate of Canton Central Catholic High and the University of Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Just a few short years after college, she returned to her roots in Canton where she joined the family civil engineering and surveying business of Hammontree & Associates, Limited. She is a registered engineer in Ohio and five other states, and is a registered surveyor in the State of Ohio, is a member of the Canton Regional, Ohio and National Societies of Professional Engineers, as well as the American Society of Civil Engineers. Named Associate of the Year by the Stark County Building Industrial Association in 1997 and 2003, she has also chaired several of the association’s committees. A 1990 graduate of Leadership Stark County, she served as 2004 chairman of the board of trustees of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, and currently serves on the Walsh University board of advisors, Aultman Health Foundation board and executive committee and developer’s council chair of the Ohio Homebuilder’s Association. In addition, she serves as an appointee of the Governor on the Ohio Rail Development Commission. Bennett resides in North Canton with her two children and husband Keith.

Bennett was the 2009 general chairman of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival. This is her first year as chairman of the Alumni Association, a committee comprised of

Dougherty, of Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty law firm, is serving his 19th term as chairman of the Safety Management committee. He also serves as chairman of the Joint Coordinating

Committee that serves as liaison between the Enshrinement Festival department of the Chamber and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

A Canton native, Dougherty graduated from Canton Lincoln High and was honored in 2000 as a Distinguished Alumnus. He graduated from Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia Law School, and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1957 as a lieutenant and captain. He served as chairman of the Stark County Public Defender Commission for 26 years and as Canton Assistant City Solicitor. He is the only Stark County lawyer to hold the office of president of the Ohio State Bar Foundation, and the only Stark County lawyer or judge to ever receive the Foundation’s Ritter Award in 2012, its highest award given to one lawyer or judge each year. Active in and chairman of various Enshrinement Festival activities since its beginning in 1963, Dougherty was the founder of the Enshrinement Festival General Chairman Alumni Association as well as its Individual Award of Merit recipient in 2009, and was the 2002 Award of Merit recipient from Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, he was The Wilderness Center 2004 honoree and is a member of the board and executive committee of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, where he also served as Interim Executive Director and Chairman of the Board. He has one daughter, one son, and three grandsons.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Names Auxiliary Committee Chairs Communications | Special Services | Security & Logistics The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has named the following auxiliary committee chairs: Sally Hoce, Communications; Diane Novak, Special Services; and Michele Shaffer, Security & Logistics.

Hoce, a retired Perry Local Schools teacher, has been a member of the Communications Committee since 2007, served as vice chairman in 2011 and 2012, and chairman in 2013. A graduate of the former Glenwood High School, she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Kent State University and a Masters in Gifted Education from Ashland University. A member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Women Educators, she is active with Mercy Service League and as a member of the women’s board of Springhill Historic Home. She has one son and he preceded her as chairman of the Communications Committee.

Hoce will be assisted by committee vice chairman Gary Bradway.

The Communications committee assumes responsibility for communications equipment utilized at all Enshrinement Festival events.

Members are responsible for distributing equipment, charging radios and telephones, monitoring EMS activities and serving as a clearinghouse for inquiries from guests, patrons and media.

Novak graduated from Hoover High School and University of Akron and is currently owner/president of Novak Accounting. She previously served on the Appreciation Party Committee for 10 years and has been on the Special Services Committee for six years, with

this her first as chairman.

She is extensively involved in community activities, serving on committees for a wide array of entities including, Aultman Hospital Women’s Board and Angel Auction, Wilderness Center, Taste of the NFL, Central Catholic High School, and St. Michael Church. She and husband Joe are the proud parents of a daughter and son.

Assisting Novak with committee duties is vice chairman Jerry Gilin.

The Special Services Committee assists many of the event committees with varied duties, including media and sponsor hospitality, registration at the Balloon Classic media flight, transportation for Drum Corps Competition, and hosting the Grand Parade float judges.

Eastern Stark Legacy Chapter #596, and Delta Kappa Gamma, Delta Upsilon. She serves as vice president of the Board of the Louisville YMCA. Serving as vice chairman of the Security & Logistics committee is Doug Froelich.

The Security & Logistics committee issues security passes for all personnel servicing the events, oversees the delivery, distribution and security of food, beverage, flowers, favors, programs and other items necessary to the success of the three indoor events, and monitors movement of people from the perimeter rooms into the main auditorium for the program portion of each of the three events. The committee also provides security support for the Queen Pageant, Drum Corps Competition, Community Parade, Ribs Burnoff, Concert & Fireworks, Race, and Timken Grand Parade committees.

Shaffer is a principal within the Louisville City Schools. She graduated from Canton South High School, received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Akron, and Master’s Degree from Ashland University where she continues to pursue postMaster’s work. She has been honored as a Stark County Person of Character, recognized by the Louisville Chamber of Commerce as a School Employee of the Year, and is proud that her school has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School. She is a member of the Ohio Association of Elementary Principals Association, Louisville Kiwanis, Diversity Team for Louisville Schools,

LEADERSHIP STARK COUNT Y Leadership Stark County Leader Profile: Matt Sutter This month’s featured alumnus is 22nd class Signature Program graduate Matt Sutter, CEO of Sol Harris/Day Architecture. Something you may not know; he is an avid hockey fan and player.

Matt played hockey in college at Virginia Tech and still plays in a league at Center Ice. Each winter he builds a backyard ice rink for his four boys where lively neighborhood games are played.

Describe your leadership style: I believe in being a mentor and a teacher to those in my firm.

If I can put people in situations where they are passionate about what they are doing then with the proper support and teaching, there will be success. I am always looking to train my replacement. So leadership for me is about supporting and developing the next group of leaders.

Why did you decide participate in Leadership Stark County?

I am originally from the Washington, D.C., area and was excited to understand the different dynamics of this area. It is very different from D.C., there is a greater sense of community in Stark County and a wonderful responsibility for giving back. It is a fantastic trait of this area that I wanted to be a part of.

How has your Signature Program experience affected your service and leadership roles in the community?

The experiences have given me a great overview of the different economic and volunteer organizations that make this a great place to raise a family. I have been able to connect with a few nonprofits and partner with them or volunteer.

What nonprofit organizations do you serve and in what capacity?

I’m currently working with: • Community Soccer Club - board member / treasurer • Leadership Stark County - board member, Economics Day Committee member, & Alumni Committee chair • TomTod Ideas, Inc. - bookkeeping partner • Wishes Can Happen - float builder for the Hall of Fame Community Parade In your career, how have you used what you learned during the program?

Realizing that people come from different backgrounds and that they all see the world differently has allowed me to understand the different personalities in our office. This realization leads to much better communication and a better, more productive working environment.

The relationships that were developed through the Signature Program have continued and I do business with several of the individuals that went through the program with me.

What is your most significant memory from the program?

The different perspectives of the people that are involved in non-profits. Visiting a downtown soup kitchen was very touching.

Sitting and eating with some of the people that were being served while hearing their stories was impactful. This was one of the experiences that led my wife and I to adopt a boy from the area.

What would you say to someone considering applying to the program?

Apply, get involved. Get out of your comfort zone and come away with an appreciation for what a great community we have in Stark County. Being with other motivated, passionate people brings everyone up to a new level to have a greater effect in this area. You have a chance to impact this great community!

YSTARK! ystark! 2014 Fund Drive kicks off this month ystark! has launched its 2014 Fund Drive, and will be calling for support from members and the local community through Apr. 22. This year’s Fund Drive theme is “#iamystark!” and the organization is seeking pledges of $25 or more.

Pledges received through the Fund Drive bolster the various young professional events, activities, and initiatives that ystark! will work to achieve in 2014, including service projects, professional development opportunities, business and educational outreach, and the annual Twenty under 40! event, among others.

This year, every $50 pledged gets you a raffle ticket for prizes donated by the Canton Charge, Canton Symphony Orchestra, Canton Ballet, and the GRAND PRIZE of the private archives tour of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. ystark! depends upon its members, sponsors and the community at large to fulfill its mission of attracting, retaining and engaging young professionals in order to stem the “brain drain” phenomena in the region.

Over the past six years, ystark! has engaged 1,600 members, as well as local businesses and more seasoned community leaders, in an effort to cultivate a talented young workforce and to enhance Canton/Stark County’s image.

Wear & Share 2014: It’s wearing ... it’s sharing ... it’s a fashion show and then some!

Wear & Share is an original ystark! event that focuses on reusability. The idea was born out of the ystark! Reads Book Club. A few ystark! members read and discussed Annie Leonard’s The Story of Stuff which talks about the movement of reusing instead of buying new stuff. We loved this idea and decided to start it here in Stark County. And with that, Wear & Share was born.

On April 22, we recycle Wear & Share for an amazing year two. The evening includes shopping, a fashion show, competition, silent auction items, desserts, refreshments and charitable fun!

As Canton’s upcoming business leaders, if we are able to unite and bond, as we grow in our careers we will have the ability to grow a more united city.

What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.?

The events are fantastic. It is an excellent way to network and trade ideas with likeminded individuals!

Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked?

I grew up in Uniontown – Go Blue Streaks.

I have lived in Naples, Florida, for two years and also spent six months in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Why have you chosen to live in Canton?

There is no place like home! We have a major revival right in front of us. The chance to be part of this keeps me right here. Plus the amount of fantastic golf is an added perk!

What type of dwelling do you live in?

What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area?

I live in a house right by Malone University.

The housing market in this area allowed for a great starter house with a promise of a great return in the future. It’s safe and the city does an awesome job keeping the area clean.

What do you like MOST about Canton?

My family and friends are close, and the golf is amazing! Lots of clean places to take our little girl!

What do you like LEAST about Canton?

The snow interrupts golf season!

What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities?

Canton is a very diverse area. There are several opportunities to increase education.

The job market is good with tons of major companies located right in the city. I have never had a hard time finding a group of people who share similar interests.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? I am not a big fan of the bar scene but a revitalized nightlife would greatly benefit Canton.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton?

First Friday is an awesome event! Evenings are mainly spent with the dogs at the park or out on the trails.

What would you change about Canton if you could?

I would have to reinvent the night/bar district. There is just not a common place for new professionals or the tons of college students to go to downtown. There is a lack of a draw to come to the current establishments.

Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton?

My family just added a beautiful little girl.

I could not dream of a better place to raise her. We have an awesome education system, and a ton of opportunity; I will always stay here! , What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? If I had to leave, it would take some coaxing.

Although, if I had to leave or had an opportunity in Charlotte or Phoenix, I would probably consider a transition. Both places are growing cities with a lot of opportunity!

SAFET Y COUNCIL 2014 SCSC Awards Banquet | SAVE THE DATE! On Wednesday, April 16, the Stark County Safety Council and the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation will honor area companies who are committed to maintaining a safe workplace during the 2014 Safety Awards Banquet at Skyland Pines Event Center.

This year’s keynote speaker is David Baker, the new president and executive director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

During the evening, awards from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Division of Safety and Hygiene will be presented in the following categories: Group Award (for the lowest incident in each group), 100 Percent Award (for each company that worked the entire year without a losttime injury), Achievement Award (for each company that decreased its incident rate by at least 25 percent from the previous year), and the Special Award (for each company that has accumulated at least 500,000 hours and operated at least six months without lost-time injury within a year).

BIZ BITZ The Employment Source in Stark and Tuscarawas counties is now OhioMeansJobs Stark and OhioMeansJobs Tuscarawas, respectively. “It is an effort by state lawmakers to re-brand Ohio’s workforce system and make it easier for individuals and businesses to find employment services,” explained Jennifer Meek Eells, executive director for the former The Employment Source one-stop centers. One-stop locations in Canton at 822-30th Street NW and in New Philadelphia at 1260 Monroe Street in the Monroe Center will remain the same. Both resource centers will continue to operate Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Job seekers can access a wide array of resources to assist with their job search, attend job search workshops and locate information on training.

As part of its LINC luncheon series, The University of Mount Union is hosting a talk on Tuesday, March 25, by Dr. Sarah TorokGerard, associate professor and department chair of psychology entitled, “Tales from the Trails: Linking Classroom Learning to Ultra Marathon Training.” LINC (lunch, information, networking and conversation) luncheons are held at the Hoover-Price Campus Center at Mount Union. Making tax time less taxing, Stark State College’s Enactus and Institute of Management Accountants clubs will again sponsor free tax preparation clinics for those who qualify. The clinics will be held on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., on March 22 and April 12 in rooms M104 and M105 in the Business and Entrepreneurial Studies Building on the campus at 6200 Frank Ave. NW in Jackson Township. The filing assistance is part of the Internal Revenue Service’s VITA program, which offers free help to people who make $52,000 or less.

Aultman College now offers its first bachelor’s degree program, an RN to BSN completion program. The 15-course degree program is comprised of face-to-face evening and weekend courses with low student-teacher ratios. Named 2014 Design Star, Cyrus Custom Framing & Art’s Christian Harwell took home the grand prize at Larson-Juhl’s second annual Design Star: Framing Edition Competition.
