BOARD OF

OIL & GAS

DIRECTORS

November Oil and Gas News We open with a thank-you to county government and economic development officials from Crawford and Beaver counties in Pennsylvania. They invited the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce to participate in an oil and gas economic development meeting early last month in Monaca, Pa. If you are familiar with developments in the Utica and Marcellus shale regions of Ohio and Pennsylvania, you may recognize Monaca and Beaver County for the important place it could become. An industrial site there, along the Ohio River, is the potential location of an ethane cracker. That is, if the worldwide energy corporation Shell decides to build it. Many indications are that it will. Those indications include the clearing of an industrial site that once was home to the Horsehead Corp.’s zinc production facility on about 300 acres along the Ohio River. It also includes Shell’s request for permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to build two docks to moor river barges near the site. And Shell has expressed interest in moving Route 18 in Beaver County about 950 feet from its present location to allow a widening of the road to six lanes during construction of a cracker plant. An ethane cracker would take ethane, one of the natural gas liquids found in abundance in the shale, and convert it to ethylene and polyethylene, which has many uses in the chemical and plastics industries. As ethane is being discovered, it is being shipped to ethane crackers on the Gulf Coast, largely by pipeline and rail car. An ethane cracker in the Ohio-Pennsylvania region could add growth to the plastics and chemical manufacturing industry, which already has a strong presence in the region. The purpose of the economic development meeting in Monaca, at Beaver County Community College, was to explain how Beaver County had prepared to be a candidate for Shell’s consideration. Our role was to talk to the communities in Beaver and Crawford counties about the Canton Regional Chamber’s efforts in Utica shale development.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Chairman of the Board - Philip D. Fracassa The Timken Company

Ours is a simple story, really. Through a series of business development seminars we have conducted since early 2012, we invite representatives from the oil and gas companies to explain what they are doing, how they are doing it, and what they anticipate in future work. We invite our 1,600 members and businesses from throughout the region and neighboring states to learn from these presentations, meet the speakers and other businesses in the Utica, and create business opportunities for themselves through this networking.

Speaking of ethane crackers and business development seminars, the trip to Beaver County came just a few days before Utica Summit II, which took place Oct. 14 at the University Center at Kent State Stark. On that day, experts from the chemicals and plastics field, from the area of natural gas transportation fuel, and from academic research presented talks on the future of sustainable manufacturing and transportation based on Utica energy. As with the first Utica Summit in 2013, we attracted a gathering of about 225 people. Our thanks to our partners in presenting Utica Summit II. They were The Repository and shaledirectories.com, led by Joe Barone, a partner of ours in recruiting speakers for our seminars since early 2012.

Our thanks also to our sponsors of Utica Summit II: American Energy Partners and Eclipse Resources at the gold level; AultCare-AultWorks, Beaver Excavating, Energy Nation, Furbay Electric, Huntington Bank, Kelchner Energy, and Operating Engineers Local 18 at the silver level; and Atlantic Greenfuels, CESO, Chase Bank, Equity Engineering Group and First Capital at the bronze level. Without their support, we would not be able to devote so much time to helping our businesses understand and find opportunity in the new oil and gas economy.

The Early Childhood Resource Center is receiving an Award of Appreciation for enhancing the welfare of Stark County citizens for outstanding success in service. In 2000, the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Canton established the Early Childhood Resource Center (ECRC) to provide highquality education, resources, support, and advocacy for early childhood professionals and families with young children. The ECRC offers a wide spectrum of resources that are found nowhere else in our region. By supporting both educators and families, the ECRC’s multifaceted system of support helps young children thrive, both educationally and developmentally, as they grow to become the future of our community. For families, the ECRC offers educational family programming and parenting education, both in its Cleveland Avenue facility and throughout the impoverished neighborhoods that need these resources the most. For educators, the ECRC offers a wide variety of professional development opportunities and works directly with early learning centers to help them build strong relationships with families. The ECRC works collaboratively, both locally and with state agencies and initiatives, to coordinate and develop training courses, disseminate information, and clarify requirements to ensure that educators have the tools and resources they need to work effectively with young children. In 2012, Stark Education Partnership evaluated the ECRC’s impact on Stark County and concluded that the ECRC conservatively returns nearly $1,000,000 annually in direct benefits to the Stark County early childhood community. The ECRC’s highly collaborative approach has established it as the cornerstone of the local early education and care community. It partners with a multitude of organizations and agencies that include the Canton City School District, the court system, the Department of Job and Family Services, Community Services, Help Me Grow, the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Stark County, and the Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority, among many others.

The Early Childhood Resource Center was nominated by Bradley Belden, board chair for the ECRC and director-support services at Belden Brick.

Kent State University at Stark is receiving an Award of Appreciation for enhancing the welfare of Stark County citizens through outstanding philanthropy to the community and its causes. Kent State University at Stark serves the community far beyond its education programming. From use of its campus for community events like free one-day Melanoma screenings to hosting the Balloon Classic Invitation/Jackson-Belden Food Fest to its free concert and lecture series, KSU-Stark is truly the community’s campus. Kent State University at Stark is the largest regional campus of Kent State University, serving more than 11,000 students each year, comprised of 6,600 enrolled in academic coursework and 4,500 enrolled in professional development courses, and offering bachelor’s, master’s and associate degrees, as well as the opportunity to begin coursework in the more than 250 bachelor’s degrees at Kent State University. The only public university in Stark County, Kent State Stark is nestled on a beautiful, 200-acre campus in Jackson Township. The University Center, which houses The Corporate University and the Small Business Development Center, is accredited under the stringent guidelines of the International Association of Conference Centers. Combining a top-quality major university with a community-oriented college, Kent State Stark serves our region as a key intellectual resource, providing access to academic, economic and cultural advancement through excellence in teaching and learning. Kent State University at Stark was nominated by Jim Porter, publisher of The Repository/Gatehouse Ohio Media, and Dr. John Humphrey, executive director, North Canton Medical Foundation. yuletide Fest 2014: We’re playing Santa this holiday and you can help! We’re extremely excited to repeat our holiday giving with the 4th Annual yuletide Fest, to be held on Dec. 13 at the Canton Civic Center. The goal of this special holiday event is to provide new bikes and helmets for underprivileged children in our community. We’re happy to be partnering with a wonderful agency, JRC (formerly J.R. Coleman), to provide bikes to the kids that they support every day. But shhh, it’s a secret surprise for the kids! The newly purchased bikes and helmets will be distributed at a surprise holiday breakfast where the families will gather to play games and learn about how physical activity can lead to a healthy lifestyle. To help us reach this goal, we are asking ystark! members for their support of this awesome program. The average cost of a bike is about $50. We guarantee you’ll help in putting a big smile on the faces of these kids. So, play Santa along with us and donate a little green to this good cause! Visit ystark.com to donate today, and make plans to join us for the big giveaway! It’s your idea. Let’s keep it that way. Big ideas often start small. No matter how they start, make sure they’re protected. Intellectual Property includes logos, software, inventions, patents, confidential information and more. It is essential for every business to know and protect their IP assets. That's why we have expanded our Intellectual Property practice area to include experienced attorneys who can advise our clients and implement a plan.
