OIL & GAS December Oil and Gas News

BOARD OF DIRECTORS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Kinder Moran is a new midstream oil and gas member of the Canton Regional Chamber this year, and it is making a point of getting involved in our programs. If you attended our annual Community Salute awards dinner last month, you may have noticed that Kinder Morgan was among our event sponsors. The U.S. leader in oil and gas midstream infrastructure operates in this area out of an office in Ashland. Across the nation, Kinder Morgan owns an interest in, or operates, 84,000 miles of pipelines and 165 product terminals. As a midstream company, its job is to connect the work of the exploration companies to the customers for the new energy finds. That primarily involves pipelines, and particularly in the Utica it also involves sophisticated gas processing plants. Like most midstream companies, Kinder Morgan operates as a transporter of energy, not an owner or purchaser. You can think of it as a toll road. It does not purchase the vehicles at one end of the road and then sell them at the end of their journey. It just provides the road and charges for its use.

Ontario. The 12-inch-diameter pipeline will move natural gas liquids such as ethane and ethane-propane mixes that have previously been separated at a fractionating plant in the Utica. Utopia East is one of the significant pipeline projects planned to take energy products out of the Utica. As we have mentioned in this column before, other projects are Energy Transfer’s Rover, Spectra Energy’s NEXUS and Marathon’s Cornerstone. The Canton Regional Chamber has offered testimony and letters of support for these projects. This infrastructure is necessary for the continuing development of the Utica. The energy must get to market.

This makes the midstream companies less vulnerable to the low commodity prices that have hampered oil and gas exploration companies such as our member Chesapeake Energy during this past year.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Kinder Morgan’s latest Oho project is the Utopia East pipeline, which will run about 240 miles from Harrison County in the Utica Shale play to Kinder Morgan facilities in Fulton County, where the Utica energy products then will move on to Windsor,

PUBLIC POLIC Y “No” on Issue 3, but “Yes” on more to come To our great surprise, and perhaps yours, too, Ohioans voted last month by nearly a 2-1 margin to reject Issue 3, the constitutional amendment that would have established a commercial marijuana industry in Ohio. Voters also approved Issue 2, a constitutional amendment making it difficult to establish a business monopoly within the Ohio Constitution as the proponents of Issue 3 intended to do. After careful examination, the Canton Regional Chamber supported Issue 2, opposed Issue 3, and campaigned in the community to help stop this marijuana plan. We thank the Jackson-Belden Chamber, the Perry Rotary, the Stark County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board, WHBC Radio and WNPQ Radio for their invitations to explain the Chamber’s position. We opposed Issue 3 on grounds that our members knew best: the potential effects

4

on workforce. We believed our businesses would have a more difficult time than they already have in recruiting a drug-free workforce and maintaining a drug-free and safe work environment if Issue 3 had passed. We also believed that a worker’s ability, under the amendment, to selfadminister marijuana for medical conditions would have pulled employers into new gray areas that could be resolved only through costly court cases. We are pleased to have given voice to these concerns on behalf of our members. Now it is time to take a deep breath and get ready for more. Sensing that there is considerable support in Ohio for medical marijuana, Ohio Speaker of the House Cliff Rosenberger announced right after the election that the Ohio House would take a “measured and methodical approach” to drafting medical marijuana legislation. He said he has no interest in seeing legislation on recreational marijuana. State Rep. Kirk Schuring of Jackson Township will play a key role in

this Ohio House study. He appeared with Speaker Rosenberger when the leader announced his plan to consider medical marijuana. Our concerns about marijuana and its effect on workforce issues will not go away. However, if the Ohio General Assembly passes medical marijuana legislation and Gov. John Kasich lets it become law, any flaws, oversights or unforeseen problems can be fixed relatively easily through follow-up legislation. Constitutional amendments can be fixed only with statewide voter approval of other constitutional amendments. That is an enormous advantage in the path being taken by Rosenberger and Schuring in the House. We plan to closely follow this process. Meanwhile, another group calling itself Legalize Ohio 2016 is preparing a different marijuana constitutional amendment for a possible vote in November 2016. We’ll let members know more as this issue develops.

UPCOMING EVENTS December AultCare Fast Break Breakfast: Live Website Reviews with Geoff Karcher We’ve all been there. We attend a fantastic presentation full of ideas and theories ... then promptly forget it all as soon as we get back to the office. Oftentimes, the best way to learn and have it “stick” is through real world examples. At our December AultCare Fast Break Breakfast, Geoff Karcher, president of The Karcher Group, will conduct live reviews of real websites, showing the audience in real time what’s good - and not so good - about the sites he visits. Our sponsor, AultCare, has already offered up their website for critique. Who knows, YOURS might be selected, too, if you attend! Regardless, you’re guaranteed to walk away with a deeper understanding of website dos and don’ts and how to apply those lessons to your own site.

About Our Speaker: Geoff Karcher founded The Karcher Group in 1997. Since that time, he has taken The Karcher Group from its humble beginnings in his parent’s basement to a full service firm with a staff of 35. Since the beginning, he has used innovation to help The Karcher Group stay at the forefront of the web business. In fact, he began offering search engine marketing services as early as 1998 long before web marketing became the industry standard it is today. Geoff remains very involved in all aspects of his business and oversees sales, web development, and SEO. Geoff’s favorite part of his job, though, is working with clients to make the Web impact their business. Outside of the office, you can find Geoff with his and wife Amy’s huge families, on a boat, or camping. About the Breakfast: Obtain business leads through enjoyable networking activities, hear compelling speakers, meet new business contacts and enjoy a delicious breakfast. And, if you bring a door prize valued at $15 or more, you’ll even star in your very own 30 second commercial to promote your business! BIZ BITZ New York Times bestselling author Karl Rove will be in Canton on Saturday, December 5th, as part of a national book tour promoting his latest book entitled, The Triumph of William McKinley: Why the Election of 1896 Still Matters. Rove’s book signing will be held at the William McKinley Historical Presidential Library & Museum from 2 pm-4 pm. The book is $33 the day of the signing at the museum. There is no RSVP required. An evening book debut and signing will be held at the Joseph Saxon Gallery, 5 pm-7 pm. The price will be $50 per person, which includes the book. He will also give his perspective on the 2016 Presidential Race. Appetizers and a cash bar will be available. Reservations can be made by visiting www.starkgop.org or by calling Jason Wise at 330.453.6708. Mercy Medical Center’s main hospital campus in Canton has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR® certification for the seventh time in seven years. Only three other hospitals in the United States have earned the ENERGY STAR certification for seven consecutive years. Tom Cecconi, president and CEO of Mercy Medical Center, says he is proud of Mercy’s latest ENERGY STAR achievement because it is a testament to the effectiveness of all the hospital’s green initiatives over a period of many years. “For Mercy, ‘going green’ is not just about lowering costs; it’s about doing the right thing,” says Cecconi. “As a Catholic health-care organization with a mission to provide quality, compassionate care, we embrace and strive to exemplify the teachings of Pope Francis on ecological conversion in his recent encyclical letter, Laudato Si, which says, ‘Leaving an inhabitable planet to future generations is, first and foremost, up to us. The issue is one which dramatically affects us, for it has to do with the ultimate meaning of our earthly sojourn.’”

The pups and tigers combined for a total of 605 yards during their annual shootout, while their fans combined for a total of 23,781 pounds of food during the pregame McKinley - Massillon Food Fight. McKinley fans made the day a clean sweep capturing honors in the fourth annual Food Fight in a close match bringing in 12,478 pounds of donations, however, the real winners were the hungry of Stark County. All donations in the McKinley - Massillon Food Fight went to Stark County Hunger Task Force and to be distributed through the organization’s network of more than 30 pantries throughout Stark County. Stark County District Library, The Smart Store, where everything is free®, has paired up with the Canton Charge to announce a new program to promote literacy and a life-long love of reading for kids in the Stark County area. The Library and The Charge have teamed with Consumers National Bank to introduce Pozzie’s Book Buddies, new for the 2015-16 season. Pozzie’s Book Buddies is an incentive-based club that encourages reading every day. As participants read daily, they can track their progress and goals on a special reading map of the Canton Charge basketball court. When they reach a goal, they are awarded prizes to local restaurants and attractions, plus a chance to attend a Charge game and spend time with Pozzie himself. Students and their parents may sign up for the program at any Stark County District Library location. For the full list of participating Stark County District Library branches, along with information to sign up for the program, head to www.CantonCharge.com. Canton City School District Adult Career & Technical Education (ACTE) attained full accreditation by the Commission of the Council on Occupational Education (COE). COE, based in Atlanta, offers quality assurance services to postsecondary technical education providers across the nation. The mission of COE is to assure quality and integrity in technical education. COE’s evaluation process included an extensive self-assessment by ACTE’s faculty and staff, and an on-site review by a visiting team of professional educators. Receiving accreditation denotes ACTE’s compliance with COE’s high standards and criteria for educational programs, planning, learning resources, facilities, finances, and human resources. Accreditation also offers the public

assurance that ACTE provides quality instruction that facilitates learning and ultimately job placement for its students. A passion for hard work and community commitment came shining through as Ann Reusch, a Westfield Bank business banker, received the prestigious 2015 Athena Leadership Award for Medina County at a dinner reception on October 7, 2015. The Medina County Women’s Journal hosted the event. “Receiving this award is truly an honor, but the heroes, of course, are the executive directors and employees of the non-profits who are so committed and passionate about what they do,” Reusch said. “They make this community a better place to live. We volunteers simply have the privilege of pitching in every now and then and hoping we can make a difference for the better.” After a year of dealing with immense complications from a devastating head injury Lynda Tuttle’s husband suffered in an accident, Lynda is in the process of closing Lynda Tuttle’s Art Center & Gallery. Despite closing the 6th St. NW location, she will continue to offer art classes plus community art workshops and art intervention programs. The gallery liquidation process will extend through the end of December.
