Message from the Chairman: William C. Shivers I am truly honored to have the opportunity to serve as Chairman of the Board for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2015. As we embark upon the Chamber’s 101st year of servicing our 1,600 plus members and the community, we must focus our efforts on the numerous opportunities before us: the Utica Shale play, the Hall of Fame Village initiative, the potential Route 30 project and many more exciting endeavors within our reach that will assist in enhancing our community’s economic landscape. With the launch of the new 5-year strategic plan, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce is poised to improve our community by fostering economic growth enabling us to attract new businesses to our region while retaining and supporting the prosperity of our existing businesses. I am confident our President & CEO, Dennis Saunier, his dedicated and talented team, along with my fellow CRCC Board of Directors, will effectively execute the strategies we have outlined for growth. The mission of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, as redefined during our strategic planning process, is to lead the region in business and community development through collaboration and innovation. We are now in our 101st year of Chamber leadership; it’s a not only a new century, but a new organizational approach to “the way we’ve always done it.” In 2013 and early 2014, the Chamber held a series of conversations with you - our members - as well as our Chamber board and business and community leaders to discuss how our organization could better serve you and better serve the region. This collaborative planning process resulted in a forward-looking five-year plan for the Chamber, comprised of six broad goals that would lead our Chamber toward a strong future.

Message from the CEO & President ... With those goals now serving as our guide, we have entered 2015 with a clear focus of our objectives. The strategic plan has affected our organization on every level, including a re-alignment of job responsibilities to best meet our goals. It has required stepping out of what is comfortable and predictable to look at what has been, and what can be, from a new perspective. It has required tough conversations and reflection. I compliment the staff and our board of directors on wholeheartedly embracing the change and trusting that an even stronger organization lay ahead. The strategic plan is our map for making informed decisions about the future. It is my role as president and chief executive officer to navigate the process internally, making it as seamless and smooth as possible externally. Our plan is not just a tool for the Chamber’s success; it aids in the community’s economic future. Stronger economic development, improved infrastructure, better workforce readiness, greater collaboration, a vibrant center city, a unified public policy voice – these are things that benefit the entire region. We are a regional chamber, and so are the objectives in our plan.

In 2015, we as an organization and a region have much to look forward to: big news coming out of the oil and gas industry as it relates to Utica energy, including the possibility of an ethane cracker plant in the region; exciting plans for a Hall of Fame Village, which could affect regional tourism on a major level; and a unified public policy and economic development “voice” that will advocate for Canton/Stark County on regional issues. And all of that in addition to our continued year-round networking opportunities and 70+ events. I could not be more proud of our work at the Chamber and the collaborative work happening throughout our community. Thank you for your membership and participation; I am excited about the future we are mapping together.

OIL & GAS FEBRUARY Oil and Gas News Along with speakers from leading oil and gas exploration companies, our Utica Upstream seminar on April 8 will feature Rick Simmers, chief of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management. As oil and gas chief at ODNR, Simmers directs the uniform application of permitting and inspection of oil and gas wells throughout Ohio. ODNR also enforces regulations when the violations occur. A resident of Lake Township in Stark County, Simmers is a graduate of the University of Akron with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geology. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Akron. He has spent his entire career at ODNR, beginning in 1985. Ohio enjoys the advantage of one set of regulations for oil and gas exploration that are applied everywhere across the state. Oil and gas companies know that the regulations they operate under in Carroll County are the same as the regulation as they will find in Washington County. This makes it easy for oil and gas companies to operate in the Buckeye State, even though the regulations here are stringent.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
• ODNR’s expectations for 2015 Utica exploration. • ODNR’s efforts to meet inspection and regulation demands. • Successful enforcement efforts. Other speakers at Utica Upstream will help you determine: • What effect will low energy prices have on the pace of oil and gas exploration in the Utica this year? • Will the pace of exploration affect your opportunity to serve the oil and gas industry through your business?

When Bill served as Chair from 1992-1994, he was lauded as “an ambassador for the industry through dedicated personal involvement.” When Bob served from 2002-2004, he was acknowledged for “advancing the industry with a strategic plan for unification.”
ArtsinStark’s Board of Directors unanimously agreed to award $1,242,712 in grant dollars to a total of 69 operating, special projects, SmArts, and 2020 Vision initiatives, all benefiting those who live, work, learn and play in Stark County. “Thanks to the success of the 2014 Annual Arts Campaign which made goal for the ninth year in a row,” said Max Deuble, board chairman, “this is the largest amount in grants we’ve allocated in our 44-year history.” Ninety percent of the sum, or $1.1 million, will be awarded as Operating Grants to the seven largest arts organizations in Stark County. Twenty-eight smaller arts organizations, non-profits and individual artists comprise the Special Project grant category and will be awarded $50,250. On the education front, SmArts Mini Grants went to 11 schools totaling $8,250. 20/20 Vision Grants totaling $44,212 were given to 22 other individuals and groups that are moving ArtsinStark’s 20/20 plan forward across the county.

A plan is in development for the future of Tam O’Shanter Golf Course which, if approved by the Jackson Township Zoning Commission and Trustees when presented in the spring of 2015, will ensure approximately 75 percent of the 295-acre golf course property will remain green space forever. Due to the decline in golf participation nationally and locally, Tam O’Shanter will not continue to operate 36 holes long-term, yet will remain in full 36-hole operation throughout 2015. If the Trustees approve the overall plan, it is the intention of Tam O’Shanter that the Dales Course would close at the end of 2015 while the clubhouse, practice center/driving range, and Hills Course would remain open in 2016 and for the foreseeable future. “At this point in time Tam O’Shanter has not been sold, but a decision needs to be made,” says Tam O’Shanter Company President Chuck Bennell. “The company is doing its best to keep the best interests of Jackson Township and Stark County in mind when weighing all possible outcomes for the future of our 295 acres.”

Dr. W. Richard Merriman Jr., president of Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, has been named the 12th president of the University of Mount Union, announced Randall Hunt, chair of the Mount Union Board of Trustees and Allen Green, chair of the Presidential Search Committee. The appointment, which concludes a six-month nationwide search, comes upon unanimous decision of trustees during a special meeting of the Board. Merriman, who has served in his current capacity at Southwestern College since 1998, will succeed Dr. Richard F. Giese,
who announced his intention to step down as president this past January at the conclusion of his contract in June, 2015. After a successful 10-year tenure, he and his wife, Sandra, look forward to relocating to Virginia to enjoy quality time with their son, daughter-in-law and grandsons. “I am certain Dr. Merriman is the right leader for Mount Union at this time in our history,” said Green. “He brings with him the necessary experience to build upon the incredible foundation that has been built under Dr. Giese’s direction and further guide the University into the future. He has a keen understanding of the institution’s strengths and challenges and a proven track record of innovation and success. We are pleased to welcome someone of his caliber to the Mount Union community.” Merriman will begin his official duties as president of Mount Union on July 1, 2015. Congratulations to Matt Hennis on being named one of the winners of The Independent’s 2014 Readers’ Choice Awards. He was the winner of Best Realtor. More than 20,000 votes were received in the contest, in both print and online. A series of free public presentations accompany the Canton Museum of Art’s (CMA) new exhibition, “The Legacy of Ferdinand A. Brader: 19th Century Drawings of the Ohio and Pennsylvania Landscape” (on view through March 15, 2015). Two remaining lectures will be held in the CMA Library on February 10 and March 3, 2015, illuminating Brader’s work as a folk artist, his methods of capturing life on paper in the late 1800s, and what the drawings tell us about our American family heritage. All lectures begin at 6:00 pm and are FREE to the public. Regular admission is required to the exhibition galleries. It may be wintertime, but that’s not stopping the Wilderness Center from hosting over 25 events –indoors and outdoors - in the month of February. Enjoy a variety of activities including Self Bow Making courses, Homemade Spa Products, and Wildnerness Walks.
