OIL & GAS November Oil and Gas News With Utica Summit III on Oct. 13, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and its partners completed a fourth year of oil and gas programming. We have to say we are glad it’s over for another year. At the same time, we are proud to provide a service to the business community that is not being offered by any other Chamber of Commerce we know anywhere in Ohio. Through various events, we have drawn a total audience of more than 1,200 people since our first seminar in April 2012. Our audiences hear experts on oil and gas exploration, midstream processing and transportation of energy, downstream uses of Utica energy and the long-term health of the energy sector of the U.S. economy. This year’s Utica Summit program was divided into there modules: Ethane crackers and the downstream petrochemical industry, investments in the U.S. energy sector, and new markets for the abundance of natural gas coming from shale. Speakers were: Jason Hamman, the economic development consultant for Monroe County, Ohio, which is developing industrial properties for Utica downstream companies; Tom Gellrich of TopLine Analytics of Philadelphia, who is an expert on the market for ethane, a valuable Utica gas; Frederick Shepperd of Zurich, Switzerland, an advocate of attracting European money to U.S. energy investments; Nicole Decker of UBS Wealth Management in New York, who shared her insights into the energy economy and the importance of Ohio as an energy producer; Bruce McKay of Dominion in Washington, D.C., who reviewed

Dominion’s plan to export liquified natural gas from Cove Point, Md.; and Jonathan Winslow of Advanced Power, whose company is building gas-fired power plants in Carroll and Columbiana counties. To review all of their presentations, go to our event website, www.uticasummit. com, and follow the link at each speaker’s photo. Three sponsors helped us every step of the way in our 2015 programming. They are AultCare-AultWorks, Beaver Excavating and Furbay Oil and Gas. Joining us as sponsors for Utica Summit were Mercy Medical Center, Agile Networks and Kelchner Construction.

We thank every one of these companies for their votes of confidence in our work. Thanks, finally, to The Repository, our partner in producing all three annual Utica Summits, and Joe Barone of Shaledirectories.com, who has coproduced every seminar we have offered since the very first in April 2012. It’s time to start working on business plans for 2016. We believe there are next steps we should take to enhance our service to our members involved in oil and gas while maintaining the programming that the business community has come to expect. If you would like to suggest next steps for oil and gas business development, please send me an e-mail or give me a call. David Kaminski davidk@cantonchamber.org (330) 458-2059

Awards of Appreciation The name Carol Shaheen is synonymous with the YWCA Canton. As the former director of the YWCA’s Emergency Homeless Shelter, she dedicated 29 years to working with our community’s most vulnerable population – homeless women and their children. Carol transformed the way the YWCA would work with the homeless. As the YWCA transitioned from a single female residence to a homeless shelter, Carol was the first contact for women and children who were seeking refuge and desperately needed a hand up. She advanced the understanding of how to best serve this resource-limited population and help the disenfranchised become participating and productive members of our community. She developed and initiated vital community partnerships, successfully balanced federal, state and local requirements with the needs of residents, increased accessibility and constructed navigational markers. She liaisoned with legal services, government agencies and other transitional housing programs. She created a donation room stocked with essential clothing and household items for residents. That room was recently christened “Carol’s Closet.” She also solicited donations for a food and toiletry pantry and kept it stocked with necessities.

Special Award of Appreciation Nearly 200 years ago, John Saxton, a printer from Huntington, Pennsylvania settled in a small frontier town of Canton, Ohio. At only 23 years old, Saxton was an accomplished businessman and writer, and sought to bring the very first newspaper to 300 residents of Canton. What began as four pages of local and national news, advertisements and opinion has now become Stark County’s oldest, continuously running business, providing news and information to the residents of our community in print, online and through mobile devices. In March 2015, The Repository began a year’s worth of events and editorial efforts focused on celebrating their rich past and bright future. The recognition of The Repository’s bicentennial however is not truly a celebration of the paper itself, but rather the stories, the news and the people that shaped Canton and the Stark County community over the past 200 years. It is ‘the story of your community.’ As the narrator of the community’s story, 365 days a year, The Repository enhances the welfare of Stark County citizens by connecting us to the community and each other; educating us about issues, local leadership, schools and religious happenings; sharing news that makes us proud and news that makes us shake our heads; providing a venue for discussions and debates; and an outlet for local opinions. For 200 years, The Repository has served as a catalyst for collaboration among individuals and groups working together for the betterment of Stark County. The Repository was nominated by Marty Richmond, Director of Public Relations, Innis Maggiore.
United Way of Greater Stark County was nominated by William Cook, United Way Board Vice Chairman, and Senior Vice President, Chase Bank.
