Register Now for Utica Summit III on Oct. 13 What will we discuss at Utica Summit III? One key topic will be how energy companies are using Utica gas to generate electricity. Advanced Power, for instance, is building a natural gas-fired power plant in Carroll County, Ohio. It will create 500 new construction jobs over the next two years and generate enough electricity for 750,000 homes. You can hear more about this exciting project and its effect on the local and regional economy from Jonathon Winslow, vice president of development at Advanced Power. He is just one of several speakers at our summit. This is the third year that the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, The Repository, and ShaleDirectories.com have partnered to produce this regional conference designed to give you insights on energy in the Utica shale play and beyond.

OIL & GAS October Oil and Gas News

That’s the opening statement in a Harvard Business School study of “unconventional” shale oil and gas. How about this? “Natural gas is the only fuel that can cost-effectively deliver large-scale carbon emissions reductions over the next 20 years while also providing a bridge to achieving even lower low-carbon solutions over the long term.” Again, it’s from the Harvard Business School study, titled, “America’s Unconventional Energy Opportunity: A Win-Win Plan for the Economy, the Environment and a Lower-Carbon, Cleaner-Energy Future.” The study was conducted in partnership with the Boston Consulting Group and released earlier this summer. Jackie Stewart of Energy In Depth-Ohio used the report to frame her presentation to the September meeting of the Cleveland Engineering Society. She and Mike Chadsey of the Ohio Oil and Gas Association presented the program on shale and the oil and gas economy in the Utica. The Harvard study offers 11 action steps to continue the development of shale energy for the sake of the economy and security of the nation, for the creation of important jobs that benefit a struggling middle class,

for the sake of protecting the environment in practical ways, and for the sake of moving deliberately to a greener energy future in the United States. The web pages containing this information are not easily conveyed in ink on a page. However, you can find your way to the Harvard report and Stewart’s analysis by going to energyindepth.org and entering “Harvard Business School” in the search box on the home page. Or send me an e-mail at davidk@ cantonchamber.org, and I will send you links to both that you can click in the return e-mail. You still can register for Utica Summit III, our last oil and gas conference of the year, by going to: www.uticasummit. com. And here is why you will want to. We have speakers on cracker plants that turn ethane gas into plastics for manufacturing, the plans to export our massive energy surpluses to help friendly countries overseas, the prospect for attracting European investment in U.S. energybased projects, Wall Street’s view of the nation’s energy sector and — perhaps best of all, the movement from coal to cleaner natural gas to generate electricity, happening in our very own back yard in Carroll County. We hope to see you there, Oct. 13, at Kent State University at Stark. David Kaminski Vice President for Public Policy and Energy davidk@cantonchamber.org (330) 458-2059

Chamber’s Workers’ Compensation Group Rating saves significant premium dollars–submit your AC-3 today It’s time to begin planning for your workers’ compensation future. You are likely receiving information from many companies about their group rating programs, and how much money they can save your business. While they may be able to save you money in the short term, these companies often lack the quality, comprehensive customer service and program stability that helps to ensure continued long-term group rating discounts. If your company is interested in group rating, you should be considering the program that supports your local economy. As a member of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, it’s important to note that the Chamber has a partnership with CareWorks Consultants Inc. and the Buckeye Workers’ Compensation Alliance. Our Chamber program is one of the most competitive available. In addition to offering significant premium discounts up to the BWC maximum discount, CareWorks Consultants Inc. provides comprehensive cost control services designed to help maintain your group rating status. Your Chamber membership may already qualify you for this group rating program. Long-term discounts, high savings, program stability and comprehensive quality services could save you significantly by switching your program to CareWorks Consultants. Any company interested in applying, whether a Chamber member or not, should complete the AC-3 Group Rating Application Form on the next page and return it via fax to Denise Burton, director of membership and sales, at (330) 489-6005.

BIZ BITZ The Karcher Group announced it has acquired Ossa Technology Solutions, LLC, a Managed Services provider based in Hartville, OH. The merger was completed as of Sept. 16 and all former Ossa Technology clients are currently in the process of being transitioned to TKG. “Managed Services is an exciting area of growth for TKG that makes a lot of sense for our business,” said Geoff Karcher, president of The Karcher Group. “This allows us to expand our services to our current client base in an area they already look to us for help. Now it becomes a value-added service that fully supports our mission of growing your business.” Gervasi Vineyard is proud to announce Nichole Cardinale has joined the team as the Marketing and Business Development Manager. As such, her goals are to market and build brand awareness of both Gervasi Vineyard and The Twisted Olive, develop new business initiatives within the local market within Canton/ Stark County, grow the business regionally in Northeast Ohio through travel and tourism initiatives, and to focus on new sales in high target areas of business in the corporate sector. Nichole has over 17 years of marketing experience in hospitality and travel and tourism industries. She most recently spent the past 14 years at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. For two nights each October, the trails surrounding the Wilderness Center are filled with the laughter and excitement of families discovering the nocturnal creatures of the Enchanted Forest. New this year, the corridors of the Wilderness Center’s Interpretive Building will also be ringing with nature song – the original nature songs of Orrville resident, Karrie McAllister. “Enchanted Forest has been an October tradition in my family for years.” said McAllister, who has previously donned costumes to serve as a character on the TWC trails for this event. “This year, I’m excited to be entertaining families with some original nature-themed songs and traditional, folk favorites as they wait for their turn to hit the trail.” This year, families

will meet Mouse, Tree Frog, Star-Nosed Mole, Salamander, Skunk and Flying Squirrel as they are escorted along those pumpkin-lit trails. These friendly nocturnal animals will sing songs, tell jokes and share stories of life in the nighttime woodlands. Following this 45-minute hike, families can return to the Interpretive Building for pretzels and cider. Stark State College will be the first college in Ohio to offer an associate of applied science degree in ophthalmic technology. The program, effective summer 2016, was developed in response to ophthalmologists in the region who expressed their need to the College for certified ophthalmic assistants and technicians. Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for credentialing examinations. For a second consecutive year, Mercy is the recipient of the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline® GOLD PLUS Receiving Award, which recognizes the hospital has reached an achievement score of 75 percent or greater for treating STEMI (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction) transfer patients within 120 minutes. This is Mercy’s fourth consecutive Mission: Lifeline Gold Level Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks. Tammy Long, Mobile Services Manager at Stark County District Library, is the 2015 winner of the Ohio Library Council’s prestigious John Philip Outreach Award. Each year the Ohio Library Council presents the John Philip Outreach Award to only one library staff member in the entire state of Ohio who has demonstrated excellence in the area of outreach. Candidates are nominated by a colleague in their field and an extensive application is submitted for consideration. In order to be considered for the award Long submitted letters of reference from patrons and colleagues. The references illustrated her impact on both professional peers and the people that she and her programs serve.
