There is no question that our biggest accomplishment of 2016 was the merger of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Jackson-Belden Chamber of Commerce. After accounting for duplicate memberships between the two organizations, we enter 2017 with a combined membership exceeding 1,800.

Entering 2017, we are positioned to offer broader and deeper levels of service to the region’s business community, from small business to major manufacturers and every business category in between.

Our management team is strengthened by the addition of Steven Meeks as COO and Debbie Busby as Director of Membership Development.

The six principles of our strategic plan, in its fourth year of implementation, continue to guide our every initiative and strategy. We surely see the chambers’ merger as a pursuit of Goal F: Reinforce a chamber culture of collaboration, integration and service excellence. In brief summary, our other five strategic goals involve the pursuit of: regional economic development, education and workforce development, Canton urban core development, support for regional travel and tourism, and public policy advocacy.

Highlights of the year began with our annual dinner featuring Jerry Jones, the owner, president and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys. He told the story of his life, his success in business and his ownership of the Cowboys in a dialogue with David Baker, president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

In April, we launched the Small Business Growth Network, another collaboration, this time with SCORE. It is the nonprofit organization of retired business executives that offers advice to small and growing businesses. The Small Business Growth Network will enhance our ability to nurture and support small businesses in our region.

Also this year, we helped to assemble a group of high-level organizations to discover common purpose in each organization’s strategic plan. Joining us

in what has become known as the Civic Leadership Group are United Way of Greater Stark County, the Akron-Canton Regional Airport, the city of Canton and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Other participants are The Canton Repository and the Stark Community Foundation.

Individuals invited to the effort are real estate developer Bob DeHoff, Jackson Township Trustee Todd Hawke, new Stark Development Board President Ray Hexamer and State Rep. Kirk Schuring.

Facilitation services are being provided by the Cleveland-based Fund for our Economic Future.

We are happy to report sellout crowds and much success at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival events, and equally happy to say that we continue to work with the Hall of Fame and the city of Canton in development of Market Square as the centerpiece of an attraction that will link downtown to Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village.

Finally, our Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation joined five other Stark County philanthropic foundations in formation of the Stark County Board of Trade, which purchased the 327-acre former Stark County farm in southwest Stark County. The Board of Trade’s goal is to offer the land for business and economic development. Partners with the Chamber are the Stark Community Foundation, Hoover Foundation, Massillon Development Foundation, DeHoff Family Foundation and the Gessner Family Foundation.

It has been an exciting year of accomplishments and significant positive change. With your continued support, we look forward to seizing new opportunities and furthering the pursuit of our strategic goals in 2017.

December Oil and Gas News Will the pace of Utica drilling increase in 2017? In recent weeks we have been hearing good news from people here on the ground in Utica country.

Our partner in producing our oil and gas business seminars, Joe Barone of Shale Directories in Pennsylvania, has said that the drilling companies are worried about staffing their drill pad crews. When production budgets were cut, many workers moved on to other jobs elsewhere. Now they are needed again. Can they be brought back, or replaced?

Here in Canton, Stark State College’s oil and gas training department has been receiving inquiries about the college’s oil and gas enrollment -- the number of students in the pipeline -- and how quickly they could go to work.

Speaking of downstream, commercial real estate agent Bryce Custer with NAI Spring in Canton reports a great deal of interest in land available along the Ohio River between East Liverpool and Belpre and across into the West Virginia panhandle.

This interest in land has been encouraged by the Shell Chemicals ethane cracker being built in Monica, Pa., and the cracker that PTT is expected to announce for Belmont County in early 2017.

Workforce, it is the great concern of all expanding businesses. Would energy companies be inquiring about finding workers if the drilling programs in 2017 were going to be the same as 2016 or 2015?

To take advantage of the business opportunities coming because of the ethane crackers, Custer has obtained a real estate license in West Virginia. It was Custer who helped Advance Power find the land for its Carroll County gas-fired power plant.

These indications that drilling companies are looking for workers puts wind in our sails as we prepare for our oil and gas business development seminars next year.

LEADERSHIP / MAGNET Do more than Vote! Government Leadership Academy Starts in January The Government Leadership Academy is perfect for civic minded individuals interested in learning about our government, how to impact local issues, and the importance of service leadership.

The next Government Academy begins January 31, 2017 and runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays through March 7. Most programs are from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and various branches of the Stark County District Library.

The curriculum is facilitated by Leadership Stark County staff, community leaders and Dr. Chet Bowling, Ohio State University Extension. ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL HOF Enshrinement Festival General Chairman Alumni Association Holds Annual Dinner The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival General Chairman Alumni Association held its annual dinner on September 14.

The event was emceed by Barbara Hammontree Bennett, current association president and 2009 General Chairman. Members offer assistance to the Enshrinement Festival in the areas of sponsor recognition, promoting community awareness and support in planning and producing the annual festivities.

The Association was formed in 1993 and has been comprised of general chairmen of the committees under the auspices of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Pro Football Hall of Fame since the inception of the Enshrinement Festival in 1963.

At the annual dinner, Maury Sullivan, 1994 General Chairman, presented an Award of Merit to W.W. Schaub Electric in recognition of their longtime outstanding and generous support of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival.

Since the beginning in 1945 when the company was formed, they have consistently provided great performance, with an emphasis on safety and workmanship. For many years, under the direction of Wes Schaub, president, the company has offered his company’s expertise to assure the safety and success of many Enshrinement Festival events, often even going the extra mile to provide in-kind support. The award was accepted by Mark Gold, Chief Operations Manager, and he was joined by electrician Paul Agarand.

Man Float in The Canton Repository Grand Parade, and by personally encouraging other area entities to support the Enshrinement Festival through in-kind services. In accepting the award, Chad Bailey noted the support of his family in contributing to any measure of success he has achieved. Present with him to enjoy the evening were wife Tracie, sons Caden and Cole, and parents Bob and Jo. Another tradition at the annual dinner is the initiation into the association of the most recent General Chairman. The ceremonial green jacket was presented by George Lemon, 2015 General Chairman, to Chip Conde, 2016 General Chairman of the Chamber’s Enshrinement Festival committees.

He was congratulated for being the exemplification of a true volunteer by having given so generously of his time, talents and resources for so many years. He was awarded a watch with the Enshrinement Festival logo and inscription to commemorate his service. Conde joins 48 other women and men who have held this prestigious position over the years, and he will continue to serve the Enshrinement Festival as chairman of the Steering Committee for the next year.

A second Award of Merit was presented by Dan Fuline, 2010 General Chairman, to Chad Bailey, President of Akron Auto Auction, a third generation business that employs more than 240 people and offers a public and dealer sale every Tuesday with more than 1,100 vehicles each week. For many years, Chad has supported the Enshrinement Festival by providing vehicles for transporting equipment, by sponsoring the 12th

BIZ BITZ Under the artistic direction of Cassandra Crowley Canton Ballet will present its sparkling holiday showpiece The Nutcracker sponsored by Kenan Advantage Group in four performances December 9-11 at Canton’s Palace Theatre. Performance times are Friday, 7:30 pm; Saturday, 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm; and Sunday, 2:00 pm. International guest artist Boyko Dossev of Boston and Canton Ballet dancer Erika Shi of Alliance will perform the roles of Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Canton Ballet dancers Tamaki Hoshi and Cameron Catazaro Hayward will dance the roles on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
