ABOUT THE HONOREES Award of Merit Over the years, William C. Shivers has been an active business and community leader. Bill is president of Huntington’s Canton and Mahoning Valley Regions and is a 27-year veteran of the banking industry, Shivers joined Huntington in 2007. His diverse background encompasses serving as a State Examiner for the Ohio State Auditors Office; Director of Sales and Marketing, as well as Vice President of Operations, for Quaker Manufacturing Corp.

William is very active in our community and currently serves as a member of the board, executive committee and past chairman for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce; board member for the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce; 2015 campaign chairman, member of the board of directors and executive committee member of the United Way of Greater Stark County; leadership advisory council for Junior Achievement of East Central Ohio; trustee of the Alliance Area Development Foundation board and executive committee; board, executive committee and past chairman for the Stark Development Board; trustee for the Stark Community Foundation; secretary and trustee of the Community Building

Partnership of Stark County; board member of the Downtown Canton Land Bank; board member of the Akron/Canton Regional Foodbank; board member of the Better Business Bureau of Mahoning Valley; board member of Athena International; Parish Council member and chairman of St. Ann’s Church. He received his undergraduate degree from Hiram College, Hiram, OH and his master’s degree in business administration from Franciscan University, Steubenville, OH. William currently resides in Salem with his wife, Lori. They have three grown daughters, Alisha (Dan Mitoff ), Morgan and Mackenzie. William and Lori are the proud grandparents to granddaughter, Kennedy.

Awards of Appreciation For nearly two decades, Betty Smith has used her talents to make her adopted community of Canton a better place.

Smith, also known as “Betty Mac”, moved to Canton from Chicago in 1998 after marrying Rev. Mark Smith. Betty Smith is a very dedicated community activist with a passion for music, neighborhood revitalization and youth. Betty works tirelessly even after retirement.

In October 2012, Betty co-founded and formed EN-RICH-MENT (ENjoying the RICHness of Music, Education, Nurturing and Training). She has also been the Executive Director since its inception. In an effort to better educate and prepare our youth to be productive citizens to our society, EN-RICH-MENT was created for under-served urban youth ages 5-18. Free music lessons in strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, art, dance, voice and drumline are provided every Saturday FREE of charge. During the summer they host a seven week fine arts camp. Oil and Gas News | November 2016 Experts in the chemicals and plastics industry see conditions that could lead to a growth in sustainable manufacturing jobs, thanks to the Utica Shale.

Here are some of the takeaways offered by those experts at last month’s Utica Summit IV, our annual seminar on the downstream use of Utica energy: Shell Chemicals’ decision to build an ethane cracker in Beaver County, Pa., to manufacture polyethylene will make it easier for other ethane processing facilities to be built in the Appalachian Basin. The infrastructure and workforce built for Shell can be shared by others.

New investments in U.S. chemicals and plastics manufacturing facilities exceed $40 billion. The industry’s raw materials, derived from natural gas, are available in the United States at a price that cannot be beat anywhere else in the world.

Creating polyethylene in the region (as Shell Chemical will do) could have a $6.4 billion per year economic impact on the region.

Plastics companies directly employ 73,400 Ohioans with a direct payroll of $2.4 billion.

UPCOMING EVENTS Community Salute ... the Blue Coats Drum & Bugle Corps. The drumline and strings perform at various events throughout Stark County. They recently established an arts and veggie garden.

Cyndi Morrow is a business professional and dedicated community volunteer who focuses on doing everything within her power to improve the quality of life for everyone.

An accomplished organist, who for 25 years played at her church in Chicago and now plays for her husband’s church, Betty also created and produced the Canton Idol talent competition, founded the NuZone Festivals in downtown Canton, Golden Dove Awards, the Canton version of “Gospel Meets Symphony” and in 2015 Percussion Competition.

In 1982, while working a full-time job and fulfilling a myriad of other obligations, she and a friend co-founded Wishes Can Happen, a non-profit organization located in North Canton that strives to grant wishes to children in Ohio who are dealing with life-threatening illnesses.

Since 2000 Betty has hosted the television program “On Track with Betty Mac” on Canton City Schools channel 15 in which she spotlights community events, organizations and individuals in a positive and interesting way.

Betty founded and served as Executive Director at Multi-Development Services of Stark County (1999-2009), a neighborhood-based social service agency that believes in the holistic approach to services. It offered programs for mothers with small children, a homeless shelter, transitional housing, neighborhood revitalization team, recording studio for youth, after school program for youth, community garden, and a health and wellness program.

Betty has also been an active volunteer with Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival including chairing the Fashion Show Luncheon. She has served on the board of the Canton Symphony Orchestra, Community Services of Stark County (now ComQuest) and various committees including Malone College, WIC, the Canton Museum of Art Kimona Exhibit, and PR Director for the O’Jays Weekends. In 2013 she was inducted into the Senior Olympics Hall of Fame.

Betty has authored two books, “Man with a Vision: Bishop Arthur M. Brazier” and “Unexpected Blessings in the Midst of my Pain”.

Betty is married to Rev. Mark Smith.

She has two children (Merrijo and Christopher McDaniel) who live in Chicago.

Entirely supported by donations, and with nearly 90% of every dollar donated going directly to granting wishes, they are able to grant up to 50 wishes per year.

They have granted a total of more than 1,200 wishes and Cyndi affectionately calls each one “a non-stop love affair.”

Wishes is governed by an all-volunteer 14-member Board of Directors who give unselfishly of their time and resources to help meet the Wishes mission.

Cyndi spearheads a multitude of fundraising events that are held each year, with the most notable being the WHBC/ Mix 94.1 “Wish-A-Thon” every August - the most recent one (the 9th annual) raising more than $160,000.

Additionally, as owner of Koala Kruizers since 1995, she is able to further impact the lives of so many, with a focus on children and senior citizens. Koala Kruizers offers specialized transportation for children and seniors via safe and reliable shuttle services for the greater Canton and surrounding areas. They often transport to medical appointments, adult and children daycare centers, and extracurricular activities. Koala Kruizers also volunteers its resources to support the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Canton Repository Grand Parade.

Cyndi served as the Chairman of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Concert & Fireworks Committee and is a current member of the Enshrinement Festival’s Community Parade and Canton Repository Grand Parade Committees. Cyndi was awarded the Junior League Women of the Year President’s Award. She was a recipient of the Aultcare 30 recognition and has been

inducted into the Plain Local Schools Alumni Association Hall of Distinction.

For nearly 30 years, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio has partnered with hard-working local families to help them discover strength, stability, and self-reliance through decent, affordable housing. With the support of countless volunteers and generous financial donors, Habitat has locally built and renovated nearly 500 homes, impacting more than 2,000 people in need. With an unwavering dedication to eliminating substandard housing in this community, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is a leader among U.S. Habitat for Humanity ministries and has been named the #1 affiliate in Ohio for best practices.

Beth J. Lechner has served as the Executive Director/CEO of Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio for over a decade. Her leadership at Habitat has encouraged the exponential growth of the organization which began serving greater Canton, and today serves all of east central Ohio, including Stark, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Harrison, and Jefferson Counties. Along with this organizational growth, Habitat has expanded its programs beyond new construction and renovation construction to meet the shifting needs of this community through critical home repair and minor home repair. Today, Habitat utilizes all of these programs through the recently launched Renewal Project - a four-year, $3.5 million investment in the holistic revitalization of one entire neighborhood in northeast Canton.

Habitat also operates Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Canton, a non-profit thrift store that supports Habitat’s home building and renovation efforts through donations and sales of new and gently used home goods and building supplies.

Surrounded by a community of donors and shoppers, proceeds from these two stores have built over thirteen homes since 2005.

When it all comes together, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is a Christian ministry, a multi-million-dollar home builder, and a thrift store that is on a

Holding to the belief that every one of us deserves a decent place to call home, Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio is committed to offering more deserving families a hand up, not a hand out.

The Stark County Hunger Task Force (SCHTF) began in 1981 when a group of Stark County residents looked at their community and saw something that made them pause: many of their neighbors did not have reliable access to adequate food for themselves and their families. The need they witnessed did more than cause them to stop and think -- it moved them to make a difference in the lives of their struggling neighbors.

Located in their homes and churches, this small task force of dedicated and impassioned volunteers opened four distribution sites where they served free groceries to 3,000 people each month.

Thirty-five years later, with 15.2% of the Stark County population, or over 57,000 people identified as food insecure, the Stark County Hunger Task Force continues to respond. As the need in Stark County has grown, so has the SCHTF along with it. Driven by a vision to decrease the rate of hungry children, seniors, and adults of Stark County on a larger level, a myriad of initiatives and adjustments, both internal and external, have allowed this organization to better combat local hunger.

The development of a Stark County Hunger Task Force pantry network is at the center of that fight. From Canton, Massillon, Minerva, North Canton and Alliance to Canal Fulton, East Sparta, Beach City, Louisville, and Waynesburg, SCHTF now supports over 30 food pantries across the county. By joining forces with member pantries, the SCHTF and the network at large are able to reach more people, making a greater, largescale impact on hunger. Throughout the pantry network, the SCHTF and its member pantries serve a 3-5 day supply of free groceries to nearly 28,000 hungry individuals every month – an over 900 percent service increase from those original 3,000 served at our inception.

After two decades of operating entirely on the power of volunteers, SCHTF brought on its first full time director six years ago. Today, the total number of paid employees is three staff members, with one who is full-time and two who are part-time. Regardless of this change, SCHTF’s hunger-fighting team would be nothing without the many wonderful volunteers who, like its founding leaders, graciously donate their time and talents to serve their neighbors in need. From those who work in the pantries and at events to the all-volunteer board, they are still, without a doubt, the lifeblood of this organization.

Commitment to health and wellness of our community through access to medications is the cornerstone of PAN’s services. This is accomplished through Medication – Education – Collaboration.

PAN’s hub of service is the PAN Charitable Pharmacy located at the Community Campus at Goodwill in Canton.

While the Stark County Hunger Task Force of today looks quite different than that of 1981, it remains grounded by the same vision as when it began: to alleviate hunger in this community and to positively influence the lives of those in need of food assistance in Stark County.

The Charitable Pharmacy relies on donated medications and samples through collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry, physicians and long term care pharmacies.

The Prescription Assistance Network of Stark County, Inc. (PAN) provides access for the most vulnerable populations to pharmaceuticals and education through the PAN Charitable Pharmacy, as well as collaborates with other health care providers and community organizations to maximize resources and provide effective and efficient services.

PAN was established in November of 2002 through responsive grants from the Austin Bailey Health and Wellness Foundation, the Sisters of Charity Foundation and the Health Foundation of Greater Massillon.

PAN was established as an independent 501 (c) 3 agency that would help all residents in need with prescriptions from any physician, clinic or hospital.

The outcome was to coordinate, reduce duplication of service and to be the “go to” agency for prescription medication needs for the uninsured and underinsured of Stark County.

PAN has a contract with Northeast Ohio Medical University College of Pharmacy to serve as an underserved practice site for their pharmacy students. PAN collaborates with most health care entities and providers to serve the medication needs of the low to moderate income individuals and families in Stark County.

Individuals who qualify for PAN services are provided with a benefit card and access to prescription services for a full year. PAN provides more than two million dollars of prescription medications to more than 1,200 individuals multiple times each year.

Special Award of Appreciation The Boards of Directors of the Canton Regional and Jackson-Belden Chambers of Commerce will receive a Special Award of Appreciation for their vision and leadership during the process to merge the two organizations. The merger followed nearly a year of talks between the two Chambers and their boards on ways the organizations could collaborate more extensively for the good of the region’s businesses and the larger community. The combined organization now serves nearly 2,000 members throughout the region.

BIZ BITZ During its recent Founders Day Donor Recognition event, Mercy Development Foundation awarded Randolph L. Snow its highest honor – the St. Augustine Award for Distinguished Service. This award recognizes an individual whose leadership and vision has impacted and helped transform Mercy Medical Center. A local attorney and community advocate, Snow is a dedicated servant leader to Mercy Medical Center. He served on Mercy’s Board of Directors from 2002 to 2011 and was also a member of the Mercy Development Foundation Board from 2011 through 2015. Snow chaired the Mercy Fund Development Committee and initiated the Planned Giving Committee In additional Mercy news, Mercy Service League held its 2016 Harvest Ball on Saturday, Oct. 15th at the Canton Memorial Civic Center Auditorium. Mercy Medical Staff president, Aida Safar, M.D., served as honorary medical staff chair, and Julie Gill and Kathleen Prasnal served as Mercy Service League co-chairs. The event raised over $250,000, with proceeds benefitting the Mercy Facility Transformation Project.

Themed “Black & White,” this year’s Harvest Ball was an evening reminiscent of the roaring 1920’s, filled with fine dining,

dancing, fun and fellowship. The Harvest Ball, Mercy Service League’s signature fund raising event, attracted approximately 400 guests this year.

COSO Media, an Ohio-based Internet Marketing agency, and Virtual DataWorks, a COSO Media company, has announced that Steve Gosney will join them as an account executive for both companies.

Steve will be responsible for networking with their community to help businesses determine where they have opportunities to grow online as well as improve their I.T. functions. He began his career 15 years ago in sales with a Fortune 1000 company.

While there, he moved from trainee to branch manager. As branch manager, he serviced the Akron-Canton Airport and also opened the first branch in Jackson Township. He then had the opportunity to further his career as a branch sales manager in the financial services industry in Indianapolis, followed by serving as a sales director with Flagship Mortgage.
