Oil and Gas News | October 2016 “Mammas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.” Country and Western fans may remember that advice from Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, some years ago. Maybe not cowboys, but how about energy technicians? Stark State College has a good story to tell parents who are interested in exposing their daughters and sons to career opportunities in energy. Those opportunities come with scholarships for qualified students. Energy companies are continuing to invest in scholarships at Stark State to attract a new generation of workers that will be needed. In his report to the semiannual meeting of the college’s energy and environmental sciences advisory board, program director Dan Schweitzer said, “Anyone with a 3.0 GPA could enter the curriculum and receive a fully subsidized 15 credit hours.” He also said, “Every student who has earned a one-year certificate or a two-year associate’s degree (from the oil and gas program) has a job.” Among the companies that have invested in the future of Stark State students by funding scholarships are Chevron Corp., Marathon Petroleum and Chesapeake Energy.
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Chairman of the Board - Brian Belden The Belden Brick Company
to network with other community colleges in Ohio who want to offer the ShaleNet energy curriculum that has been embraced by Stark State. ShaleNet was created by community colleges in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas through the power of a nearly $5 million U.S. Department of Labor grant. Its goal was to create a common, industry sanctioned training program for energy workers needed for the shale energy development areas in those three states.

YSTARK! NEW DATE for PerplexCity: October 15 | Ready to Ready, Set, Riddle! ystark!, a department of Canton Regional Chamber, is back again and partnering with United Way of Greater Stark County Young Leaders Society to present the perplexing puzzle game that has taken Downtown Canton by storm. PerplexCity will be held on October 15 from 11 am to 2 pm. Gather a team of four and make sure that the whole gang is ready for a challenge that will take you all over downtown in pursuit of confounding clues. You’ll discover new and exciting locations throughout the city as you make your way to different businesses on foot. Each team will receive a clue to kick things off and then hurry from clue to clue, revealing locations in downtown Canton and beyond to explore. Sound confusing?
Don’t worry, we’ll provide instructions for everyone before the game starts. Remember: your team must hurry to each clue! You’ll be competing against 20 or so other teams, all racing you to the finish. The winning team will be the first one to solve ALL of the clues and make it to the end of the game, where they will be lavishly celebrated! Don’t have a team but still want to play? Sign up as a single and we’ll find the perfect team for you to join. PerplexCity - NEW DATE! (We’ll meet in Downtown Canton) Saturday, Oct. 15 11 am – 2 pm Cost: $50 per team (4 players) Register at CantonChamber.org
It’s wearing...it’s sharing...it’s a fashion show and then some! On Tuesday, Oct. 25, we recycle Wear & Share for an amazing fourth year. The evening includes shopping, a fashion show, competition, silent auction items, desserts, refreshments and charitable fun….all at the gorgeous Joseph Saxton Gallery in downtown Canton! Wear & Share is an original ystark! event that focuses on reusability. The idea was born out of the ystark! Reads Book Club. A few ystark! members read and discussed Annie Leonard’s The Story of Stuff which talks about the movement of reusing instead of buying new stuff. We loved this idea and decided to start it here in Stark County. And with that, Wear & Share was born. The Wear: It’s a fashion show of repurposed materials and clothing by local designers. There will also be hand-picked clothing, accessory and jewelry vendors for your own shopping pleasure! The Share: It’s a clothing drive to repurpose your gently used fashions. Who knows, it may even end up on the runway! The Goodwill Boutique will be open on-site for you to create and share your own high fashion ensemble. 6:30 pm – Doors open 7:30 pm – Fashion Show & Goodwill Challenge Register online at CantonChamber.org. Tickets are $15. Designers and Vendors can also apply online at CantonChamber.org.

In additional KIKO news, the KIKO Company was awarded the 2016 Business Longevity Award on August 4, 2016 at the Power Players Luncheon Series in Cleveland. The Business Longevity Awards recognize organizations based in Northeast Ohio with at least 50 years in business that demonstrate the ability to adapt and evolve with changing times. The awards were presented by Smart Business News in partnership with the Western Reserve Historical Society. Putman Properties is pleased to announce two agents, Joey Shirkey and Spencer Hartung. Joey, a Canton native, has been in the real estate industry since he joined Cutler in 2004. Most recently he worked with DeHoff Agency where he migrated toward commercial-industrial work. Joey is a multiple year recipient of the Ohio Association of Realtors Award of Achievement and specializes in listing, leasing and selling commercial and industrial properties. Spencer, also a Canton native, worked in sales in the logistics industry and more recently, hospitality management in Columbus. He is the son of Putman Properties, Inc.’s coowner and broker Wick Hartung. He will be listing, leasing and selling commercial and industrial properties. Ahmed Sabe, MD, executive director of Mercy Heart Center, recently performed the Akron-Canton area’s first transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) on a patient under conscious sedation. Lake Township resident Carolyn Thomas, age 78, was considered too high risk for open heart surgery and TAVR under general anesthesia. She remained awake throughout the entire minimally invasive procedure to replace her aortic valve and returned home less than 48 hours following the non-surgical valve replacement. It all starts with a great idea and that’s what ArtsinStark is looking for as they open their annual granting cycle. The Special Project Grants process is open to Stark County nonprofit organizations and individual artists (performance and visual). Awards will range from $750 to $3,500 for projects that will be completed by December 31, 2017 and affecting those living, working or being educated in Stark County, Ohio. The first step in ArtsinStark’s grant process is the completion of the Concept Form, available online at www. artsinstark.com/grants or at ArtsinStark (900 Cleveland Avenue NW, Canton)
through November 7, 2016. Over the last ten years, ArtsinStark has funded over $1.5 million in 600 Special Project Grants to Stark County non-profits and artists never before funded. Innis Maggiore, the nation’s leading positioning agency, today announced Jamie Smart has joined as project director. In this newly created role, she will strengthen and enhance the agency’s workflow process. Smart most recently served as director of communications and special projects at North Canton City Schools where she developed and implemented a strategic communications plan for the district. Part of the grantwriting team for the district’s 2014 $4.6 million Straight A Fund grant award, she also provided large-scale project management and communication support for the project. Previously, she was interactive project manager at ad agency Hitchcock Fleming & Associates, Inc., Akron, and worked in Cleveland, Northampton, Mass., and Jersey City, N.J., as account/ project manager at digital firms. Earlier this year, Smart was honored with the 2016 National Sales and Marketing Executives of Akron/Canton Accent on Excellence award. Thursdays were just freed up at the Canton Museum of Art (CMA). Thanks to a new sponsorship from Gasser Fine Jewelers, admission to the CMA galleries will be free every Thursday for the 201617 exhibition season. Museum hours are 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays, with the longer evening hours allowing greater access to exhibits for families and those stopping in from the workday. In addition to CMA Free Thursdays, the Canton Museum of Art’s free First Friday admission, events, and education station will be presented by Gasser Fine Jewelers. CMA will continue to be the “First Stop” to kickoff the First Friday Canton Arts District celebration with creative and unique events such as the Canton Arts District AllStars, Crafty Mart, and more.
