Canton Regional Chamber and JacksonBelden Chamber MERGER APPROVED! On August 16, our membership overwhelmingly voted YES on a merger between the Canton Regional and Jackson-Belden Chambers, and we thank you! We have now signed an agreement with the JacksonBelden Chamber of Commerce whereby the Jackson-Belden Chamber will be merged into the Canton Regional Chamber, with the Canton Regional Chamber being the sole entity. The merger has been approved by both organization’s Boards of Directors and memberships.

The Canton Regional Chamber will now serve approximately 2,100 members in the region, making it the sixth largest metro chamber in Ohio based on total membership behind Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton and Youngstown.

The merger will enhance the combined organization’s presence in the region, including expanded economic development efforts; strengthened membership services, benefits and programming; increased small business networking, mentoring and growth opportunities; and an overall broader impact on businesses and the larger community.

All present staff of the Canton Regional Chamber will be retained and will be augmented by select individuals from the Jackson-Belden Chamber. Dennis P. Saunier will remain as President and CEO, and Steven M. Meeks, formerly President of the JacksonBelden Chamber, will serve as Chief Operating Officer. (continued on page 13)

The Canton Regional Chamber will continue to be headquartered at its current location, as well as maintain a satellite office in Jackson Township. Members should see no interruption of service, benefits or programming.

Utica Summit IV to Focus on Sustainable Benefits of Utica Energy How does natural gas become a plastic product for use at home or work? Gas molecule can be reconfigured to become a raw material for manufacturing. Business leaders will hear about the plastics manufacturing supply chain at Utica Summit IV on Oct. 11 at Embassy Suites by Hilton at Akron-Canton Airport (7883 Freedom Ave NW, North Canton, OH 44720). Utica Summit IV, produced by the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Shale Directories and The Canton Repository, will conclude the Chamber’s fifth year of explaining the Utica Shale to regional business representatives who attend. The path for converting gas to plastic passes through an ethane cracker, like the one Shell Chemicals will build in Beaver County, Pa. Speaking about their businesses and their enthusiasm for Utica energy will be: Joe C. Eddy, president and CEO of Eagle Manufacturing, Wellsburg, W.Va., whose product line includes high-density polyethylene products for industrial safety and materials handling. Oil and Gas News | September 2016 For the latest on downstream uses of Utica energy, you will want to be at our fourth annual Utica Summit, Oct. 11 at Embassy Suites by Hilton, Akron-Canton Airport. One focus of the program will be plastics manufacturing. We invite you to visit www.uticasummit.com for program details, registration and sponsorship opportunities. Here is a review of recent oil and gas news that you might appreciate. CHK leads the way. Despite its diminished public profile, Chesapeake Energy still was the U.S. leader for production of shale oil and shale gas in 2015 with the equivalent of 607,000 barrels per day, according to Wood MacKenzie, as reported in the Wall Street Journal. Wood MacKenzie upstream analyst Maria Cortez spoke in Canton this spring at our Utica Upstream business seminar. Pushing back. Ohio and 11 other states joined West Virginia’s lead in suing the Obama administration over U.S. EPA’s new rules for methane emissions from the oil and gas industry. The lawsuit argues that the new rules are unnecessary and would add burdensome costs for oil and gas producers. “This is yet another example of unlawful federal overreach jeopardizing West Virginia jobs and working families,” said West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. “The rules are a solution in search of a problem and ignore the industry’s success in voluntarily reducing methane emissions from these sources to a 30-year low.” Pipelines and U.S. energy needs. OSU goes for CNG. Despite the reduction of enthusiasm for compressed natural gas vehicles due to the decline in price for its main energy competitor, diesel fuel, Ohio State University recently announced construction of a CNG fueling station for its campus buses. It is the first Ohio public university to take this step. Abundance brings savings. According to the Associated Press, West Virginia officials expect lower gas utility bills for two-thirds of West Virginia residents. Eight of 12 natural gas utilities in the state have requested to lower the purchased gas part of their rates. Mountaineer Gas Company, the state’s largest gas utility, has asked for a 6.55 percent decrease. Typical users of an average amount of gas will see their monthly bills drop by $2.21.

LEADERSHIP STARK COUNT Y Leadership Stark County Kicks Off 30 Years with Free Event Leadership Stark County is embarking on its 30th year of building community trusteeship through leadership development programs and educational resources. In honor of this anniversary, Leadership will be offering a series of special events beginning this September to say thank you to alumni, community partners, sponsors and friends. The first of these events is Motivational Morning: Building Resiliency, a free community event with motivational speaker Rob Snow on Sept. 30. In his show entitled “Minimize the Mountain,” Snow uses his background in stand-up comedy and personal experience to get the audience to laugh, be inspired, and build resiliency amid setbacks, both personally and professionally. As the father of a child with special needs, Snow uses that experience to show the audience how to break down an obstacle or “minimize the mountain” until it’s manageable, and come out even stronger on the other side. Snow reminds the audience that the manner in which we handle adversity is what not only separates us, but drives our success. This event is free but registration is required. CO VER STORIES ... Chamber Merger ... (continued from cover) The merger follows nearly a year of talks between the two Chambers and their boards on ways the organizations could collaborate more extensively for the good of the region’s businesses and the larger community, including hiring an external consultant to guide the process. The official merger process began in November 2015 and included a series of forums in April and June to gain the feedback of both sets of Board members and Chamber members. “This is a historic move for our region,” said Saunier. “Our combined organization will represent a level of service, business interests and economic growth that is unprecedented in Stark County. I look forward to welcoming the Jackson-Belden team; a group with whom we share similar values and a commitment to business growth in Stark County and beyond.” “Our merger with the Canton Regional Chamber allows us to offer our members a broader range of services, deeper pool of business expertise and expanded array of programming,” said Meeks. “I am excited for the opportunity to offer our business community a level of value they haven’t seen before. This is truly great news for both regional businesses and the larger community.” We will keep our membership posted as we work over the next few weeks and months to combine the two organizations.

Canton Kickoff Weekend ... (continued from cover) Thursday will kick off with a jammed-packed schedule. Kids and adults alike can test out their football skills at the Mini-Combine from 4:00-6:00 pm.
