Renato “Ren” Camacho is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Akron-Canton Airport following a unanimous appointment by the Airport Authority’s Board of Trustees in 2018.

Ren’s core responsibilities include leading a 50 member team of airport employees, strategic planning for the future of the airport, and directing all capital improvement programs. Specifically, Ren ensures the airport is a vital, economic engine that increases economic activity and pride to Northeast Ohio.

Ren has over 28 years of professional experience in the aviation and transportation engineering sectors, specializing in program management and customer service. He has implemented over $350M of federally- and locallyfunded projects for initiatives including: runway safety area improvements, master plans, lease negotiations with airlines, new business development initiatives, and major airport infrastructure projects.

Most recently, Ren served as Chief of Planning and Engineering with the City of Cleveland’s Department of Port Control which oversees Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, Burke Lakefront Airport, and the Lakefront Harbors. Prior to his Cleveland tenure, Ren spent 14 years with the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, working in various capacities to complete

major capital infrastructure projects including: World Trade Center site, George Washington Bridge, NY metro airports, Port Authority Bus Terminal, and Holland/ Lincoln Tunnels.

Throughout his career, Ren has strived to identify the operational and business aspects of long-range infrastructure, facility planning, and development initiatives. He possesses a sound knowledge of FAA requirements including CFR Part 139 certification, airport security plans, airport planning, noise compatibility, lease agreements and grant assurances. Ren received his Masters Degree in Transportation Planning & Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of New York University and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He serves on the Akron Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau Board of Directors, American Heart Association Stark County Executive Leadership Team, Aultman Health Foundation Board of Directors, Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Greater Akron Chamber Board of Directors, Lake Township Board of Directors, Stark Economic Development Board of Directors, and Visit Canton Board of Directors.

Ren has also received the designation of Accredited Airport Executive from the American Association of Airport Executives. He is a licensed professional engineer in the state of Ohio and Professional Traffic Operations Engineer, plus has received numerous awards for his work in the civil engineering and transportation sectors.

Republic Job Fair | MANUFACTURING UPDATE

The news of Republic Steel on idle has turned the lives of 200 hourly workers and 50+ salaried workers on end. Once this news broke, our office was on the phone to the City of Canton, SEDB, Ohio Means Jobs, Republic Steel and the United Steel Workers Local 1200 to see how the Chamber and the Stark County Manufacturing Workforce Development Partnership (SCMWDP) can assist. Our intent was to also ensure support systems for this situation were coordinated and communicating with each other. We found out that all entities were caught off guard by the news that broke on August 11.

The immediate response from the USW Local 1200 president was they needed assistance in fielding calls from companies for a job fair that the USW was holding on August 31 as they had already registered about a dozen companies. The Chamber was able to step in and organize a registration system within a day.

Putting together the framework and the necessary communications of a job fair in a few short days for an event to be conducted in 3 weeks was challenging. But the Chamber was committed to support local employers and keeping the skilled manufacturing workforce in Stark County. The 40 companies that are participating are union and non-union as it was the desire of USW Local 1200 to help idled workers find gainful employment quickly. “Hourly and salaried Republic Steel workers are welcome at our job fair,” stated USW local 1200 president Todd Fitzgibbon, as he recognized all Republic Steel workers will be looking for employment and the salaried workers would not be competing with union skills, experience and positions.

There was a time when it would have been unheard of for the unions to work with the Chamber of Commerce or visa versa. The current situation demonstrates that many barriers have come down

and that working together and communicating is mutually beneficial. Every organization wants these workers to find gainful employment and our local companies need talented and skilled workers to thrive and grow.

GET MORE FROM YOUR CANTON CHAMBER MEMBERSHIP: VALUE IN BUSINESS AFTER HOURS

Membership in Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce goes beyond getting a listing in the company directory. The chamber provides its members with a number of opportunities to network at various times throughout the day, allowing members to attend when it best suits their schedule.

Business After Hours events allows for networking after normal business hours, usually held on the second Thursday of every month from 5 pm to 7 pm. While Tip Clubs and the AultCare QuickConnect series take place earlier in the day, Business After Hours gives members the opportunity to attend a networking event after the work day.

HOST SPONSORSHIP

Business After Hours (BAHs) events are unique in that they are held at different locations each month and are hosted by chamber members. Hosting is advantageous to chamber members who want to promote their location, products, and services, and is especially beneficial to restaurant members, because…uh… who doesn’t like to sample food??

The BAHs, and therefore, the hosting members are promoted in several email blasts to the over 1,800 business members and over 4,000 email recipients. Event pages are added to the Chamber’s website and multiple social media posts are shared about the event by the Chamber, committee members, and fellow chamber members. Often members who attend the BAHs take photos while at the event and share the images on their personal and company’s social media accounts, further promoting the host company and the Canton Chamber event to the social media followers.

MEMBER BENEFITS

Continuing to build relationships by networking with other chamber members in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere is the main benefit to members. If you are new to networking, BAHs are a great way to get your feet wet and meet new people, making attending other Chamber events less intimidating.

In addition, BAHs are included in a chamber membership for members, including their employees, associates, and guests ($15 for non-members). ystark!! members may also attend free of charge.

The Business After Hours Committee works very hard to be certain that everyone feels welcome and especially the new faces. Working together to help make us all successful is the goal.”

What Is a Tip Club?

The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce currently has five small networking groups that meet each week. These member groups meet for relationship marketing and to share information about the services they provide and relative information about their industries so that they can help each other grow and make better contacts.

People will always prefer to do business with people they like, know and trust. This will never change. In-person connections with others are a valuable way to market your business. The more people know about how they can help you succeed, the more they will strive to do so.

No reservations are needed and the groups are open to all industries. They are convenient and easy to fit in to any schedule. We order from the menu and you’re responsible for what you order. Bring business cards and flyers/materials that you’d like to share. People do a 1-2 minute business commercial where everyone gets the opportunity to share. This also helps new businesses and young professionals hone their presentation skills and be more comfortable making a presentation to others.

There is so much value in this type of interaction with other members. Long time business professionals mentor young professionals and young professionals breathe new energy and a better understanding of what it takes to succeed.

You’ve heard it said “it takes a village” and “we’re all in this together” which are very true statements. No one becomes successful by themselves. Successful people and businesses have an entire team of great staff behind them; support from business peers, friends, family and others. We need mentors and peers to provide information and assistance to help us become successful on every level. When you join the Canton Regional Chamber of

BUILD AN EMERGENCY FUND

What works for personal finance also applies to business finances. An emergency fund can help you deal with sudden and unexpected costs, changes in the business climate, the sudden loss of a key client or other shocks to your business. Having money set aside can help you weather the storm until conditions change.

KEEP YOUR BUSINESS AND PERSONAL FINANCES

Separate From an accounting and tax standpoint, it’s important that you keep your business finances separate from your personal finances. Not only will this make it easier come tax time, but this separation will also give you a truer picture of your cash flow and profitability so you can make quick adjustments when necessary.

CASH FLOW IS KING

When you’re cash-strapped, it’s nearly impossible to take advantage of new opportunities. And if you run out of cash altogether, that’s the end of your business. To keep your cash flow in positive territory, keep expenses low, take on debt wisely and focus on growing both new customers and revenue.

BE REALISTIC ABOUT COSTS AND GOALS

Starting a business is exciting. That excitement can sometimes lead you to underestimate what it will cost to get things done and overestimate what you project to earn. Optimism is great --and it’s okay to believe in yourself, your abilities, and your business. But be sure your projections are grounded in reality, so you’re not blindsided by an over-extended budget or projected revenue shortfalls.

SYSTEMATICALLY TEST CUSTOMER ACQUISITION CHANNELS & METHODS

Without customers, your business cannot make money. Obvious, right? That means you must master at least one customer acquisition channel to create cash flow. Only after you have one channel that’s driving consistent revenue should you direct a portion of those profits into new channels.

CAREFULLY CONSIDER THE TAX IMPLICATIONS OF YOUR BUSINESS STRUCTURE

Different business structures have different rules for how your income is taxed. With sole proprietorships, for example, your revenue

is treated as personal income. For corporations, you’ll pay corporate tax and possibly personal tax, depending on which structure you choose. Make sure you understand how each business structure treats income before you decide on one for your business.

USE DEBT WISELY

The romantic notion of an inspired entrepreneur maxing out his credit cards to build what a multi-million-dollar business is not a realistic guide for how you should manage your money. Piling up credit card debt to fund your business is dangerous. When used properly to manage cash flow on a very short-term basis, credit cards are useful. But to try and create cash flow by hiding expenses as long-term debt is almost always a recipe for disaster.

The Leadership Stark County Spotlight Program is now taking applications from young professionals in their 20s and 30s, who want to build leadership skills and expand their community awareness.

As our community continues to rebuild and forge ahead, it is more important now than ever for our young professionals to remain connected, informed, and engaged. For Stark County to thrive, it is essential that young professionals work, play, and stay in our community.

The Spotlight Stark County program can be a key element to helping young professionals make connections with a variety of people, learn about our community’s organizations and initiatives, and find their niche for meaningful service. Young professionals gain greater insight into their personal leadership style, leading to a more confident and capable generation of leaders to move our workforce forward.

Spotlight Program class members will receive:

The Pro Football Hall of Fame will commemorate its 60th anniversary with a series of events not only to celebrate the greatest of the game, but also to recognize the community that has given so much to the Hall.

The diamond anniversary of the Pro Football Hall of Fame – Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023 –marks a major milestone in the histor y of professional football and the history of the National Football League. The celebration will kick off Sept. 8 and run through Sept. 11, with events scheduled for each of the four days.

“This year marks a special milestone for the Hall of Fame and the community, so we want to celebrate this weekend together,” Pro Football Hall of Fame President Jim Porter said.

Buddy Parker, a two-time NFL championship-winning coach with the Detroit Lions, has moved to the final stage in the selection process for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024.

The Hall’s Coach/Contributor Committee concluded a spirited meeting that lasted over four hours Tuesday afternoon with Parker emerging from the group of 12 worthy candidates remaining under consideration as the Finalist for next year’s class. The Hall of Fame’s full 50-person Selection Committee will consider Parker for election –along with 15 Modern-Era Players and three Seniors – when it meets to choose the entire Class of 2024 early next year.

Parker would be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame if he receives at least 80% approval in the up-or-down balloting at that meeting.

In 15 seasons of coaching in the National Football League, Parker posted a career record of 107-76-9 (0.582 overall winning percentage). Included in that total is a 3-1 record in the postseason.

Parker’s Lions won 67% of their games in his six seasons in Detroit, including both the 1952 and 1953 NFL Championship Games with back-to-back victories over the powerful Cleveland Browns. The Lions were looking to “three-peat” in 1954, but the Browns dominated that game and won 56-10. It was Parker’s

only head-to-head loss against Hall of Fame coach PAUL BROWN in five meetings as the Lions’ coach.

Supporters of Parker called him an innovator on both sides of the ball. With Hall of Fame quarterback BOBBY LAYNE, his Lions teams unveiled what everyone now calls the two-minute offense. He also developed or modified defensive alignments to play to the strengths of Hall of Fame linebacker JOE SCHMIDT and Hall of Fame defensive backs JACK CHRISTIANSEN and YALE LARY to craft one of the league’s best units of its era.

The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and AultCare have partnered together to o er a healthcare plan for the small business community through a Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangement (MEWA). The MEWA was developed to provide additional options and to help control the costs of healthcare bene ts. Medically underwritten MEWA rates may provide a less expensive option than a smaller community rated plan obtained under the A ordable Care Act (ACA). This plan is available for small group employers with less than 50 employees.
