Calling All Middle School Students

WE NEED YOUR CIVICS KNOWLEDGE AND CREATIVE ID E AS !

The national civics bee, through the US Chamber Foundation, is an annual competition that encourages young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities through their creative problem-solving ideas. The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce is one of four chambers that is piloting the project in Ohio. Any Stark County 6th, 7th and 8th grade student or any student served by the Stark County Educational Resource Center is invited and encouraged to participate.

All top 20 students who participate in the live event will receive a certificate.

In the first round of the contest, local middle school students participate through an essay submittal. Students are asked to identify a problem facing their community and explain how a citizen or citizen group could solve the problem.

The top three students from each local competition will then advance to the state competition in Columbus.

The 500-word maximum essay will be evaluated on the following: • Demonstration of an understanding of civics •

Acknowledge and address opposing views

•

Acknowledge and address at least one Founding Principle and one Civic Virtue

•

Use of primary sources like newspapers, data, historical documents, images, or other documents that relate to the idea

•

Clearly describe a new or innovative idea

The local Stark County awards are: • First Place $500 • Second Place $250 • Third Place $100

Judges will select 20 finalists to participate in the local live competition which will test civics knowledge. There will be two rounds of interactive questions using tablets. The top three from the elimination rounds will have 3 minutes to pitch their ideas to the judges and answer questions based on their essays.

Do You Have “The Right Stuff” to Open a Business FIVE QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU BUILD YOUR STARTUP With barriers to entry lower than they’ve ever been for many types of businesses, it can be easy to overlook the fundamentals necessary for a startup to succeed.

While it’s certainly true that you can start a business today with no physical location, no employees and next-to-no overhead, relying on little more than a good idea isn’t enough. Behind every successful business is a dedicated entrepreneur whose sweat and determination made their dream a reality.

You’ll want to start by taking an honest assessment of your readiness to start a business and see it through to success. Here are five questions to ask before you begin to build your startup (the first question is the most important):

WHY DO YOU WANT TO START A BUSINESS? There are a myriad of reasons you might want to start a business. Do you have a passion for a particular product or service, and are you willing to do whatever it takes to share it with the world? That’s a great reason!

Do you just feel like not making the commute to your current job and would rather “do something else” instead? That’s probably not the best reason.

There undoubtedly will come a time in your business when you’ll have to rely on your passion to see you through. There will be setbacks and long hours and all manner of frustrations. At those times, it will be the vision of fulfilling your passion that will sustain you.

CLEAR VISION OF SUCCESS? What are the reasons for starting your business? Do you know what success

looks like? How will you know when you’ve “arrived”? You’ve probably heard the line from Alice in Wonderland: “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” That applies to new businesses as well.

How will you determine what it means to have a successful business? What is your “WHY”? Is it defined by the money you make? By the freedom it gives you? By the people you reach? Or the cause you champion?

Success means different things to different people. What does it mean to you?

WHO MAKES UP YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM? Nearly every successful entrepreneur has a cheering section they can turn to for inspiration. And many will have “practical” supporters, like a former boss or work colleague, who can offer insight and advice about business matters.

BIZ Bitz Refuge of Hope Ministries announces CEO, Duane Wykoff, has informed the Board of Directors of his intention to retire from the organization effective January 31, 2024. He will work with the Board to assure a smooth leadership transition. The Board will begin an immediate search to find Wykoff’s successor.

Wykoff joined Refuge of Hope as Executive Director in 2009 before his promotion to CEO. He previously had more than thirty years of management experience including responsibilities in employee and industrial relations, employee communications, human resources, and marketing.

Wykoff said Refuge of Hope’s goal is to work themselves out of business but the need is great in Stark County. “In the past three years, we have gone from serving 67,137 meals to 102,801 last year,” he noted.

“In the same time, we have gone from providing 11,561 bedded nights to 17,553 last year. The number of meals served and bedded nights provided are both records for our organization.
