Coming from a family of small business owners, John really enjoys working with companies to understand and pursue
the various policies and opportunities they stand to benefit from. Although not every effort results in a “win”, he finds it rewarding to facilitate conversations that identify real issues and solutions and work to achieve tangible results on behalf of small businesses.
John Rizzo received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from the University of Akron from which he is a proud alumnus. He also serves on several nonprofit committees and advisory boards within the region and participates on various panel discussions during advocacy-related events.
Coming from a large multicultural family, there is nothing John enjoys more than spending time with family, friends, and his dog, Bella. And, when Ohio’s weather permits it, he really enjoys cycling through Summit Metro Parks, golfing, and playing intramural sports.

Marketing Matters
ASSESSING YOUR COMPANY’S ONLINE PRESENCE & WHY IT MATTERS
A solid online presence is crucial for any business looking to succeed—whether you’re a local brick-and-mortar café, a service entrepreneur, a multi-location restaurant, or an e-commerce storefront. Consumers are savvy in researching products, services, and businesses before making a purchase.
Regularly assessing your online presence provides invaluable insights for re ning your marketing strategies and ensuring you connect e ectively with your audience. First impressions by consumers regularly happen online, and staying proactive about your digital footprint can set you apart from the competition.
THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR WEBSITE
Your website serves as an essential means of communicating your services, products, mission, values, and information on why consumers should purchase from your brand. For example, reviews, testimonials, FAQs, case studies, before and after images, awards or accolades are great content elements to help showcase and convince your web visitors to take the next step with your brand.
An e ective website should be easy to navigate and nd valuable content, whether before and after images of your residential construction services or nancial planning information. Your website should drive home consistent messaging and o er a clear call to action.
SOCIAL MEDIA’S IMPACT
You might be curious about how social media in uences your company’s online presence. These platforms act as powerful brand ampli ers, enabling you to connect with potential customers who may not have encountered your brand otherwise. They are an excellent avenue for fostering brand loyalty through exceptional customer service, personal interactions, and creating a vibrant community around your brand.
Social media enhances your content distribution by driving tra c to your website or building brand awareness on other platforms, such as your YouTube channel. Consistently posting engaging content has the added bene t of creating social signals that can also boost your search engine rankings.
BRAND PERCEPTION
Managing your online reputation is critical in an era where reviews and star ratings can make or break your business. Customer feedback on platforms like Google Business Pro le, Yelp and social media can signi cantly in uence potential customers’ perceptions. Actively monitoring and responding to positive and negative reviews demonstrates that you value customer opinions and are committed to improvement.
YOU VS. YOUR COMPETITION
To truly assess your online presence, it’s essential to understand where you stand compared to competitors. Conducting
a competitive analysis reveals gaps in your strategy and opportunities for di erentiation. Evaluate competitors’ websites for design aesthetics, content quality, and SEO performance. Comparing social media metrics can also provide insights into engagement strategies that resonate within your industry.
LEVERAGING DATA FOR GROWTH
Data-driven decision-making is at the core of e ective marketing strategies. Utilize analytics tools to gather insights about website tra c sources, user behavior, and conversion rates. This information can help re ne marketing campaigns and allocate resources more e ectively.
A CONTINUOUS PROCESS
Assessing your company’s online presence is an ongoing process that requires regular attention. You can make informed decisions that enhance your digital strategy by understanding your website performance, social media engagement, online reputation, competitive positioning, and data analytics. Being proactive is key; regular assessments will help ensure your company maintains a strong online presence while adapting to changes in consumer behavior and technology.

How to Find the Right Financing Option
Many small businesses need nancing for a successful - and sustained - launch. Finding the right nancing option is one of the most important early steps before starting or expanding a business.
There are four primary types of funding a small business owner can consider:
• Small Business Loans
• Venture Capital
• Self-Funding
• Crowdfunding
Each type of funding has its pros and cons depending on the amount needed, your level of risk tolerance, your willingness to relinquish equity versus pay interest, and the amount of capital you already have on hand. If you’re one member of a partnership, the dynamic of how your business is set up will need to play a part in your decision as well.
Here’s a deeper dive into each of thesenancing options to help you make the right decision for your business.
SMALL BUSINESS LOANS
If you want to infuse capital into your business without dipping into your savings or giving up equity, then a small business loan is the place to start. This type of nancing is also known as debt nancing. The most common way to receive a loan is by going to a traditional bank. Most have various types of loans for businesses and will lend money with payback terms and interest owed.
If you apply for a small business loan with a bank, most will require you to present a business plan, expense sheet, and a nancial projection for the next ve years. Be prepared to make your case for why your business is a worthwhile investment. Also, be sure to shop around with more than one bank to nd the best rate and terms.
SCORE has a number of business planning resources to get you started in writing your plan. Connect with the Canton Regional SCORE Chapter to get started.
If you experience challenges securing a traditional business loan, the U.S. Small Business Administration can support you with an SBA-guaranteed loan, giving a bank more con dence when lending to your business.
VENTURE CAPITAL
Capital investors trade funding for equity in your business with the expectation of a return. Typically, they also want some level of involvement in your company as further assurance that the business is being managed in a way that’s going to ensure they see a worthwhile return on their investment.
If you’re willing to give up equity in exchange for capital, as well as some of the control in how you run your business, then borrowing from a venture capitalist can be an e ective way to get the cash you need. Venture capitalists tend to have a higher threshold for risk than a traditional bank. So, if a bank denies your loan application, you may have luck with a venture capitalist who’s more willing to invest.
Like banks, venture capitalists will also expect to see a business plan with expenses and projections.
SELF-FUNDING
Depending on the amount of funding you need and the amount of cash you and your partners are willing to contribute upfront, self-funding may be your best nancing option.
When you fund your business yourself, you maintain complete control. There’s no bank or investor taking a cut of your pro ts or in uencing how you decide to run your business.
While self-funding allows you to reap all of the rewards of your business’ success, it also means you assume all of the risks. A major reason small businesses fail is that they’re underfunded, meaning they simply run out of cash. If you’re self-funding your start-up, you need to make sure you have enough cash before you start, plus a reserve.
CROWDFUNDING
Instead of receiving money from a single investor, crowdfunding is a way of securing funding through hundreds, potentially thousands, of individuals interested in supporting your business.
Crowdfunders contribute to your business and, in return, ask for a special o er. Other crowdfunders contribute simply because the company supports a cause they believe in. Whatever the reason, crowdfunding can be a great source of cash because it doesn’t involve taking on an investor who’s looking for equity. Crowdfunding contributions are also not a loan, so there’s no interest to pay.
Business planning is one of the things that SCORE mentors do best. By working with a SCORE mentor, you’ll have an experienced partner by your side to walk you through the entire business planning process. They can work with you to develop realistic nancial projections and determine the amount of capital you need to sustain your business and nd success.
You can reach SCORE at cantonscore@ gmail.com or 800-634-0245. You can learn more about the chapter, including upcoming workshops, at www.score.org/canton.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) total grant support of Stark State College’s NEO-WIN (Northeast Ohio Workforce Initiative in Nursing) program now stands at $3.98 million.
In April, Stark State was one of only 16 community colleges nationwide to receive a highly competitive DOL Strengthening Community Colleges grant for $1.75 million. Recently, the DOL announced Stark State was one of several initial grantees to receive an additional $2.23 million toward the program.
“The initial grant was a tremendous accomplishment for our students and health care partners regionally,” said Pat Roberts, Ph.D., vice president of marketing, advancement and partnerships at Stark State. “It has now become even more impactful with the additional grant award. This critical initiative will enable Stark State to work closely with hospitals in the region to graduate more nurses.”
The NEO-WIN project is a regional, careerbuilding partnership among Stark State, employers, workforce organizations and other industry stakeholders. Its objective is to recruit, retain and provide career enhancement opportunities to underserved students in registered nursing (RN) and licensed practical nursing (LPN). Grant funds will be used to increase enrollment, graduation and connections with health care employers in the College’s nursing programs, with a focus on underserved students. The most recent grant award will also provide funds for additional project personnel, data management, and enhanced coaching and supportive services for students.
Nursing is one of the most in-demand careers in the region, state and nation. Stark State offers students an affordable and achievable into the field through several high-quality programs that are aligned with local hospital and health care needs.

My primary focus is to help home buyers in every way that I can to make the home buying process enjoyable, fun & a success.
I work with first time home buyers to help them understand the process of buying a home. I’m available to them anytime to answer all of their questions & concerns. We have fun together looking at different styles of houses until we find the perfect home for them to call their own.
Working with people that are downsizing or up sizing is always an exciting time. I specialize in being a seller’s agent & a buyer’s
agent. So, listing a house for sale while looking for a new place to call home will be easier with my professional assistance.
Building strong relationships with investors is a priority, because I am a believer in making our community a better place to live. I feel working with them to find investment opportunities is rewarding.
I specialize in selling houses & getting the most money out of your property. I make sure that your property is priced right, presented in the best way & in the best places where buyers are looking.

The Canton Regional Chamber ofCommerce andAultCare have partnered together to o er a healthcare plan for the small business community through a Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangement (MEWA). The MEWA was developed to provide additional options and to help control the costs of healthcare bene ts. Medically underwritten MEWA rates may provide a less expensive option than a smaller community rated plan obtained under the A ordable Care Act (ACA). This plan is available for small group employers with less than 50 employees.
