Medline Industries to be first company at Mills Business Park The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce Foundation and DeHoff Family Foundation have secured the first company for Mills Business Park.

Medline Industries, Inc., manufacturer and distributor of medical products to hospitals, nursing homes and surgery centers, has purchased 19 acres in the park, and plans to construct a 300,000 sq. ft. facility.

The new Medline facility will create 30-35 new jobs with competitive salary and benefit packages within the first three years of operation. In addition, construction of the facility will lead to many more project-based construction jobs. The company and its employees expect to spend an estimated $500,000 annually with area establishments and qualified service providers.

Project investment is estimated at between $12 and $14 million including land, building construction and new machinery and equipment.

Construction on the project is slated to begin in the spring of 2010.

There was an aggressive incentive package offered by the City of Canton, led by Mayor William J. Healy II, and development director Robert Torres, Stark County Commissioners, the State of Ohio, Stark Development Board, Canton Township Trustees and Canton Local School Board. The Employment Source has also offered to help the company with recruiting potential employees. This was a successful team approach that demonstrates Canton offers a competitive business climate. The Canton Palace Theatre opened as a vaudeville and movie palace in 1926. NEW STARK COUNTY INITIATIVE encourages education, celebrates success A new local initiative, Building Stark By Degrees, encourages young people and their parents to make plans for a college education. Building Stark By Degrees celebrates the success stories of educational achievement in Stark County.

The initiative is centered around the website BuildingStarkByDegrees.org, which tells the stories of young people who have joined the ranks of college students, often through dual-credit classes while they are still in high school.

It provides college planning and scholarship information to parents and students. It describes the community’s commitment to raising Stark County’s chances for economic prosperity through education.

Though some families are naturally inclined toward college, others are not because they don’t think they can afford it or don’t know how to make a college plan. This latter group will find encouragement and advice at BuildingStarkByDegrees.org. (continued on page 19)

VOTE for your STARK COUNTY FAVORITES beginning April 12 The Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau is gearing up for its annual “Best of Stark County Awards.”The annual awards recognize Stark County venues and organizations in conjunction with May’s Destination Stark County month. Voting for the Best of Stark County Awards runs from April 12 through 30.

Destination Stark County Month is a month-long celebration of tourism in Stark County.

In 2007 the Bureau, in conjunction with the Destination Stark County Committee, created an awards program that allowed local residents to vote for their favorite community attractions, restaurants and events in Stark County as a way of fulfilling part of the mission to educate local residents. This program received RAVE REVIEWS from residents and companies; and with the generous support of The Repository, The Independent and WHBC News-Talk 1480AM / Mix 94.1 FM, these awards continue to grow exponentially each year!

The community will have the opportunity to vote for their favorites in a plethora of categories including: best place to spend the day with family, best public golf course, best sporting event, best art gallery and the best tastes of Stark County, just to name a few.

Third annual

BLUES IN SCHOOLS program bigger than ever

Blues in Schools is back again this year in conjunction with the annual two-day downtown Canton Blues Fest! The Canton Regional Chamber is bringing the history and culture of the blues genre to life in our area schools through this unique instrumental program.

Blues in Schools offers after-school field trips and class instruction over the course of the 14-week program, hosted at Kent State University at Stark.

Thirty-one students are enrolled for this year’s program from schools throughout Stark County. Nine of the students are returning from last year’s program and seven of the students have participated since the inaugural year.

This year’s program instructors include veteran blues musicians Bob Bowers (horns), Manny Cahill (bass), Scott Barwick (drums), TIm Hunt (keys), Jeff Poulos (vocals) and Mike Lenz of the Mike Lenz Band (guitars and harmonica).

The Blues in Schools Program will culminate with the participants performing on-stage in front of thousands at the highly anticipated Canton Blues Festival in downtown Canton on Saturday, June 19!

Perry joins Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival staff The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has announced that Laura Perry has joined the staff as event manager.

Perry will be responsible for working with committee volunteers, sponsors and other staff members to plan and stage the Balloon Classic Invitational/ Jackson-Belden Food Fest & Fireworks, Ribs Burnoff and Timken Grand Parade.

She joins the Enshrinement Festival department on a full-time basis after serving throughout 2008 as an intern marketing specialist with ystark!, the Chamber’s young

professional initiative. During the past year, she was employed as assistant director of re-admissions for Education Management Corporation.

Perry has a passion for community service and has been on the advisory board and fundraising committee for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Stark County.

Perry noted that her goal as event manager for the Enshrinement Festival is to see her work “positively influence those around me and directly affect the success of the community we serve.”

Enshrinement Festival announces Key Committee Chairmen - COMMUNITY PARADE • FOOD • STAGING • SPECIAL EVENTS The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Pro Football Hall of Fame have named the following key committee chairs: Brad Longbrake, Community Parade; Rick Lerch, Food; Bob Reolfi, Jr., Staging; and Joann Smith, Special Events.

Longbrake is partner at Reminger Co. LPA. A graduate of Wooster High School and The College of Wooster, he graduated from the School of Law at Case Western Brad Longbrake Reserve University.

He has been a member of the Community Parade Committee for the past 14 years with this year his first as chairman. He also served two years on the Grand Parade Committee. He and wife Suzanne have two children.

The Community Parade is scheduled to kickoff at 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 1, at Eleventh Street and Market Avenue North, and will travel south through the heart of downtown Canton. Longbrake will be assisted by vice chairman Bernie Bresson.

Lerch is a ten-year member of the Food Committee, with this being his second and final year as chairman.

He brings great expertise to the task through his ownership of Nicole’s Family Rick Lerch Restaurant in East Canton. He is a board member and pastpresident of the Tri-County Restaurant Association and channels his love of sports through his service as an OHSAA basketball official and ASA fast pitch umpire. He and wife Joanne are the parents of one daughter.

The Food Committee oversees the menu and wine selections and works closely with caterers to ensure the success of the food service to 12,000 guests at the

Reolfi brings 16 years of committee experience with him to his second and final year as chairman of the Staging Committee. Sales manager for Esber Cash Register, he donates his spare Bob Reolfi, Jr. time as a volunteer at the North Canton YMCA, which recognized his service by naming him Volunteer of the Year and recipient of the Matt Gestling Memorial Award. He and wife Joyce are the parents of one son and one daughter.

The Staging Committee directs the planning, preparation and production of the Queen Pageant, Fashion Show Luncheon, Enshrinees Dinner and Enshrinees GameDay Roundtable. David Kiddey is assisting Reolfi as vice chairman.

Smith, coordinator of student teaching and field experience at Kent State University at Stark, is heading the Hall of Fame Special Events Committee for the eighth year.

Joann Smith Prior to this position, she served as chairman of the Enshrinement Festival Souvenir Committee and was a long-time member of the Appreciation Party Committee.

Smith also continues to serve as co-chairman of the Ribs Burnoff judging subcommittee. She shares her musical gifts as cantor at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, and as a singer and secretary of the board of trustees for Voices of Canton (VOCI). She and husband Fred are the parents of two sons and proud grandparents of two granddaughters.

of Fame Board of Trustees Reception, which is staged as the first official function for the Enshrinees and their presenters, returning Hall of Famers and other out of town guests. Additionally, the Special Events Committee provides services such as emergency medical and dental assistance for guests of the Hall of Fame during their stay in Canton, and the committee is always on call to assist the Enshrinees and their families as needed.

Smith will be assisted with these many duties by vice chairman Linda Leitzke.

In 2010, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Enshrinement Festival will mark the 47th anniversary of honoring the legends of professional football, which includes conducting a world-renowned festival celebrating the annual enshrinement of football players, coaches and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The collaborative efforts of this leadership team, combined with the professional staffs at the Chamber of Commerce and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the dedicated team of more than 4,200 volunteers, will ensure the success of 19 unique events over a 10day period from July 30 to Aug. 8, 2010.

The Enshrinement Festival activities, attended by nearly 700,000 people, are expected to produce an economic impact of $30 million for the Canton/ Stark County area and nearly $50 million for the State of Ohio. In addition, millions will experience aspects of the Enshrinement Festival as events are televised and covered by other media.

The central focus and highlight of the festivities will be the Aug. 7 induction ceremony for the 2010 Class of Enshrinees, comprised of guard Russ Grimm, linebacker Rickey Jackson, cornerback Dick LeBeau, running back Floyd Little, defensive tackle John Randle, wide receiver Jerry Rice, and running back Emmitt Smith.

Leadership Stark County seeking applicants for 24th Signature Class Leadership Stark County (LSC) is accepting applications for its 24th Signature Class now through April 30.

With a network of over 750 program graduates, the Leadership Stark County experience benefits employers, individuals and the community. The program provides an excellent framework for honing leadership skills. Participants garner a greater understanding about local issues and resources and connect with community leaders in area government and business, developing immediate and long-term results and relationships.

Participants are selected in order to represent a wide range of businesses and organizations from throughout Stark County. The Signature Class convenes for an intense, two-day orientation seminar, followed by nine monthly session days focusing on topics such as economic development, human services, education and the justice system.

These intense sessions provide an indepth look at broad areas of our community, and then introduce specific skills to enable class members to act on the information. The participants work in small groups, designing and implement-

ing an asset-based project that addresses a specific community need. Program graduates often serve the community as board members of local non-profits upon graduation.

Many people are aware of their own profession and how it contributes to the greater good, but they often lack the perspective to understand how other fields interact and impact us as well. From the schoolyard to the workplace, one in six workers is a victim of workplace bullying. That’s more than the number affected by sexual harassment or racial discrimination!

Many employees are experiencing some form of abuse and this abuse can take many forms, including extreme violence, gossip, intimidation and harassment.

At April’s Safety Council luncheon on April 8 Timothy Dimoff, founder and president of SACS Consulting & Investigative Services, will bring this timely and growing issue to light.

“We believe that a community prospers as its overall educational attainment level rises. We are working hard to encourage more people to go to college, and this initiative and website is one of the tools of encouragement,” said Dr. Adrienne O’Neill, president of the Stark Education Partnership.

If you don’t know the Early College story, thirty-two young people left high school in Canton last spring with their diplomas and two-year associate’s degrees that they had earned over the previous four years from Stark State College of Technology. Many of those students took their Stark State credits and used them as a foundation for a four-year degree at a major university.

Did you know that Stark County now exceeds Ohio and the United States in the percentage of 18- to 24-year-olds who have attended college? The percentages are 51.5 for Stark County, 50.7 for Ohio and 50.4 for the nation as a whole, according to recent U.S. Census estimates reported by the Stark Education Partnership. Turning statistics such as these into stories of real people and their accomplishments is a primary goal of Building Stark By Degrees.

Gateway to Success, a project being conducted by The Employment Source and Arbor E & T, is continuing to recruit low income youth age 18 to 24 who are disengaged from the education system to participate in a program that provides employment and training opportunities.

Youthful offenders, youth in or aging out of the foster care system, migrant youth, homeless and runaway youth, and children of incarcerated parents also are eligible for the program. The goal of the project is to educate, train and place 100 low-income youth into entry level high-growth, high demand occupations within advanced manufacturing and health care. Youth will receive job readiness training, career exploration and occupational skill training and paid work experience. GED preparation also will be provided. Orientation sessions are scheduled every two weeks and are held at The Employment Source at 82230th Street NW in Canton.

At a March 3 ceremony in Cleveland, ArtsinStark received an $8,000 Dominion East Ohio “Community Impact Award” for its work on developing the Canton Arts District. Since ArtsinStark just kicked off its Annual Arts Campaign to raise $1,450,000
