Our tenth year of the Canton Farmers’ Market has experienced exceptional growth this year. New downtown events manager Erin Thompson has loaded this year’s market with 30+ new vendors and returning favorites— our most ever--and lots of diverse products for purchase. Make the Saturday morning Farmers’ Market a must on your “to do” list through Oct. 19.

Soon, we expect to see a façade improvement project begin at the former Frank’s Produce building on Court Avenue N., between Third and Fourth Streets. Mark and Robin Kratzer have purchased the building and are in the process of completely renovating it. Later this year, we look forward to hearing about their plans for the building. Stay tuned for more good news for downtown.

The City of Canton has announced that it will seek bids for the development of a comprehensive plan for the city. This plan will replace one that dates back to the mid 1960s. The plan is extremely important to the city because it will update previous

informational data, define land use, set new goals and strategies, and provide a roadmap for the future. We look forward to this exciting process and the benefit it will create for all aspects of our city.

Likewise, the Canton Development Partnership is working on the master plan for downtown, which was initiated and funded by the group this year. The plan has the potential to change the dynamics of downtown and create new energy. We look forward to working with everyone to develop and unveil this roadmap.

Yes, much is happening downtown. The new YMCA construction continues as the shell of the building is soon to be completed. This important project is expected to be completed

by January or February 2014. Soon we will see the visible presence of Stark State College in our downtown. The school’s presence will be extremely important to the Canton area, because it will become an essential training facility to support Canton’s stake as The Utica CapitalTM. We welcome the students, administration and faculty associated with Stark State College.

Vintage Canton Committee Longtime volunteers Julie Gill and John Kaminski are co-chairing this year’s event.

Gill is a small business relationship manager at KeyBank in North Canton. Gill was born and raised in Canton and has been with KeyBank for 17 years. She has held positions in sales and service at many branches in Stark and Summit Counties. Gill currently resides in Canton, and has been a community volunteer and chairman for a number of organizations and projects, including New Directors Board, Mercy Service League and the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Kaminski is an attorney with Day Ketterer in Canton. He focuses on estate planning and probate law, and also practices in the area of First Amendment and media law, as well as social security disability. He grew up in Canton and is a graduate of McKinley Senior High

School. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Northwestern University and his JD from Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. Kaminksi serves as the president of the board of directors of Community Services of Stark County. He has previously served as co-chairman of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce’s AultCare Fast Break Breakfast, and on the Community Advisor Council of the Junior League of Stark County.

Kaminski is a graduate of the 22nd class of Leadership Stark County and remains involved as the chairman of Asset Building Day. He is a co-founder and board secretary of the Josette Beddell Memorial Foundation.

First Friday Tidbits August 2: Tackling the Arts Whoever said that art and football don’t mix hasn’t played on Team Arts. The downtown players will be suited up for an evening of football-related art, music on the outdoor stage, and new projects flying at Translations, Joseph Saxton, Journey and Second April, along with temporary additions to the public art landscape, all in honor of the tradition that is synonymous with Canton. Watch for street closings as the big parade is the following morning!

September 6: Harvest of Arts Remember when Mom told you not to play with your food? Well, lucky for us, some folks didn’t listen.

And you’ll see their culinary creations as watermelons, squash, and other edibles are made into art this month. Special service projects from the Stark County Hunger Task Force will be underway, set against a backdrop of live music by Sugarcreek Acoustic Duo, Scarlet and the Harlots, White Buffalo Woman, and Elec Simon and friends.

October 4: Kids at Art The focus this month is on art made by children. Galleries and street displays will not only feature make-n-take activities, but also boast of the talents of budding O’Keefes and out-of-the-box Picassos.

Theatre, dance and music performances will also feature students from Players Guild Theatre, Canton Idol and much more.

First Friday is sponsored by the Stark Community Foundation and is celebrated every first Friday of the month from 6 to 10 p.m. in downtown Canton. First Friday is presented by ArtsinStark, The County Arts Council, and the Downtown Canton Special Improvement District.

4th Street Summer Concert Series rocks hard in August and September The Canton Development Partnership’s FREE 4th Street Summer Concert Series continues this summer with two upcoming performances: Hey Monea! on Friday, Aug. 23, and Hard Day’s Night, a Beatles Tribute Band, on Friday, Sept. 13.

Join us under the 4th Street Lights at Fourth Street and Cleveland Ave. NW in downtown Canton!

Each show starts at 7 p.m. with opening act Rob Thompson on Aug. 23, and Tasha Addessi on Sept. 13, then at 8 p.m., the featured band will take the stage and play until 10:30 p.m.

Canton Development Partnership unveils six new market-rate apartments for downtown living

T

he Canton Development Partnership, a department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, together with the Downtown Canton Land Bank,

have announced that the project undertaken last year to transform a blighted building at 400 McKinley Ave. NW has been completed.

The project, dubbed the Suites at 400, has resulted in the creation of six new market-rate apartments in downtown Canton’s arts district, along with new retail space.

The building was purchased in 2007 for $85,000 at a Sherriff’s sale and was in complete disrepair at time of purchase. The project began with the demolition of the interior of the first and second floors in October of last year, and construction began in December.

“This new project is in an ideal location near to the Canton Arts District, Timken High School Campus and the Canton YMCA, which is slated for completion in January 2014,” said Gill.

The Canton Development Partnership has engaged Cutler Real Estate to assist in marketing the property, as well as performing the intake of applications and other documentation.

Leasing of the units is now available beginning at one dollar per square foot, plus utilities, and two of the apartments have already found their first tenants. For more information about the units, contact Cutler Real Estate realtor Tricia Reed at (330) 232-0401.

The one-bedroom units range in size from 523 to 651 square feet and include a kitchen, bath, living room, laundry room and closets, along with a suite of appliances. Each unit is equipped with central air conditioning, gas heat, onsite parking and an additional secured onsite storage area. All units have hardwood floors and decorative exposed brick wall accents. The general contractor for the project was Fred Olivieri Construction.

“These new apartments are designed to demonstrate the need for market rate housing in downtown Canton. Market rate housing is a crucial step in creating more activity and demand for retail establishments,” said Michael P. Gill, director of the Canton Development Partnership. “Together with the Downtown Canton Land Bank, we are proud to have taken the lead in developing this important first step in market rate housing for the city.”

The prosperous beds are filled with flowers and veggies, tended to by gardeners of all ages and gardening ability. Everything grows in the Community Garden, from tomatoes to squash, to beautiful flowering annuals and perennials.

Canton Farmers’ Market Fall Bounty

T

he Canton Farmers’ Market is spread over three seasons, and late summer and fall bring some incredible color to the culinary palette. Each Saturday, there is a cornucopia of produce, including pumpkins, gourds, apples and cooler fall crops.

Stark State College purchases Cornerstone II for new downtown Canton satellite center The good news is quickly spreading about

College’s

new

Downtown Canton Satellite Center and Energy Institute, scheduled to open in late 2014 or early 2015.

The College has purchased Cornerstone II, located at 400 Third St. SE, for $4.9 million as part of a $10 million State of Ohio capital appropriation. The new center will consolidate several downtown locations, currently serving about 1,200 Stark State students, and also will become a regional training hub for the College’s expanding oil and gas programs.

“The efficiency of having one downtown site will allow us to better serve students and develop additional programs to meet workforce demands, especially in the oil and gas industry and its growing supply chain in Stark and surrounding counties,” said Dr. Para M. Jones, president of Stark State College.

The College will use the remaining $5.1 million of the state appropriation to remodel and equip the building. An additional $500,000 grant from The Timken Foundation will support equipment purchases.

“The Board of Trustees carefully evaluated numerous downtown locations, taking into consideration the needs of our students, current and future academic programs, room for future growth, interstate access and the impact of our satellite center on downtown revitalization,” said Jones.

“Cornerstone II meets all these criteria and the location provides excellent access from SR 30, SR 43 and I-77.

“Thanks to its strategic location, our new Downtown Satellite has the unique advantage of being both the gateway to Downtown Canton, right off of the Cherry Street Bridge, and the gateway to oil and gas sites to the south and east of our city,” she added.

Stark State also is part of a four-college consortium funded through a $14.9 million

U.S. Department of Labor grant to develop and implement the first-ever national curriculum for shale oil and gas. Stark State will receive $2.76 million of that grant to provide the ShaleNET credit curriculum in the Utica Shale region and will offer those courses at the downtown site when it opens.

In the energy field, Stark State College has for many years led in programming, training and research partnerships with international and world-renowned companies such as The Timken Company, Lockheed Martin and LG Fuel Cell Systems Inc. (formerly Rolls-Royce Fuel Cell Systems), which has its global headquarters on Stark State’s main campus.

Journey Art Gallery & Studios began in 2001 when Su Nimon moved back home to Canton from a long tour in Denver as a freelance artist, designer and musician. Originally serving northeast Ohio as a source for graphic design services and photography, Journey Studios gradually began moving more into the fine arts. The gallery opened studio space in 2nd April Galerie in the fall of 2007. Since then the gallery has grown every year.
