Make It Better A roadmap for making Northeast Ohio a global leader in smart manufacturing with the workforce to power it was recently launched. The vision plan, called Make It Better: A Blueprint for Manufacturing in Northeast Ohio, shares success stories and strategies for future growth. “It is a vision for how Northeast Ohio can leave behind the Rust Belt moniker and become the Manufacturing Technology Belt,” says Brandon Cornuke, MAGNET, Vice President of Strategy and Startup Services. “The Blueprint focuses on four key areas: Talent, Transformation, Innovation, and Leadership. Manufacturing runs on people and we need to make sure we have the TALENT necessary for the technologyfocused future of the industry. We need to help our manufacturers TRANSFORM their factories by using Industry 4.0 technology to compete on a global stage, and to advance INNOVATION of new products and services. And LEADERSHIP within and among regional companies and organizations will get us to our goal.”
8
A Blueprint for Manufacturing IN Northeast Ohio
“While MAGNET created and launched the Blueprint, the future success means that it now must be owned by all of us, it’s a community initiative,” according to Michael O’Donnell, MAGNET, Vice President, Operations. “We’re excited that there are companies and organizations in Stark County who support the Manufacturing Blueprint including the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. That’s the kind of collaboration and leadership we need.” Cornuke points out “One out of every two jobs, from factories to restaurants to banks, depends on manufacturing. The people of Northeast Ohio benefit from the health and well-being of our manufacturing ecosystem and we’re in a moment of opportunity for us to focus on ensuring the jobs remain here and we grow through manufacturing.” For a free copy of MAKE IT BETTER, A Blueprint for Manufacturing in Northeast Ohio, or to get involved,

Just What Constitutes Your Brand? During the first years of the 21st century, more than ever before, businesses have been touting their brands. In doing so, many if not most of those businesses have been focusing on or brandishing their logos or brandmarks, making them the centerpieces of their public identities. That’s fine – in so far as they go. Mistakenly, too few businesses have been emphasizing what, in fact, constitutes a brand. It is not limited to a logo, a color or type face. It is far more than an icon. Some businesses understand that. Thoughtful, more strategically focused businesses – whether purveyors of products or providers of services - embrace the enduring reality that a brand stands as a composite – of innovation, superior product design, quality engineering and manufacturing, attention to detail in assembly, reliability, superior customer service, unstinting integrity, community involvement, and respect.
10
Aggregate all of those factors and one sees that a brand, at its core, is reputation. That reputation results from a business’s culture, core values and commitment to customers, employees, community and other constituents. More than words, what constitutes a brand is a business’s actions – or lack thereof. That is precisely what thoughtful businesses have been recognizing and building – and will continue doing so as they keep adding to successes in the coming years. With those thoughts in mind, how do you assess your business’s reputation? Are you paying sufficient attention to feedback – both positive and negative? Are you recording feedback and periodically asking what it suggests? Does it tell you that you should be adding or amending a business objective? Does that feedback cause you to re-think the messages you are conveying? Should you be taking actions heretofore overlooked?
Some serious self-assessing could lead to strengthening reputation. GET TO KNOW THE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS WHO WILL SHAPE THE FUTURE OF CANTON/STARK COUNTY! EACH MONTH, WE’LL INTRODUCE YOU TO A YP WHO IS LIVING OR WORKING, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, THRIVING IN STARK COUNTY! Name: Nick Doyle Occupation/Title/Place of work: National Sales Executive/ Board Vice President/The Improvaneer Method - Stand Up For Downs Age: 32 Why are you interested in Stark County’s Young Professionals initiative? This is a great way to connect young professionals that are local to Stark County who share the same interests and passion to improve our community. What would you share to encourage other people to join? There are a ton of on-line professional networks but nothing can replace the personal connection people make when they get together in person and exchange ideas. The energy created is like lightening in a bottle. Did you grow up in Stark? If so, where? If not, where did you move from and why? Yes - I was born and raised here.
What do you see as valuable opportunities for YPs in Stark County when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? Stark County offers a significant number of opportunities for young professionals whether they want to work in a mid to large size corporation like Timken, Aultman or Diebold for example or build their own company and be an entrepreneur. There are many groups that help mentor young entrepreneurs. Also - I have found that the Chamber is a great place to get information about community organizations that need volunteers. No matter what your passion is, there is usually a good match for you. What would attract more YPs to Stark County? Affordable housing, access to transportation (airports, high speed trains, etc), vibrant nightlife and entertainment, high tech infrastructure What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Stark County or NE Ohio? I’m a sports and music guy so I typically will hit up some games, either local high school/college or the Cleveland teams. Also love to catch live music anywhere - lately I have been loving the Centennial Plaza downtown Canton. But many of the smaller restaurants and bars are bringing back live music. Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Stark County and if not, what would cause you to leave? Absolutely plan to stay here for the rest of my life (unless my family decides to relocate after retirement).
Why do you stay in Stark County, from both a personal and professional point of view? The quality of life here is great. Housing is affordable compared to other areas of the country. I love the change of seasons for year round activities. There is a lot to do here that interests me like music and sports and if I need or want to go anywhere else, CAK is a great airport to use, right in my own backyard. What do you like MOST about Stark County? I really love a lot about our community - but I guess my favorite is the Hall of Fame, the park system and there are SO many amazing restaurants to choose from. Because I don’t drive, I tend to stay near Canton so that is what I am most familiar with. What would you change about Stark County if you could? I would love to see improved access to public/affordable transportation. I don’t drive and the transportation I have access to either is expensive or GREATLY extends the commute time. A fifteen minute drive sometimes can take 90 minutes!! Also - beyond just Stark County, maybe even something that connects us to the larger cities like Akron, Cleveland and Columbus.
