A MESSAGE FROM THE BALLOONMEISTER
WELCOME Welcome to Stark County and the KSU Stark Campus for the 37th Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Balloon Classic presented by Aultman. The Balloon Classic presented by Aultman is proud of the pilots and crew it attracts annually to participate in this one-of-a-kind balloon event. Over the previous 36 years many changes have taken place. This year is no different. In 1986, Maury Sullivan kicked off the event with the help of the Canton Chamber as the first event in Football’s Greatest Week. Beth Davidson was Balloonmeister from 1991 through 1993 and Steve Dale from 1994 through 1996.Maury became Balloonmeister again in 1997 and introduced Team Competition in competitive Hot Air Ballooning to our event and he never looked back. Maury believed that team competition uniquely offered local and newer competitive pilots the opportunity to team up with experienced competitors, providing them the opportunity to learn from the best and enhance their competitive flying skills. The camaraderie offered by this format encourages the growth of the sport of competitive hot air balloon flying and the overall enjoyment of the weekend. I believe in that uniqueness as well. For 30 of its 36year history Maury has been the Balloonmeister of this event. This year he transitioned into his new role as Chamber Liaison and named me as Balloonmeister. In 1989 Penny and I started helping with Balloon Classic delivering Landowner Champagne bottles to flight crews in preparation for launch. I flew for several years and held every staff position possible. I want to thank our Fiesta Pilots for demonstrating balloon inflations and coordinated launches for our guests to watch. Seeing the crew deploy the envelope and then inflating it into a beautiful seven story high balloon ready for flight is always amazing. I also want to thank our Special Shape Pilots who bring absolute wonderment to all who gaze on their magnificent creations. Then if the weather is just right the pilots and their gentle giants float
PILOTS, CREW & SPECTATORS:
away into the sky to amaze kids of all ages along the way. Our community appreciates you selecting Canton, Ohio as a venue to enjoy our sport. We welcome you and hope for the best weather, enjoyable competitive races and safe flights for all. As a fellow pilot, I know you’ll enjoy the hospitality and enthusiasm of our residents Our committee has worked many hours bringing you a great event; an event planned and organized by pilots for pilots. Providing you a well-organized, pilot friendly event, challenging for competitors and fun for fiestas, has been our mission I want to recognize and thank all of our loyal guests who cheer on their favorite balloons whether it’s a competitor approaching the target or during the colorful Friday evening glow. The pilots can really hear the roar of the crowd as they approach the targets and appreciate the cheers as they drop markers to achieve scores or better yet, grab the yellow streamer worth $3,000 on an evening flight. Please pay special attention to our officials as they advise of low flying balloons approaching the field targets directly overhead and a possible need to move. I would like to specifically thank our sponsors who have supported us throughout the years. Please note our sponsors in this program; they ensure the future of this event. If you get the opportunity to support our sponsors through your patronage or even just to say thanks, I’m sure they will appreciate it. Thanks again and welcome to Stark County and the kickoff to Football’s Greatest Week. Keep Looking Up!
– Paul Suttle Balloonmeister –

The Balloon Classic presented by Aultman has been using team competitions for its races since 1997. In the early years of balloon racing dating back to the early 1970s, balloon competitions were always based on an individual’s ability to navigate. The sport of competitive balloon racing took a radical turn in 1996 when the first US Team Nationals was hosted in Guinette, Georgia. It was well received by the sport balloon community and introduced a new era of pilots working together, experienced aeronaut helping the novice.

The concept is simple; teams of three work in concert to reach goals selected by the participants or the Competition Director. The team participants are in constant contact with one another helping each other with race strategy, and reporting subtle changes in wind direction. Sometimes pilots must sacrifice their personal performance for the benefit of the team. In a world of big balloons and even larger egos, this was a new concept in balloon racing.

bers of three pilot teams. All competition involves races geared to the ability of the pilots to work together as a team to reach
Every race will involve one or more of the team members flying over the campus of Kent State University at Stark to drop a baggie on a target that is displayed on the center of the launch field. This gives spectators the opportunity to watch the skills of these pilots trying to compete for points as well as prizes. As an additional incentive to pilots flying into the campus on Friday & Saturday evenings, pilots attempt to grab a yellow ribbon that is tied to the top of a 20-foot high pole located in the middle of the launch field. It is a real thrill watching these pilots test their skills trying to maneuver their balloons as close to the pole as possible so they can “grab” the ribbon to win $3,000 in cash! Our sincere thanks go to Maury Sullivan and Pancho’s Southwestern Grille and Todd Hawke at GDK & Co., for sponsoring the purse for this exciting element of competition.
