anton City Council has approved legislation to create a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) in downtown Canton. The approval would permit open containers for beer, wine and liquor within specified boundaries in downtown Canton.

The boundaries of the DORA would generally be 6th Street N. (north edge), McKinley Ave. (west edge), 4th Street S. (south edge) and Walnut Ave. (east edge). Drinks purchased from permit holders in the DORA would be served in specifically designated 16 ounce cups. Patrons may walk freely within the DORA boundaries. Signage will point out the entrances and exits of the DORA.

The DORA represents a partnership between the Downtown Canton Special Improvement District and the City of Canton. The purpose of the DORA is to enhance the entertainment and cultural appeal of downtown Canton as a destination and also serve to enhance its economic appeal. Full implementation of the district is expected within the next few months.

FIRST FRIDAY! May | June | July

First Friday is a monthly party in the downtown Canton Arts District featuring themed music, performance and visual arts events and always a few surprises for adults and children. It is primarily a self-guided tour of local art galleries, studios, stores and restaurants. First Friday begins with a First Stop at the Canton Museum of Art @ 5:30, followed by the full-out event downtown from 6-10 p.m. Rain or shine. First Friday happens every month – year ’round!

May: Canton First Friday moves outside for May with the

theme Nifty 50s. Listen to 50s music, check out some vintage cars from Kempthorn Motors, and wander the Arts District and Court Avenue for a variety of food, fun, and art.

June: We are proud to call Canton home, and First Friday

wants you to come out June 3 to show your Canton Pride. Lots of fun activities will fill Market Square with fun for the whole family.

July: It’s the highlight of the year, Chalk the Walk! Tour downtown

to see over 20 chalk artists cover the streets and sidewalks of the arts district with original designs that are sure to delight. PLUS, it’s the city’s 4th of July celebration. Head down for lots of live music, food trucks, and funky art. It’s sure to be an exciting evening.

Live Music Saturdays return to the Canton Arts District in June, July and August. Make sure to roam Cleveland Avenue and visit George’s, Cultured Coffee & Waffles, and Buzzbin, and round the corner to visit the shops of 4th street, anchored by Arrowhead Vintage. Plenty of live music, art demos, and more to enjoy each Saturday night this summer!

DOWNTO Canton Brewing Company 120 3rd St. NW

Looking for a new downtown restaurant to add to the lunch rotation? Try Canton Brewing Company, which now serves lunch Tuesday-Saturday starting at 11am. The lunch menu has a variety of “upscale pub” sandwiches, wraps, all-beef hot dogs, and burgers, plus soups and salads. Guests can also order off the dinner or pizza menu. Open 11am-10am, Tuesday-Thursday, 11am-11pm, FridaySaturday.

Longtime downtown art studio, Canton Glass Works (John Boyett), has moved two blocks north to a new location on Sixth Street across from The Auricle. Downtown fave Cultured Coffee has changed owners…and added waffles. Under the ownership of Mike Nasvadi, the new and improved Cultured Coffee & Waffles now serves gourmet waffles all day long, including Belgian breakfast waffles (available with 14 different toppings) from 8am-Noon, and six savory waffles available from noon-close. Try decadent options like the Hell’s Chicken waffle, stuffed with spicy buffalo chicken. Open 8am – 10pm, MondaySaturday.

Popular downtown wine bar Grapes in a Glass has added a tapas menu to pair with their selection of nearly 70 wines by the glass and 50 craft beers. Uncork & Unwind at VINTAGE CANTON Annual Wine Event Happening Downtown May 26 Enjoy fine wines, chef-inspired cuisine from area restaurants, and live music in a beautiful outdoor setting. It’s all happening when Vintage Canton returns on Thursday, May 26, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. along Central Plaza North in downtown Canton.

As always, Vintage Canton will bring you the very best wines from area wineries and abroad, as well as quality craft beers from the Canton Brewing Company in the beer garden.

Guests will be able to enjoy small tasting plates for a nominal charge from downtown restaurants and Stark County favorites.

Patrons will also be able to enjoy cheese samples from Biery Cheese and Brewster Cheese as well as bread from Norcia’s Bakery and enjoy an evening of live music.

Longtime volunteer Julie Gill is chairing this year’s event. Gill is Assistant Vice President, Private Banking Officer for Premier Bank & Trust. Gill was born and raised in Canton and has over 19 years of experience in the banking industry. Gill currently resides in Canton and has been a community volunteer and chairman for a number of organizations, including the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and Mercy Service League. She currently serves as Vice President for Mercy Service League.

Tickets can be purchased in groups of 20 or more for $25 a piece, $30 individual presale (by May 25), and $40 at the door. Wine-free spectator tickets are available for $10.

Ticket prices include eight wine tastings or craft beer samples, a variety of breads and cheeses and a collectable souvenir wine glass. Tickets can be purchased online, at the Chamber, Carpe Diem Coffee Shop (both locations) or any Fishers Foods location.

Small Business Growth Network Launched SCORE’S chapter based in Canton and the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce have combined resources to create the Small Business Growth Network. The organizations want the Small Business Growth Network to be a one-stop resource partner for Chamber members seeking assistance with their small businesses. SCORE’s nearly 40 volunteer counselors can provide confidential business advice at no cost to Chamber members.

Good timing played a role in SCORE and the chamber forming the network. The two groups began work last summer. The Chamber was seeking another option to help its small business members, while SCORE was looking for ways to assist more entrepreneurs who already were operating a business.

SCORE and the Chamber came together, formed an advisory council and took suggestions from area small business owners.

The Chamber is excited to offer members the program “whether they’re interesting in growing an existing business or launching a

new one from scratch,” said Dennis P. Saunier, Canton Chamber president and chief executive officer. The Small Business Growth Network is an outgrowth of the Chamber’s efforts to provide services to small businesses, which are the backbone of its membership and the business community, he said. Canton’s Chamber, meanwhile, had outlined in its strategic plan the need to develop a program for small business owners.

The SBGN will maintain an office at the Canton Chamber’s office in downtown Canton, as well as at SCORE’s office at Kent State – Stark Branch. Chamber members and others can get details regarding SBGN by accessing cantonchamber.org or calling 330.595.4575.

Vicky currently serves as president of Aultman Women’s Board. In addition, she is involved in the Women’s Impact, Inc., Canton Museum of Art, and The Auxiliary to VFW 7490. She is past general chairman of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival and a past recipient of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Community Salute Award.

The downtown Summit Neighborhood Community Garden is open and ready for business… the business of growing, that is!

Located at the intersection of Fifth Street and High Street NW, this year’s garden packs 85 individual beds into a private, fenced-off area. Single (9’ x 9’) plots are ripe for the picking at just $10 for the season. Tools, water and advice are all free!

All you need is your ideas, seeds, and a little hard work. If you are interested, please call Project REBUILD, Inc. at (330) 588-3205, ext 4. Reserve your plot now before they are gone!

Our gardeners use organic gardening practices and can grow for their own consumption, donate to charity, or a little of both. The garden will increase locally grown

food and help ease food costs for the residents of the Summit Neighborhood while providing a source of resident social interaction, building a greater sense of community pride and increasing personal connections.

The garden provides an avenue to engage both children and adults in food production. Bring your kids down to teach them about the complex relationship between food, health, nutrition and environment.

The downtown Summit Neighborhood Community Garden is presented by the Downtown Canton Special Improvement District and sponsored by Project REBUILD, J.P. Morgan, The Chase Foundation and the Stark Community Foundation.

Canton Farmers’ Market The Canton Farmers’ Market returns this June with fun entertainment, local flavor and the freshest food around! Along with local produce, the market offers baked goods, flowers, honey, cheese, eggs, meat, and much more.

Now in its 13th year, the market opens on June 18 and runs every Saturday through October 1 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Fourth St. NW and McKinley Ave. NW in the McKinley High School Downtown campus administrative building parking lot. Plenty of on-site parking is available.

With something “extra” happening most every weekend, you’ll enjoy nutrition and health education from Aultman Hospital, cooking demonstrations, live music, organic gardening tips, children’s activities, and more! There’s always something NEW at the Canton Farmers’ Market. With over 25 vendors, along with activities for the whole family, the market is the best way to kick off your weekend.
