Activities Galore You can look forward to carriage rides, singing and local dance troupe performances, children’s crafts and activities, and much, much more! The downtown center city is transformed into a winter wonderland for the occasion, and our local businesses will provide activities and refreshments as you take in all the holiday delights our community has to offer.

There will be plenty of free parking, both on-street and in the Timken High School and Stark County District Library parking lots, as well as parking in various decks and lots throughout downtown for a nominal fee.

Utica Summit Recap: Moving Ohio’s Economy Forward

by David Kaminski, Director of Energy and Public Affairs We are so pleased with the initial results of Utica Summit, that we and our local partners at The Repository intend to hold the event again next year. Tentative date is Oct. 15, 2014.

At Utica Summit, which was Oct. 23, 2013, at the Canton Civic Center, our nine speakers addressed 225 guests on new opportunities in U.S. plastics manufacturing based on shale energy. They showed how U.S. truck fleets are turning to natural gas as an economical and environmentally smart alternative to diesel fuel. Finally, they showed how a steel maker, the Timken Co., and a heavy equipment manufacturer, Caterpillar Inc., are producing for oil and gas and for the new fuel opportunities that are coming from U.S. shale.

Utica Summit was not like the oil and gas business development seminars that the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has been sponsoring since spring 2012.

These business development seminars have been about what is happening today in shale exploration, in production and in midstream processing.

Utica Summit, in short, was not about today but about tomorrow. It was about how the U.S. economy could be transformed by using the energy being discovered in the Utica and other shale plays. It was about big ideas.

Those big ideas included tapping the knowledge of friends of the Chamber such as Tom Gellrich of TopLine Analytics of Philadelphia. He has been studying the potential for robust growth in U.S. chemicals and plastics manufacturing based on the industry’s feedstocks, such as ethane, which is abundant in Utica gases.

Those big ideas also included the rapid growth of natural gas-based commercial trucking — for its economy, for its environmental benefits and for its fuel source within the United States rather than foreign lands. Frito-Lay Pepsico, with a manufacturing facility and truck fleet based in Canton, is an innovator in this movement.

More national corporations are following the lead.

These big ideas offered our audience a glimpse into the future of the U.S. and

Congrats to the Enshrinement Festival’s 25th Annual Photo Contest Award Winners Professional photographer Bob Rossiter of Canton won the coveted “Best of Show” award and $250 cash prize in the 25th annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Photo Contest for his outstanding Concert & Fireworks photograph.

The annual photo contest, sponsored by Western Reserve Group, was open to amateur and professional photographers alike, and any photos of outdoor Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival events qualified for entry. The photos were judged based on creativity, clarity, depth and color, overall composition and print quality, with ten photographers taking home cash prizes.

LEADERSHIP STARK COUNT Y Government Leadership Academy applications available now Endorsed by leadership of both parties, Leadership Stark County’s Government Leadership Academy is perfect for newly elected or appointed government officials, candidates, prospective candidates, members of boards and commissions, or anyone who wants to know more about the political process.

The program is facilitated by a professor of The Ohio State University, and the staff of Leadership Stark County, using curriculum designed by OSU. In this course you will meet with local and regional leaders, as well as build collaborations and strengthen networks.

Why did you decide participate in the program?

I wanted to be empowered with leadership and life skills to help me become a more effective leader in my community. I recognize that taking the path of continual learning, no matter what stage of my career that I am in, is beneficial to me and my success.

Describe what you learned about your leadership style during the program: I would say that my leadership style is democratic or participative. I have confidence in my subordinates and value their thoughts and opinions and include them in the decision making process as I make the final decisions.

How have you used what you learned during the program in your career or in the workplace?

I have used the skills and confidence that I learned to build commitment and translate strategy into effective actions within my organization. My positive leadership style is full of optimism and an “everyone has a purpose” mentality.

How has your experience in the program influenced your service and leadership roles in the community?

Each day is about connecting strategies to everyday work processes. It’s a demanding role for leaders, but an essential role for the success of the organization. My view on leadership has been enhanced because of my experience with the Leadership Stark County program. I have become more active in my leadership roles within the boards I serve on.

What is your most significant take-away or memory from the program?

Strive to be at the top, because the bottom is overcrowded!

And, you never know who’s watching! Embrace each day like it’s your last and take some time to think outside the box sometimes.

My greatest memory was during the Stark County bus tour, when I thought I knew every nook and cranny in Stark County!

Boy was I surprised to see that Stark County has some hidden treasures that prove to be valuable assets in our growing community.

I like to think we have no failures, just experiences and how we react to them!

How have you remained involved with Leadership Stark County since your graduation?

I currently serve on the Human Services Day committee and have been since graduation. I have continued to recommend others to this great program. I have also continued to attend a few site visits during the program year.

What issues do you think future leaders should focus on?

Bridge the gap between senior management, union personnel (for companies with a union) and the rest of the staff to align, build commitment and manage change effectively. Collaborate across the organization to gain critical perspectives, solve complicated problems, create buy-in among reluctant or nonpositive thinkers and manage organization politics effectively.

Build resiliency to effectively manage stress, uncertainty and setbacks that are occurring in companies today.

YSTARK! We’re spreading holiday cheer this year and you can help!

We’re thrilled to welcome the return of our holiday giving with the 3rd Annual Yuletide Fest, to be held on December 19 at Stark County Community Action Agency. The goal of this year’s special holiday event is to provide 100 new bikes and helmets for underprivileged children in our community. We’re happy to be partnering with a wonderful program, Head Start, to provide bikes to the kids that they support every day.

The newly purchased bikes and helmets will be distributed at a holiday dinner where the Head Start students and their families will gather to play games and learn about bike safety and how physical activity can lead to a healthy lifestyle.

Why are you interested Canton’s Young Professionals initiative? As a young professional working and living in Stark County, I am energized by surrounding myself with other young professionals who want to highlight Canton and see it grow. ystark! is a launch point for YPs to grow personally and professionally.

I have found exactly that, and more, with ystark! YPs. What is your impression of ystark!, their events, etc.? I feel ystark! has grown tremendously over the last year.

People say positive things about the mission, goals and efforts exhibited by members. The events are not only fun, but creative and allow networking to take place at inviting, local businesses.

I am eager to see what the next year brings.

Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I grew up on the Northwest end of Canton. I lived and worked in Columbus for four years while at The Ohio State University. After obtaining my Bachelors in Science, I moved back to Canton where I obtained a Master of Arts from Walsh University.

While in graduate school, I worked in Canton. Since graduating from Walsh in 2010, I have worked in Canton, Akron and Massillon.

Why have you chosen to live in Canton? When I see Canton, I see steady progress, development and opportunity.

There is always something to do and many opportunities for me to grow personally and professionally, all while living in Canton. I believe that the YPs of today are going to be the individuals who create the Canton of tomorrow, and I want to be a part of that!

What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area?

I own a home in Plain Township and have a Canton address. When searching for a home one year ago, I found there are many options for buying a large home for a small price. With the recent and pending improvements to luxury apartments and town homes, Canton (downtown specifically) has now become attractive to many YPs. What do you like MOST about Canton?

The feeling of small town relationships with large city options- art galleries, wonderful dining, small boutiques and historical architecture, with new and familiar faces. I love sitting on the patio and drinking a vanilla cloud at Muggswigz, eating at Bender’s or The Desert Inn, walking up Fourth Street, attending a Chamber event, and listening to live music at the McKinley Monument on a summer evening.

What do you like LEAST about Canton?

The fact that people don’t give Canton enough credit is the number one thing. I don’t like when people talk about all the “bad” things of Canton and have failed to seek out the opportunities that exist in our city. The more people learn, the more this will change.

What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? We have many international companies that are headquartered in Canton in addition to local companies that value YPs. There are many opportunities for YPs from an involvement and leadership perspectiveLeadership Stark County, Junior League of Stark County, Pro Football Hall of Fame, Canton Chamber events, etc. With the advancement of the arts district, I feel as if Canton is moving towards an increase in cultural access.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? I really think we are getting there- but, I would like to see more diversity within the YPs who live and work in Canton. We need more than the Hall of Fame or the Arts District to entice people to move to Canton.

There is a need to spotlight the many things already in place so other YPs will value and communicate the benefits of Canton when speaking to others.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? I love to walk my dogs along Schneider Park and back behind Gervasi during the warm evenings. Dinners at Bender’s, Lucca, Napoli’s, Jasmine, or one of the many options around Canton are always on the list. Seeing a movie at The Palace, attending an opening at Joseph Saxton, or playing bocce at Gervasi are also places you could find me!

What would you change about Canton if you could? I would like to see more diverse YPs living, working, and enjoying Canton.

Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? I plan on staying in Canton for my lifetime. My family, friends, and heart are in Canton. I choose to live here; I don’t have to. It is a great place to raise children and by staying in Canton, I can live an affordable and enjoyable life while visiting many other places along the way.

What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? I don’t think that I would leave Canton, unless I had to relocate for work or personal issues.

If I were to leave Canton, I would like to move out of the U.S. and live in Barcelona, Spain.

Attention group rating prospects • Employers may complete the AC-3 for as many TPAs or group-rating sponsors they feel are necessary to obtain quotes for a group-rating program.

• Group sponsors must notify all current group members if they will not accept them for the next group-rating year. The deadline for this notification is prior to the first Monday in February for private employers and prior to the second Friday in August for public employers.

In addition to identifying grant opportunities, Hammel’s expertise will permit her to assist faculty and staff with all stages of proposal development.
