Chamber “TIP CLUBS” are the key to casual, fun and abundant networking: NETWORK WITH MEMBERS AND MAKE WEEKLY CONNECTIONS OVER BREAKFAST OR LUNCH Exchanging “tips” with business counterparts and fellow Chamber members is one of the best ways to gain new business for your company. In addition to the popular monthly networking events at the Chamber, such as AultCare Fast Break Breakfasts and Stir Small Business Networking After Hours, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce is offering ALL active Chamber members the opportunity to build upon their liaisons and share leads during casual weekly breakfasts or luncheons. These events, or “tip clubs,” are part of the Chamber’s More Business Thru Awareness Club (MBTAC) program. Each club maintains 40 to 50 members with a diverse mix of industries. To keep the clubs interesting and the leads fresh, only one representative per company is eligible and there cannot be more than one company offering the same product or service. Tip Club Testimonials: “I can’t say enough how much value the Tip Club brings to my business. I moved here seven years ago to open a new business, and knew no one with the exception of my landlord and my general contractor. Through the Chamber’s Tip Club, I’ve gained contacts, referrals and direct business. More importantly, they have made me feel like part of the Canton community. I think I run into more folks I know at the grocery store, post office, restaurants, etc. than I did in the 10 years I lived in Rockford, Ill., before moving here! This type of networking is vital to all local businesses! Karen J. Barnard FASTSIGNS of Canton I have attended the Thursday lunch club for over a year now. Initially, I was not sure if the club was the right fit for me, or if it was the most valuable use of my time. Now I am 100% sure! I now have a wonderful group of people that not only support me in my business, but they also are amazing when it comes to dealing with LIFE. We share leads, business news, community issues and topics, and we have become friends who know and support each other not only in business, but life issues and family. I now look forward to the Thursday lunches. It is so important to commit to attending. Short visits and staggered attendance will not produce results for you, but if you attend regularly, these groups are amazing. Brian Roach Christian Blue Pages “I have been an active Tip Club member for over 15 years. During this time, I’ve obtained over 200 new clients as a direct result of my involvement, and have made a lot of valuable business contacts. I’ve also made a lot of new friends along the way.” Eric J. Reiss, CIC Smith-Reiss Agency, Inc.

Timken and McFarlane named to leadership roles for 2011 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and Pro Football Hall of Fame have named two long-time community volunteers to leadership positions for the 2011 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival. The worldrenowned festival will celebrate the annual enshrinement of football players, coaches, and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame,“America’s Premier Sports Museum and Showplace!” Robert R. Timken, managing director of Cormony Development, LLC, will serve as general chairman of the Enshrinement Festival activities planned by the Enshrinement Festival department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. Robert J. McFarlane, national sales director of outdoors products division for Bruce Foods Corporation of New Iberia, La., will serve as general chairman of the Enshrinement Festival activities planned by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. With the 2010 Enshrinement Festival just a few months behind them, strategic planning for the 2011 Enshrinement Festival is already well underway. The collaborative efforts of this leadership team, combined with the professional staffs at the Canton Regional Chamber and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the dedicated team of more than 4,200 extraordinary community volunteers, will ensure the success of 18 unique and diverse events over nearly two weeks, tentatively scheduled for July 28 through Aug. 9, 2011. A tentative schedule of events is available online at www.profootballhofef.com. The Enshrinement Festival activities, attended by approximately 700,000 people, are expected to produce an economic impact of over $30 million for the Canton/Stark County area and nearly $55 million for the State of Ohio. In addition, millions will experience aspects of the Enshrinement Festival as events are televised and covered by other media. With a record of success for the past 47 years, the Enshrinement Festival has earned its reputation as “A One of a Kind Celebration!” Timken will lead the chairmen of 26 Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce committees, who hold in excess of 350

His civic involvement has also included participation on the committee engaged in analyzing the local environment for attraction and retention of young professionals, now functioning as ystark! His current activities include service on several boards, including The Downtown Canton Land Bank, Mercy Medical Center and ArtsinStark, the County Arts Council. He is a member of the advisory council for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Final SCSC Luncheon to focus on past year and look to the future
The last Stark County Safety Council Luncheon of the year will be held on Thursday, Dec. 9. The luncheon will provide a review of 2010 issues and focus on plans and issues for 2011. The luncheon presentation will be made by the SCSC steering committee and committee chairman Susan Walters. Also at the final luncheon, the SCSC will host a Toys For Tots Holiday Toy Drive. Many children in our community will not get the items on their wish lists this holiday season. Bring some holiday happiness to these children by donating NEW, UNWRAPPED toys at the December luncheon. You’ll help make a difference for these needy children and their families. Be sure to get your company involved with the Holiday Toy Drive! The Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Division of Safety and Hygiene sponsors the safety councils, which chambers of commerce, trade and manufacturing associations, American Red Cross chapters or other local safety-minded groups organize. Safety councils inform participants of new safety techniques, products and services, and provide a thorough knowledge of topics, including occupational safety and health, workers’ compensation and risk management education. Visit www.CantonChamber.org to register for December’s Luncheon. Representatives from the U.S. Marine Corp. Toys for Tots Foundation will be on hand at the luncheon to accept your generous toy donations! Thursday, Dec. 9 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Meyer’s Lake Ballroom 3218 Parkway St. Canton 44708 Cost: $16 Reservations are required RSVP by Dec. 3

Young Entrepreneur Snapshot
Editor’s note: In keeping with ystark!’s mis sion – to attract, retain and ENGAGE tal ented young people in Stark County – ACTION will feature monthly snapshots of outstanding young entrepreneurs throughout 2010. Name: Josh Harris Age: 33 Company Name: In The Round Design Group How did you come up with the idea for your business/product/service? I’m what you might call an accidental entrepreneur. I’ve always been fascinated by both the creative arts and emerging technology. In The Round evolved out of freelance production work that I was doing while in college – and the next thing I knew I had a business on my hands. Today, In The Round Design Group is a full-service, custom communication design company that integrates those creative and technology components to create compelling and interactive media. We’re known for our website work, our cross-media campaigns (everything from billboards to movie trailers to the sides of buses), and our integration of multimedia hardware systems.
the problem, and then to get out of the way of our team so they can build a better mousetrap. Why have you chosen Canton as your home base? I was born and raised in Stark County and had anticipated moving away after college. However, In The Round began taking off before I graduated, and Canton became a natural launching-off point. For our locally-oriented services, it puts us geographically in the center of the economic circle of Columbus, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. And for our national work, the Akron-Canton Airport is perfect – our team can walk out of the office door and be in the air in under an hour. Few business communities are so lucky. How have the amenities of Stark County contributed to your success? As I mentioned, the Akron-Canton Airport is a critical resource for us. The proximity of a number of university campuses is also key to developing new talent.
I would say in the past, Stark County may not have been the best environment for entrepreneurs – too much focus on attracting large established industrial businesses. But I think many community leaders are starting to come around to the idea that small business is going to be the key growth engine for the economy and jobs going forward. Why is having a strong YP community important for your business? In some ways, we’re in the business of “what’s new.”We take the latest technology innovations of the web, mobile devices and multimedia hardware and put them into service to meet the challenge of helping our clients communicate with and serve their audiences more effectively. I think the YP community naturally tends to question the status quo. Because of this, they can be instrumental in pushing their businesses to think in new ways and seek out services like we provide. (continued on next page)
Which attributes best define you as an entrepreneur? I tend to question the way things have been done and to seek out new solutions; I think I have a natural ability to connect the dots from disparate fields of study. And I prefer to surround myself with a team whose creative and technical skills far exceed my own. So, my role is often to ask the right pointed questions, change the perspective on

Snapshot ... Also, at In The Round, we’re always on the lookout for fresh ideas – one of our best sources is our advanced internship program. It’s an extremely challenging experience for which we recruit some of the best students out there from the region’s universities. The best often move up into our residency program and then join our staff when they graduate. What are your thoughts on ystark!? I think ystark! and programs like ystark! (Spotlight Stark County) are critical to attracting, connecting and retaining young professionals. And it’s that group of young professionals that are largely driving the conversation on issues like environmental stewardship, social justice, technological innovation, community engagement, arts involvement, etc. All of these become contributors to a healthy, vibrant and growing community – which in turn attracts growing businesses and quality young professionals. So it becomes a big self-reinforcing cycle.

What advice would you give to YPs who share your entrepreneurial streak but are just getting started? You have to seek out new experiences and information like drinking from a fire hose. It’s certainly not for everyone. But if you can’t shake the bug, find individuals in the business world to mentor you – it doesn’t matter if they’re in the exact same business as you want to be, they’ll still have a wealth of valuable insights into the process of operating a business. Check out services like SCORE and the Small Business Development Center. Take the Encounter Stark Bus Tour. Get involved in ystark! and Spotlight Stark County. Call other entrepreneurs and see if they would be willing to let you interview them for an hour. What’s next for you? We’re actually in the process of two exciting and massive new endeavors….

Chamber’s Workers’ Compensation Group Rating saves significant premium dollars – submit your AC-3 today It’s time for you to begin planning for your workers’ compensation future. You are likely receiving information from many companies about their group rating programs and how much money they can save your business. While they may be able to save you money in the short term, these companies often lack the quality, comprehensive customer service and program stability that helps to ensure continued long-term group rating discounts. If your company is interested in group rating you should be considering the program that supports your local economy. As a member of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, it’s important to note that the Chamber has a partnership with CareWorks Consultants Incorporated (CCI) and the Buckeye Workers’ Compensation Alliance. Our Chamber program is one of the most competitive available. In addition to offering significant premium discounts up to the BWC maximum discount, CCI provides comprehensive cost control services designed to help maintain your group rating status. Your Chamber membership may already qualify you for this group rating program. Long term discounts, high savings, program stability and comprehensive quality services could save you significantly by switching your program to CCI. Any company interested in applying, whether a Chamber member or not, should complete the AC-3 group rating application form below or online here: www.careworksconsultants.com/groupratingapplication. CCI will provide a free, no-obligation analysis of eligibility. For more information about the Group Rating Program from CCI, please contact Robert Nicoll at (330) 452-1050, ext. 14. You may also contact Denise Burton at deniseb@cantonchamber.org or Terri Fullmer at terrif@cantonchamber.org in our membership department with questions.
Those interested in applying for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce Group Rating program should fill out the AC-3 group application form below and fax it back to Denise Burton at (330) 489-6005. Temporary Authorization to Review Information Policy Number ______________________________________
