Light Up Downtown, presented by the Canton Development Partnership, a department of the Canton Regional Chamber, returns for another year of downtown family fun. Light Up is your chance to explore 16 city blocks as they come alive with attractions, entertainment, refreshments and fun for children of all ages. The excitement is happening on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in downtown Canton. This year’s Light Up will feature Christopher Pop-In-Kins, every child’s favorite elf, in a very special musical main stage show that will light up the skies and light up your spirits with community musical acts, fantastic fireworks and a ho, ho, ho-liday visit from the man in red. You’re in for a night of surprises and fun for all ages! Best of all? This festive festival is FREE! Oil & Gas Developments Monthly Report by David Kaminski, Director of Energy & Public Affairs Canton, the Utica Capital, is unique in its ability to be a good host to the oil and gas industry. Not every city in a shale play has its own petroleum refinery. Thanks to the Marathon Petroleum Corp., Canton can process oil from the Utica. It does not have to be trucked or piped to refineries hundreds of miles from the oilfield. The oil refinery in southwest Canton was first built in 1931. It has grown in size and sophistication over the years, and it became one of Marathon Petroleum’s six refineries in 1998. Gretchen Plewak, the human resources director for Marathon in Canton, reviewed facts about the workforce and the refinery’s capabilities during an October presentation to the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee. She has since agreed to become a new business representative on the Education Committee. Canton Marathon employs 360 people directly and another 250 under contract. About half of that workforce is comprised of engineers and other college-educated professionals. The rest are carefully selected and highly trained refinery operators and maintenance specialists. The refinery can process 78 thousand barrels of crude oil and other raw products daily, and its end products are gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt, heavy fuel oil, propane, roofing flux and sulfur.

The third annual Stark County B2B Expo, hosted jointly by the Canton Regional Chamber and The Repository on Wednesday, Oct. 24, featured more than 60 business to business vendors and approximately 1,000 guests at an all-day tradeshow at the Canton Cultural Center in downtown Canton. The full-day lineup offered rich networking opportunities for regional business professionals. In addition to the exhibit floor, attendees attended excellent business programs—with topics including marketing, HR and strategic planning— along with the B2B breakfast session featuring Scott Rotruck, vice president for corporate development and government

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Pro Football Hall of Fame and annual Enshrinement Festival to celebrate 50 years of success As 2013 quickly approaches, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce look forward with great excitement to the collaborative celebration of 50 years of success since the Pro Football Hall of Fame first opened its doors on Sept. 7, 1963, and the first Enshrinement Festival events were held. Football fans everywhere are encouraged to plan to attend and enjoy all of the 2013 Enshrinement Festival events, which will take place from July 19 through Aug. 6, and also to mark their calendars now for Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013 for the 50-Year Community Celebration Day to be held at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It all began on Dec. 9, 1959, when an article heralding the Pro Football Hall of Fame appeared in The Canton Repository. The article, entitled “Pro Football Needs Hall of Fame and Logical Site Is Here,” made the argument for Canton, Ohio, because the city is the birthplace of professional football, with the establishment of the first pro league, the American Professional Football League (now NFL), organized here in 1920. The article also indicated that in order to make a Hall of Fame a reality in Canton, it would “require a combined Herculean effort on the part of civic and sports leaders, industry, and perhaps more important, just plain fans.” Civic groups quickly accepted the challenge, and by January of 1961, William E. Umstattd of The Timken Company made a formal

bid to the National Football League for acceptance of Canton as the site for a pro football hall of fame. And three months later, Canton was granted official site approval. Wooded parkland was donated from the city and a civic fundraising campaign had, by Feb. 8, 1962, acquired pledges totaling $378,026. Groundbreaking for the original construction was held on Aug. 11, 1962, and on Sept. 7, 1963, the 19,000-square foot building was first opened to the public, the same day that the Hall’s charter class of 17 was inducted. That same year, the first Enshrinement Festival events were held, including a fashion show luncheon, a dinner/dance, and a Saturday morning brunch. The events originated as a way to feed and entertain the Enshrinees and their families while they were in town to practice and then participate in the Enshrinement. Over the years, the Hall of Fame has enjoyed five expansions, bringing the complex to 83,000 sq. ft. Then, in December of 2010, Hall of Fame Board of Trustees announced a two-year expansion and renovation project, the largest in the Hall of Fame’s history, at an estimated cost of $27 million. The project was dubbed The “Future 50” Expansion and Renovation Project because its completion, scheduled for 2013, will coincide with the Hall of Fame’s 50-Year Celebration and constitute the foundation for success in the next 50 years.

The project will expand the museum to 118,000 sq. ft. and enables them to better preserve and present the evergrowing collection of historical artifacts and documents. It also provides major enhancements to the visitor experience and accommodates the growing number of Hall of Fame guests, especially during the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival. Likewise, the Enshrinement Festival events have grown from the original four in 1963 to a total of 19 over two and a half weeks, enjoyed by nearly 700,000 people and producing an economic impact of nearly $32 million for Canton/Stark County, and $56 million for the State of Ohio. A team of 4,200 extraordinary community volunteers annually joins with the professional staffs at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and Pro Football Hall of Fame to plan and stage the events that surround the central focus of the entire celebration – the Enshrinement of football players, coaches, and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which has earned its reputation as “America’s Premier Sports Museum and Showplace!” The Herculean effort referred to in 1959 still exists today, and has resulted in the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival’s well-earned tag line – “It’s a One of a Kind Celebration!” Stay tuned for details about the Community Celebration Day on September 7, 2013, and other activities being planned to appropriately mark this important milestone, and periodically check out the websites for more information as it develops at www.profootballhofef.com or www.profootballhof.com.

Endorsed by leadership of both parties, Leadership Stark County’s Government Leadership Academy is perfect for newly elected or appointed government officials, candidates, prospective candidates, members of boards and commissions, or anyone who wants to know more about the political process. The program is facilitated by a professor of The Ohio State University and the staff of Leadership Stark County. The award will honor entrepreneurs that have been in business for five years or less. Entrepreneurs are a rare breed of business leaders—they are driven by passion, innovation and persistence. Resourcefulness and success are embedded in their DNA.

SAFET Y COUNCIL Final Safety Council luncheon features The Power of Attitude The last Stark County Safety Council Luncheon of the year will be held on Thursday, Dec. 13, and attendees will be energized by the ultimate attitude guru— Marvin Montgomery! There are so many times in life that we sit back and wait for good things to come our way. It’s inevitable that storms will come into our lives and there is nothing you can do to prevent the majority of them. They could be health, finance or business-related. During the luncheon, Montgomery will share seven ways to maintain a positive attitude, even when things are not going your way. This engaging session is perfect as we move into a New Year! The luncheon will also provide a review of 2012 issues and focus on plans and issues for 2013. The luncheon presentation will be made by the SCSC steering committee and committee chairman, Colleen Maurer, who will complete the second year of her two-year term this year. Deb Schlabach will take on the duties of chairman for her two-year term on Jan. 1. Once again, the Safety Council will host a Toys For Tots Holiday Toy Drive. Many children in our community will not get the items on their wish lists this holiday season. Bring some holiday happiness to these children by donating NEW, UNWRAPPED toys at the December luncheon. You’ll help make a difference for these needy children and their families. SCSC has seventh-greatest Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Savings As we close out this year, it is important to note that the Stark County Safety Council’s efforts in the fiscal year 2012 yielded a total of $253,217.84 in discounts on workers’ compensation premium costs for member employers.

According to the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, close to 3,550 employers statewide received a total of $4,831,814.93 million in savings for participating in the program. The Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have partnered to research ways to create a safer work environment for employees working in the wholesale/retail trade and other sectors that have delivery, installation, receiving or material handling tasks. The solution is the Wholesale/Retail Trade & Material Handling Grant. Originally this grant was solely for delivery, but has now been expanded to include other material handling tasks. Join the Stark County Safety for a grant workshop from BWC representatives on Friday, Dec. 7. You’ll learn about the benefits of the grant, along with the research parameters and how it will benefit wholesale/retail trade and industries in order to help reduce injuries and illnesses, and improve work processes. Name: Alex Papadopulos Age: 24 Occupation/Title/Place of work: Process Improvement Engineer, The Timken Company Why are you interested Stark County’s Young Professionals initiative? I’m interested because I want to network with and get to know other future business and community leaders. What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? I think ystark! is great! The best part is how it has something to offer YPs of so many different backgrounds and interests. I started to get involved through the Service Committee, which has allowed me to be a part of some pretty amazing projects over the last year and a half. Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I grew up in Canton and lived in Cleveland for four years while I was studying at Case Western Reserve University. Why have you chosen to live in Canton/ Stark County? I came back to Canton after graduating because of the great opportunities available through the career development program for engineers within Timken’s steel business. Being here is made even better because I’m now closer to my parents and brothers and sisters.

What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area? I live in a historic building in downtown Canton that’s been recently renovated. It’s exactly the type of apartment I was looking for, plus I have a short drive to work and I’m within walking distance of my favorite coffee shop. I think there are a lot of housing options in the area, and they are generally very affordable compared to other parts of the country. What do you like MOST about Canton? Canton’s just big enough to offer a lot of the conveniences and amenities of larger cities without much of the hassle and inconvenience (e.g. traffic). Plus the location is great, with quick, easy access to the excitement of larger cities and Amish Country. What do you like LEAST about Canton? The overall negative view of the city that a lot of folks seem to have. It’s important to work on correcting the problems we face, but equally important to celebrate the many great things happening here as well.

Friday. I’m also a big movie fan, I always go opening night if something good is coming out. What would you change about Canton if you could? The weather…75 and sunny, please! Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? It’s hard to see that far into the future as a 24-year-old, but I wouldn’t be opposed to it. What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? I loved living in Cleveland, and there are a lot of other cities I enjoy, such as Baltimore, Md. and Savannah, Ga. But at this point, I’m very happy here. It would have to be the opportunity of a lifetime for me to leave.

What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? I think the opportunities are out there. As a YP, the trouble can often times be not knowing how to get involved, especially for those not from the area. ystark! does a great job of not only spreading the word, but also creating new opportunities and providing a way for YPs to get involved. What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? I think there already are a lot of the right pieces in place. That said, I think YPs would welcome interesting and unique housing options downtown to take advantage of (and support) the revitalization efforts. What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? I like to spend time with my family and friends, whether watching a game, playing volleyball or soccer, or going out on First

BIZ BITZ Crossroads Hospice has added two new editions to their team of dedicated volunteers: a miniature horse named Angel, and owner Janet Rankl of Canton. The addition is part of the “Gift of a Day” program, created by Crossroads Hospice to give patience their ideal day. Standing just 25 inches tall, Angel brings smiles and laughter to local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. For several patients who’ve been lifelong animal-lovers but are no longer able to take a trip to a farm, a visit from Angel truly is a gift of a day. Crossroads Hospice volunteers serve terminally ill patients and their families throughout the Akron-Canton region. As In The Round Design Group prepares for a downtown relocation, they’ve added two new graphic designers. Nathan Boyd brings panache to websites, logos, print and more. A graduate of Houghton College with an art degree and a concentration in oil painting, he brings more than six years of professional design experience to In The Round, helping meet the online needs of the real estate industry. June Kucalaba joins In The Round after securing a BFA degree from Kent State University’s rigorous Visual Communication Design program. She has several years of marketing and design experience in the electronics industry. Stark State College recently named its top faculty and staff members for 2011-2012. He will also engage in regional outreach to develop initiatives that support economic development through unique partnerships. Wyman earned a bachelor’s in government and foreign affairs and an MBA from Walsh University, and previously served as vice president for U.S. Technology/U.S. Aircraft Corporation, director of public affairs and special projects for Sisters of Charity Health System in Cleveland, and in various capacities at Ursuline College and Walsh University. He serves on the boards of Pathway Caring for Children and Summit Academy. In addition, he was honored as a recipient of ystark!’s first annual “Twenty Under 40!” awards. The Workforce Initiative Association (dba The Employment Source) in Stark and Tuscarawas counties has announced that they will be serving as the administrative and fiscal agent for a $6 million U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) grant that will replicate the agency’s current business retention and expansion model, and ultimately expand to 16 counties in Ohio. The expanded model will connect workforce development, economic development, business and education in a collaborative, seamless and customer-focused partnership structure to deliver more effective and efficient business services in a larger geographic area. Six workforce areas and their respective partners will develop a proactive, concerted employer outreach strategies in their regions. Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties announced the hiring of Carla Frank as chief financial officer. Frank brings more than 25 years of experience in public accounting, working exclusively with non-profit and health care clients. She is a CPA and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public

Accountants and the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants. Before joining Meals On Wheels of Stark & Wayne Counties, she was an assurance services manager with BrunerCox, LLP. She is a graduate of Malone University. Bridgette L. Neisel has been named vice president-donor services and development at Stark Community Foundation. She joins the Foundation team from Walsh University, where she served as vice president of advancement and university relations since 2004.
