103rd ANNUAL DINNER SET FOR FEB. 20 Johnson Controls Chairman and CEO Alex Molinaroli to Speak The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome Johnson Controls Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alex Molinaroli as the guest speaker at the Chamber’s 103rd Annual Dinner on Monday, Feb. 20 at the Canton Memorial Civic Center (1101 Market Ave. N, Canton). Tickets are on sale now at CantonChamber.org. In November 2016, Hall of Fame Village LLC (a partnership between the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Industrial Realty Group) and Johnson Controls, a global diversified technology and multi industrial leader serving customers in more than 150 countries, entered into a historic 18-year agreement to create the first sports and entertainment “smart city” that will carry the name Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village. The $600 million project will

create more than 13,000 new jobs; and over a 25-year period, Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village will generate $15.3 billion in cumulative net new total economic output within Stark County. Molinaroli will provide insight into why Johnson Controls chose to invest in Hall of Fame Village, describe what the first-ever stateof-the-art sports and entertainment “smart city” will entail, and how their investment in the Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village may benefit the local business community and larger region. “The commitment of Johnson Controls to the Hall of Fame Village represents a positive, (continued on next page)

The timing of events in this first quarter of the new year compel us to look over the horizon to midstream, infrastructure which we treat in depth in our June seminar.

At Utica Upstream, Douglas Kris of Eclipse Resources has agreed to return to Canton and update us on his innovative company’s work in the Utica. It was in spring 2016 that Eclipse announced it had drilled a horizontal well with an 18,544-foot lateral in Guernsey County. That’s 3.5 miles sideways. Dan Schweitzer, director of the oil and gas training program at Stark State College, will discuss the renewed demand for oil and gas workers and what Stark State is doing to fill the need. When workers are needed, it can only be good news. Jackie Stewart from Energy in Depth Ohio will present a report on the public tax benefits that have come from Utica energy development and investment. Regarding midstream, we will hear about a Consumers Energy Alliance research study that deals with the economic and energy loss to the nation if pipeline construction is stymied. Though the federal landscape regarding energy may change quickly in favor of development with the new Trump administration, the study’s findings should provoke much thought. Another natural-gas fueled electricity generation plant is planned for the Youngstown area. Clean Energy Future already has one under construction. If all goes well, the Youngstown Vindicator reports, a second plant will be begun in early 2018. This would make eight peaklevel gas generators for Ohio.

In a related note, the wholesale price for electricity declined in 2016, according to the U.S. Energy Information Agency. The sustained low price for abundant natural gas, a power plant fuel, contributed to the price decline. The Bloomberg business news site, among others, has reported that Russia propaganda has tried to create doubt and fear about the safety of U.S. hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas. Russia’s economy is tied closely to its oil and gas business. America’s emergence as a world energy supplier is not good for Russia.

Incoming Chairwoman’s Message: Judith E. Barnes Lancaster It is my privilege and honor to serve as Chairwoman of the Board for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2017. As the Chamber enters its 103rd year of leading the region in business and community development through innovation and collaboration, our organization will serve nearly 2,000 members, making the Chamber the largest business organization in the region and the sixth largest Chamber in Ohio. Our Chamber is even stronger and capable of providing a greater level of service to our business community following the 2016 merger with the Jackson-Belden Chamber of Commerce. I look forward to working with President and CEO Denny Saunier on many exciting programs and initiatives this year, including (but not limited to): establishing a greater regional dialogue with our business community along I-77; working closely with the City of Canton on several major projects including a complete renovation of Market Square; working with our partners at the Pro Football Hall of Fame on a greater connection between downtown with Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village; and increasing

the ways we can better serve our member businesses and all businesses in the region. Of course, it takes a strong board of directors, strong leadership and strong staff to accomplish the Chamber’s broad agenda. I look forward to working with Denny Saunier and his talented staff, the entire board of directors, and volunteers on the many exciting projects and programs underway or on the horizon. ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant Signals Start of 2017 Celebration! The Pro Football Hall of Fame and the annual Enshrinement Festival will be celebrating 54 years of excellence in 2017, with the first event being the Queen Pageant on May 4. Applications and tickets will be available at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Enshrinement Festival department, 222 Market Ave. N., in downtown Canton, weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Monday, Feb. 6. In addition, applications are available online at www.ProFootballHOFEF.com. The deadline to submit the application and a $70 fee is Thursday, March 9, by 5:00 pm. Candidates cannot be younger than a high school senior and 18 years old by May 1 or more than 23 years of age before Sept. 1. Candidates must reside and, if employed, work within a 30mile radius of Stark County. Potential candidates are invited and encouraged to attend the sixth annual “Queen Pageant Informational Session” on Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce from 9:00-11:00 am. This session will help young ladies decide if they would like to enter the Pageant and give them a better idea of what to expect if they do. Participants will have the opportunity to review the 2016 Queen Pageant DVD, learn about the judging experience from past years’ judges, hear from a past queen who will share her memories, and ask questions about the process. BIZ BITZ At its annual meeting, the ArtsinStark board elected Emil Alecusan, CFO of Brewster Cheese, as the chair of its 45-member board. It also brought on these new board members: Barry Adelman, Adrian Allison, Marty Chapman, Duncan Darby, Ron Ponder, Alan Rodriguez, and Kay Sanders. “Our downtowns are using the arts to reinvent themselves and to connect to the exciting dreams of the Hall of Fame Village,” says Alecusan. “Making our downtowns super creative places filled with live music and the arts is key to getting young professionals to live there, and visitors to the Village want to come experience them.” For the past 10 years downtown revitalization has been one of the County Arts Council’s primary strategies, not only in Canton but all across the county. Alecusan also noted that research shows that stronger downtowns contribute to stronger surrounding communities economically. Stark County District Library has been recognized as a Star Library in Library Journal’s latest list of “star libraries.” Library Journal, a national publication, assigns libraries star ratings similar to those used by Michelin and other travel guides. The ratings are based on per capita measures of circulation of library materials, number of visits to the library, library program attendance, e-circulation and library computer use–as reported to state library agencies and compiled nationally by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This year’s index uses that data from 2014. The former Hoover Company’s International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1985, AFL-CIO, will donate its longtime headquarters at 113 South Main Street, North Canton, to Walsh University in an agreement that underscores community engagement and a shared vision to preserve The Hoover Company and IBEW Local 1985 legacy in North Canton. The initiative to donate the building was spearheaded by the President and Business Manager of IBEW Local 1985 Nick J. Tomey and approved by Local 1985s Officers, Executive Board, and all of the remaining Union Members. With the assistance of International Representative Bill Dietz and the recommendation of Fourth District International Vice President Kenneth W. Cooper, International President Lonnie R. Stephenson gave his approval for the donation. The building will be primarily

used for educational purposes, with a focus on extending Walsh University’s Museum Studies program by utilizing the main floor exhibit area for preservation and display of the IBEW Local 1985’s artifacts, and for rotating exhibits as determined by Walsh. Adult Career & Technical Education will be starting a new State Tested Nurse Assistant (STNA) training program in February. This 91-hour program, which includes a 16-hour clinical for real-world experience, provides the skills and knowledge to take the State Nurses Aide Competency and Evaluation Test. The program will be offered monthly. The cost is all-inclusive; including books, supplies, background check, drug screening and the certification test.
