Monthly Oil & Gas Update

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Utica Upstream, our first oil and gas seminar of 2017, on April 5, will be about upstream oil and gas exploration and more.

and consider becoming a sponsor, by following the links at: www.uticacapital. com.

The timing of events in this first quarter of the new year compel us to look over the horizon to midstream, infrastructure which we treat in depth in our June seminar.

AEP Ohio, Beaver Excavating and Furbay Oil & Gas are back as Silver sponsors for our Utica Upstream seminar. We are grateful to these companies for their continued support of our work in oil and gas business development.

At Utica Upstream, Douglas Kris of Eclipse Resources has agreed to return to Canton and update us on his innovative company’s work in the Utica. It was in spring 2016 that Eclipse announced it had drilled a horizontal well with an 18,544-foot lateral in Guernsey County. That’s 3.5 miles sideways. Dan Schweitzer, director of the oil and gas training program at Stark State College, will discuss the renewed demand for oil and gas workers and what Stark State is doing to fill the need. When workers are needed, it can only be good news. Jackie Stewart from Energy in Depth Ohio will present a report on the public tax benefits that have come from Utica energy development and investment. Regarding midstream, we will hear about a Consumers Energy Alliance research study that deals with the economic and energy loss to the nation if pipeline construction is stymied. Though the federal landscape regarding energy may change quickly in favor of development with the new Trump administration, the study’s findings should provoke much thought. We have invitations out to other speakers who will enrich the program. Home for our seminars this year will be Walsh University. You can register today,

In oil and gas news that caught our eye:

Vice Chairman - Amanda Sterling TimkenSteel

Another natural-gas fueled electricity generation plant is planned for the Youngstown area. Clean Energy Future already has one under construction. If all goes well, the Youngstown Vindicator reports, a second plant will be begun in early 2018. This would make eight peaklevel gas generators for Ohio.

Treasurer - D. William Allen Pro Football Hall of Fame Immediate Past Chairman - Brian S. Belden The Belden Brick Company President & CEO - Dennis P. Saunier Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce COO - Steven M. Meeks Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce

In a related note, the wholesale price for electricity declined in 2016, according to the U.S. Energy Information Agency. The sustained low price for abundant natural gas, a power plant fuel, contributed to the price decline. The Bloomberg business news site, among others, has reported that Russia propaganda has tried to create doubt and fear about the safety of U.S. hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas. Russia’s economy is tied closely to its oil and gas business. America’s emergence as a world energy supplier is not good for Russia.

Incoming Chairwoman’s Message: Judith E. Barnes Lancaster It is my privilege and honor to serve as Chairwoman of the Board for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2017. As the Chamber enters its 103rd year of leading the region in business and community development through innovation and collaboration, our organization will serve nearly 2,000 members, making the Chamber the largest business organization in the region and the sixth largest Chamber in Ohio. Our Chamber is even stronger and capable of providing a greater level of service to our business community following the 2016 merger with the Jackson-Belden Chamber of Commerce. I look forward to working with President and CEO Denny Saunier on many exciting programs and initiatives this year, including (but not limited to): establishing a greater regional dialogue with our business community along I-77; working closely with the City of Canton on several major projects including a complete renovation of Market Square; working with our partners at the Pro Football Hall of Fame on a greater connection between downtown with Johnson Controls Hall of Fame Village; and increasing

the ways we can better serve our member businesses and all businesses in the region. Of course, it takes a strong board of directors, strong leadership and strong staff to accomplish the Chamber’s broad agenda. I look forward to working with Denny Saunier and his talented staff, the entire board of directors, and volunteers on the many exciting projects and programs underway or on the horizon. Through the work of the Chamber and its five departments, we are ready to serve our area’s businesses, young professionals, emerging leaders, safety-minded professionals, downtown community, and community at large. BIZ BITZ At its annual meeting, the ArtsinStark board elected Emil Alecusan, CFO of Brewster Cheese, as the chair of its 45-member board. It also brought on these new board members: Barry Adelman, Adrian Allison, Marty Chapman, Duncan Darby, Ron Ponder, Alan Rodriguez, and Kay Sanders. “Our downtowns are using the arts to reinvent themselves and to connect to the exciting dreams of the Hall of Fame Village,” says Alecusan. “Making our downtowns super creative places filled with live music and the arts is key to getting young professionals to live there, and visitors to the Village want to come experience them.” For the past 10 years downtown revitalization has been one of the County Arts Council’s primary strategies, not only in Canton but all across the county. Alecusan also noted that research shows that stronger downtowns contribute to stronger surrounding communities economically. Stark County District Library has been recognized as a Star Library in Library Journal’s latest list of “star libraries.” Library Journal, a national publication, assigns libraries star ratings similar to those used by Michelin and other travel guides. The ratings are based on per capita measures of circulation of library materials, number of visits to the library, library program attendance, e-circulation and library computer use–as reported to state library agencies and compiled nationally by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This year’s index uses that data from 2014. The former Hoover Company’s International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1985, AFL-CIO, will donate its longtime headquarters at 113 South Main Street, North Canton, to Walsh University in an agreement that underscores community engagement and a shared vision to preserve The Hoover Company and IBEW Local 1985 legacy in North Canton. The initiative to donate the building was spearheaded by the President and Business Manager of IBEW Local 1985 Nick J. Tomey and approved by Local 1985s Officers, Executive Board, and all of the remaining Union Members. With the assistance of International Representative Bill Dietz and the recommendation of Fourth District International Vice President Kenneth W. Cooper, International President Lonnie R. Stephenson gave his approval for the donation. The building will be primarily

used for educational purposes, with a focus on extending Walsh University’s Museum Studies program by utilizing the main floor exhibit area for preservation and display of the IBEW Local 1985’s artifacts, and for rotating exhibits as determined by Walsh. Adult Career & Technical Education will be starting a new State Tested Nurse Assistant (STNA) training program in February. This 91-hour program, which includes a 16-hour clinical for real-world experience, provides the skills and knowledge to take the State Nurses Aide Competency and Evaluation Test. The program will be offered monthly. The cost is all-inclusive; including books, supplies, background check, drug screening and the certification test. For more details and to register, please call our main office at 330438-2556, ext. 101. Thomas W. Schmidt, director of business development & community relations for Progressive Auto Group, recently received a proclamation from U.S. Congressman Bob Gibbs recognizing him as the 2016 Stark County Volunteer of the Year. Tom has an extensive history of community service; he has served on the boards of directors for both the Canton Regional and former Jackson-Belden Chambers of Commerce, including Jackson-Belden board president in 2014. He is also the founder of the Progress4TheCure Breast Cancer fundraiser, held each October at Progressive Auto Group. He has been recognized with Canton Regional Chamber Community Salute Awards in 2006 and 2016 and was the 2011 Jackson-Belden Chamber member of the year. Additionally, Progressive Auto Group’s 2nd Annual Progress4TheCure event, held on October 5, 2016, successfully raised money and awareness for breast cancer in our community. Both Aultman Hospital and Mercy Medical Center were awarded checks in the amount of $5,071 for their breast cancer centers. Over 500 guests attended and 60 organizations had booths at the event. Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) invites the community to participate in a TSA Pre3® expedited screening program held February 6-10 at the airport. The program allows low-risk air travelers to use TSA Pre3®✓lanes not only at CAK, but also at airports throughout the U.S. The program expedites the screening process

for members by eliminating the need to remove shoes, 3-1-1 liquids, laptops, light outerwear or belts before passing through. Applicants can pre-enroll ahead of time by simply visiting identogo.com/precheck. With pre-enrollment, applicants can speed up the application process and choose the appointment date and time that fits their schedule. TSA Pre3® has an enrollment fee of $85 which guarantees a five year membership. The event will be held in the second floor conference room at the airport. Akron-Canton Airport is located at 5400 Lauby Road NW, North Canton, OH 44720. Russell E Phillips, Jr. CPA, CVA, MAFF and Managing Partner of The Phillips Organization has successfully completed the rigorous certification process with the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts (NACVA) to earn the Master Analyst in Financial Forensics (MAFF) credential. The MAFF credential is designed to provide assurance to the business and legal communities that the designee possess a level of experience and knowledge deemed acceptable by the Association to provide competent and professional financial forensic consulting services and has met the Association’s rigorous standards of professionalism, expertise, objectivity, and integrity in the financial forensic consulting disciplines. Area Wide Protective, a leading provider of traffic control services, has unveiled its new brand to customers and employees. The company recently underwent a brand refresh to bring clarity to its service offerings. “AWP is nationally recognized as an industry leader,” said John Sypek, AWP President and Chief Executive Officer. “We felt it was important to distinguish ourselves accordingly, and to more clearly articulate what it is that we provide our customers.” AWP’s new logo uses a shield as its icon and the tagline, Protect Your People, Protect Your Business, Protect Your Time.
