Ron Becker concludes term as Chamber board chairman, thanks membership As I begin to reflect on 2009 and conclude my role as chairman of the board for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, it is important to pause and be mindful of all the good things that have happened in an otherwise challenging year. It became very obvious to me early on that Ron Becker the core strength of the Chamber lies in its membership. The true importance of the membership to the Chamber goes beyond the economic need for membership dues. Many of the members support the Chamber and its mission through additional sponsorships for the more than 70 events organized by the Chamber and its partners, through in-kind donations, and by being good stewards of the

Since 1914, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has been dedicated to advancing business and developing community to ensure that our area thrives as both a great place to do business and an exceptional place to live. 2009 was no different. In 2009, the Chamber’s initiatives continued their momentum in many areas. The Mills Business Park signed its first purchase agreement. As of this writing, the due diligence period continues and we look forward to welcoming the park's first tenant in 2010. Together with the DeHoff Family Foundation, the Chamber will elevate its efforts in 2010 to seek additional businesses for the park. Furthermore, in conjunction (continued on next page)

Thomas Cecconi elected Canton Chamber board chairman; six new board directors named Thomas E. Cecconi, president & CEO, Mercy Medical Center, has been elected chairman and George W. Lemon has been elected senior vice chairman of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce board of directors for 2010. Newly elected members of the board are: Timothy M. Burke, president & CEO of the Central region, FirstMerit Bank N.A., Philip D. Fracassa, senior vice president – tax and treasury, The Timken Company, Mark J. Samolczyk, president, Stark Community Foundation, William C. Shivers, president of the greater Akron/Canton region, Huntington National Bank, Dr. Gary W. Streit, president, Malone University and ex-officio member Derek Gordon, president of the Canton Jaycees. Thomas E. Cecconi serves as president and CEO of Mercy Medical Center. Prior to serving at Mercy, he was president & CEO of Doctors Hospital of Stark County from 1991 to 2002. He is a graduate of John Carroll University and received an MBA from Baldwin Wallace College. with the City of Canton, Stark Development Board, and local developers, the Chamber will continue to address the needs of the existing businesses in our community and other potential businesses that are considering locating here. The School Funding Task Force that was formed in 2007 completed its original mission this year. Task Force members approved the final report and authorized the submission of this report to the Chamber’s Education Committee, and your Chamber Board of Directors approved the report. The Education Committee continues to meet in an effort to achieve their goals – to advance business development through education, to make an impact on the statewide debate over public school funding and education reform, and to develop and execute a communications plan for Stark County education and economic development. The objective of the committee is to help the entire community appreciate the link between education and economic development, something that our 2010 Annual Dinner speaker, Dr. Willard Daggett, will surely help bring to light. The 21st Century Government Steering Committee completed its original mission and has successfully transitioned the effort of government collaboration and reform to the Stark Development Board for its sustained process. In 2009, the Chamber and its business partners again hosted four terrific annual downtown events, which included Zing in the City, the Canton Blues Festival, Vintage Canton, and Light Up Downtown. We also added to the downtown festival tradition this year with Taste of Canton, a wildly successful festival featuring local restaurants and food vendors. And for the first time, the IFAF Junior World Football Championships were hosted in the United States right here in Canton, and were organized by a collaboration through the Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with significant volunteer support from the young professional network at ystark!. The professional and dedicated staffs of these entities deserve to be recognized for their tireless efforts in staging first class events despite any challenges they may have faced.

As always, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival staff and the Pro Football Hall of Fame produced a “One of a Kind Celebration!” to celebrate the players, coaches, and owners who have represented the game of Pro Football in their respective ways. It is no surprise that more than 4,000 people from our community came together again to help stage this internationally recognized event, demonstrating the solid foundation of volunteerism that our community enjoys. Despite the economic challenges that the Chamber and its business members faced in 2009, the year has concluded on a optimistic note and we are positioned well for 2010. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as the 2009 chairman of the board for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, and to be involved with the very strong and talented executive management team led by President and CEO Dennis P. Saunier. The dedication and commitment of this very professional and experienced staff continues to provide a solid foundation from which we can build and operate. The Chamber does not subscribe to the “survival of the fittest” philosophy. Very simply put, they will continue to create an organization for the future that is managed and structured to facilitate the success of its members in the ever changing economic culture world and business climate. Cecconi is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives and received the CEO Award of Excellence from the College of Osteopathic Healthcare Professionals in 1996. He is a member of the Walsh University Board of Directors and the Chairman of the Akron Regional Hospitals Association. He is also a member of the Stark County Development Board and past member of the Massillon Chamber Board of Trustees. George W. Lemon is a wellknown community leader, with a reputation for getting involved, getting things done and bringing people together for positive change. George Lemon This aspect of George’s character is reflected in his active leadership and involvement with major community institutions and organizations, including Stark State College, Canton Museum of Art, United Way, Goodwill Industries, Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Aultman Health Foundation and the Greater Stark County Urban League. In 1997, Mr. Lemon founded and served as president of Technical Products Group, Inc., a company that provides sales and marketing support to manufacturing companies that produce motors, blowers and related technical products. Prior to that, he spent 25 years with AMETEK, a Fortune 500 company, where he held a variety of positions, including vice president of marketing and sales for the Technical Motor Division. He was an early graduate of Stark State College, earning his degree in electrical engineering, as well as graduating from Malone University’s Management Program.

Timothy M. Burke was named president and CEO of the Central Region, including Stark, Wayne, Holmes, Tuscarawas, Richland, Ashland and Medina Counties Tim Burke as well as Western Pennsylvania, for FirstMerit in May 2009. Prior to joining FirstMerit, he was managing director and senior vice president for National City Corporation in Southeast Florida. His background includes work in corporate banking, credit administration and asset based lending. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from John Carroll University and an MBA from Case Western Reserve University. Burke is active in the community and serves on the board of directors for the Stark Development Board and the executive committee of the Medina County Economic Development Corporation. Philip D. Fracassa is senior vice president – tax and treasury at The Timken Company. He also is an officer of the company. Fracassa leads the company’s Philip Fracassa global treasury and tax activities, including cash and liquidity management, pension funding, corporate insurance, and tax compliance, planning and strategy. Since being named to his current position in 2006, he has integrated the tax and treasury functions to more effectively support the company’s leadership and growth in key markets around the world. Fracassa joined the company as vice president – tax in 2005. Prior to joining Timken, he was senior tax counsel and director of taxes for Visteon Corporation. Fracassa is a member of Financial Executives International, the Tax Executives Institute, the International Fiscal Association, and the Manufacturers’ Alliance Treasury and (continued on page 21)

Succession Planning for SMALL BUSINESSES

Closely held businesses are the backbone of the American economy. Despite the attention paid to the stock market, the 8,500 public companies traded there provide only 24 percent of private sector employment; by contrast, 4.6 million closely held companies provide 76 percent of employment in the private sector. Practically all the job generation in the country is in the closely held sector. What is the most cost effective means of retaining these businesses and the jobs they provide in our communities? The consequence of the absence of succession planning is that too frequently businesses are sold to competitors, who may consolidate operations, reducing local employment, or may simply shut the doors and liquidate. Renowned education reformer to enlighten at ANNUAL DINNER By David Ka m in ski, dire cto r of bu s in ess d evelo pm en t a nd s t r ateg ic p ro j e c t s What does the name Willard Daggett mean to the education community in Stark County? The business community will soon find out. Dr. Willard Daggett Dr. Willard Daggett of the International Center for Leadership in Education will bring his campaign for school reform to Stark County on Feb. 11 when he addresses the Annual Dinner of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce at the Canton Memorial Civic Center. Daggett has been influencing education reform in Stark County for several years. His message lends itself equally well to a business audience. He is a student of emerging world economies and of rapid advancements in technology. He views these economic developments as an American who is anxious to ensure that the United States maintains its strong economic position in the world. And education is a fundamental tool in maintaining that position. What is Daggett’s message, one that is having such an effect on Stark County’s schools? His Application Model and Rigor/Relevance Framework has provided a practical planning and instructional

tool for determining the relevance of curriculum and assessment to real-world situations. He helps listeners look at education differently by challenging their assumptions about the purposes, benefits and effectiveness of American schools. Daggett inspires audiences to both embrace what is best about our education system and make the changes necessary to meet the needs of all students in the 21st Century. “Inviting Dr. Daggett to speak is an exciting departure from many past Annual Dinner programs that featured political pundits from newspapers and television,” said Dennis P. Gumpp appointed to new role with Enshrinement Festival Chris Gumpp has assumed a new role as sponsorship manager at the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of the Canton Regional Chamber. Gumpp Chris Gumpp replaces Eric Belden who recently accepted a position as executive director of Pathway Caring for Children. Gumpp joined the Enshrinement Festival staff as marketing and event manager in October 2004 after 29 years as a sales and public relations professional at John Gasser & Son Jewelers. She also had extensive Enshrinement Festival volunteer leadership experience as chairman of the former Mayor’s Breakfast, Souvenirs & Decorations, Special Events, Queen Pageant and Celebrities committees. As marketing and event manager for the past five years, she has been responsible for working with her team of volunteers to successfully plan and stage the Balloon Classic Invitational, Ribs Burnoff, and Timken Grand Parade, as well as serving as staff liaison to the Chamber’s Marketing Department in the areas of marketing, advertising, media and graphics.

Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival named one of North America’s 100 BEST EVENTS for 2010

The American Bus Association (ABA) announced that the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival, to be held July 30 – August 8, has been designated as one of the Top 100 Events in North America for 2010 by an elite tourism industry selection committee. Inclusion in the Top 100 list, published as a supplement to Destinations Magazine, indicates that the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival offers excellent entertainment value to both tour groups and individual travelers from around the world, said ABA. With the release of the American Bus Association’s 2010 Top 100 Events in North America, ABA celebrates 28 years of the Top 100 Events. What began as a way for motorcoach operators to incorporate new product into their itineraries has grown to one of the most soughtafter lists by travel professionals, motorcoach operators and the general public. “The attractiveness of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival as a don’t-miss entertainment value is only part of why its selection this year is such a distinction for Canton, Ohio,” said Peter J. 33 young professionals enjoy the SPOTLIGHT Leadership Stark County’s Spotlight Stark County program for young professionals concluded another successful course in 2009 with a ceremony and reception in the Wilkof Courtyard of the Canton Museum of Art in December. Convening for six comprehensive sessions, the 33-member class relished a variety of experiences geared to leadership skill building and community awareness: • A study of the StrengthsFinder book (Buckingham and Clifton) and online assessment and Speed Networking focused on professional skills. • Historical perspectives and interaction with forward-thinking business people along with an overview of the arts scene added community context. • A session at the Community Campus at Goodwill introduced the group to many of the organizations that are collaborat-

ing to meet the human services’ needs of Stark County residents. • Participation in a short-term volunteer activity personalized the message. Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau among those sworn in by Governor John Kiste, executive director of the Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau, was among the four officers of the Ohio Association of Convention and Visitors’ Bureaus (OACVB) to be sworn in to the executive committee by Ohio Governor Ted Strickland in Cambridge on Thursday. The OACVB works tirelessly to help individual tourism groups bring more visitors and events within Ohio’s borders. One of the organization’s primary goals has been to keep funding at the Ohio Division of Travel and Tourism, and the Division’s executive director, Amir Eylon, accompanied Governor Strickland to Thursday’s meeting, where both spoke about the present state of tourism in Ohio and their plans for its future. “It was an honor to be sworn in by Governor Strickland,” noted Kiste.“I believe he understands our commitment to tourism, and I am confident his administration will make every effort to see that the Division is funded as we meet myriad future challenges.”

SAFETY COUNCIL teams up with Local Emergency Planning Committee for important safety session The Stark County Safety Council and Stark County Local Emergency Planning Committee will present an informational session on the importance of safety in the workplace on Thursday, Jan. 21. ystark! seeking top students for second year Fellowship Program ystark!, Stark County’s young professional organization. Participating companies include: Koch Knight, Rodriguez's House of Stones and Time Warner Cable.

The ystark! Fellowship Program is a unique opportunity for undergraduate students who are searching for their first position post-graduation. The Fellowship will offer a true immersion experience – a full-time, salaried, high-exposure work opportunity that offers the benefits of professional development, community service involvement and networking opportunities. The Fellows will begin their program in June of 2010, and ystark! is currently accepting applications from undergraduate students who will graduate in the Fall 2009 or Spring 2010 academic year. Applicants must be graduates of Kent State University Stark Campus, Malone University, Mount Union College, Stark State College or Walsh University, or they must be a Stark County high school graduate who will graduate from any college or university accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. NEW in 2010! Young Entrepreneur Snapshot Why have you chosen Canton as your home base? I’ve lived in Stark County most of my life, so setting up shop here just seemed like the natural thing to do. I owe a lot to this area; the businesses here have been incredibly supportive of us and are still our “bread and butter.” I appreciate their willingness to keep as many dollars local as possible. The education community has also been extremely helpful to us with regard to developing talent. How have the amenities of Stark County contributed to your success? I’m a big believer in all this area has to offer, and I’ve relied on many talented and innovative people in this region time and time again, whether we’re talking employees, business partners or friends. But more than that, this community has a lot of “heart,” and as a husband and father of five (and one on the way!) that’s important to me. Name: Geoff Karcher Age: 35 Company Name: The Karcher Group How did you come up with the idea for your business/product/service? By 1997, I had already spent a few years working for web-based businesses and saw a need for websites that not only looked great, but also had superior functionality. I also felt there was a lack of longstanding, stable companies that could offer a high level of professionalism. The industry was largely made up of young kids earning a buck through college, or larger companies not focused on the web but “testing the waters” to see if there was money to be made. I thought that if I could bring truly great customer service, great design, and professional programming to the table, I would have something really unique.

Why is having a strong YP community important for your business? Being in the web development business, we naturally attract a younger workforce. Finding and keeping good talent in this region has been an ongoing challenge for us along with many other businesses. A strong YP community helps keep the people we need engaged in this area, and hopefully attracts new talent as well.

and what we need to do to reach out to young professionals. Their events are always first-class, but I also love that they don’t take themselves too seriously. I mean, how could you with a dodgeball league and a trophy inscribed,“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball”? ystark! is definitely an asset to Stark County. What advice would you give to YPs who share your entrepreneurial streak but are just getting started? If you have a good idea and aren’t afraid of hard work and some bumpy moments along the way, move now. A down economy is in some ways the best time to start a business. There is good talent on the market and nothing but opportunity. I started in my parents’ basement, working with my sister Dana. It wasn’t glamorous or easy, but 12 years later we’re a team of about 40 people, 500 clients strong and have a lot to be thankful for. What’s next for you? It’s an exciting time to be in the web business. Believe it or not, there’s a digital tsunami coming in the next couple years, and it’s up to us to guide our clients through the storm. The convergence of web, search, social media, video, even print; it’s on its way and it’s going to affect every business.

What are your thoughts on ystark!? I’ve met a ton of great people and made a lot of good friends through ystark! This group really gets the needs of the region

Mark J. Samolczyk is the president of Stark Community Foundation. Prior to joining the Foundation, Samolczyk was senior vice president – corporate planning and Mark Samolczyk development for The Timken Company, from which he retired in May 2009. While at The Timken Company, Samolczyk’s career encompassed a progression of management assignments in materials management, sales and marketing, strategic management and operations management in the United States, France, Mexico and Canada. He was named an officer of the company in 2000. In addition to Shivers’ previous commercial banking role at KeyBank, his diverse background encompasses serving as a state examiner for the State Auditors Office; director of sales and marketing as well as vice president of operations for Quaker Manufacturing Corp. Shivers is a graduate of Hiram College and he received his MBA from Franciscan University. He is a graduate of Leadership Mahoning Valley and is active in the community. Described as a high energy,“outside-the-box” thinker, Dr. Gary Streit assumed the office of president of Malone University in July 2007. Since that time the University has Dr. Gary Streit posted record enrollments, expanded its campus acreage and academic offerings, built a new residence hall, and made the transition from Malone College to Malone University. Prior to this position, Dr. Streit served for many years at Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois. He earned the A.B. degree in English from Trevecca Nazarene University (Tenn.), the M.S. degree in education-psychology from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and the Ph.D. in English education from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Streit has consulted with US colleges and universities in his role as consultant/evaluator and team chair with the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. He has also worked in developing and providing oversight to several of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities’ Best Semester Programs. Internationally, Streit has been involved in educational con-

sulting in the Dominican Republic, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Egypt, Hong Kong, as well as in the SubSaharan African countries of Kenya, Mozambique, Swaziland, and South Africa. Derek Gordon is a lifelong Canton resident and will serve as the 2010 president of the Canton Jaycees. A graduate of McKinley Senior High School and Mount Union College, he Derek Gordon remains involved in the community as an assistant coach for the McKinley Boy’s Golf Team and McKinley Summer Baseball Team. He is a member of the Canton City School’s Public Relations Committee and recently received the 2009 Canton Professional Educator’s Association Layperson of the Year award for his service to the school district. Gordon served as the chairman of the 2009 Oktoberfest in downtown Canton and was a 2008 graduate of Leadership Stark County’s Spotlight Stark County program. He also serves as the United Way Campaign coordinator for City of Canton government employees, and is the administrative coordinator for the Mayor’s Scholarship Program. He looks forward to serving as a member of the board as he focuses on strengthening the Jaycee’s presence and impact within the City of Canton.
