The Downtown Canton Special Improvement District and ystark! (both departments of the Canton Regional Chamber) are teaming up with the Canton Palace Theatre to debut a brand new (and FREE!) downtown Canton event – the Cinema in the City movie series!

This exciting new outdoor movie series – setup with a jumbo screen on the Kresge Green Space between Third & Fourth Streets along Market Ave. – is happening in July, August and September with silver screen favorites including:

The third annual Taste of Canton - a food festival held in the heart of downtown Canton on May 26 – left no empty bellies, but plenty of attendees are already hungry for next year’s event! Almost 30 restaurants served up delicious dishes all day.

An estimated crowd of 15,000 enjoyed the two-day Canton Blues Fest this summer – featuring headliners Michael Burks and Ronnie Baker Brooks – along with music all-day each day from an incredible lineup of local, regional and national talent. (continued on page two)

Young Entrepreneur Snapshot Being in the entertainment sector, this is essential for my business. Furthermore, a strong young professional community is important to my business because we are geared towards young families. We offer a place they can come and have fun with their kids.

Since I have a large facility, I am always looking to partner with the business community to host events. I can also offer other young professionals looking to start or expand their family entertainment/recreation business, such as karate classes or gymnastics, the space they need to succeed.

Name: Mark Curry Age: 35 Company Name: Adventure Landings (www.adventure-landings.com) How did you come up with the idea for your business/product/service?

Growing up playing sports and always enjoying family activities gave me the dream of one day owning a family-oriented sports and recreation business.

For a number of years now, I have been looking for an opportunity to open up a family entertainment center. I wanted this center to have sporting and other fun activities that families could do together. When the Northeast Community Center came up for auction, it provided just the facility I was looking for.

Which attributes best define you as an entrepreneur?

I believe my determination and flexibility best define me as an entrepreneur. I am willing to work very hard to reach the goals I have set for myself. I also possess an openness to adapt to an ever changing environment, which is an essential element in making a business successful.

Why have you chosen Canton as your home base?

I became familiar with the Canton area when I attended Malone University and believe Canton has a lot to offer a new business. It has everything from popular attractions like the Pro Football Hall of Fame to shopping areas, places to eat and even quaint little shops. One thing I thought it needed though, especially in the east end of town, was a nice place for families to come and enjoy the day together. I am excited to have the opportunity to open this kind of business in Canton.

How have the amenities of Stark County contributed to your success?

First, I would not be where I am today without the education I received from one of Canton’s premier institutions, Malone University. Secondly, I have had the privilege to talk with a number of leaders in the county’s business community about my ideas, gaining insight and ideas from their many experiences.

They have shared many stories of the rich history of this area. Finally, I believe I was blessed to have purchased one of Stark County’s landmarks, the Northeast Community Center. I cannot count the number of people who have told me they learned to swim at the center. I look forward to helping their children and grandchildren to say the same thing.

Why is having a strong YP community important for your business?

The business community is the life blood of an area. A strong business environment means more people with jobs and more disposable income.

What are your thoughts on ystark!?

Young entrepreneurs are the future of an area and ystark! offers a venue to cultivate and develop new ideas. It offers a variety of events, including sporting events like dodgeball and professional networking events like CEO Meet & Eat luncheons. It is a wonderful organization, one that offers a chance to meet and network with other professionals in the area. Since I just opened up this year, I have not had a chance to take full advantage of the organization yet, but my wife, Marcie Curry, who works at Hill, Barth & King, has been involved and has told me how much she enjoys the ystark! events she attends and friendly people she meets. I am looking forward to getting more involved with the organization.

What advice would you give to YPs who share your entrepreneurial streak but are just getting started?

Follow your heart. Take a risk, but don’t be closed-minded. Find a mentor who has been through it before, ask for ideas and never stop listening and learning.

What’s next for you?

Since we only have been open to the public for three months, we are still getting our feet wet. This summer we are opening the swimming pool and cafe six days a week. We continue to offer inflatables, the rock climbing wall and water walking ball for our Family Fun Saturdays and for birthday parties together with room, gym and pool rentals. We are also planning to host various events, including a Pro Wrestling event. We will continue to pursue opportunities to add programming, events and attractions as we grow.

Taking a “staycation” has never made more sense (and cents!) thanks to the incredible events planned for the 48th annual celebration of football heroes.

Celebrate the newest Class of Enshrinees with the whole family at these 18 unique and diverse events during the Enshrinement Festival, held July 28 through Aug. 9 – and all celebrating the 2011 Class of Enshrinees: Richard Dent, Marshall Faulk, Chris Hanburger, Les Richter, Ed Sabol, Deion Sanders, and Shannon Sharpe.

Canton is widely revered as the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which means that it is also home to a One of a Kind Celebration – the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival! Since 1963, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce have joined together to host the annual Enshrinement Festival, celebrating the induction of football players, coaches and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Queen Pageant Thursday, May 5, 7 p.m.

Canton Palace Theatre Fifty-six young women from Stark County and surrounding communities competed for the title of Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen. Erin Shipbaugh of Rochester was crowned Queen and the seven Court members are Brooke Catazara and Haley Smith of Massillon, Kee’Auna Cherry, Lauren Cheviron, Ebonie Parks, and

Shanice Robinson of Canton, and Cecelia Ramsey of North Canton. They will help to welcome the current Class of Enshrinees to Canton for the festivities, but more importantly, they are serving as goodwill ambassadors and role models for youngsters in the community while volunteering their time for a wide variety of civic organizations.

Concert and Fireworks Thursday, July 28, 6 p.m.

Downtown Canton There is no better way to kick off nearly two weeks of festivities than with a giant fireworks extravaganza! Join us in downtown Canton in the Cornerstone Square area at Walnut and Tuscarawas for family fun that will include music by True Blue Band and Malone University Singers on the Fishers Foods Stage, kids’ activities and crafts, and delectable treats for all from a variety of food vendors. Then sit back and enjoy an extraordinary fireworks display by Zambelli—“the First Family of Fireworks!”—choreographed to music and best described as phenomenal!

2-Mile and 5-Mile Races Sunday, July 31, 8 a.m.

Pro Football Hall of Fame Nearly 1,900 people are expected to walk or run in the 2-Mile Race, 5-Mile Competitive Walk, 5-Mile Race and Kids Fun Run. Cash and/or other prizes will be awarded to top finishers in the 2-Mile and 5-Mile events, and both serious and recreational runners are welcome to participate. In the second annual Competitive Walking Division in the 5-Mile Race, prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers; the walkers in this division must be able to maintain an 18-minute pace. Starting the morning’s activities will be the seventh annual free, 400 meter, Kids Fun Run for youngsters six and under, where everyone is a winner! All races finish at the steps of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, offering great photo opportunities and the chance to visit the museum. Family-friendly entertainment includes a master sand sculptor, face painting, caricaturists, balloon twisters, Fantasy Football Zone of interactive inflatables, and free musical entertainment all day on the daytime stage. Downtown Canton Nearly 2,000 enthusiastic youngsters line a two-mile route to pass an official NFL football from the site in downtown Canton which was the birthplace of the NFL in 1920 to the front steps of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Emphasizing the importance of physical fitness starting at an early age, it’s also a great ceremonial kickoff to a special weekend of football.

Chamber and Hall Announce Key Chairs

PUBLIC SAFETY & SERVICE • GAME • CORPORATE HOST The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Pro Football Hall of Fame have named the following key committee chairs: Thomas Ream, Public Safety and Service; Mark Prosise, Game; and Mike Lancaster, Corporate Host.

Ream serves as the City of Canton’s public service and safety representative to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Committee.

He serves on the Thomas Ream Mayor’s administrative team as director of public safety, overseeing the police, fire and building departments. He joined the Healy administration in August 2009 after 32 years of service with the Canton Police Department, retiring as the Deputy Chief of Police. A graduate of the Southern Police Institute and the FBI National Academy, he is a member of the FBI National Academy Associates, International Association of Chiefs of Police, and FOP McKinley Lodge #2.

He has extensive Enshrinement Festival experience through his duties from 1994 through 2001 as Canton Police Department Hall of Fame events commander. He and wife Marcy are the parents of two sons.

The Chamber and Pro Football Hall of Fame committees of the Enshrinement Festival work closely with the City of Canton to assure the safety and comfort of citizens and visitors who attend the annual festivities. The level of cooperation from the City has been extraordinary over the past 48 years, and the Chamber and Hall are grateful to the city’s elected officials, department heads and employees who provide so much support each year.

Prosise is owner of A Child’s Place Nursery School, and a graduate of Jackson High School, Bowling Green State University and Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He has served on the Game committee since C a n t o n

1999, and this is his first year as chairman. An active Hall of Fame volunteer for the past 18 years, he has also served on the Autograph and Enshrinement committees.

Mark Prosise Prosise is a board member and past-president of the Jackson Township Community Improvement Corporation. He and wife Sandra have two sons, Eric and Ryan.

Under the direction of Prosise and his vice chairman Doug Hampton, the Game Committee is responsible for the timing and coordination of the pre-game and halftime activities during the NFL/Hall of Fame Game, scheduled to be held at Fawcett Stadium at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7, featuring the Chicago Bears vs. St. Louis Rams, and broadcast on “NBC Sunday Night NFL Football.”

Lancaster is a graduate of Sandy Valley High School and Capital University. He has been an active Enshrinement Festival volunteer since 1976, serving as a ball-boy for the Hall of Mike Lancaster Fame Game as a youngster, and previously serving as chairman of the NFL Experience Committee. He supports other community activities as a member of the Stark County Board of Health and Walsh University Planned Giving Committee, is a member of the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, and a graduate of Leadership Stark County. He and wife Susan are the proud parents of one son and one daughter.

This year, he chairs the newly-formed Corporate Host Committee, which will provide increased hospitality services and support to corporate sponsors and their guests during the Enshrinement Festival events. His son Brandon Lancaster, committee vice chairman, will assist him.

Has our safety gone to the dogs?

JULY SAFETY COUNCIL LUNCHEON At the Stark County Safety Council Luncheon on July 14, you’ll hear from Officer Ryan Davis, a member of Canton’s Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and K-9 Police Dog handler. He’ll explain how the DEA works to eradicate drugs and drug-related crimes in our community.

Davis will also cover how the DEA utilizes the K-9 units, including a demonstration of drug location by K-9 trainer Eric Stanbro. He’ll also cover basic Meth lab awareness.

Davis joined the Canton Police Department in 1996 and has been a patrolman with the department since that time. He was a member of the SWAT

Team from 1997 to 1998, participating in drug raids, barricaded subjects and hostage situations. He has also worked in the VICE/SIU unit, working in undercover investigations for drugs, prostitution and fugitive searches. He was selected as a K-9 Police Dog handler in 2008.

He is also currently assigned to the DEA Cleveland Resident Office Drug Task Force, handling narcotics investigations, parcel interdiction, and assists other local, state and federal agencies in any capacity possible with the K-9 units.

SoL Harris/Day Architecture has broken ground on their new ‘green’ office, near the intersection of Portage St. and Frank Avenue, which is scheduled to open this fall. This new office offers an example of different ‘green’ strategies that can be used to help the environment by decreasing energy usage and the overall impact on the surrounding environment. It has been developed with a goal of LEED Gold Certification.

Many ‘green’ strategies are being utilized, including salvaging and recycling the existing barn and house; design of a super insulated building including ICF foam block foundation to decrease energy use; a partial white roof to reflect sunlight; a partial green planted roof and specific landscaping to reduce flooding; natural light on east and south wall to lower artificial lighting and decrease electric usage; and low flow plumbing fixtures to decrease water usage. The theme represents the services Crossroads provides to their patients by taking care of their needs wherever they reside.
