A mouth-watering time had by all at May’s TASTE OF CANTON The fourth annual Fishers Foods Taste of Canton, presented by Schulman Zimmerman & Associates—a food festival held in the heart of downtown Canton on May 23 AND 24—left no empty bellies, but plenty of attendees are already hungry for next year’s event! YSTARK! Eric Smer named new ystark! director ystark!, Stark County’s young professional initiative and a department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, has announced that Eric Smer has joined the staff as the new ystark! director.
along with expanding ystark!’s role in entrepreneurial engagement and economic development.

Smer joins ystark! from the Stark County Hunger Task Force, where he served as special projects coordinator, program director and ultimately executive director for the organization. Smer is an honors program graduate of Kent State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in marketing and business management. He also obtained a Certificate in Supervisory Leadership from The University of Akron.
Smer has received many awards in his career to date, including recognition at ystark!’s own fifth annual ‘Twenty under 40!’ awards, presented June 5 at Glenmoor Country Club.
Smer will lead the organization in its mission of attracting, retaining and most importantly, engaging Stark County young professionals. His work for ystark! will include managing networking and social events, professional development efforts, service and volunteer opportunities,
In addition to his involvement with the Stark County Hunger Task Force and ystark!, including participation on the education and service committees, Smer is an active volunteer with organizations throughout the county. Why have you chosen to live in Canton? I don’t currently live in Canton. I’m still living in Magnolia for the time being. I hope to relocate within the year once I have some money saved up!

What do you like MOST about Canton? The people and all the amazing history!
Age: 23 Occupation/Title/Place of work: Docent at the National First Ladies’ Historic Site and National First Ladies’ Library Why are you interested Canton’s Young Professionals initiative? I think it’s wonderful that there’s an institution in place that is encouraging and inviting to the younger generation of professionals. There is so much potential here in Canton from this age group and I love that ystark is striving to encourage and grow that.
What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area? From the small amount of looking I’ve done and from visiting friends who live in and around the Canton area, I would say the housing options for YPs are fair, but I honestly wish there were better options closer to downtown.
What do you like LEAST about Canton? The bad attitude and negativity! Canton has so much potential. We just need to get more people on board and we need to destroy the negative connotations that surround Canton.
What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? After attending my first ystark event, I decided to join. The sense of youth and community was so exciting to me!
What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? I’ve come to realize that there are many opportunities for community involvement and leadership, between the Chamber and various community charities. As far as cultural access and career opportunities, I feel we are lacking and this is something that is a cause of frustration for many YPs.
Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I grew up mainly in Magnolia and have worked primarily in Canton, with brief job experience in New Philadelphia.
What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? Downtown nightlife throughout the week, more art and music events that are tailored to a younger age group. I do think First Friday

is really starting to hit its groove in this area and needs to keep at it! What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? I spend a lot of time at either Muggswigz or the Auricle in downtown Canton. I’m honestly so thankful that the Auricle is here. I think a trendy, eclectic venue was one of the things that Canton was in desperate need of. What would you change about Canton if you could? I would try to create a greater awareness of the local museums, the cultural arts center and the symphony. We have a lot of potential but most people aren’t interested or don’t know that they have access to these wonderful resources. Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? I’m honestly not sure! Probably not my entire lifetime, because there are so many places I want to visit and things I want to see and do, but for the time being I enjoy it here! What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? I am hoping to attend graduate school within the next year so that will probably be my main reason for leaving the area. Larger cities like Washington D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles are a huge draw for me right now, based on their art, museum, and music scenes.

SAFET Y COUNCIL The Federal Government – at it again! | July Stark County Safety Council Luncheon The area of Employment Law is rapidly changing. Are you upto-date? Do you know your rights as an employer and the rights of your employees? At the July Safety Council Luncheon, Attorney Gust Callas of Black McCuskey Souers & Arbaugh will share ways to reduce risks for your company. He will provide a legislative update on recent developments, including NLRB, EEOC/OCRC, OSHA, Postings, FLSA, social media and other employment issues. Callas is the only Dual Certified Specialist in Ohio in Labor & Employment Law, and in Workers’ Compensation Law in Stark
County and surrounding areas. He has lectured for continuing legal education programs and conducts training programs for businesses and trade organizations nationwide. Callas currently serves as coordinator for the Labor & Employment Service Group of the firm. He is also a member of the firm’s Litigation & Workers’ Compensation Service Groups. He has extensive experience in litigation and particular specialty in the defense and counseling of clients in employment-related matters. He has successfully argued cases before the Ohio Supreme Court, as well as the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. He received both his law degree and undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Akron, receiving both degrees with the highest honors. His background in accounting has assisted him in commercial litigation, as well as corporate practice. Callas served as past
president and board member of the University of Akron, School of Law, Law Alumni Association. He is recognized by his peers as one of the preeminent lawyers in his field, having received an AV Peer-Review Rating from Martindale-Hubble, and has been recognized as an Ohio Super Lawyer for nine years from 2004-2012. In addition, he was named to the Ohio Top 100 List for 2012 for Labor & Employment and selected for inclusion in the Super Lawyers Business Edition, a national publication, from 2010-2012. Come to the Leadership Stark County information breakfast on Wednesday, Aug. 15, to learn about each program, what they offer you, and which one will best suit the training and development needs of you and your employees.
The Spotlight Stark County program for young professionals enters its seventh year in 2012, and is more popular than ever with those who want to strengthen their leadership skills and be more involved in Stark County. The Spotlight Stark County course is ideal for building professionalism of your younger employees. Each of the classes will build their leadership skills by introducing a strengthsbased model for work relationships, hone their networking ability, and strengthen their ties to Stark County. ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Prizes to be awarded for Enshrinement Festival Photo Contest Cash prizes will be awarded in the 2012 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival’s 24th annual Photo Contest. Snapshot enthusiast or professional photographer? All are invited to enter by taking photos at any of the outdoor Enshrinement Festival events beginning July 20 through Aug. 6. Awards will be made in both the professional and nonprofessional categories, and some of the winning photos may be used in future Enshrinement Festival publications. Due to the generous support of the Western Reserve Group, cash prizes for the contest total $1,800, and $100 prizes may be awarded to each of the seven first place photos chosen from professional and non-professional divisions in the following categories: Balloon Classic/Jackson-Belden Food Fest & Fireworks, Concert and Fireworks, 2-Mile and 5-Mile Races (including the Kids Fun Run), Community Parade, Ribs Burnoff, Timken Grand Parade and Drum Corps International Competition.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL A “One of a Kind Celebration” awaits you in Canton this summer Enjoy 19 dynamic events over two weeks at this year’s Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Canton is widely revered as the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which means that it is also home to a truly One of a Kind Celebration—the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival! For the past 49 years, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to host the annual Enshrinement Festival. A unique partnership between these two community organizations, the professional staffs and more than 4,200 extraordinary volunteers work year-round in a true spirit of cooperation to plan the festivities which surround the central focus of the celebration—the enshrinement of football players, coaches, and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame—totaling 273 with the addition of the Class of 2012 Enshrinees. Since opening the museum on September 7, 1963, and the Enshrinement of the inaugural class of 17 football heroes, the Pro Football Hall of Fame has completed multiple expansions and improvements. The most recent is currently underway, and will provide an expanded fan experience as well as state-of-the-art preservation of historical artifacts. The project is aptly named The “Future 50” Project because its completion in 2013 will coincide with our 50year celebration and provide the foundation for continued success in the next 50 years! So you’re not a football fan? No worries! The 19 Enshrinement Festival events over two weeks are unique and diverse and will please all ages and interests. Thursday, May 10, 7 p.m. Canton Palace Theatre Fifty young women from Stark County and surrounding communities competed for the title of Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Queen. The queen and six court members help to welcome the current Class of Enshrinees to Canton for the festivities, but more importantly, they serve as goodwill ambassadors and role models for youngsters in the community while volunteering their time for a wide variety of civic organizations.

There is no better way to celebrate the Enshrinement Festival than with a giant fireworks extravaganza! Join us in downtown Canton for a variety of activities planned at the Cornerstone Square area in the vicinity of Tuscarawas Street and Walnut Avenue. The fun will begin at 6 p.m. with food and family fun, including face painting, balloon artists, costumed characters and crafts for the kids in the Chesapeake Energy Family Fun Zone. Musical entertainment will include the Malone University Singers and the rock and roll of Jimmy and the Soul Blazers. The festivities will conclude with an incredible pyrotechnic display launched from the Cornerstone Square parking deck approximately 10 p.m. – featuring the magic of Zambelli, “the First Family of Fireworks!”
2-MILE AND 5-MILE RACES
Sunday, July 29, 8 a.m. Pro Football Hall of Fame Nearly 1,900 people are expected to walk or run in the 2-Mile Race, 5-Mile Competitive Walk, 5-Mile Race and Kids Fun Run. Cash and/or other prizes will be awarded to top finishers in the 2-Mile and 5-Mile events, and both serious and recreational runners are welcome to participate. In the third annual Competitive Walking Division in the 5-Mile Race, prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers; the walkers in this division must be able to maintain an 18-minute pace. Starting the morning’s activities will be the eighth annual free, 400 meter, Kids Fun Run for youngsters six and under, where everyone is a winner! All races finish at the steps of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, offering great photo opportunities and the chance to visit the museum. ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Chamber and Hall of Fame announce committee chairmen Public Safety & Service • Game • Corporate Host • Appreciation Party The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Pro Football Hall of Fame have named the following key committee chairs: Thomas Ream, Public Safety and Service; Mark Prosise, Game; Mike Lancaster, Corporate Host; and Dave Dolan, Appreciation Party. Ream serves as the City of Canton’s public service and safety representative to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Committee. He serves on the Mayor’s administrative team as director of public safety, overseeing the police, fire and building departments. He joined the Healy administration in August 2009 after 32 years of service with the Canton Police Department, retiring as the Deputy Chief of Police. A graduate of the Southern Police Institute and the FBI National Academy, he is a member of the FBI National Academy Associates, International Association of Chiefs of Police, and FOP McKinley Lodge #2. He has extensive Enshrinement Festival experience through his duties from 1994 through 2001 as Canton Police Department Hall of Fame events commander. He and wife Marcy are the parents of two sons. The Chamber and Pro Football Hall of Fame committees of the Enshrinement Festival work closely with the City of Canton to assure the safety and comfort of citizens and visitors who attend the annual festivities. The level of cooperation from the City has been extraordinary over the past 49 years, and the Chamber and Hall are grateful to the city’s elected officials, department heads and employees who provide so much support each year.
Prosise is owner of A Child’s Place Nursery School, and a graduate of Jackson High School, Bowling Green State University, and Case Western Reserve University School of Law. He has served on the Game committee since 1999, and this is his second consecutive year as chairman. An active Hall of Fame volunteer for the past 19 years, he has also served on the Autograph and Enshrinement committees. Prosise is past-president of the Jackson Township Community Improvement Corporation. He and wife Sandra have two sons, Eric and Ryan. Under the direction of Prosise, with assistance from vice chairman Doug Hampton, the Game Committee is responsible for timing and coordination of the pre-game and halftime activities during the NFL/Hall of Fame Game, to be held at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, featuring the Arizona Cardinals vs. New Orleans Saints before a sold-out stadium and national television audience. Lancaster is president of NewMarket Financial Advisors. He has been an active Enshrinement Festival volunteer since 1976, serving as a ball-boy for the Hall of Fame Game as a youngster, and previously serving as chairman of the NFL Experience Committee. He supports other community activities as a member of the Stark County Board of Health and Walsh University Planned Giving Committee, is a member of the Hall of Fame Luncheon Club, and a graduate of Leadership Stark
County. He and wife Susan are the proud parents of one son and one daughter. This year, he chairs the Corporate Host Committee for the second consecutive year, leading the effort to provide increased hospitality services and support to corporate sponsors and their guests during the Enshrinement Festival events. He will be assisted by Steve Neisel as committee vice chairman. Dolan graduated from GlenOak High School and University of Akron and is currently AVP & Mortgage Services Manager at The Commercial & Savings Bank in Millersburg. An active Enshrinement Festival volunteer for many years, he previously served on the Souvenirs Committee and chaired the Special Services Committee. He also volunteers for Stark Parks and is very active at St Joan of Arc Church as a member of the finance committee, as well as a member of their orchestra and Timeless Jazz Band. He and wife Carolyn have three grown children and one granddaughter. The Appreciation Party is a non-public event held to show gratitude to the generous sponsors and team of more than 4,200 dedicated community volunteers who provide the resources and support to make the annual Enshrinement Festival such a huge success. The Canton Advertising Federation recognized creative excellence during its 2012 ADDY Awards Gala at The Krassas Event Center. The Sound of ADDYs! themed gala presented 21 gold and 43 silver awards from 206 entries to advertising and marketing agencies, photographers, freelance professionals and students. Innis Maggiore took home Best of Show, and judges awards went to StoneKap Productions, Innis Maggiore and Communications Exhibits, Inc. This local competition sponsored by CAF is part of a the national award competition sponsored by the American Advertising Federation with winners first advancing to a regional and then the top tier competition.
