Under the direction of Governor Mike DeWine, we are sending Ohio employers covered by BWC these non-medical-grade face coverings — funded from our existing budget and at no impact to employer premium — as our latest effort to support our employer community and workforce through this public health emergency. Ohio employers covered by the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) that report payroll (i.e. they have employees) will receive a package from us containing at least 50 face coverings.

Cost: Less than $1 on average per face covering, covered by our existing budget and at no impact to employer premiums. We began shipping batches on May 20. We are working on obtaining additional supplies so we can send even more face coverings in the weeks ahead. •

The face coverings don’t guarantee protection from COVID-19. However, public health experts say they lessen the risk for carriers to transmit the virus to others.

They are intended to support and enhance, not replace, any workplace safety and health efforts your employers already have in place.

We encourage employers and their employees to wear the face coverings, practice proper social distancing, wash their hands frequently, and follow other guidelines posted on coronavirus.ohio.gov.

Business Impact Survey R es u lts Signal L ong Ec onomi c R e c o v ery Thank you to all the respondents of our COVID-19 Business Impact Survey #2. The results will help our Chamber advocate on a state and federal level for much-needed business relief and assistance. As one of Ohio’s eight Metro Chambers, having good data from our business community is essential as our Metro Chambers move forward with a unified public policy voice.

Economic Impact •

The survey indicates that businesses have been hit hard. 46% of respondents have seen their organizations’ revenue decline by half or more during the pandemic and another 28% report a 30%-50% drop. 15% said their revenue was off by 5%-30%.

Nearly 60% of respondents report that their organizations remained open throughout the crisis. Of those who closed operations at some point during the past two months,10% have reopened completely, 21% have reopened partially and 10% remain closed.

Regarding employment, 54% of respondents have maintained their payrolls at pre-pandemic levels, while 46% report either temporary 38% or permanent 8% reductions in staffing.

Summary from COVID-19 Impact Survey #2: •

The coronavirus crisis has had broad and significant effects on our region’s economy, resulting in major declines in revenue and employment (despite the fact that many businesses have remained open through the pandemic). The PPP loan program was far more successful than the EIDL program, but the level of assistance received from both programs, while much needed, was inadequate in most cases. Given the magnitude of economic damage from the crisis, recovery will be a long process – and more federal, state and local assistance is needed to help get businesses and workers back on their feet.

The pandemic has had a significant impact on businesses in the region. All respondents reported being affected by the pandemic, with slightly more than half 51% saying their organizations have been “severely affected.”

More than 80% of respondents said their organizations had applied for an SBA disaster loan or PPP loan (or both).

Of the 12 respondents who said their organizations applied for SBA disaster loans (EIDL), half (6) received a loan advance and half (6) have been informed that their applications have been approved (although only 3 have received the funds). One respondent reported a denied application, and two have received no communication from the SBA.

The PPP loan program appears to have been more successful, with 74% of respondents (29) indicating that their organizations were approved for PPP loans (and all have received the funds).One respondent’s application is still pending, and two had their applications denied.15% report being unable to find a financial institution to work with on a PPP loan application. Regarding PPP loan forgiveness, nearly 70% of respondents indicated they were very or somewhat confident in their understanding of the rules, while 30% said they were “not very” or “not at all” confident.

Out of all 39 respondents, 26% received no loans, and 6% indicated that the money they received made little or no difference to the viability of their organizations. 44% indicated that the loans helped, but said they were still struggling, while 23% said the funding they received helped keep their organizations strong.

Education Update: Furloughed staff, reduction of hours, and remote working are, unfortunately, common practices instituted by many businesses during this stay at home order as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Add to this the college bound students who are now home due to the pivot by higher education institutions from classroom to on-line learning. More time at home presents opportunities for existing working staff, displaced workers, and those who have started on their higher education journey. This pause in business and classroom teaching offers the opportunity to “upskill” our workforce through on-line programs offering industry credentials and certifications through short term training for in-demand careers. Unemployed, underemployed, those affected by the COVID-19, and others can pursue career

enhancement certificates which are transportable skills in a given industry. Reallocated state grant dollars are available which makes this training free or at a low cost when coupled with PELL grants and other incentives through Stark State. Having an industry credential or certification makes a resume more attractive to hiring managers. In many instances the courses needed to earn the credential can also be applied to the path to earn an associate’s or eventually a bachelor’s degree. There are over 200 in-demand occupations as defined by the state. In-demand occupations include those with: • family sustaining wages • projected growth through 2024 and a promising future

Staying Afloat in Rough Waters? Successfully running a small business can be challenging in the most favorable circumstances. Staying afloat during rough waters roiled by the pandemic with its wide and deep effects adds to those challenges. Two long-time Canton Regional SCORE Chapter clients, both of whom have been recognized as Small Businesses of the Year, are classic examples of businesses that have been rocked by Covid-19 but also have scored some successes. Rick Carter launched SupportFire, a full-service IT firm, eight years ago. His business took a big hit when a major retailer suspended going ahead with Rick’s firm updating A-V systems in 24 of its stores. He lost another customer when it lost its franchise license. Rick didn’t cave. He moved quickly to connect with two referrals. Both led to 24-month contracts for full-system IT management. Kris and Lacie Hart have been running HartsSports LLC for about the same number of years. They specialize in designing and making logo’d apparel and vehicle wraps as well as free-standing signs and banners. Through April sales on a year-to-year basis had sagged significantly. They began ramping up email marketing, sending missives to all customers and prospects, emphasizing that they are available to help navigate tough times. Their action led to a food market ordering logo’d t-shirts, hoodies and crew neck sweaters. For another new customer, owner of a drive-thru, the Harts designed and produced signs, banners and truck decals and are expecting to do a vehicle wrap. In their email marketing, the Harts are including links to their website and business Facebook page. Next they will be emailing a second round of letters.

33rd Signature Class Even a pandemic couldn’t stop them! Despite the difficulties produced by the unexpected occurrence of a world-wide pandemic, the Leadership Stark County 33rd Signature Class persevered to complete their program. In a showing of strategic agility, the Leadership staff, volunteer facilitators, and guest speakers collaborated to produce the April and May programs through a combination of live virtual meetings, recorded presentations, and hands-on activities. Stark County Safety Council CO V I D- 1 9 U P D AT E In compliance with orders from the State of Ohio, the June Stark County Safety Council monthly luncheon has been cancelled. Safety Council members will be awarded one meeting credit for every meeting cancelled. The CEO Breakfast and Crime Prevention Breakfast will be rescheduled at a date to be determined. As this situation takes us closer to the end of the fiscal year, BWC is reviewing policy and legal requirements to determine flexibility with program requirements. When decisions are made regarding the Ohio Safety Council rebate program, we will share them with you. SCSC will continue to provide our members with relevant information regarding the coronavirus, safety programming, and safety tips.

Name: Rachel Hagemeier Occupation/Title/Place of work: Manager of Education and Community Engagement Canton Symphony Orchestra Age: 22 Why are you interested in Stark County’s Young Professionals initiative? As someone from outside this area, it is good to see an organization that is working on bringing young people together by giving them professional and networking opportunities. What would you share to encourage other people to join? This organization supports you as a professional and gives you opportunities to meet new people and develop relationships. Did you grow up in Stark? If so, where? If not, where did you move from and why? I grew up in Oklahoma, but I went to school in Cleveland, Ohio. I moved here to Stark County when I got my currently position at the Canton Symphony Orchestra. Why do you stay in Stark County, from both a personal and professional point of view? Even though I have only been in Stark county for a short amount of time, I have found Stark County to have a flourishing artistic community and residents that support their arts organizations. I think this is a wonderful community to start my career.

What do you like MOST about Stark County? It is a diverse community with access to lots of arts organizations, locally owned businesses, restaurants, industry, and the potential to expand even further. What would you change about Stark County if you could? Give me a year of living here and then I might be able to tell you. What do you see as valuable opportunities for YPs in Stark County when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? Young people in Stark County can take advantage of the many nonprofits here and become young board members. I believe nonprofits will benefit from having young perspective on boards and young professional will gain connection and experience. What would attract more YPs to Stark County? I think if what we have now was more publicized, people would be attracted to this area. We have wineries, business, and lots of arts. As long as we continue to support these things, I think people will continue to move to this area. What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Stark County or NE Ohio? I like to try new restaurants and explore the area. But since I am new, send me recommendations! Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Stark County and if not, what would cause you to leave? My field of work usually leads to a lot of travel, so I will probably move away from Stark county but I’m sure I won’t move because of Stark county.

Gervasi Vineyard has reopened its doors to all four on-site restaurants/venues in May (The Bistro, The Crush House Wine Bar & Eatery, The Piazza and The Still House). In addition, the company also reopened both the outdoor and indoor dining to its sister property, The Twisted Olive, located in Green. This announcement is following Governor DeWine’s “Stay Safe Ohio Order”. As a directive of Governor DeWine’s procedures on safety for restaurants, GV Destinations will follow the health department’s guidelines for best practices, including elevated cleaning and sanitation guidelines and protocols. These practices include: all employees will be pre-screened with temperature checks and required to wear masks, gloves to be used for designated kitchen and cleaning duties, and consistent handwashing and sanitation will be emphasized. The standard 6 foot guideline for social distancing will be put in to practice at all establishments.

After much consideration, the Domestic Violence Project, Inc.(DVPI) Board has turned its annual Champions of Hope Gala scheduled for Thursday, June 18 virtual due to public health concerns regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Champions of Hope is DVPI’s largest fundraising event of the year for the local nonprofit. DVPI relies heavily on the funds generated at the gala to support the services provided to victims of domestic violence. These services include emergency safe shelters in Massillon and Canton which serve hundreds of adults and children every year. The date for 2021 will be announced in the coming weeks.
