Leadership Receives Goodwill Ambassador of Year Award; Non Profits Value LSC’s role in Community Building Stark County non-profit organizations are becoming more aware and appreciating Leadership Stark County for showcasing collaborations, best practices, current trends, and facilitating board member placement. Goodwill and Community Harvest are two organizations that publicly recognized Leadership Stark County. Director Fran Wells joined Goodwill Executive Director Ken Weber and board member Marcas Miles (a Leadership Stark County graduate) on the stage as a special guest at the morning’s “talk show.” Leadership Stark County was honored for helping to educated and inform about the mission of Goodwill and the Community Campus. Leadership Stark County has led numerous tours and held a number of events at the community campus while explaining the concept to program participants and others. Seeing the community campus and all the organizations that are housed there is exciting for the Leadership Stark County participants as they envision their future contributions to our community. That this fits perfectly with LSC’s mission of developing motivated leaders in our community is illustrated by the observation from class member Kevin Barton of Edible Arrangements:

Twice the Space. Same Great Care. Affinity Medical Center’s Emergency Department Opened July 18th
The new Emergency Department at Affinity Medical Center in Massillon, Ohio, began accepting patients on July 18th – and the difference between it and the old ED was very apparent to anyone entering the hospital’s doors. First, the new ED is more than twice the size of the old one and it is equipped with impressive technology that was put on display for the public at a ribbon cutting ceremony and Open House celebration on Wednesday, July 10th and Thursday, July 11th.
Although the care provided in the new 22,000-square-foot ED will be comprehensive, the advances at the facility will be particularly important to those needing specialized cardiac and orthopedic care. “The two services we have really focused on and areas in which we’ve seen dramatic growth recently are cardiac and orthopedic surgery,” said CEO Ron Bierman in a recent news article. “That’s based on market need and what we’ve seen in this community: a significant number of people with cardiovascular disease and orthopedic issues.” In the past, Affinity’s emergency department has seen about 28,000 visits per year, and with the expansion, the hospital hopes to see that number grow about 5 or 6 percent in the first year alone. Among other amenities, the hospital’s expanded facility includes: A third cardiac-catheterization lab with a dedicated elevator for immediate access from the emergency department -- which can be key to improving patient outcomes. Eight large private-examination rooms with a total of 24 new rooms in the department.
Two triage rooms and two trauma rooms Improved security, and expanded parking. A dedicated isolation room can be set to negative air pressure which can be useful during situations like a chemical spill. The ability to lock down the entire department to protect staff and patients in the case of a combative individual. The 266-bed hospital broke ground on this multi-million dollar expansion in late April 2012, and throughout the process, ED physicians, nurses and EMS providers have provided invaluable input to make sure the facility is well suited to meet the needs of the patient. Affinity was recently recertified as an accredited chest pain center and over the past few months, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has named Affinity Medical Center as a Blue Distinction Center for both cardiac care and knee and hip replacement, an award for demonstrating expertise in delivering quality specialty care. Did you know . . . the Leadership Link is available on line at LeadershipStarkCounty.org Amy Wesely, chair, community awareness, has convened a small group of board of trustees members to evaluate Leadership communication efforts. This small group has suggested ways for the staff to be up-to-date with current trends. The first change put into effect is to publish the Leadership Link 3 times a year. Formerly the newsletter was printed 4 times a year. In recent years, we have expanded

the newsletter and have included the Signature Class graduation announcement inside one edition. We will now be producing the Graduation Announcement as a separate piece in late August. The graduation announcement is relished by local non profits as they seek new board members; we want to make sure that important announcement is featured prominently.
FOUR Custom Programs broadens impact in community Alumni work with Stark Community Foundation to facilitate the Summer Time Grants for 4th Year: Two dozen alumni and program supporters ranked grants to distribute $70,000 to numerous neighborhood and community groups for summer time programs benefiting children. TANF Poverty Simulation conducted for Mental Health Services And Recovery Board LSC staff, alumni volunteers and Job and Family Services staff directed the simulation as part of an annual training conference for nearly 100 directors and employees of organizations funded by the MHSRB Young adults participating in the Living Independently program for foster youth get job training awareness, leadership skills and
tours of Stark County. Personal leadership training and job tours across Stark County, in August 2013, is led by Leadership staff. Thanks to alumni and businesses for welcoming youth to see their facililties.

Summertime Kids Program Reaches Milestone of $1 Million in Grants to the Community Stark Community Foundation’s SummerTime Kids program reached a milestone with the announcement of its 2013 grant awards. The program, now in its 21st year, has exceeded $1 million in grants to imaginative and unique summer programs with an emphasis on character and community service. The 2013 process was guided by alumni from Leadership Stark County, who were charged with reviewing applications and awarding grant dollars. Leadership Stark County is in its 5th year of assisting Stark Community Foundation with ranking and reviewing the ranks. The individual grants range from $500 to $2000. More than 34 neighborhood groups and non- profit agencies received grants in 2013. Leadership has provided volunteers throughout the years to the foundation. A formal relationship between LSC and the Foundation began during the 22nd Signature Class year as LSC assisted the foundation in reviewing the grant process
and its application. Currently, Leadership alumni are leading the process with plans to review the evaluation process. Stark Community Foundation provides an annual grant to Leadership Stark County in recognition of this work. Thirteenth class graduate Gloria Pope is a retired supervisor with the Industrial Commission of Ohio and served the Leadership Stark County board most recently as program chair. She is well known for her work on local non-profit boards, most notably the Canton YWCA. During her tenure on the Leadership Stark County board, Glenda Zink served two years as the selection committee chair. She is a graduate of the 19th class of Leadership Stark County and is Dean of Business & Entrepreneurial Studies at Stark State College.

Conferences Provide Best Practices and Current Trends Stephanie Snow Werren and Fran Wells traveled to Washington DC this spring to ensure that we are well trained and that programs offered by Leadership offer valuable learning experiences. Stephanie attended the 2013 Empowering Local Officials conference hosted by the Greater Cleveland Partnership, Cleveland Development Foundation and Congressman Jim Renacci. The experience provided Stephanie the opportunity to meet with elected officials from across the region and to meet officials in their Washington offices. Stephanie serves Leadership Stark County as assistant director and serves as a North Canton City Councilwoman. Please note that Stephanie’s title has changed to ‘assistant director’ from ‘development director and new program coordinator’. Not only less wordy, the title change indicates Stephanie’s greater role at Leadership and her increased involvement as a facilitator. Congratulations Stephanie! Fran attended the Association of Leadership Programs national conference in late June. The conference was attended by directors, staff and board members of more than 70 community leadership programs. Breakout sessions generally focused on curriculum content and evaluation, program growth, and asset building projects.

Tips for Effective Strategic Visioning: SWOT Analysis: Get this information from your board or participants before you convene a focus group or retreat session ICEBREAKER: Use this technique at the beginning if your board does not know each other. Craft the conversation to relate to the mission or event and connect your participants to each other. Limit to 10 minutes. Curt Werren Joins Leadership Judges Thirteenth class Signature Program graduate Curt Werren is the latest LSC alumnus to earn the status of judge in the Stark County community. Recently appointed to replace retiring common pleas judge, Lee Sinclair, Curt has worn many leadership hats and is well-known in the community as the executive director of Stark County Red Cross and formerly a partner at Day Ketterer law firm. Additionally, he has served on the boards of the McKinley Museum and the Stark County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board, and just completed service as president of the Canton Rotary. Curt joins five other Leadership Stark County graduates who are serving as judge in Stark County and beyond: Judge Scott Gwin, Ohio Fifth District Court of Appeals (1st Class) Judge Michael Howard, Stark County Family Court (7th Class) Judge Richard J.
