Spotlight Young Professionals Spurred to Action As part of the Spotlight Program for young professionals we were introduced to the Refuge of Hope, one of only two men’s shelters in Stark County which also provides six meals a week to anyone who needs it.

The Spotlight young professionals class presented a check to Refuge of Hope director Duane Wykoff.

We received a tour of the dining room and sleeping quarters and listened as Duane Wykoff, Executive Director, shared with us the astounding numbers of homeless and hungry people in Ohio. By October of this year, all of their beds were already being used and Duane expressed his growing concern about the need for beds with winter on its way. He’d been hoping to be able to purchase 10-12 cots to help them get through the winter. Each of these cots cost $100, which is also the amount of my monthly cell phone bill to put it in perspective.

As we left, I felt compelled to donate enough money to purchase at least one cot for someone who has nothing but the clothes on his back. Kristin Green, a fellow classmate, and I came up with a donation plan, and formally asked for the support of our peers hoping to put together a $1,000 donation to Refuge of Hope for the purchase of 10 cots. The outpouring of support was amazing. We presented Duane with a check for $1,645 at our last session. In another effort, class members got permission to harvest the remaining produce from the Canton Community Garden and also donated that to the Refuge of Hope for the meal program. We were truly inspired by the work being done at the Refuge of Hope and by the support and compassion of our Spotlight class members. (See page six for class list!)

Affinity Medical Center receives: American Heart Association’s Get With The GuidelinesHeart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award Award demonstrates Affinity Medical Center commitment to quality care for heart failure patients. Affinity Medical Center was awarded the Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure Gold Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association. This recognition signifies that Affinity has reached an exceptional goal of treating heart failure patients according to the guidelines of care recommended by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology. Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure helps Affinity’s staff develop and implement acute and secondary prevention guideline processes to improve patient care and outcomes. The program provides hospitals with a web-based patient management tool, best practice discharge protocols and standing orders, along with a robust registry and real-time benchmarking capabilities to track performance.

The quick and efficient use of guideline procedures can improve the quality of care for heart failure patients, save lives and ultimately, reduce healthcare costs by lowering the recurrence of heart attacks. Following Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure treatment guidelines, heart failure patients are started on aggressive riskreduction therapies if needed, including cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics and anticoagulants while in the hospital. Before discharge, they also receive education on managing their heart failure and overall health, including lifestyle modifications and follow-up care. Hospitals must adhere to these measures at a set level for a designated period of time to be eligible for the achievement awards. “Affinity is dedicated to making our care for heart failure patients among the best in the country. The American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Heart Failure program helps us to accomplish

this goal,” said Ron Bierman, CEO. “This recognition demonstrates that we are on the right track and we’re very proud of our team.” According to the American Heart Association, about 5.7 million people suffer from heart failure. Statistics also show that, each year, 670,000 new cases are diagnosed and more than 277,000 people will die of heart failure. However, many heart failure patients can lead a full, enjoyable life when their condition is managed with proper medications and devices and with healthy lifestyle changes. Affinity Medical Center is committed to partnering with its community, patients, physicians and employees to provide high quality, personalized, compassionate healthcare; contributing to a healthier community by promoting healthful living; and providing educational opportunities for healthcare professionals.

Agency representatives and Leadership Stark County participants will go through a rotation of ten-minute conversations to assess mutual interests. If your non-profit agency is looking to recruit new board members, try the Leadership Stark County board matching process. You will get to meet potential members and tell them what your agency does and hear them talk about their aspirations for community service. Please call the Leadership Stark County office for more information.
