98th Annual Dinner sets records for the Canton Regional Chamber Tim Timken At the Canton Regional Chamber’s 98th Annual Dinner, held Wednesday, Feb. 8, Timken Chairman Tim Timken and CEO Jim Griffith took the stage to a record crowd.

More than 825 guests eagerly awaited an unprecedented presentation by the company’s top leadership.

Together, Griffith and Timken presented their story of a company reinvented, with a new business model and fresh capabilities to capitalize on emerging markets and growing industries around the world – but one still very much grounded in this community.

Q: What were Timken’s full-year 2011 sales?

A: Record sales of $5.2 billion

Griffith’s presentation utilized an audience response system to poll the audience on some key facts about Timken, and the answers were often surprising:

While Griffiths’ presentation then went on to illuminate the momentous changes the company has engineered over the past decade, Timken’s presentation reinforced what hasn’t changed throughout the company’s history: “We owe much of our success to Canton, and we are still here, having spent more than $200 million since 2006 on a variety of projects in Stark County. We have additional investments on the drawing board, including our proposed $225 million investment in Faircrest.”

(continued from cover) Walter Trout’s practical schooling in blues started when he arrived in Los Angeles in 1973 and got gigs behind Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Finis Tasby, Pee Wee Crayton, Lowell Fulsom, Percy Mayfield and Joe Tex. But the real turning point was his tenure with British blues giant John Mayall. Trout became part of the Bluesbreakers’ lineage of great guitarists along with Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor. Beginning in 1984, he shared six-string duties with Coco Montoya in Mayall’s band, creating a flexible guitar dynamic that helped provide the Bluesbreakers a renaissance that returned the group to the apex of the international blues touring circuit.

Trout began leading his own group in 1989, and cut his debut album, Life In the Jungle, rapidly becoming a star in Europe. His first stateside release, 1998’s critically heralded Walter Trout, made him start down the road towards becoming the fixture of the American blues-rock scene that he is today.

Manse joined Bruner-Cox LLP in 1997, serving as managing partner from 2003 until December 2010. Before joining BrunerCox LLP, Ron was a tax partner at Ernst & Young.

Kiko is a CPA with 10 years of experience with a regional public accounting firm, Cohen & Company, followed by 10 years of industrial experience with two different companies. She is currently working as an independent consultant with multiple companies.

Kiko has resided in Stark County all of her life.

She was raised on a family dairy farm and is currently raising five children with her husband Jim on his family farm.

Kiko has volunteered with multiple organizations, sits on the Minerva Library Board and coaches youth basketball for Minerva.

In her spare time, she enjoys running, cooking, and dabbles with singing and playing the piano.

NEW Business Excellence Awards scholarship The law firm of Day Ketterer, in partnership with the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, has established an annual scholarship award in honor of the company’s 140th Anniversary. The scholarship will be awarded in conjunction with the annual Business Excellence Awards of Greater Canton to the local college student who writes the winning essay, entitled: “The Impact of Business and Free Enterprise on the Historic Development and the Continuing Success of the United States as a Global Leader.”

The scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in a Stark County college or university, including Kent State University at Stark, Stark State College, University of Mount Union, Walsh University, Malone University, Aultman College of Nursing or Brown Mackie College. The one-time scholarship can be used for tuition, room, board, textbooks or other educational expenses at any Stark County-based university or college. The scholarship will be presented on April 24 at the Business Excellence Awards of Greater Canton.

CONVENTION & VISITORS’ BUREAU CVB elects 2012 board of directors The Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau has announced its 2012 board of directors.

New members joining the board this year are Robb Hankins, president and CEO, ArtsinStark; Thomas W. Schervish II, CEO, Center Ice Sports Complex; and Dwayne Spencer, general manager, Hampton Inn Massillon.

Hankins has spent the last 30 years directing city, county and state arts agencies in eight different states, including Wisconsin, Connecticut, California and Oregon. He has managed annual arts campaigns, arts festivals, public art projects, arts education programs, and downtown arts districts. Hankins arrived in October 2005 to become the president and CEO of ArtsinStark, the County Arts Council. Today, ArtsinStark gives out grants, manages the Cultural Center, and runs the Annual Arts Campaign. Its operating budget of $2.6 million comes almost totally from the private sector.

In May 2011, ArtsinStark’s Annual Arts Campaign reached goal for the sixth year in a row – raising the highest amount in its 40-year history - $1,556,000. ArtsinStark’s mission is to use the arts to create smarter kids, new jobs, and healthier communities.

Schervish was born and raised in Stark County. He attained his bachelor’s degree in international business from Saint Michael’s College in Vermont, and went on to begin his career at CCM, The Hockey Company. His positions at CCM ranged

from customer service trainer to manager of the warranty department.

In 2002, he returned to Ohio to assist with his family businesses.

He is now president of Stark Management Services, a property management and bookkeeping firm. He also is the CEO for the Center Ice Sports Complex, a full service ice arena located in Jackson Township, and secretary/ treasurer for the Express Lube and Wash in Massillon. His civic contributions include trustee for Stark Parks, team captain for the ArtsinStark fund drive, founding member of the Young Leaders Society for United Way of Stark County, chairman of the board for Project Rebuild, Inc., board member of Pathway Caring for Children and treasurer of the Cystic Fibrosis Lifestyle Foundation.

Dwayne Spencer began his career in the hospitality industry with Holiday Inn North Canton, later going on to pursue a career with Hampton Inn Massillon, where he served as maintenance engineer, night auditor, front desk supervisor, housekeeping executive, and operations manager, before becoming general manager in 2006. Since becoming the general manager, Spencer has been able to elevate customer service to a level others before him were unable to achieve.

In 2010, the Hilton property achieved its first Quality Assurance Outstanding recognition.

Spencer serves on the board of the Massillon Salvation Army, is a member of the Massillon Rotary Club.

Throughout the last fifteen years, he has been committed to voluntarily coaching for the Canton Youth Football League.

Certainly one of the most memorable experiences for the Queen and Court will be their ride on the float in the Timken Grand Parade.

The Queen Pageant will take place Thursday, May 10, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Canton Palace Theatre. All seats are reserved at $18 each, and tickets can be purchased at the Enshrinement Festival Office, as well as through Canton AAA, and Massillon AAA. The Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant is not a beauty pageant.

While overall appearance is certainly an important component, contestants are judged based on personality, poise, beauty, communication skills, academic achievement and service to community.

If there is a tie at any point in the judging process, it will be broken by utilizing the scores for personality, poise, and beauty – in that order.

1, and must reside and, if employed, work within a 30-mile radius of Stark County. A Queen and six Court members will be selected to coincide with the number in the 2012 Class of Enshrinees, comprised of Jack Butler, Dermontti Dawson, Chris Doleman, Cortez Kennedy, Curtis Martin and Willie Roaf.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Enshrinement Festival names key committee chairs

Steering Committee, General Chairman Alumni Association Committee, Safety Management Committee The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of the Canton Regional Chamber has named chairmen for three key committees: Bob Timken, Steering Committee; William Schauer, General Chairman Alumni Association; and Ron Dougherty, Safety Management Committee.

Timken, managing director of Cormony Development, LLC, most recently served as the 2011 general chairman of the Chamber’s Enshrinement Festival committees.

The function of the Steering Committee is to assist and facilitate as needed to successfully accomplish the Enshrinement Festival mission statement and goals. This committee’s approval is required for crucial Enshrinement Festival issues, such as annual budget, ticket pricing changes and policy issues.

Timken previously served on the board of the Canton Regional Chamber, Canton Country Day School, and Canton Tomorrow, Inc., and as chairman of the ArtsinStark annual fund drive. His civic involvement has also included participation on the committee engaged in analyzing the local environment for attraction and retention of young professionals, now functioning as ystark! His current activities include service on several boards, including the Downtown Canton Land Bank, Mercy Medical Center, and ArtsinStark, the County Arts Council. He is a member of the advisory council for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. Timken graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science from The College of Wooster and previously served as

congressional aide to U.S. Representative David Hobson (OH) and as director of federal government affairs at McGough & Associates, Inc. He and wife Sara reside in Canton with their three daughters.

Schauer was the 2006 general chairman of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival. For the third consecutive year, he now oversees a committee comprised of past general chairmen, many of whom will offer assistance to the Enshrinement Festival in the areas of sponsor recognition, promoting community awareness and support in planning and producing Enshrinement Festival events.

Corporate treasurer of Schauer Group, Inc., he is a chartered property and casualty underwriter, as well as chartered life underwriter. He is past president of the Arthritis Foundation of Canton, and has served as a member of Canton Palace Theatre Association board, and Cultural Center for the Arts budget and marketing committees. In addition, he has participated in fundraising for the Downtown Canton YMCA, Malone and Walsh Universities, United Arts, United Way, and Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges. He and wife Bobbi have three sons.

Dougherty, of Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty Co., L.P.A., is serving his 17th term as chairman of the Safety Management committee.

He also serves as chairman of the Joint Coordinating Committee that serves as liaison between the Enshrinement Festival department of the Chamber and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

A Canton native, Dougherty graduated from Canton Lincoln High and was honored in 2000 as a Distinguished Alumnus. He graduated from Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia Law School, and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1957 as a lieutenant and captain. He is the only Stark County lawyer to hold the office of president of the Ohio State Bar Foundation, and he served as chairman of the Stark County Public Defender Commission for 26 years, as well as Canton Assistant City Solicitor. Active in and chairman of various Enshrinement Festival activities since its beginning in 1963, Dougherty was the founder of the Enshrinement Festival General Chairman Alumni Association, and its Individual Award of Merit recipient in 2009 and the 2002 Award of Merit recipient from Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Additionally, he was The Wilderness Center 2004 honoree and is the immediate past chairman of the board of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He has one daughter, one son and three grandsons.

In 2012, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Enshrinement Festival will mark the 49th anniversary of honoring the legends of professional football, which includes conducting a world-renowned festival celebrating the annual enshrinement of football players, coaches and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The collaborative efforts of this leadership team, combined with the professional staffs at the Canton Regional Chamber and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the dedicated team of more than 4,200 volunteers, will ensure the success of 18 diverse events over two weeks from July 20 to Aug. 6, 2012.

The Enshrinement Festival activities, attended by nearly 700,000 people, are expected to produce an economic impact of over $31 million for the Canton/Stark County area and $56 million for the State of Ohio.

In addition, millions will experience aspects of the Enshrinement Festival as events are televised and covered by other media.

The central focus and highlight of this year’s Enshrinement Festival will be the Aug. 4 Enshrinement Ceremony for the 2012 Class of Enshrinees, comprised of cornerback Jack Butler, center Dermontti Dawson, defensive end/linebacker Chris Doleman, defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy, running back Curtis Martin and tackle Willie Roaf.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Enshrinement Festival names auxiliary committee chairs The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has named the following auxiliary committee chairs: Alex Hoce, Communications; Dan Paumier, Special Services; and Dennis Manzella, Security & Logistics.

Hoce is a career firefighter/ paramedic currently with the Jackson Township Fire Department, and also a parttime captain and assistant training officer for Canton Township Fire Department.

He has fond memories of participating in Enshrinement Festival activities since he was a child, including selling pop, working the trash patrol and assisting with first aid efforts at the Ribs Burnoff. A graduate of Central Catholic High School, he attended University of Toledo and obtained a bachelor’s degree in emergency management from University of Richmond, Virginia. He is a member of the International Association of Firefighters and planning committee for Stark County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board “Youth Matters” project.

Hoce will be assisted by committee vice chairman Sally Hoce.

The Communications committee assumes responsibility for communications equipment utilized at all Enshrinement Festival events.

Members are responsible for distributing equipment, charging radios and telephones,

monitoring EMS activities and serving as a clearinghouse for inquiries from guests, patrons and media.

Paumier is retired from Westfield Insurance, where he served in the information technology department.

He has served on the Special Services committee since 2002, and this is his first year in the leadership position. His volunteer activities include SarahCare of Canton, Big Brothers of Stark County, and Elves and More of Northeast Ohio. He is married to wife Sally.

Assisting Paumier with committee duties is vice chairman Diane Novak.

The Special Services Committee assists many of the event committees with varied duties, including media and sponsor hospitality, registration at the Balloon Classic media flight, transportation for Drum Corps Competition and hosting the Timken Grand Parade float judges.

Manzella is assistant vice president of marketing for Western Reserve Group.

This is his first year as chairman of Security & Logistics, and he previously served as chairman of the Appreciation Party Committee and is also currently a member of the Hall’s Enshrinement and Game Committees. A graduate of St. John’s University and New York University, he is a member of PIA of Ohio and Indiana, and Big “I” Agent Association of Ohio

and Indiana. He is married to wife Rose Ann. Serving as vice chairman of the Security & Logistics committee is Michele Shaffer.

The Security & Logistics committee issues security passes for all personnel servicing the events, oversees the delivery, distribution and security of food, beverage, flowers, favors, programs and other items necessary to the success of the three indoor events, and monitors movement of people from the perimeter rooms into the main auditorium for the program portion of each of the three events. The committee also provides security support for the Queen Pageant, Drum Corps Competition, Community Parade, Ribs Burnoff, Concert & Fireworks, Race and Timken Grand Parade committees.

Name: Aron Kitzmiller Age: 34 Occupation/Title/Place of work: Director, Marketing, Westfield Belden Village Why are you interested in Canton’s Young Professionals initiative? I am interested in and care about the wellbeing of Canton and the surrounding area. ystark!’s young professional initiative is a very important part of the idea of improving who you are and where you live.

What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? I have met and formed relationships with very smart, energetic and enthusiastic people. I see a lot of doing, and not just talking. The events are very diverse and give you an opportunity to really select what works for you.

Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I grew up in Canton South (Go Wildcats), went to college in Cincinnati (Go Bearcats) and then moved back to Stark County to take a job with Junior Achievement, before having the great opportunity to spend a few years learning from the area’s best at Aultman and AultCare. I moved over to Westfield Belden Village five years ago, and work with the best team one could ever hope for.

Why have you chosen to live in Canton? I am happy with the overall environment that this area provides, especially for a family. I really feel so close to everything without it being forced down my throat. I like having the diverse options this area provides.

What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area? I live in a house, and find that there are a lot of very reasonably priced developments that have popped up over the past decade with good homes and condo options.

What do you like MOST about Canton? It’s close enough to nearly everything, but just far enough away to add some fresh air.

What do you like LEAST about Canton? It seems like we, as a community, focus on the negative too much. You are going to have issues and problems everywhere; we have to change in order for that thought process to begin to change.

What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? To be a community this size and have so many Fortune 500 companies so close, not too mention top notch health care facilities and great

colleges and universities, all I can say is wow. Also, to have our own symphony orchestra and all the other amazing programs in this area, we are truly blessed. Leadership is a state of mind and it is up to you where and when you take that initiative. The opportunities are certainly here.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? This area is really working towards providing a culture that attracts YPs, but there are still chunks of that culture and attitude missing.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? I have been playing softball for years and there are a lot of great places to hang out. I also enjoy going to see the Canton Charge play whenever I get a chance.

What would you change about Canton if you could? I would like to see a touch more stability, just overall.

Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? I enjoy other areas of the state and country, but I love my home town, so it’s definitely a possibility.

What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? I applied for grad school at UNC Chapel Hill after college; I really like the research triangle area of North Carolina. Westfield has 50+ centers in a dozen or so major US markets, so work could also be a reason.

SAFET Y COUNCIL Get that “chip” off your shoulder! MARCH STARK COUNTY SAFETY COUNCIL LUNCHEON At the Stark County Safety Council Luncheon on Thursday, Mar. 8, Linda Beachy, safety coordinator for Frito-Lay, will share the secrets to a successful, effective Return to Work (RTW) Program.

A strong Return to Work or Work Hardening program can have lasting benefits for a company that implements it correctly. SAFET Y COUNCIL Stark County Safety Council announces photo contest winner The results of the first ever Stark County Safety Council photo contest are in! The contest challenged everyone with a passion for photography to capture an image of workplace safety and health, and share it with the Stark County Safety Council membership.

Congratulations to R. G. Smith for submitting the winning photo!

BWC judges Robin Watson and Steve Hanna selected the winning photograph. The photo is a great captured moment that tells a powerful story of workplace safety. All three of the individuals in the picture are wearing safety glasses and hard hats. The individual at the top of the photo is tied off and wearing a harness to comply with fall protection requirements. The individual on the ladder is also wearing fall protection and can safely and quickly respond if his assistance is needed.

Congratulations to R. G. Smith on submitting the winning photo and on implementing safe work practices. It is also fitting that a photo depicting compliance with fall protection standards was chosen as the winner, as OSHA recently announced that failure to comply with fall protection is the most frequent OSHA citation.

SAFET Y COUNCIL Bullying in the Workplace featured at 2012 SAFETY COUNCIL AWARDS BANQUET On Monday, Apr. 2, the Stark County Safety Council and the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation will honor area companies who are committed to maintaining a safe workplace during the 2012 Safety Awards Banquet at Skyland Pines Event Center.

The focus of this year’s award banquet is Bullying in the Workplace, featuring keynote speaker Scott Warrick, JD, MLHR, CEQC, SPHR. Today, “bullying” is your number one workplace health threat – even worse than smoking! Find out how bullying can give you heart disease, short term memory loss and severe mental impairments including depression, and what can you do to protect yourself! Discover how you can financially measure the harm bullying has on your company’s ROI and the ability to attain your

SAFET Y COUNCIL Returning Ohioans to Work | 2012 Stark County Safety Council CEO Annual Breakfast At the 2012 Stark County Safety Council CEO Annual Breakfast on Tuesday, Mar. 22, Steve Buehrer, administrator and CEO of the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, will speak about what the agency is doing to reduce employer premiums and help Ohioans return to work.

Ohio Governor John Kasich appointed Buehrer as administrator and CEO of the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation in January 2011. He leads an agency of 2,200 employees that serves more than 225,000 employers and 1.3 million injured workers.

Known for his focus on fiscal responsibility, creating jobs, and emphasizing technology, Buehrer has helped engineer significant

improvements within various levels of government over the past 20 years. He also has extensive experience with workers’ compensation, previously serving as BWC’s Chief of Human Resources.

Buehrer was a member of the Ohio Senate from 2007 through 2011. In addition to serving as the chairman of the Insurance, Commerce and Labor Committee, he was also vice chairman of the Senate Highways & Transportation Committee. In addition, he was elected by his colleagues as Majority Whip, the fourth ranking leadership position in the Senate. He also received the Technology Advocate Legislator of the Year award for 2010 from Technology for Ohio’s Tomorrow. He won five Watchdog of the Treasury Awards and was named National Legislator of the Year by the American Legislative Exchange Council in 2002. A nationally recognized leader, he serves as the Chairman of the Midwest Council of State Government (CSG) and served as national CSG vice chair. Buehrer also served as a state representative from Ohio’s 82nd House District (Defiance, Fulton and Williams Counties). His leadership was

BIZ BITZ Dr. Jacqueline Novak, assistant professor, biology, at Walsh University recently secured a three-year, $356,556 grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to research the effects of the ovarian hormone relaxin in the treatment of post-menopausal coronary artery dysfunction. The NIH award is a first for Walsh University and for Novak. The grant provides an opportunity for Walsh students to join her in the research as well as collaborate with graduate students from The University of Akron.
