“Time to give that hat (or ponytail holder) a rest. Come in and see us. Appointments available for New Year’s Eve.” This step is important because content created out of this type of research/knowledge helps people identify with your business and think you are speaking to their specific needs. Speaking of…
Realize why they need you/what they want/what’s in it for them. Why do people buy what you’re offering? Do they want to look better, feel better, move quicker? Then take that a step deeper. Think about something else they could achieve working with (or buying from you). Consider things that make life easier and help them fulfill dreams.
Unless you are extremely fortunate, there’s a lot of competition out there. Your product or service must compete against a host of other businesses not just in your town but, potentially, across the globe. You’re also in competition with inaction or doing nothing at all.
If you haven’t analyzed the competition lately, you may be surprised by the competitive landscape. This morning, I discovered the design software Canva has launched an auto-writing feature so now I (along with thousands of marketing writers) are now in competition with AI, of all things. And while I can spend hours writing about how AI-generated content will never be able to trump the acerbic wit of my fellow humans, the truth is that some people will choose to go with the machine rather than hiring it out. The same may be true for your business.
You must find a way to become indispensable. Here’s how:
Since each business and industry are different, I can’t give you a strategic plan of specific steps tailored to you, but we can go over ideas that can be tailored to your business.
Know your market. You will never be indispensable to the entire world. Even someone who sells caskets must compete with the urn dealers. Don’t waste your time with those who will never be the right fit for you. Figure out who you help and concentrate on becoming indispensable to them. This can take discipline because we want to believe everyone could benefit from our business. But some customers are a better fit than others. Find them.
Identify your competition. It’s easy to identify all the businesses that sell what you do. But take that a step further. Competition is changing on a (seemingly) daily basis. For instance, fitness apps are now going to be in competition with Netflix that plans to launch a series of exercise videos (in conjunction with Nike Training Club) on December 30th. Competition is becoming less direct than a brick and mortar down the street. Next, ask yourself if a buyer doesn’t take the route of buying exactly what you sell, what are their options. For instance, if you cut and color hair, your competition is other salons, home dye boxes/processes, and inaction. People who are considering doing their hair always have the option of not doing anything. For that reason, a baseball cap may be your competition. Once you figure out who or what you’re competing against, you can start to craft some fun copy/ content around that. For instance building on the salon example, you could post,
Map out what’s holding them back. There’s a reason they’re not buying from you even though what you offer is what they need. Is there a barrier? For instance, if you run a gym, are they afraid there won’t be people like them there? Doubts lead to inaction. Do your best to address the doubts so you can speak more clearly to their needs.
Talk about what happens if they don’t choose you or don’t act. What won’t they achieve if they don’t buy from you? What will they continue to struggle with?
Consider extra content or services that can round out your offerings and make you indispensable. What can you add to your offerings to either create an experience or address additional needs they have. For instance, a business might add oil changes to its car wash, while a car wash could add a few gas pumps. Creating a one stop shop can help you bring in more revenue and save your customers time and money, making your business an obvious choice over the competition.
Becoming indispensable requires one thing above all else—a deep knowledge of your ideal customer. Once you know who that person is, you can offer them what they want, need, and can’t live without. Then all you have to do is convey that in your content and branding.

Workforce plays a crucial role in the success of businesses and communities. A strong and skilled workforce is essential to maintain and improve productivity, innovation, and growth.
Investing in the development of the workforce is crucial for both individuals and the larger community. By providing opportunities for education, training, and career advancement, we can help workers develop the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s ever-changing job market. This, in turn, will help businesses grow and compete in the global marketplace.
Moreover, a strong workforce is essential for attracting new businesses and investment into a community. Companies are attracted to regions that not only
have a talented and skilled workforce but also have the training and educational systems that support a skilled workforce. This creates a cycle of growth, as new businesses and investments lead to job creation, which, in turn, attracts more businesses and investments.
Furthermore, investing in the workforce can help to address the challenges of income inequality and poverty. By providing individuals with the skills and education needed to secure higherpaying jobs, we can help individuals out of poverty and improve the quality of life in our communities.
There are many opportunities through the state and locally that provide workforce training and funding for new and incumbent workers. Local training providers include our local high school

We welcomed Ohio Senator Al Landis (R-31) to the Chamber on February 24 for the first-ever Chamber Chat. A group of 26 members joined Sen. Landis in an engaging roundtable conversation about several business and public policy issues. Sen. Landis, a 33-year veteran of the steel industry and former state representative and county commissioner, currently serves as Vice Chair of the Senate Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee and as a member of the Community Revitalization, Energy & Public Utilities and Small Business & Economic Opportunities Committees.
Sen. Landis shared with the group his commitment to working on behalf of his district, which includes all or parts of Tuscarawas, Wayne, Stark, Guernsey and Muskingum Counties, to support business growth, education, workforce development, affordable energy and mental health and addiction recovery. Together with the Chamber Chat participants, Sen. Landis discussed the importance of expanding education and training programs to meet the needs of employers and job seekers while ensuring we have
programs in place to help those with mental health and addiction challenges recover and find meaningful employment. He also discussed the state operating budget process and his ongoing collaboration with other area legislators on regional priorities.
In the competitive landscape of today, employers must get creative with the benefits they offer. From flexible work schedules, to increased development opportunities, there is one benefit that still rules them all: health insurance.
Are you a small business owner on the fence about offering health insurance for your employees? The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has partnered with AultCare to offer a health care plan for the small business community through a Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangement (MEWA).
The MEWA was developed to provide additional options and to help control the costs of health care benefits. Medically underwritten MEWA rates may provide a less expensive option than a smaller community rated plan obtained under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This plan is available for small group employers with less than 50 employees.
According to a survey by Glassdoor, employees said health insurance is, by far, the most important benefit they receive from their employer. That’s why employers should offer health insurance to employees as their first company benefit, then add on additional benefits over time.
The top three benefits that make employees the most satisfied, according to Glassdoor’s study, are: Health insurance, Vacation and PTO and Pension plans, 401(K) & other retirement plans
If health benefits are a top priority for your employees, it should be a top priority for you. Offering it can help with recruiting and entice them to stay longer at your company.
For Chamber Membership information call 330-456-7253. For health care or health fund information, contact your independent broker or AultCare at 330-363-6390. All AultCare health plan quote proposals include commission, unless otherwise specified.

Firing an employee stands as a particularly unpleasant and stressful action for many if not most small businesses and non-profits.
The firing might be for cause, such as disruptive behavior in the workplace or chronic tardiness. Or perhaps it’s due to an organization’s or business’s financial difficulties. Whatever the reason, how the firing is handled can make a significant difference in its effects - on the business, on other employees and perhaps with customers.
In recent times firing by email has become more widespread. It does remove human contact from the process, but apart from letting the boss off the hook, few view that means as best.
Here are some firings and how they were handled.
• An employee was seen using his office computer to access a porn site. He was warned that a second such incident would mean dismissal. Weeks later he was seen accessing such a site again. He was fired immediately and led from the building
• An employee wasn’t working to required performance standards. Instead of an abrupt firing, the boss spoke
candidly with him and advised the employee to begin looking for something else in a different field. No deadline for leaving was set, but within weeks the employee found something else and left. (Later he thanked the boss for the way his firing was handled.)
• An employee was found to be rude with customers. His inappropriate and unwise behavior was discussed with him, and it was made clear that he had to change. He proved either unable or unwilling and was shown the door with no notice.
• An employee’s work quality was good, but he was chronically missing project deadlines. He and his boss discussed this shortcoming, and he was given a bogie: Complete X number of projects by deadlines or resign to spare his being fired. (Two weeks later, he entered the boss’s office and confessed that he knew he couldn’t succeed and was resigning.)
In firing an employee, if at all possible, treat the employee with dignity and respect. Look the employee in the eye. Answer questions. In other words, engage in actual human conversation.
If a business or non-profit doesn’t have an employee handbook that includes guidelines on firing, it should create one. It needn’t be a tome of hundreds of pages. It can be more of a pamphlet, and SCORE can provide counseling in developing one. Contact SCORE at cantonscore@gmail.com or 330-451-6509. Or visit the chapter’s website at www.score.org/canton
As an employer you should always be aware of any local, state, or federal laws that govern terminations and layoffs and make sure you’re in full compliance. Document all your actions in writing.

It’s simple…you only get out of it what you put in! Get active & involved and it will come back in spades.

Nine of the “Greatest of the Game” have been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2023. The Hall’s 49-person Selection Committee met virtually Jan. 17 to conduct the annual vote.
The new class of Enshrinees was announced during “NFL Honors,” a two-hour primetime awards special that aired nationally tonight on NFL Network, NBC and Peacock. The newest members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame are cornerback/safety RONDÉ BARBER, coach DON CORYELL, linebacker CHUCK HOWLEY, defensive end/defensive tackle/nose tackle JOE KLECKO, cornerback DARRELLE REVIS, cornerback KEN RILEY, offensive tackle JOE THOMAS, linebacker ZACH THOMAS and linebacker/defensive end DEMARCUS WARE.
Barber, Howley, Klecko, Revis, Joe Thomas, Zach Thomas and Ware learned of their election when a Hall of Famer knocked on their door. Those encounters can be seen Saturday, when NFL Network airs a one-hour special, beginning at 8 p.m. ET. The families of Coryell and Riley received the news in a phone call that included Hall of Fame President Jim Porter and a Hall of Famer.
The annual selection meeting capped the year-round selection process. The newly elected Hall of Famers were chosen from a list of 19 Finalists who had been determined earlier by the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee. Representatives of the accounting firm EY tabulated all votes throughout the process, including the virtual meeting.
The Class of 2023 will be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, Aug. 5, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.
Tickets for the Class of 2023 Enshrinement range from $35 to $175. Fans can learn more about the event and purchase tickets at www.profootballhof.com/tickets.
