The Canton Regional Chamber, along with its ystark! and Leadership Stark County departments, are proud to introduce a new quarterly event: Stark Forum: Inspiring Our Future presented by AultCare. Stark Forum will address a wide range of issues that affect our community, including workforce, health care, education, economic development, tourism, innovation, public policy and more. With the help of our distinguished invited guests and moderator, the goal is to take an in-depth look at how current issues may shape Stark County’s future, and what we can do moving forward: • What does the Strengthening Stark report mean for our communities, and where does Stark County go from here? • What do our mayors/township trustees see as their roles and opportunities related to the Hall of Fame Village? • What are our leaders doing to foster economic development, job creation, and quality of life? • What infrastructure improvements and investments are underway or planned? • What are our communities doing to work smarter and more collaboratively?
Canton, as well as the President of the Jackson Township Trustees join us as panelists, adding their unique perspective to current community conversations and initiatives. Hear their ideas on job growth and retention, increased county collaboration, and “where Stark goes from here.” Panelists include: Tom Bernabei, Mayor of Canton; Alan Andreani, Mayor of Alliance; Kathy Catazaro-Perry, Mayor of Massillon; David Held, Mayor of North Canton; Todd Hawke, President of the Jackson Township Trustees. Todd Porter, Special Projects Editor for The Canton Repository, will moderate this event and future events, and will allow time for Q&A. Tuesday, March 6 11:30 am-1:00 pm La Pizzaria, 3656 Dressler Road NW Cost: $25/per person, plated lunch included Register at www.CantonChamber.org
At our first Stark Forum, you’ll get a “peek behind the curtain” as the Mayors of Canton, Alliance, Massillon, and North

Morris, President & Hearing Specialist, HEARINC 48 million Americans report some degree of hearing loss. 60% of people suffering hearing loss are in the work force or education setting. By the age of 65, one out of three people has hearing loss. It’s a major public health issue and is now the third most common physical condition after arthritis and heart disease. At the March Safety Council luncheon, James M. Morris of HEARINC will explain how workplace hearing challenges can impact: relationships, risk, salary, personal development, productivity and profit. Thursday, Mar. 15 11:30 am-1:00 pm Alex D. Krassas Event Center 251 25th St. NW, Canton Cost: $17 per person RSVP at www.CantonChamber.org by Mar. 12
Reservations are required unless you are a season pass holder. All attendees will have a chance to win a door prize provided by our spotlight company. SPOTLIGHT CO: About our speaker: Jim has been a hearing instrument specialist since 2000. In 2001, he purchased HEARINC to develop it into a full audiology practice. As a native of Canton, he received his B.S. in Aerospace and Manufacturing from Kent State University in 1973. Jim became interested in audiology in 1998, when his father, grandfather, and several uncles - who worked in the industry and served in World War II - were constantly complaining about their current remedies to hearing loss. With a corporate background in problem diagnostics and solutions applications, Jim felt he could take a different approach to correcting hearing loss, an approach with a primary focus on restoring patients to the most active lifestyle possible.

ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR AWARD
NOMINEE NUMBER TWELVE: The M. Conley Entrepreneur-Of-The-Year Award
CANTON BREWING COMPANY Canton, Ohio
Photography by Shawn Wood, Studio 7 Photography
There was a kid growing up in northern Stark County who was a bit different than the rest. He would do anything for money. Deliver newspapers. Shovel driveways. Cut grass. Wax cars. Fix old tractors, and more. He obviously wasn’t going to work very long for somebody else. Dave Beule has a hard time sitting still. Standing at the top of at least three different successful business ventures, he seems incapable of working on only one thing at a time. Thank goodness, because the success of downtown Canton is closely tied to his Canton Brewing Company and real-estate holdings. They hold the key to turning a nondescript patch of grass between 3rd and 4th Streets into a reasonable facsimile of Cincinnati’s renowned Fountain Square. You could draw a straight line from the 1988 TKE fraternity house at the University of Akron to today’s Market Square in downtown Canton. As TKE President, Dave Beule led the effort to save and restore the 200 year old frat house. The fight lit a passion for historic renovation, although the pilot light was already on from a youth spent restoring old things. As he started his accounting career, he soon found himself President of the Canton Preservation Association. Soon after he founded Appalachian Basin CPAs, an accounting and business advisory firm specializing in the emerging oil and gas industry. He was just getting started. As he built Appalachian Basin CPAs, one of his client’s offered him the deal of a lifetime on a large building at 3rd and Market. With Rite-Aide as a stable tenant, Beule was able to swing the deal. Twelve years later he stumbled across a book titled, “Brewing Beer Along the Tuscarawas,” the story of Stark County’s many pre-Prohibition era breweries. The next thing he knew he was researching old brewery companies on the Secretary of State’s web site. Finding five “dead” companies, he purchased their names for a song.
Four Generations Keeping Businesses Fully Supplied
Soon the Canton Repository, his old childhood employer, caught wind of his actions and wrote an article about the possibility of new life for old local beer brands. Here’s where good fortune smiled on Dave Beule. A local brewmaster read the article and contacted him. Soon the basement below the old Rite Aide became a marvel of masonry art as it was transformed into a speakeasy-themed brewpub, complete with massive stainless steel brewing tanks. Then a contemporary, casual restaurant opened at the top of a wide brick stairway. Without the instant recognition of chain restaurants, success has been slow and steady for the Canton Brewing Company. Recently, Beule purchased the old Frank’s Produce building on the western edge of Market Square. Working with Kyle Quillen from Agile Networks, the second floor will soon become a High Tech business incubator while the Canton Brewing Company’s new Sour Beer Program will be downstairs. Also opening this summer will be the Canton Brewing Company’s attractive new outdoor patio, changing the traffic flow along Third. With a new Sour Beer Bar along Court and young technologists lining the second story porch above, Dave Beule is taking big strides toward moving the beating heart of downtown Canton to Market Square. Lucky for Canton, he never outgrew his childhood drive to find new ways to make a buck.
