A message to our members from Dennis Saunier, president and CEO We have entered our 99th year of advancing business and developing community in Canton/Stark County. As we near the 100-year mark, now more than ever, it is time to plan for the future of our Chamber and its departments and programs.

Each year, our executive management team works to produce our annual Strategic Plan. In 2013, under the guidance of chairman Karen Brenneman, managing partner for Hall, Kistler & Company, and with the expertise of our vice chairman, Phil Fracassa, who serves as senior vice president of planning and development for The Timken Company, we will embark upon the development effort for our comprehensive, 100th year plan—a multi-year strategic plan to be unveiled in celebration of our 2014 anniversary. Each department, and our entire staff, will be involved in the process of creating this crucial document. (continued on p. 4)

We keep finding more, and if we act wisely, we can get out from under the power of the price cartel operated by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

greater fuel efficiency, and for all the other oil we need, Hofmeister said, “we have a northern neighbor (Canada) and a southern neighbor (Mexico)” that the United States can work with well under the North American Free Trade Agreement.

That’s what John Hofmeister told 600 people at the shale summit hosted by the Crain’s Cleveland Business newspaper in February. Hofmeister is the former president of Shell Oil Co. and founder of Citizens for Affordable Energy. We at the Canton Regional Chamber were pleased to participate in the Crain’s program by appearing on two panels and recruiting local manufacturers for a third panel.

Hofmeister said the United States uses 18.5 million barrels of oil and liquids per day but produce only 6.8 million barrels.

If the nation had the will to establish a long-term energy policy, it could produce enough natural gas and turn it into a transportation fuel that would allow the nation to “say sayonara, goodbye forever” to the OPEC dependency.

Using natural gas to its full potential as a transportation fuel could reduce the nation’s oil dependency by five million barrels a day, he said. We could increase domestic oil production to 10 million barrels a day, reduce demand by another two million barrels through

However, it requires good energy policy.

It requires the cooperation of local community leaders. And it requires engagement with the public so that citizens understand the economic value that the oil companies place on sound regulations and environmental protection. The cost of following the regulations and protecting the environment is far less money than the cost of haste and mistakes that resulted in the environmental horror that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico at a BP well in 2010.

When complete, the plan will address the role of the Chamber today, identify current and future collaborations, and highlight our strategic areas of focus, as we plan for the future of the organization.

The very nature of our mission, our brand, and our position in the marketplace will be highlighted in this guiding document, as will critical aspects of our continued well-being, such as succession planning and an analysis of our financial needs now and in the future. This past year, we took the first steps in establishing ourselves as the local leaders in oil, gas and energy advocacy for Stark County, and we worked with the City to establish the region as The Utica CapitalTM. We’ve also worked with a local advertising firm to develop a tactical marketing plan to deliver on the The Utica CapitalTM brand.

We will spend 2013 answering the question, ‘what is our next move in oil and gas?’ We will dedicate staff and resources to further demonstrating our leadership role by implementing tactics from the oil and gas marketing plan, hosting unique oil and gas events and programs, and finding the most effective and efficient ways to solidify Stark County as the true Utica Capital.

And we will continue to direct each department of the Chamber to find ways to assist and engage the oil and gas industry and interests, while nurturing relationships with our established business partners.

( co n t i nued f rom cover) But we will be mindful of not only how we are marketing our region and its strategic position in the Utica, but how we are marketing our region to attract and retain businesses in general. From a strategic standpoint of potential business growth, in fulfilling current business needs and the business needs of the future, we will develop long-range business development tactics. These will include tactics for Mills Business Park, the potential of other new business and industrial parks, the areas surrounding the Akron-Canton Airport, and the areas south of downtown Canton. In addition, we will explore our role in marketing greater Northeast Ohio.

One of my personal goals for the coming year is to further empower all members of our staff, at all levels. We want each member of our team to have the opportunity to offer input about the direction of the organization, even in small measures. We’ve begun with establishing an advisory committee comprised of midmanagement and administrative staff in order to share the ideas and issues coming out of each department. But I will take this work a step further in 2013, by personally meeting more collectively and individually with the departments. I believe that these measures will help with the continuous development of our high quality, diversified team.

This year, we will not only use these newly developed elements and tactics, but we will finalize and enact an ongoing communications plan with current and lapsed members to increase our retention rates, and ultimately, our revenue.

Finally, financial oversight will be foremost in our minds as we work in the areas of strategic planning, oil and gas, regional economic development and marketing, and membership. Funding our organization becomes more challenging each year, and moving forward, we will seek new revenue streams for the Chamber and its departments.

March Stir After Hours at 356th Fighter Group Restaurant We’re stirring up nostalgia at the March Stir After Hours at the 356th Fighter Group Restaurant on Thursday, Mar. 28.

Culinary sensations and networking celebrations abound with great views of the CAK runways and a swinging good time for everyone. The restaurant will be cooking up some of their menu favorites!

For more than 25 years, the 356th Fighter Group has been the area’s only authentic WWII restaurant dedicated to the heroes of the war. The 356th Fighter Group was an actual airborne team that saw combat in the European Theater. The 356th Fighter Group was stationed at the Martelsham Heath Airfield in Suffolk, England, and completed 413 combat missions. It is to these brave and courageous men that the restaurant is dedicated.

The locally-owned and operated restaurant and cabaret is located on the south runways of the Akron/Canton Airport. Huge windows overlook the airport runways to enable guests to view the building and its grounds. UPCOMING EVENTS Malina Moye and Shane Dwight to headline 2013 Blues Festival The Northeast’s premier free blues festival, Canton Blues Fest, has announced a 2013 lineup sure to strike a chord with blues fans large and small!

The FREE outdoor summer festival, now in its 12th year, is presented by Canton Development Partnership, a department of the Canton Regional Chamber.

The 2013 festival is happening in downtown Canton on Friday, June 7, and Saturday, June 8, and will feature headliners Malina Moye on Friday at 8:30 p.m., and Shane Dwight on Saturday at 8:30 p.m., along with music all day from noon to 10:30 p.m.

Business Excellence Awards committee leadership The Business Excellence Awards of Greater Canton is managed by a volunteer committee, led by chairman Louanne Kiko, independent accounting consultant.

The $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to the author of the winning essay entitled: “The Impact of Business and Free Enterprise on the Development and the Continuing Success of the United States as a Global Leader.”

The scholarship will be awarded to a Stark County high school senior or Stark County resident currently enrolled in college.

The one-time scholarship can be used for tuition, room, board, textbooks or other educational expenses at any college or university in the United States. The scholarship will be presented on May 7 at the Business Excellence Awards of Greater Canton.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Friday, April 12, and details regarding the application for the scholarship can be found at www.dayketterer.com.

Kiko has resided in Stark County all of her life. She was raised on a family dairy farm and is currently raising five children with her husband Jim on his family farm. She has volunteered with multiple organizations, sits on the Minerva Library Board and coaches youth basketball for Minerva. In her spare time, Kiko enjoys running, cooking, and dabbles with singing and playing the piano.

Business Excellence Awards scholarship The law firm of Day Ketterer, in partnership with the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, will award their second annual scholarship award at the Business Excellence Awards in 2013. The scholarship is designed to acknowledge the importance of the role of business in the community and the nation, and to encourage students to continue to expand their business and leadership skills and to contribute to their local business community upon graduation from college.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Deadline nearing for Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant applications The deadline for the annual Enshrinement Festival Queen Pageant is nearing. Contestants must submit a completed application and $70 fee to the Enshrinement Festival department at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 11.

Prospective contestants can apply online at www.profootballhofef.com/queenpageant, request a paper application by contacting Kathy Lindenberger, event manager, at (330) 458-2056 or kathyl@ cantonchamber.org, or by coming to the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, (located at 222 Market Avenue North in downtown Canton) weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Queen Pageant will take place Thursday, May 9, beginning at 7 p.m. at Canton Palace Theatre. All seats are reserved at $20 each, and tickets can be purchased at the Enshrinement Festival

While overall appearance is certainly an important component, contestants are judged based on personality, poise, beauty, communication skills, academic achievement and service to community.

If there is a tie at any point in the judging process, it will be broken by utilizing the scores for personality, poise, and beauty—in that order.

Candidates cannot be younger than a high school senior and 18 years old by May 1 or more than 23 years of age before Sept. 1. Candidates must reside and, if employed, work within a 30-mile radius of Stark County. A Queen and seven Court members will be selected to coincide with the number in the 2013 Class of Enshrinees, comprised of Larry Allen,

Cris Carter, Curley Culp, Jonathan Ogden, Bill Parcells, Dave Robinson and Warren Sapp.

In addition to greeting guests at most of the 19 events during the two and a half weeks of the Enshrinement Festival, the Queen and Court will volunteer their time to civic organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Turnaround Community Outreach Center, Stark MRDD and many more. Certainly one of the most memorable experiences for the Queen and Court will be their ride on a float in the Grand Parade.

Hoce, a retired Perry Local Schools teacher, has been a member of the Communications Committee since 2007 and served as vice chairman in 2011 and 2012. A graduate of the former Glenwood High School, she obtained her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Kent State University, and a master’s degree in gifted education from Ashland University. A member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Women Educators, she is active with Mercy Service League and is a member of the women’s board of Springhill Historic Home. She has one son and he preceded her as chairman of the Communications Committee.

Hoce will be assisted by committee vice chairman Gary Bradway.

The Communications committee assumes responsibility for communications equipment utilized at all Enshrinement Festival events. Members are responsible for distributing equipment, charging radios and telephones, monitoring EMS activities and serving as a clearinghouse for inquiries from guests, patrons and the media.

Paumier is retired from Westfield Insurance, where he served in the information technology department.

He has served on the Special Services Committee since 2002, and this is his second year in the leadership position.

His volunteer activities include SarahCare

of Canton, and Elves and More of Northeast Ohio. He is married to wife Sally.

Assisting Paumier with committee duties is vice chairman Diane Novak.

The Special Services Committee assists many of the event committees with varied duties, including media and sponsor hospitality, registration at the Balloon Classic media flight, transportation for Drum Corps Competition, and hosting the Grand Parade float judges.

Manzella is assistant vice president of marketing for Western Reserve Group.

This is his second year as chairman of Security & Logistics, and he previously served as chairman of the Appreciation Party Committee and is currently a member of the Hall of Fame’s Enshrinement and Game Committees. Manzella attended St. John’s University and New York University and is a member of PIA of Ohio and Indiana, and Big “I” Agent Association of Ohio and Indiana. He is married to wife Rose Ann. Serving as vice chairman of the Security & Logistics Committee is Michele Shaffer.

The Security & Logistics Committee issues security passes for all personnel servicing the events, oversees the delivery, distribution and security of food, beverage, flowers, favors, programs and other items necessary to the success of the three indoor events, and monitors movement of people from the perimeter

rooms into the main auditorium for the program portion of each of the three events. The committee also provides security support for the Queen Pageant, Drum Corps Competition, Community Parade, Ribs Burnoff, Concert & Fireworks, Race and Grand Parade committees.

In 2013, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Enshrinement Festival will mark the 50th anniversary of honoring the legends of professional football, which includes conducting a world-renowned festival celebrating the annual enshrinement of football players, coaches and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The collaborative efforts of this leadership team, combined with the professional staffs at the Canton Regional Chamber and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the dedicated team of more than 4,200 volunteers, will ensure the success of 19 diverse events from July 19 to Aug. 6, 2013.

The Enshrinement Festival activities, attended by nearly 700,000 people, are expected to produce an economic impact of over $32 million for the Canton/Stark County area and $56 million for the State of Ohio. In addition, millions will experience aspects of the Enshrinement Festival as events are televised and covered by other media.

The central focus and highlight of this year’s Enshrinement Festival will be the Aug. 3 Enshrinement Ceremony for the Class of 2013 Enshrinees: Larry Allen, Cris Carter, Curley Culp, Jonathan Ogden, Bill Parcells, Dave Robinson, and Warren Sapp.

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival names 2013 key committee chairs Steering | General Chairman Alumni | Safety Management The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce has named chairmen for three key committees: Candy Wallace, Steering Committee; William Schauer, General Chairman Alumni Association; and Ron Dougherty, Safety Management Committee.

Wallace, a longtime and extremely active community volunteer, most recently served as the 2012 general chairman of the Chamber’s Enshrinement Festival committees. The function of the Steering Committee is to assist and facilitate as needed to successfully accomplish the Enshrinement Festival mission statement and goals. This committee’s approval is required for crucial Enshrinement Festival issues, including the annual budget, ticket pricing changes and policy issues.

Wallace has been deeply involved in Enshrinement Festival activities for many years, including serving in 2011 as general vice chairman, as well as prior service on the Fashion Show Luncheon Committee, and as chairman of both the Food and Enshrinees’ Gold Jacket Dinner Committees. Elsewhere in the community, she is a member of the Aultman Hospital Women’s Board and provides volunteer service to Stark Community Foundation, Stark Education Partnership, Sisters of Charity, SPARK, Plain Local Schools and Leadership Stark County. She and her husband William reside in Canton and have four children and three grandchildren.

Schauer was the 2006 general chairman of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival. For the fourth consecutive year, he now oversees a committee comprised of past general chairmen, many of whom will offer assistance to the Enshrinement Festival in the areas of sponsor recognition, promoting community awareness and support in planning and producing Enshrinement Festival events.

Corporate treasurer of Schauer Group, Inc., he is a chartered property and casualty underwriter, as well as chartered life underwriter. He is past president of the Arthritis Foundation of Canton and past president of the Buckeye Council Boy Scouts of America. In addition, he has participated in fundraising for the Downtown Canton YMCA, Malone and Walsh Universities, United Arts, United Way and Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges. He and his wife Bobbi have three sons.

honored in 2000 as a Distinguished Alumnus. He graduated from Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia Law School, and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1957 as a lieutenant and captain. He served as chairman of the Stark County Public Defender Commission for 26 years and as Canton Assistant City Solicitor. He is the only Stark County lawyer to hold the office of president of the Ohio State Bar Foundation, and the only Stark County lawyer or judge to ever receive the Foundation’s Ritter Award (2012), its highest award given to one lawyer or judge each year.

Active in and chairman of various Enshrinement Festival activities since its beginning in 1963, Dougherty was the founder of the Enshrinement Festival General Chairman Alumni Association as well as its Individual Award of Merit recipient in 2009, and was the 2002 Award of Merit recipient at the Canton Regional Chamber’s Community Salute Awards. Additionally, he was The Wilderness Center 2004 honoree and is a member of the board and executive committee of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He has one daughter, one son and three grandsons.

Dougherty, of Krugliak, Wilkins, Griffiths & Dougherty law firm, is serving his 18th term as chairman of the Safety Management Committee.

He also serves as chairman of the Joint Coordinating Committee that serves as liaison between the Enshrinement Festival department of the Chamber and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

A Canton native, Dougherty graduated from Canton Lincoln High and was

Dublikar appointed ystark! chair for 2013; executive committee leadership announced ystark!, a department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, has announced that Eric Dublikar, marketing specialist, Aultman Health Foundation, will serve as the 2013 chair of ystark!’s executive committee.

Ryan Hollingsworth, communications and social media manager, Akron-Canton Airport, will serve as vice chair.

Dublikar has previously served ystark! as vice chair in 2012, and as chair of the business outreach committee. He received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Xavier University.

Currently, he is a marketing specialist at Aultman Hospital and the marketing and public relations liaison for Aultman Orrville Hospital, where he has been employed for over four years. He is a 2010 graduate of the Exploring Leaders program at Aultman. He has also served on the Malone University Career Development Advisory Board, as a volunteer baseball coach and currently sits on the St. Thomas Aquinas High School Board of Trustees. A Canton native, he is married to Angela Dublikar.

It’s important for young professionals to be involved in the community where they live and work. ystark! is a great way to get involved and meet new people in Canton/ Stark County.

What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.?

They have great speakers and the events are a good time. It makes networking fun.

Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I grew up in Tuscarawas County and graduated from New Philadelphia High School. I went to Kent State University Kent campus, for

my undergraduate degree and then went to Capital University for my law degree.

I worked at the Attorney General’s office in Columbus for four years and moved back to Tuscarawas County in December 2011, when I started working at Black McCuskey.

What do you like MOST about Canton?

I love that it’s a small ‘big city’. There are great restaurants and shopping, but there’s much less traffic and crime than in bigger cities.

What are the opportunities for YPs in the region when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? There really are a lot of opportunities, considering the size of Canton. There are several universities in the Canton area, as well as top-notch hospitals. There are also more cultural opportunities than many would expect with organizations like ArtsinStark and local businesses like Canton Food Tours.

What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? Industry has the largest impact (positive or negative) on luring YPs to a region. I think that, thanks in large part to shale drilling over the next five to ten years, you’ll see a lot more of the energy industry here locally, which in turn will attract more YPs.

What would you change about Canton if you could? I would like to see more local shopping boutiques and living options in the downtown area. I spent some time in Portland, Maine, recently, and they had restored much of the downtown district with wonderful local shopping. I think Canton needs to focus more on this. If there were affordable condo/apartment complexes downtown, it might attract YPs working downtown as well as the local off-campus college crowd (and staff ) from the several colleges in the area, which will go a long way toward helping to develop a more viable central business and shopping district.

Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? Absolutely, it’s a great place to raise a family.

What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? I can’t see myself leaving; my husband and I left Columbus to raise our kids close to family. I love that I can work in a thriving city and still be able to do that. It’s the perfect balance for me, personally and professionally.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? My husband and I like to bring our kids to the Belden Village mall (and the surrounding shopping areas), especially in the winter when it is too cold to be outside for very

BIZ BITZ Innis Maggiore has announced two new staff members. Kaylynn Arnold and Justin Brown have joined the staff of associates.

Arnold is an art director and Brown is an account coordinator. Arnold is a recent graduate of Columbus College of Art & Design where she studied advertising and graphic design. She previously worked at JWT Action in Akron, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Big Red Rooster in Columbus. Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration at Ohio State University. He graduated magna cum laude with a double major in marketing and logistics. He brings experience gained as a personal banker at U.S. Bank and as a research analyst at financial services company Jx4, Inc. in Canton.

The University of Mount Union’s Board of Trustees has welcomed three new members. John J. Flynn (’71), Laurence Talley (’91) and Gretchen L. Schuler (’96) have joined the Board. Flynn graduated cum laude from Mount Union with a bachelor’s degree in economics and business administration. Flynn earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1974 from The Ohio State University. Owner of Keith and Flynn in Kent, Flynn has practiced law at the firm for 38 years. Talley received a bachelor’s degree from Mount Union, majoring in accounting and minoring in business administration.

In 1998, he received a master’s degree in business administration from John Carroll University. Talley is a senior manager, certified public accountant and certified internal auditor at Ernst & Young. Schuler earned a bachelor’s degree from Mount Union, majoring in history and minoring in political science and German. After graduation, she earned a master’s degree in history from Cleveland State University. In May 2011, Schuler was named vice president of insurance-risk management & technical documentation at Invacare Corporation.

RETTEW recently welcomed new hires Thomas “Brad” Burwell, Michael J. Goff, PE, Kevin M. McCarthy and Derek H. Smith.

Burwell is a group manager in the firm’s natural sciences division in RETTEW’s Canton office, responsible for managing the dayto-day operations of project teams and coordinating work activities for Canton’s natural sciences group. Goff is a senior engineer in the civil/municipal group in

RETTEW’s Canton office. Working with oil and gas clients involved in Ohio’s Utica Shale play, he provides construction management and oversight of temporary freshwater lines required for hydraulic fracturing.

McCarthy is a senior environmental scientist in RETTEW’s natural sciences division in the firm’s Canton office. Working with oil and gas clients involved in Ohio’s Utica Shale play, he determines the best route for permanent waterlines needed for oil and gas extraction to minimize impacts to federally regulated waters, including jurisdictional wetlands. Smith is a senior environmental scientist in the natural sciences division in RETTEW’s Williamsport office. He works with various regulatory agencies on behalf of RETTEW’s key oil and gas clients to secure environmental permits required for water pipelines needed for oil and gas extraction.

For the eighth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Malone University among the top Regional Universities in the Midwest according to latest issue of America’s Best Colleges 2013.

The issue ranks Malone in a six-way tie for 60th place of the 149 regional universities located in the Midwest, along with College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio), Missouri State University, Spring Arbor University (Mich.), University of Wisconsin – Stout, and Ursuline College (Ohio). U.S. News & World Report uses a number of relevant criteria including peer assessment, retention, alumni giving, and acceptance rate to determine college rankings.

Ron DeBarr, president and CEO of the Northeast Ohio Trade & Economic Consortium (NEOTEC), was elected to a oneyear term as vice chairman of the board of directors of the National Association of Foreign-Trade Zones (NAFTZ) at the organization’s annual conference. DeBarr has served in a leadership role with the NAFTZ since 2008, including chair of the grantee committee, secretary, and most recently as treasurer. He also received certification by the NAFTZ as an Accredited Zone Specialist for his expertise and leadership in the FTZ program. The NAFTZ is a nonprofit trade association based in Washington, D.C., that works to promote and improve foreign-trade zones and their use, respond to the competitive needs of zone users, and connect global businesses with local communities through the FTZ program.

The Belden Brick Company, a manufacturer of brick and masonry-related construction products and materials, donated 14,100 bricks to Ohio’s new Geological Walk Through Time Exhibit, a paved walkway that now resides within the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) area of the state fairgrounds. The walkthrough is a 286-foot-long set of

educational exhibits detailing the geological history and composition of the state.

The exhibits include the world’s largest geological bedrock map, depicting all 88 counties of Ohio. Boulders from quarries across the state were moved to the site, aptly representing the composition of Ohio’s diverse geological areas. The project is privately funded and made possible by donations to the Friends of the Ohio Governor’s Residence and Heritage Garden.

Mercy Medical Center has received the American College of Cardiology Foundation’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2012 – one of only 164 hospitals nationwide to do so. For the second consecutive year, Walsh University has been named one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Now in its fifth year, the Great Colleges program has become one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognitions programs in the country. The results, released August 10 in The Chronicle’s fifth annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a national survey of nearly 47,000 employees at 294 colleges and universities.
