Flipping a Fender Stratocaster upside-down, acclaimed singer/songwriter and lefty guitarist Malina Moye will perform at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, June 7. Described as a modern day Renaissance woman, she’s a quadruple threat, carving out her own lane in today’s music scene as one of the few artists in history able to straddle both rock and soul genres.

Moye’s musical narrative boasts an impressive resume that includes making history as the first African-American woman to play the National Anthem on guitar at a major sporting event, performing at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and owning her own successful record label. Recently, Jet Magazine praised her as “the highlight of the evening” after she headlined a sold-out concert with Chaka Khan to honor the legendary humanitarian Stevie Wonder.

We have endured a winter that we thought would never end. Now, finally, it is warm again and the downtown streets and sidewalks are bustling with people!

It is time to welcome our new businesses to downtown. Corporate Downtown Bar & Grill replaces Pete’s Grill at Cherry Avenue and Fourth St. NE. Sheri’s at Shears has opened to serve food and drink at the former Peter Shears location at 427 Tuscarawas Street E. Deli Ohio will occupy the previously vacant building at 328 Walnut Avenue NE. Cork and Canvas at 320 Third St. NW and Grapes in a Glass at 575 Market Avenue N. will specialize in wine.

And all of this is happening as the summer season sets upon the downtown center city.

Erin Thompson, our new downtown events manager, has been working with event committee members to deliver Taste of Canton (May 22 & 23), Canton Blues Festival (June 7 & 8), Vintage Canton (Sept. 19) and Light Up Downtown (Dec. 5). In early May, the Canton Development Partnership unveiled an updated version of our 2003 Downtown Master Plan. It was certainly prudent to update our existing plan based upon all the radical changes in our local and national economy. Our consultant, Charles Buki of czb LLC, provided his findings and offered recommendations on how to take our downtown to the next level of activity. We look forward to working with our committees, The City of Canton and the community to carry out this dynamic plan.

Plant for a cause: Help us beautify downtown Canton On Saturday, June 1, the tenth annual COLOR DOWNTOWN project will take place in downtown Canton. This annual planting of colorful flowers in the downtown flowerbeds continues to be an important beautification element in the downtown.

Once again, volunteers from church groups, area businesses, youth groups and downtown property owners are needed to help with the planting.

We’re seeking volunteers! Interested? Meet at 8 a.m. at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, located at 222 Market Ave. N. The

Downtown Canton Special Improvement District will provide the funds to buy the flowers and other planting materials for this year’s project.

By volunteering even a few hours, you’ll help make downtown Canton’s cityscape a wonderful place for the entire to community to enjoy throughout the coming summer months.

First Friday Tidbits Make a Difference | May 3 Helping hands, feeding the hungry, and adopting a pet are the underlying mission of an evening devoted to the nonprofits that keep Stark County safe, secure and satisfied. Tents with agency info are the backdrop to a heartwarming night of summer song, dance, new art and new friends as the monthly street party moves back outside and ready for release from a wicked winter’s grasp.

Red, White and Blues | June 7 This First Friday bridges the blues from street to street, connecting the dots and the dancers as it ties to the twelfth annual Canton Blues Festival, taking over our downtown this weekend. All the galleries will be getting down with music, new art and summer sales in this all-American celebration of hot licks, cool chicks and heart-pounding kicks.

Chalk the Walk | July 5 This First Friday needs no introduction. Just watch where you step as the streets and sidewalks will be covered with over 20 canvases of temporary public art. The 2013 Battle of the Band winners, Good Hours, will headline the Cleveland Avenue stage, along with Around the Block Band. And if that doesn’t color your world, check out the Sumi Ink Art project.

Get Your Walking Shoes On! Canton Arts District Art Walk series starts May 18 Get ready because this summer is filled with things to do in the Canton Arts District, including the new Art Walk series kicking off May 18.

Building on the success of six years of First Friday celebrations, ArtsinStark and the Downtown Canton Special Improvement District are excited to bring you the first installment of this year’s new Art Walk series on Saturday, May 18, with future walks scheduled for July 20 and Sept. 21.

Much like First Friday, all of the Arts District galleries, studios and restaurants will be open for business with activities, great food, fine art and live music. Each evening’s event will run from 6 to 10 p.m. and the experience is free to the public.

Want an extra special Arts District experience on one of those evenings? Don’t miss your

opportunity to get tickets to our one-of-akind VIP Art Encounters. Each VIP Art Encounter will include dinner at one of our fine restaurants, and two to three private art experiences.

he Canton Farmers’ Market returns for its tenth year

of providing fun entertainment, local flavor and freshest food around on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The Canton Farmers’ Market is a producersonly market that provides consumers with an opportunity to buy fresh, quality products at reasonable prices directly from local growers in Northeast Ohio. Along with fresh local produce, the market offers baked goods, flowers, honey, cheese, eggs and meat, and so much more!

This year’s market opens on June 22 and runs every Saturday through October 19. Our gardeners use organic gardening practices and can consume the fruits of their labors themselves or donate to charity. The garden will increase locally

grown food and help ease food costs for the residents of the Summit Neighborhood while providing a source of resident social interaction, building a greater sense of community pride and increasing personal connections.

The garden provides an avenue of access to locally produced food and engages both children and adults in food production. Bring your kids down to teach them about the complex relationship between food, health, nutrition and the environment.

New restaurants and lounges open in time for summer fun downtown

T

he winter may have been wicked, but it’s made way for tons of summer fun downtown, and several new ventures are joining our landscape in time for warm weather.

Read on for more information on some recent additions to the center city, as well as some new hot spots that will be opening soon.

OPEN NOW! Cork & Canvas on 3rd 322 Third Street NW (330) 453-CCO3 (2263) Lisa K. Sims and Kevin Hall, co-owners of the new wine lounge, Cork & Canvas on 3rd, are eager to welcome guests to their beautiful venue, featuring a wide selection of wines by the glass and bottle, along with beers and refreshing cocktails. The duo have long thought that there was a need for something more laid back downtown, and thus Cork & Canvas was born.

Specialty cocktail concoctions include the popular champagne punch (with 10 ingredients!), Marshaa’s French Kisstini, named for Sims’ daughter, and peach sangria. The lounge has happy hour daily from 4 to 7 p.m. along with daily specials, and on Wednesdays, downtown employees get a dollar off all glasses of wine.

This summer, the lounge will add small-plate tapas, and they will be open for lunch with soups, salads, sandwiches and delicious dips. Currently, Cork & Canvas on 3rd is open Tuesday through Thursday, from 4 to 11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Grapes in a Glass 575 Market Ave. N Stained glass artist, wine sommelier and educator Tamara Jorgensen is combining her knowledge of art and wine at Grapes in a Glass. Her new art-gallery-slash-winetasting-bar at 575 Market Ave. will offer wine flights to encourage people to try different varietals and educate them about different types of wine. Full bottles will be available for carry out and wine classes ranging from basic to advanced will be offered in the evenings and on weekends.

On the art side, her gallery will consist of her custom stained glass windows, along with photography that represents wineries and cellars from around the world, and a local metal jewelry designer. Interested artists should contact Jorgensen for more information about available display space.
