Utica Summit brings top industry-leaders to Canton for daylong oil and gas event Canton has become the headquarters for numerous companies working in the Utica shale play. Still others have found business homes in the townships and neighboring cities of Stark County. Furthering this interest and the excitement surrounding new energy development in Canton, the Utica Capital™, The Repository and the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce have partnered to host Utica Summit 2014 on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the Canton Memorial Civic Center. The event is presented by JPMorgan Chase. Utica Summit 2014 will be a one-day forum for high-level conversation about what is possible, now and in the future, all because of the energy being brought out of the Utica Shale and other U.S. shale plays through horizontal drilling. “Our vision is to become the place where Utica business leaders come to think about transforming the economy through shale energy,” said Dennis P. Saunier, Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce president and CEO. The event is intended to bring people together to talk about what can be done to fuel transportation across the United States with Utica energy, to build sustainable businesses powered by Utica energy, and to grow businesses that use Utica energy as their raw product to create industrial and consumer goods. Canton Regional Chamber invests in 100th year Strategic Planning process Next year, the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce will celebrate 100 years of advancing business and developing community in Canton/Stark County. In preparation for this milestone year, and to set the vision for the years to come, the Chamber is developing a comprehensive, forward-looking strategic plan to be completed later this year and implemented beginning in 2014. The five-year plan is being facilitated by David Ramey, president of Strategic Leadership Associates, based in Kettering, Ohio, and is funded by a grant from the Stark Community Foundation. l2r Power Cable Company selects Mills Business Park I²r Power Cable Company will be locating on 2.8 acres in Mills Business Park in a new, 26,000 sq. ft. facility.

The company will be the fourth business to locate in the park, joining Medline Industries, Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc. and GE Oil & Gas.
“Securing I²r Cable Company at the Mills Business Park is a direct result of the benefits of collaboration between the public and private sectors. This investment by I²r will have far reaching impacts for the greater Canton community as nothing raises the standard of living better than a good paying job,” said Dan DeHoff, president, DeHoff Development Company.
“We are delighted and honored that I²r Power Cable chose to invest and expand in the City of Canton. This collaborative success will continue to move Canton forward,” said Mayor William J. Healy II. The company’s growth plan requires the new facility, and it intends to more than double the number of employees as a result. Construction on the project is slated to begin soon. “We’ve enjoyed working with the City of Canton and Stark Development Board, as well as the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, to establish a suitable location for our new facility. City and county discuss building inspection collaboration as Chamber begins shared services effort Stark County and the City of Canton may have found an opportunity this summer to collaborate on commercial building regulation, something that the business community has been advocating for years. This development is welcome at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, which has renewed its efforts to advocate shared services between local governments. The opportunity for collaboration came when Canton Chief Building Official Angela Cavanaugh sought the CBO vacancy at Stark County government. That caused Stark County Commissioner Tom Bernabei, president of the Board of Commissioners, and Canton Mayor William J. Healy II to talk about how the city could pay the County’s Building Inspection Department to handle inspections, permitting and plans examinations for commercial structures within the city. This could eliminate the city’s need for a new CBO. City and county governments are working through the details of this proposed arrangement.

The Chamber’s new committee is being chaired by Michael E. Hanke, retired Stark County government administrator and former editor and general manager of The Repository. A select group of community leaders experienced in government is being invited to serve on the committee. It will advise the Chamber on ways the business community can encourage governments to seek efficiencies through shared services.

Journey proprietress and local artist Su Nimon recently opened her doors in the revitalized 400 McKinley Avenue building. The gallery is a creative destination for artists around the country, with new shows opening the third Saturday of each month. “Opening the gallery has been a longtime dream of mine. Now that it’s open, the response has been beyond my wildest dreams,” said Nimon. Stark Fall FotoFest promotes local tourism
The Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau (CVB) is hosting their annual photo contest as a way to encourage visitors and local residents alike to get out and explore Stark County this fall. This promotion is called the “I Stark” Fall FotoFest. The goal of the contest is for guests to visit as many of their favorite fall destinations in Stark County through Nov. 1. For each location visited and each photo submitted, the visitor will have the chance to win a $250 gas card. The CVB will award a special prize for the person who submits photos from the most destinations in Stark County. Photos can be taken indoors, outdoors, at events, and more. The goal is to showcase the abundance

ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL Sterling and McFarlane tapped as general chairs for 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and Pro Football Hall of Fame have named two long-time community volunteers to leadership positions for the 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival. The world-renowned festival will celebrate the annual Enshrinement of football players, coaches, and contributors into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
NFL/Hall of Fame Game and the First Play event. McFarlane also will lead the support committees that assist the Pro Football Hall of Fame in providing hospitality to the Class of 2014 Enshrinees, the returning Hall of Famers and their families. He is a 20-year veteran of the Hall of Fame Hospitality Committee, having served as chairman for 11 years.
Vicky Sterling, vice president of sales and marketing for Pinnacle Press, Inc., will serve as general chairman of the Enshrinement Festival activities planned by the Enshrinement Festival department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. For the fourth consecutive year, Robert J. McFarlane, director of outdoor division for Bruce Foods Corporation of New Iberia, La., will serve as general chairman of the Enshrinement Festival activities planned by the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
In addition to his volunteer work with the Hall of Fame committee, McFarlane is past-chairman of the Enshrinement Festival Balloon Classic Invitational Committee, pastpresident of Wishes Can Happen, Inc., co-founder and past-president of Jackson Township Jaycees, JCI Senator and Ambassador, included in Outstanding Young Men of America, and retired football official after 26 years. He has been very involved in Jackson Township, where he resides and has served as a volunteer fireman and was involved in the formation of the Jackson Township Police Department. He is a graduate of Capital University with a bachelor’s degree in management. He and wife Sharon are proud of daughter Kelly and son-in-law Scott.
Sterling will lead the chairmen of 26 Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce committees, who hold in excess of 350 meetings throughout the year, to attend to the massive details of planning and staging several Enshrinement Festival events. She completed 18 years of service in various leadership capacities on the Ribs Burnoff Committee, most recently as chairman in 2011 and 2012. A graduate of Louisville High School, she also served on the security committees for the Balloon Classic and Enshrinement Ceremony Committees. A past member of the board of directors for the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce, she is a past recipient of the Chamber’s Community Salute Award of Merit, and also a recipient of the Canton Advertising Federation’s Ad Person of the Year Silver Medal Award. She is a graduate of Leadership Stark County and past board member. She also extends her time and resources to the Aultman Health Foundation and Aultman Women’s Board, the Canton Blues Festival, J.R. Coleman Women in History Luncheon, and Ladies Auxiliary Post 7490. The mother of two, Sterling is married to Todd and has four grandchildren. With the 2013 Enshrinement Festival just a few weeks behind them, strategic planning for the 2014 Enshrinement Festival is already well underway. The collaborative efforts of this leadership team, combined with the professional staffs at the Canton Regional Chamber and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the dedicated team of more than 4,200 extraordinary community volunteers, will ensure the success of the One of a Kind Celebration! ABOUT THE ENSHRINEMENT FESTIVAL While nearly 22,000 men have played in at least one National Football League game, there are only 280 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame; this number will be increased by not more than seven and not fewer than four when the Class of 2014 is announced Feb. 1 during Super Bowl weekend. The central focus and highlight of the festivities will be the induction ceremony for the Class of 2014 Enshrinees, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2, at Hall of Fame Field at Fawcett Stadium. More than nine million fans have visited the Pro Football Hall of Fame since it first opened its doors on September 7, 1963, and the first Enshrinement Festival events were held that year. In the last 50 years, the Hall has expanded from its original 19,000 square feet to 118,000 square feet following the recent conclusion of its $27 million “Future 50” Expansion and Renovation Project. George Lemon, a retired business leader and long-time community activist, recognized for his ability to get things done and bring people together for positive change, will serve as general vice chairman of the Enshrinement Festival activities planned by the Enshrinement Festival department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce. And for the fourth consecutive year, Guy Ruda, sales associate for R. Z. Marketing Group, will serve as general vice chairman of the Enshrinement Festival activities planned by the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Lemon’s strong leadership skills were honed during his 23-year career as a commissioned officer, helicopter pilot and intelligence officer in the U.S. Army and National Guard; he retired at the rank of Major. He was employed for 25 years at AMETEK, a Fortune 500 company, where he held a variety of positions including vice president of marketing and sales. In the early 1990s, he started his first business, the Dele Centre, and in 1997 founded Technical Products Group, Inc., which he served as president until his retirement in 2007. He has retained his active leadership and involvement with major community institutions and organizations including life membership in the Greater Stark County Urban League. The United Way of Stark County credits George as the force behind the successful merger of the Massillon and Canton Urban Leagues. He served on the United Way board of directors, chaired the Family Impact Council, the Economics Subcommittee and the Community Recreation Center Realignment Committee, which led to a
merger of the YMCA and Catholic Youth Council Community Recreation Center. United Way recognized his achievements by awarding him the prestigious Gold Key Award in 2005. As the chairman of the board of directors at Goodwill Industries, Lemon was instrumental in a successful $5-million capital campaign to fund the Community Campus at Goodwill. As a director of the Aultman Health Foundation and Goodwill he pushed for the development of the Aultman free clinic at the Goodwill Campus. His involvement with Aultman includes being a board member of the Aultman Health Foundation, president of the Aultman Foundation Board and a member of the Aultman Dunlap Hospital board of directors. He has also served as chairman of the board of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and currently serves as chairman of the board of directors of the Stark State College Foundation. In 2003, Stark State named him Alumnus of the Year, and in 2010 he was presented with the Ohio Association of Community Colleges’ Distinguished Alumnus Award. He practices the philosophy that “giving back is not an option, but a requirement.” He and his wife Kaleen currently live in Jackson Township, and the family shares his passion for giving back to the community, as evidenced by their volunteer service and leadership in numerous not-for-profit organizations, initiatives and activities.

Why did you decide participate in the program? I decided to participate based on feedback from other alumni regarding their positive experience, plus encouragement from director Fran Wells. Describe what you learned about your leadership style during the program: That I am a collaborative leader most of the time, and that my leadership style can vary with circumstances. How have you used what you learned during the program in your career or in the workplace? The knowledge of Stark County resources, places and events has been very valuable, but also the connections that are made during the program have really expanded my impact as a leader. It is much easier to lead when you can draw on many others for ideas and insight.
service-minded. I will never see the world the same again after seeing the soup kitchen and attending the mission tour. It made me want to give back to others on a new level. Not just to give, but to sacrifice for others in need. To give of myself and of my resources for others. What nonprofit organizations do you serve and in what capacity? I serve as president of the board of directors for the Massillon Museum, president-elect for the board of directors of the Western Stark Free Clinic, and as secretary of the Canal Fulton Rotary Club. I also serve as a member of the Affinity Medical Center Healthy Woman advisory committee and have been a longtime volunteer and past president of the United Way of Greater Stark County. What is your most significant takeaway or memory from the program? The Retreat! I was surprised at my nervousness in attending the Retreat. I remember thinking about skipping it. How could it possibly benefit me? But, after the Retreat was over, I was so motivated and engaged by the leaders and my fellow class members, I couldn’t wait for our next session!
What would you say to someone considering applying to the program? Do it! Do not waste a moment thinking about it. You will learn and grow so much through the program! It is an experience you will cherish throughout your career! How have you remained involved with Leadership Stark County since your graduation? Yes! I regularly present at the Massillon Museum on Arts Day. It is very rewarding! What issues do you think future leaders should focus on? Poverty, education, obesity, access to and the provision of healthcare…the list is long. Leadership is the common thread to resolving many of our global issues and Leadership Stark County is one way to interface with many knowledgeable community leaders and future leaders. It is also a great way to hone your own skills. If we do not solve some of these problems, we leave them for our children to solve. My goal has always been to give my children a better life and I’ll bet yours is too! We can do that if we work together.
How has your experience in the program influenced your service and leadership roles in the community? My Leadership Stark County experience has certainly made me even more

Name: Cassie Ausperk Age: 24 Occupation/Title/Place of work: Donor Relations/Account Manager, United Way of Greater Stark County Why are you interested in Stark County’s Young Professionals initiative? I think it’s important to engage the young professionals in Stark County. The only way this community will thrive is if we invest in it. This is our community, too, and we should work toward moving it in the right direction. What is your impression of ystark!, what do you think of their events, etc.? I love ystark! I have met so many people through ystark! who have the same goals and interests as me. I love going to the events and seeing all of the different things Canton has to offer. Where did you grow up? In what cities have you lived and worked? I grew up in Peninsula, Ohio. I lived in Athens while attending Ohio University
for four years. After graduation I lived in Akron for two years, and I just recently moved to downtown Canton and could not be more excited. Why have you chosen to live in Canton? Working for United Way, I fell in love with the Canton community. I was already spending all of my time in Canton so the next logical step was to move into downtown. It’s amazing the amount of local leaders who are so caring and committed to seeing this community flourish, and I really wanted to be a part of that. What type of dwelling do you live in? What do you think of the housing choices for YPs in the Canton area? I recently moved into a loft apartment downtown and love it! I think the most difficult thing for me was finding somewhere affordable that was also safe and centrally located. Once I found that I started packing my bags. What do you like MOST about Canton? The diversity in Canton is amazing. There is so much art and culture tucked away downtown. I stumble upon new shops and galleries every day that I love. What do you like LEAST about Canton? Excluding First Friday, downtown is very quiet. I think people have this misconception that it’s not safe or that there is nothing to do and that’s really not the case.
to look for them. Getting involved in a committee or joining a board is such an amazing way to get informed on the needs of the community. I coach a Girls on the Run team every spring and it is such a rewarding experience. What’s missing from Canton that would attract more YPs? More affordable living in downtown. There is really something for everyone and downtown has so much to offer, but there are very few places to live. What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Canton? I attend a lot of different networking events and fundraisers for local organizations. I go to a lot of the local restaurants with my friends. Gervasi is always a great place to go on the weekend. I have also recently discovered Muggswigz. I am slightly obsessed with how amazing the coffee is. What would you change about Canton if you could? I wish downtown was like First Friday every weekend. It’s so nice to see so many people flood into downtown and support all of the local businesses. I wish more people would do that every weekend. Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Canton? If you had asked me this question two years ago I would have said no way! But after being a part of this community and working with so many local people to make it a better place, I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. What would cause you to want to leave Canton? What other cities in the United States would be appealing to you as a home base? Why? I sometimes think I would like living in a larger city like Columbus, but honestly I am very happy and content here.
What are the opportunities for YPs in Canton when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities? There are so many opportunities to get involved in Canton, you just have

SAFET Y COUNCIL Not Just Another Day On the Job | October Stark County Safety Council Luncheon The single page OSHA report for Canton’s Boyle-Midway Plant was opened in June 1987 and closed in February 1989. By signing the AC-3, the employer grants permission to the BWC to release information to the employer's authorized representative(s). The form allows a TPA to view an employer's information regarding payroll, claims and experience modification. Attention group rating prospects • Employers may complete the AC-3 for as many TPAs or group-rating sponsors they feel are necessary to obtain quotes for a group-rating program. • Group sponsors must notify all current group members if they will not accept them for the next group-rating year. STRATEGIC PL AN UPDATE (continued from cover) The Chamber has undertaken this comprehensive strategic planning process with Strategic Leadership Associates to begin the next century with a compelling vision and commitment to the issues and needs of the business sector and the Canton region as a whole. This in-depth strategic planning process involves the board, staff, Chamber members, volunteer leadership and other stakeholders throughout the community, and extends to the Chamber’s departments, including the Canton Development Partnership, Canton/Stark County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau, Leadership Stark County, Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival and ystark! The Chamber will identify and analyze key strategic priorities that will be at the core of the strategic plan. A Steering Committee of 11 members is overseeing this process and setting priorities. The effort is chaired by the Chamber’s board senior vice chairman Phil Fracassa, and led by a Steering Committee made up of current and past board leadership and community leaders, along with Dennis P. Saunier, Chamber president and CEO and the Chamber’s executive management team. “The strategic plan will help us identify the business needs of the region,” said Dennis P. Saunier, president and CEO of the Canton Regional Chamber. “It will allow us to develop appropriate leadership, initiatives and resources to meet those needs.” In its final form, the Strategic Plan is intended as a five-year plan and will guide the organization through 2018. The process includes three distinct phases: •

First, I am very proud of the work the Chamber has done in and for the business community. Our members have recognized and appreciated those efforts. Secondly, the strategic goals that are being formulated, which were derived from nine focus groups, will advance our region’s visibility, economic development, workforce and business growth. I am excited to see the end result of this plan and to begin the next 100 years,” said Karen Brenneman, chairman of the board for the Canton Regional Chamber.

BIZ BITZ The Stark Community Foundation has announced the appointment of Nancy S. Gessner to its Distribution and Board of Directors. Gessner is the director of community development at MCTV, a full-service broadband telecommunications provider headquartered in Massillon. In her role at MCTV, she oversees the distribution of corporate charitable donations and sponsorships, and performs various human resources functions. She holds a bachelor’s degree from The College of William and Mary. Currently, Gessner serves on many local boards in Stark County, including Affinity Medical Center, Leadership Stark County, the Massillon Area Chamber of Commerce, the Massillon Salvation Army, Western Stark Free Clinic and the countywide Capital Campaigns Committee. Two University of Mount Union education professors were selected to participate in a unique opportunity at Harvard University. Assistant professors of education in the Master of Arts in Educational Leadership (MAEL) program Dr. Mandy Capel and Dr. Jennifer Martin were accepted into the Harvard Graduate School of Education: Women in Educational Leadership Institute, a program aimed at bringing together a diverse group to identify leadership challenges and opportunities facing women in education today. To participate in the program, applicants were required to apply with an essay and additional publication materials. Capel and Martin joined superintendents and principals from all over the world at the conference, including representatives of United Arab Emirates, University of Calgary and Congo. The institute was led by professors of education in Harvard’s graduate school as well as Harvard professors from other disciplines. Malone University has named Stephen Weingart as associate vice president for advancement. In this role, Weingart will oversee multiple aspects of the university’s advancement operations, as well as cultivate and manage a portfolio of donor and prospect relationships. Weingart brings to this role a long history with Malone University, first as a 1988 graduate, a member and president of the university’s Alumni Executive Board and, more recently, as a member of the board of trustees. As a trustee, Weingart has served as chair of the enrollment management and marketing committee, vice chair of the board, and as a member
of the Blue Ribbon Commission on University Status. Weingart holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Malone University as well as a MBA from Baldwin Wallace College. In addition, he has completed post-graduate work at the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. Weingart has been employed by FedEx since 1988, holding positions of increasing responsibility and scope culminating in the role of global business strategist/manager, international business development since 2004. DeHoff Realtors recently held their annual awards brunch at Gervasi Vineyard, recognizing those receiving honors from the Ohio Association of Realtors and from DeHoff Realtors for outstanding customer service. JoAnn Grisak received awards in three categories, Number One Sales Associate, Number One Listing Agent and Most Units Sold. In addition, the team of Joanna Belden and Karen Belden, “The Belden Team,” was awarded the Number One Team of the Year, along with the prestigious awards for Number One Listing Team and Number One in Top Units for 2012. RETTEW vice president, Yves Pollart, has been chosen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to participate in a technical seminar on wastewater treatment and modeling for the oil and gas industry. The EPA solicited applications and selected 50 individuals to serve as experts on the topic for this seminar, coming from a crosssection of perspectives, including nonprofits, government, industry, academic and environmental groups. Pollart was chosen for his decades of expertise as an environmental engineer, including his role as the vice president of a wastewater treatment company that treats flowback and produced water to help oil and gas clients meet stringent water regulations and encourage recycling of wastewater. WRL Advertising, a full-service advertising agency, announced that Krystine Jordan has joined the organization as its newest junior account executive. Jordan will assist the WRL team in various projects. Jordan recently graduated from Walsh University with a double major in marketing and finance, and she attended Garfield Heights High School in the Greater Cleveland area. Jordan’s past internship experience includes Northwestern Mutual, Engage! Cleveland, and DAR Public Relations. Young Truck Sales, Inc., a local truck sales, parts and service dealership, has been recognized with the Above and Beyond Award from the Employer Support of the

Through the Above and Beyond Award, the ESGR recognizes employers who have gone above and beyond the legal requirements of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). This includes companies who offer extended health benefits for mobilized service members or offset lost wages. Young Truck Sales, Inc. was nominated for the Above and Beyond award by Shaun Mosiychuck, a parts department employee. Mosiychuk has worked for Young Truck Sales, Inc. for nine years while also serving in the National Guard. During 2011 and 2012, he served at the Shindad Air Base in Afghanistan.
