Three Financial Documents You Can’t Ignore

MANAGING YOUR BUSINESS’ FINANCES DOESN’T MEAN DROWNING IN SPREADSHEETS

Making time to manage your nances is part of what it takes to run a pro table business. Here are three basic nancial documents that you can’t ignore:

• balance sheet

• pro t and loss statement

• cash ow statement

By keeping these three statements up to date, you’ll consistently have a strong sense of your business’s nancial health.

According to SCORE mentor and retired CPA Frank Curtis, “These nancial statements are the keys to understanding any business. In a very precise way, you can determine if your business is growing and succeeding - or failing.”

BALANCE SHEET

Your balance sheet is a snapshot of your business’s nancials at any given moment and shows whether you are in the red or black. This statement lists your business assets, liabilities and equity. These elements together give you your company’s net worth.

PROFIT AND LOSS STATEMENT

Your pro t and loss statement, or P&L, is your income statement. It summarizes your revenues and expenses during a period of time – usually by quarter and year. This nancial statement enables you to understand how your revenues and costs impact your pro tability.

CASH FLOW STATEMENT

Your cash ow statement shows your sources of incoming and outgoing cash over a period of time. Cash ow documents are helpful when assessing performance trends and other aspects of your business that wouldn’t be as evident if you were evaluating your business only on the basis of the balance sheet or P&L.

Running a business without regularly reviewing these three nancial statements is the equivalent of driving a car blindfolded. Together, these documents give you the state of your nancial health. Without that information, you have no basis for making fact-based strategic decisions.

“If you review your company balance sheet, you can learn how much cash you have on hand, how much you owe, and how much equity you have in the business. Your annual pro t and loss statement will tell you if you have made a pro t and how much. It will also assist you in preparing your income tax return,” explains Curtis. “Good nancial statements are essential if you need additional funding for your business. Any lender will require these documents before providing additional funds.”

Setting up and maintaining your business balance sheet, P&L and cash ow statements is easier with the help of someone well-versed in business nance - like a SCORE mentor. A SCORE mentor will help

you set up and manage these three crucial nancial documents.

UPCOMING DATES TO REMEMBER ...

APPLICATIONS ARE NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR OUR SPRING 2023 SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM!

The Spotlight Program is a great option for employers to enhance leadership potential and build competencies of young professionals. The class will meet in-person from 4-6pm on six program days, over a 12 week period, from March to May. Tuition for the six sessions is $600 per person. Scholarships may be available to non-pro t organizations, entrepreneurs, and/or minority candidates. Company group applications are welcome. GET TO KNOW THE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS WHO WILL SHAPE THE FUTURE OF CANTON/STARK COUNTY! EACH MONTH, WE’LL INTRODUCE YOU TO A YP WHO IS LIVING OR WORKING, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, THRIVING IN STARK COUNTY!

Name: Megan Vance

Occupation/Title/Place of work: Site Manager, GiGi’s Playhouse Canton: Down Syndrome Achievement Centers

Age: 26

Why are you interested in Stark County’s Young Professionals initiative?

The YP initiative started as a way for me to get my foot in the door as I moved to a new city and started a new career. Now, it is helping me build more relationships both personally and professionally.

What would you share to encourage other people to join?

There’s something for everyone, whether you’re an extrovert or introvert, the standing members do a great job of making everyone feel welcome and empowering you to make meaningful connections.

Did you grow up in Stark? If so, where? If not, where did you move from and why?

I grew up in the Medina County area, then moved to Columbus for 7 years while I attended school and got my rst job out of college. After some time, I was ready to be closer to home and landed in Stark County.

Why do you stay in Stark County, from both a personal and professional point of view?

I get to wake up each day and go to the place that makes me feel my best - GiGi’s Playhouse Canton. That, and the relationships I have built, make Stark County feel like home.

What do you like MOST about Stark County?

Stark County has a strong non-pro t sector, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and help our community grow, either as a volunteer, donor, or advocate. We are the only region in Ohio to have a Special Needs Living magazine that showcases the wonderful local resources for the disability community. That, and we have one of the coolest accessible playgrounds right in North Canton!

What would you change about Stark County if you could?

A more intentional, community-wide e ort to reduce the stigma of receiving mental health services. Stark County has experienced its fair share of deaths by suicide, and while there are several mental health agencies in the area, we need to let people know that it’s okay to live below the line for a little while and seek the help that is needed, judgement-free.

What do you see as valuable opportunities for YPs in Stark County when it comes to career opportunities, cultural access, leadership or community involvement opportunities?

The ystark! networking opportunities have been a great way to meet new people and make new connections across the board. The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce does a great job of providing leadership opportunities through the Leadership Stark County Spotlight program which opens even more opportunities for community involvement.

What would attract more YPs to Stark County?

I think hosting events on di erent days of the week, inviting YPs from other neighboring cities to special events, and showing them what Stark County has to o er could entice a few people.

What do you do in the evenings or on the weekends for fun in Stark County or NE Ohio?

There’s so many events that take place on weekends that bene t some of the best causes out there!

Could you see yourself spending your lifetime in Stark County and if not, what would cause you to leave?

I plan to grow with my agency and help make the most impact on Stark County for as long as possible.
