Driving for Greater Diversity In 1964 a small group in Washington, D.C., banded to form the first chapter of SCORE - then an acronym for Service Corps of Retired Executives. They all were men and all were white. In 1980 a small group banded to form the Canton Regional Chapter of SCORE. They all were men and all were white. Not surprisingly, in the minds of many, SCORE - which dropped the acronym some 15 years ago as more members were not retired - was an organization made up exclusively of retired white men. Diversity did not appear to be a SCORE high priority. Still, although progress in achieving diversity was getting underway, the old perception endured. The Canton Regional Chapter›s most tenured member is Pat Ripple. When she joined in 2002, Pat was the chapter›s only woman. Today the chapter›s roll includes 22 women. Moreover, Pat became the chapter›s first woman chapter chair. Subsequently two more women - Liz Kral and Barb Whiddon - became chairs. Vera Burton is now vice chair and will ascend to the chair position in October 2021. When doing so, she will become the chapter›s first AfricanAmerican chair. The chapter›s treasurer is another woman, Stephanie Ferrara. In recent years, SCORE, which today numbers 340 chapters nationwide, has made increasing diversity its highest priority. In 2015 SCORE formed its Women›s Committee to promote and increase women›s participation. Pat Ripple was an original member. In 2018 SCORE created a new position Vice President - Diversity & Inclusion. Beth Shapiro of the Houston, Texas chapter holds that volunteer position. In late 2019 Beth asked Pat Ripple to join her and together they formed SCORE’s Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Committee. The committee›s overarching goal: to support SCORE Chapters’ efforts to advance diversity and inclusion in their mission to foster vibrant small business communities. One tactic is to work with each of the 340 chapters to name a chapter champion to assure keeping diversity and inclusion at

6

the forefront. Vera Burton is serving as champion for the Canton Regional Chapter. Also in late 2019, the diversity effort expanded by forming both the Hispanic Committee and the African-American Committee that its members renamed the Black American Committee to better reflect the diversity of people of color. Test initiatives to continue increasing diversity are now underway at three chapters - Canton, Pittsburgh and Kansas City. All such initiatives are taking place under the leadership of SCORE’s first woman CEO - Bridget Weston. Piece of Cake – Right? As I take the ceremonial “first day of school” picture of my daughter, I can’t help but think about how proud I am. Yes, I am proud of my senior and her low drama attitude of adapting to the changes she will encounter this school year. “I can do this Mom!” Piece of cakeright? It is a piece of cake on our end. But let me say this, I am also proud of our administrators and teachers in our Stark County School systems who have worked tirelessly to lay the groundwork to make safe learning environments. And I am referring to everyone from early childhood, to our k-12 schools and our six higher education colleges and universities in Stark County. They have spent thousands of hours this summer in keeping up with the governor’s orders, with working with the 3 health

departments in Stark County, with the extra professional development classes needed to address interactive on-line teaching, with learning to be vigilant in cleaning the learning environment and enhancing communications with their staff, students, and families. Our school administrators want to make these learning environments as safe as possible as they know, based on parental surveys, that we need our kids in school. And for those who choose on-line or distance learning, our schools are better prepared to make the experience more interactive with enhanced engagement. As I write this, the k-12 schools and higher education classes will be in session a little over a week. Fall sports and fine arts are “allowed” to move forward, of course with some added masks and required social distancing. My hope is our students continue to advance in their education with the tempo they have adapted to the

Addressing falls in construction is the reason why each year, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) holds a National Safety Stand-Down to prevent Falls in the Construction industry. OSHA encourages employers to take a break to focus on safety concerns surrounding falls from elevation. Standdown events provide employers and workers the opportunity to talk about

hazards, protective methods, and the company’s safety and health programs, goals, and expectations. OSHA’s Stand-Down webpage offers information on conducting a successful event, and educational resources. Employers are encouraged to provide feedback after their events, and to obtain a personalized certificate of participation. To learn how you can participate in the Stand-Down, visit www.osha.gov/ StopFallsStandDown.

CommQuest Services will temporarily combine Deliverance Houses I and II, starting Friday, August 14th. All women’s residential services will be provided at Deliverance House I, located on Spring Avenue in Canton. This temporary consolidation resulting from reduced referrals for women’s residential services due to COVID-19 coupled with available staffing will allow the agency to continue providing long-term, high quality care for women’s recovery services. “The Coronavirus pandemic has had many impacts on our agency, but we are working hard to ensure folks still receive the care they need at the highest caliber,” says CommQuest Services CEO, Keith Hochadel. “Referrals can continue to be made by calling 330-454-6800.” 415 Group, a certified public accounting and IT consulting firm, announced today the hiring of two new directors and a senior associate. New director Jeffrey Buckshaw joins 415 Group to manage the Audit and Assurance team and engagements to provide the utmost quality and integrity of the services performed. Previously, Jeff was the

Chief Financial Officer at Miller Weldmaster Corporation. Eric Schreiber also joins 415 Group as a director in the audit department. He has 30 years of experience in public accounting, including more than 25 years as a partner with Ernst & Young. After working for the Ohio Auditor of State and other Northeast Ohio accounting firms, Shelley Knight-Bourn joins 415 Group as an internal audit associate. The distillery at Gervasi Vineyard captured four medals in the 2020 Great American International Spirits Competition, one in each category: platinum, gold, silver and bronze, “These awards are a tribute to Gervasi’s artistic and talented distillery team and a testament to Gervasi’s commitment to excellence and to heightening the experience of our guests,” said Andrew Codispoti, Director of Winemaking & Distilling Operations for Gervasi Vineyard. “They are a gateway to future artistry and distilled spirit offerings.” Spirits entries from around the world competed in this year’s premiere competition held May 4 and 5 in Rochester, New York. More than 300 entries were evaluated by a panel of experts including master distillers, certified spirits educators, brand ambassadors, retailers, importers and spirits industry writers and consultants. Innis Maggiore, the nation’s leading positioning ad agency, today announced three Kent State University at Stark students have been awarded the Innis Maggiore Endowed Scholarship for Communications in 2020. Sara Haident, Jacob Hershberger and Taylor Vanderveen receive $1,750 each to put toward furthering their marketing and communications educations. Continuing its mission to develop solutions that will make an impact not only in the health and wellness of former NFL players, but also in communities across the country, Hall of Fame Health today is announcing a new stand-alone entity to assist in the delivery of medical care and 11 founding members of its first Medical Advisory Board. This new venture is a partnership be-

tween Hall of Fame Health and Key Benefit Administrators, the nation’s largest independent third-party benefits administrator, based in Indianapolis. Hall of Fame Benefits is launching a platform to assist former players and all others associated with the game in procuring comprehensive health insurance as well as other concierge-level assistance and services. Its services can be found at hofbenefits.com. The aim of Hall of Fame Benefits is to be a comprehensive resource, guiding every step along the spectrum of care for the greater football community. This not only includes assistance with insurance coverage, but also ensures access to care – including telemedicine and telehealth mental health services – navigation of providers, making sense of bills and helping patients in need secure financial assistance. The launch of this business comes perfectly timed with this fall’s open enrollment period only a few months away. Due to COVID-19 still within in our Stark County region and serving a more vulnerable population of senior citizens, it’s been decided to officially reschedule the Canton Senior Expo’s 30th Anniversary celebration until 2021. The event will be on the usual date each year, the first Wednesday in April, which will be held on April 7, 2021. “The decision to postpone this milestone year until 2021 was difficult, as we know hundreds of area seniors love to attend, but keeping our attendees and participants safe is our top priority,” said Dayna Yurkovich, owner of Event Day Marketing and producer of the Canton Senior Expo. “It’s been an unconventional year for so many, but know that we still have an exciting 30th Anniversary event planned! We appreciate our participating businesses working hard to continually serve our local seniors.” Aultman, the show’s Title Sponsor, also supports the decision. For more information about the rescheduled show date and to stay up-to-date, visit www.Facebook.com/CantonSeniorExpo or call 330-556-9974. Have business news you’d like to share via Biz Bitz?
