The Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors voted to award both Stark County and Columbus the opportunity to host the state football finals for two years each, beginning with the 2012 season. Stark County, which has hosted all or portions of the finals for the past 20 years and has two years remaining on the current contract to host the finals, has been awarded the 2012 and 2013 championships, while Columbus will host the finals in 2014 and 2015. As part of the motion to approve the recommendation, the Board also gave itself the opportunity to discuss option years for hosting the finals in the future.

Stark County will continue to utilize Canton Fawcett Stadium and Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium as the sites for the six championship games in a two-day format rotating between the two facilities. Columbus will host all six finals at Ohio Stadium on the campus of The Ohio State University.

helping retain and continue to grow the flagship event of the OHSAA,” said Rob Steinberg, sports promotion manager for the Canton/Stark CVB.“We look forward to a very bright future with a focused eye on the present and the perspective of the past to help us in continuing to make this the event in Stark County the first weekend of December!”

The OHSAA originally received proposals to host the state finals from groups in Stark County, Columbus, Cincinnati, Akron and Kent State, Bowling Green and Toledo. After the potential host sites were trimmed to Stark County and Columbus, members of the subcommittee visited the facilities in Canton and Massillon in Stark County on June 2 and Columbus on June 8.

“When we narrowed down our choices to the final two groups, the subcommittee felt that there was no question that both would do an outstanding job in hosting the championships and that both had a lot to offer. We feel that using both locations will give us the best of both worlds and that the real winners will be our participating schools and their fans,” said OHSAA Commissioner Daniel B. Ross, Ph.D., a member of the subcommittee.

“In Stark County, the hospitality extended to the participants and their fans is second to none and the tradition and experience they have in hosting the finals were also key factors. The subcommittee is also confident that Central Ohio has tremendous qualities of its own and that the energy and enthusiasm shown

by the Greater Columbus Sports Commission and the staff at Ohio State will help us create outstanding new traditions. So we feel providing each group the opportunity to host the games will result in a win-win situation for everyone.”

The championships were first held in Stark County in part in 1990 and entirely in 1991. Of the 190 total state football finals held in the 38-year history of the tournament, Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium has hosted the most title games (79), Canton’s Fawcett Stadium is second with 38 and Ohio Stadium is third with 37.

Harbert joins Chamber board Greg Harbert has joined the Canton Regional Chamber Board of Directors. Harbert is a vice president of Commercial Enterprise Banking for Charter One, overseeing regional sales activity in the Akron, Canton and Youngstown markets.

Prior to joining Charter One in 2000, Harbert spent five years at Key Bank, where he held the position of business banking officer in the Canton market, and 9 years at Bank One, holding various retail positions.

Harbert is a graduate of Walsh University with a bachelor’s in finance and management. He is actively involved in the community and serves as a trustee of the Stark Development Board Finance Corporation, a member of the Canton Regional Chamber Economic Development Committee, a member of the Executive Leadership Council of Junior Achievement of East Central Ohio, and as a classroom volunteer and current president of The Network. He is a graduate of the 21st Class of Leadership Stark County, past president of St. Jacob’s Cemetery Association, and past finance chair of Grace United Methodist Church.

During 2009, Harbert volunteered with the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank, Access homeless shelter and the JR Coleman Christmas Shopping Event, as well as coaching youth sports. He and his wife Lorrie have four children and reside in Plain Township.

How did you come up with the idea for your business/product/service?

Our approach to helping clients is unique. All too often in the past when a client became incapacitated or died, the estate plan did not work as the client initially intended. Things changed (family dynamics, assets and the law), but the plan was never updated. To address this problem, we implemented the LifePlan Membership Program to ensure that our client’s estate plan will be up to date year after year. We are not aware of any other local law firm that offers to proactively maintain a client’s estate plan.

Why is having a strong YP community important for your business? Every community needs strong leadership and Stark County is no different. Without strong YPs, no community will prosper or grow. YPs bring energy, enthusiasm and new ideas, which provide insight and solutions to existing issues and problems. Stark County needs YPs to replace those who led before them. No business, including our business, can survive without the next generation of leaders.

What are your thoughts on ystark!? ystark! is critical to the future of Stark County. With the demographics of an aging population, YPs will play an increasingly important role in our local community. ystark! is uniquely positioned to ensure that we develop the leadership necessary as YPs transition into leadership roles. ystark! is also blessed to have Aimee Belden at the

helm to ensure that the organization stays on course and attracts and retains the best and brightest for our future.

What advice would you give to YPs who share your entrepreneurial streak but are just getting started? Every business owner must take risks. Do your homework and understand the risks.

Once you make the leap, maintain laser like focus to accomplish your objective.

Last, don’t be afraid to fail and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. You will learn the most from your mistakes.

What’s next for you? It has been a busy year. I co-authored For Ohio Doctors: shedding light on asset protection, tax and estate planning. It is the first book to serve as a comprehensive guide for all Ohio medical professional’s personal and practice planning needs. We are now more focused on asset protection than ever before. Clients of all types (medical professionals, business owners, executives and the elderly who are concerned about the cost of long-term care and Medicaid qualification) are more concerned about preserving their wealth because of the downturn in the economy.

Which attributes best define you as an entrepreneur? The ability to identify needs within the market that are not being met, develop solutions to meet those needs and implement those solutions. While many attorneys focus on minimizing taxes and avoiding probate that is not enough. We also focus on protecting our client’s family, values and assets.

Why have you chosen Canton as your home base? My wife Whitney and I met in college. She is originally from Stark County and we have lived here together since 1995. Canton is a wonderful place to raise our three children, Bryce, Camille and Gavin. I am truly blessed to have a wonderful client base and live, work and play in a community that supports my career.

How have the amenities of Stark County contributed to your success?

Stark County has greatly contributed to my success. My partner and mentor, Lang D’Atri, accelerated my career by

Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival announces 2010 WINNERS The 2010 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival recently celebrated 47 years of excellence with a “One of a Kind Celebration” featuring 18 unique and diverse events over an 11-day period. Nearly 700,000 people enjoyed the festivities, and the following were the winners in the various competitions.

2-Mile and 5-Mile Races & 5-Mile Competitive Walk The morning’s activities began with approximately 160 youngsters (age six and under) racing to the finish line in the fifth annual Kids Fun Run. Everyone in this free, non-competitive event was a winner, receiving a race medal, t-shirt and goodie bag to recognize their participation.

Immediately following, a total of 1,691 runners and walkers were ready to get started in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival 2-Mile and 5-Mile Races, as well as the inaugural 5-Mile Competitive Walk. Julius Kipton of Toledo won the men’s division in the 5Mile event, while Mandy Farson of Massillon took top honors in the women’s division. Top winners in the 2Mile Race were Josh Benner of Canton and Carol Eckerly of Akron. A total of 43 people participated in the first annual 5Mile Competitive Walk with the top spot going to Chris Schmid of Wooster. For the fifth consecutive year Armadillo’s BBQ Company from Youngstown, Ohio, won First Place – Most Outstanding Ribs and a check for $2,500; Second Place – Mayor’s Award and a check for $1,000 went to Main Street Grille from North Canton, Ohio.

The Battle of the Bands, an integral part of the Timken Grand Parade, is open to any high school band participating in the parade. Performances are evaluated on tone, intonation, ensemble execution and musical content by three judges with extensive marching band experience, and who are not directly associated with any participating marching band.

Drum Corps International Competition Results The 2010 Drum Corps International Competition featured eight of the best drum corps in America, including five of the top twelve. This popular event was sponsored by the Enshrinement Festival in partnership with the Canton Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps and was held at Massillon Paul Brown Tiger Stadium.

Competing against Canton’s own Bluecoats were some of the nation’s top-ranked corps, including (in alphabetical order): Blue Knights from Denver, Colo.; The Cadets from Allentown, Pa.; Madison Scouts from Madison, Wis.; Pioneer from Milwaukee, Wis.; Santa Clara Vanguard from Santa Clara, Calif.; Spirit from Jackson, Ala.; and Troopers from Casper, Wyo. After winning the 2009 show for the first time in 21 years, our own Canton Bluecoats took first place again at the Enshrinement Festival competition.

Two area children have been awarded scholarships for free orthodontic treatment at the orthodontic practice of Drs. Bernard & Eimer, which serves as the local chapter of the Smile for a Lifetime Foundation. The children are Austin Grooms, 11, a sixth grader at Alliance Middle School, and Harriet Whitzel, 14, an eighth grader at Minerva Middle School. They were chosen by a local board based on malocclusion and financial need. Smile for a Lifetime Foundation is a charitable non-profit organization that provides orthodontic care to individuals who may not have the opportunity to acquire assistance.

SCADA recently added $25,000 to a $50,000 scholarship endowment it made in 2001 to the Stark State College Foundation.
