About the Rotary Community Guide

This guide is designed to put all the information you need about living in our corner of the western Poconos right at your fingertips. We’ve assembled contact information for both Tobyhanna and Tunkhannock Townships. Many residents of this area live in private communities with member associations. If you want to learn more about them, their contact information is here. You will find information about the library, and the local food bank.

Rotary believes in improving the health and well-being of the community, so we’ve added a section of walks and hikes that are close by.

Finally, these pages give you a glimpse at some of the businesses that form the basic economy of our region. They also support the many projects the Blakeslee Rotary undertakes. We hope you will support them as well, and make use of the coupons you will find at the back of this guide.

Blakeslee Rotary service projects begin here, and extend through the state, nation and world. For an interactive version of this map, visit our website, blakesleerotary.org

Our Projects

Over the years, Blakeslee Rotary has been involved in numerous community improvement projects. Members have brought their own interests to the club, and advocated for support. And a few projects and causes have been fully supported, year after year, through fundraisers and donations.

Youth Development

Blakeslee Rotary’s interest in supporting the young people of the area starts with its chartering of Cub Scout Pack 90. Educational support is the goal of the annual Atlas distribution. Every third grade student at

Tobyhanna Elementary Center is given a book of their own, that they can take home, toward the beginning of the year. For many years, dictionaries were distributed. At the suggestion of school administration, we have switched to a student atlas.

For many years, Blakeslee Rotary presented two prizes to students who were moving up to middle school from TEC the ter Muelan Award. An awards program is no longer part of the TEC school year, so Blakeslee Rotary is exploring other ways to use the ter Muelan Award to encourage girls and boys who exemplify Rotary values.

Over the years, many children Blakeslee Branch

who have played as part of the Blakeslee Little League have worn the unforms supplied through the support of Blakeslee Rotary.

Students completing their sophomore year in high school are eligible to apply to attend RYLA, the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards assembly held in the summer at Keystone College in LaPlume. Blakeslee Rotary has sponsored students who have come back full of ideas to make their schools and communities better places, equipped with tools and knowledge to make a difference.

Helping young people learn and grow is one of the prime missions of the Blakeslee Rotary. Each

year, the club selects two or three students to assist with $1,500 scholarships. Awards are based not just on academic performance, but also on present and potential community service. Selection of the recipients is a challenging task, as any student in the area served by Pocono Mountain West High School is eligible to apply. Some years, there are many deserving candidates. That’s one of the reasons Blakeslee Rotary is so grateful to its community partners, as they help local youth afford the educations that will help them succeed and go on to serve their communities themselves.

There are loads of great resources to help you discover the many facets of Rotary.

To learn about the global impact of this international orgranization, the best place to start is at www. rotary.org. Here you will see examples of Rotarians working around the world to improve the health and well-being of all people with smart, effective projects that really make a difference. It’s a great place to regain a sense of optimism and purpose featuring people working together in all parts of the globe.
