What’s new for 2022?

by Ruth Isenberg As we begin a new year, we have a choice. We can look backwards at the events of 2021, and complain. We suffered from COVID for another year. Some businesses closed. The state seemed to be piling more difficulties on our area — proposing to toll the Interstate 80 bridge over the Lehigh River, and closing the entrances to Lehigh Gorge State Park for contruction. Elections were contentious, and not everyone was pleased with the results.

Or — we can look forward with hope, building on the gains that were made in 2021. We welcomed new businesses to the downtown area of White Haven, and hope to see continued growth this year. New faces are being seated on local governmental bodies, and will bring new ideas and energy. Though COVID continues, the latest strain of Omicron seems to show that the pandemic is beginning to weaken. PennDOT is looking seriously at the effects tolling the bridges, as well as bridge reconstruction could have on White Haven, and we may see some improvements to existing problems as a result. The state park entrances will reopen to brand new facilities and better surfaces, attracting new visitors.

2022 will bring its share of problems — every year does. It will also bring opportunities for change and growth — every year does. It’s up to us to decide whether to react to the changes with welcome or with apprehension.

For the health of our communities, we say bring it on, and let’s welcome the challenges as they arise. If we can apply the right kind of attention to what’s new in ’22, we will be able to look back next year at the progress our area has made.

The flu hit The Ugly Mug basketball team of the White Haven Area Youth Basketball league, so they only had three healthy players. The Lehman team was awarded a win by forfeit, then coachs split up the teams for a friendly scrimmage, with the team led by Ed Gower — with 18 points, winning. The White Haven Lions’ team held off Suitch Insurance for a 30-25 win — the Lions were led by Mike Yarmak’s 18 points. Play resumes this Sunday.

The Storks edged H&S Suds The Christmas party of the 29 to 26 in their Wednesday White Haven Area Senior night Weatherly Youth Citizens featured a Christmas Basketball League game. Dr.

T’s Aces pulled into a tie for second place with a 27 to 23 win over Fuel Savers. In the Senior League, the American Legion team had two victories.

Weatherly Rotary remains undefeated with a 36-25 win over J&E IGA. Among the Happy New Year advertisers were David Novitsky of The Prudential, Hanna’s Ugly Mug, Philip J. Commentary by John Kearns, USCG Ret., chiefkearns@gmail.com For many wrong reasons, thousands of veterans who earned VA Benefits filed their own claims, only to be disappointed after months, or even years of waiting. For some, the claim information was too personal to share, or the veteran mistakenly believed they needed an attorney, and it was not affordable. A hard fast rule veteran service officers look to is, ‘The VA claims system is not there to help you, they are a governmental organization tasked with processing. The VA Hospital, on the other hand, is there to help you.’

Unless a veteran has had formal training in the claims process, they should never process and submit their own claim. There are two reasons

veteran claims get denied.

I want to dispel two myths.

Myth One: Veteran Service Officers do receive formal training. There are refreshers to keep them on top of the process. Veteran service officers, who do not charge veterans for filing claims, have a duty and responsibility to protect all information provided by the veteran and to protect their privacy. Myth Two: Those employed by the VA to process claims are not there to help veterans, they are administrators that process your claim under veteran laws, Title 38, US Code. Like Social Security, they work under guidelines that unless you meet certain criteria, right or wrong, you will be denied.

The third problem of filing is most veterans do not know their rights and entitlements, or the VA’s lawful obligations to veterans. After a claim is filed, one of the first things to look for is the letter they stick in the back of the bundle of forms and claim requirements. It is a letter for your service officer to look for. That letter is 38 U.S. Code §5103A - Duty to help claimants. This spells out the requirement that the VA aid the veterans

to win claims they earned. It requires by law what the duty of the VA is to ensure veteran claims are decided properly.

The law cites “Duty,” a term every veteran knows well.

Lawyers have a Duty to their Clients, so does the VA, both are subject to civil liability for failure to do their best on behalf of the client. This is condensed, (Read 38 U.S.C. § 5103A to learn more about this VA Duty): A Duty to Notify the Veteran of Information Necessary to Complete their

application. A Duty to Consider all legal theories on which the claim could be granted that are reasonably raised by the evidence of record. A Duty to Notify the Veteran of the Information and Evidence necessary to substantiate their claim. A Duty to Assist the Veteran in obtaining information at no cost to the veteran.

This law exists to help and protect veterans If you are eligible to file, use a professional service officer, their job depends on you winning.

NORMAN D. PRUTZMAN Norman David Prutzman, 75, of Bath, PA died Friday, December 17, 2021, at the Lutheran Home Hospice Care, Topton, after a year-long battle with cancer.

Born December 9, 1946 in Freeland and raised in White Haven, he was the son of the late Norman J. and Helen Prutzman.

He graduated from Crestwood High School, Mountaintop, class of 1964.

He had resided and was was employed in Ft. Myers, Florida, retiring as accounting manager with The Outrigger Hotel and Resort, Fort Myers Beach in 2011.

He is survived by two sons, Troy Prutzman and wife Deborah of Pen Argyl, and Christoper Prutzman and wife Carly of Oklahoma City, OK; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Paula Barney of Stroudsburg; half-sister Barbara Graaf and husband Lawrence of Elizabethtown; half-brother Steven Drozic and wife Carol of Lavalette, NJ; sister-inlaw Shirley Drozic of White Haven; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by twin daughters, Susan and Bonnie Prutzman; half-brother Michael Drozic; and brotherin-law Richard Barney.

In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Per Norman’s request there will be no viewing. A private graveside service and burial will take place at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, White Haven, at the convenience of the family.

Seth’s Sightings

Our landscape has now become stark, something I think of as basic winter. Except we’ve not had winter yet. Just a little snow, and a few days when our windshields had gotten frosted. Accuweather says that our winter is coming with cold these next few weeks, and snow Friday — we shall see.

We enjoyed a quiet New Years weekend, enjoying some holiday-themed videos to watch. On New Year’s Day we started listening to a book on tape of Terry Pratchett’s humorous take on a Christmas gone sidewise, Hogfather, where Santa has gone missing.

I am appreciating the Christmas lights, even as they slowly get taken down and

packed away. The colors give me cheer.

Driving back and forth between White Haven and Weatherly, I see a mix of wildlife. This week, within the fenced area of the Cloverdale tree farm, I sighted a beautiful large fox. He was watching me as I drove past.

There is a large family of fox in between a few farmers who keep chickens, and at one property, ducks. I believe I’ve seen foxes lurking near the chicken and duck property, and know that there’s a family that lives somewhere around the L&L Firehouse. This week, we heard about some coyotes out that way.

On New Years’ Day, we did some shopping though not

every store was open. Thank you to the staff that decided to work that day. I talked Ruth into letting me go into Lowe’s as I needed to stackable shelf.

She kept a close eye on me so I didn’t wander off into one of the other 47 aisles.

On Sunday, our dogs were treated to a little bit of fun at Weatherly’s dog park. Our fingers told tell us how long we can throw balls for the dogs.

As we learned last month, Bull would retrieve until he flops exhausted into the car, and then he’d have sore muscles.

We kept the pace this time a bit easier.

With hockey cancelled — the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins’ opponent for the weekend didn’t turn up due

to COVID, the weekend’s sports was all about football.

We tuned in to the Penn State bowl game, and cheered our Nittany Lions in their loss to the Razorbacks. It was fun to have them playing, but we’re hoping for a stronger team next season.

Sunday’s NFL games included an exciting victory for the Eagles, where their defense preserved their shot at the playoffs. The Steelers won, and the Buccaneers pulled off a come-frombehind victory where the G.O.A.T. Tom Brady, added three touchdowns to his records, and Rob Gronkowski had a 115 yard day. The Jaguars went to Foxborough to take on the Patriots, and barely showed up. The Pats creamed them 50-10.

Next week’s last set of regular season games should be fun. Ruth and I are still hoping for the Eagles to beat the Cowboys.

Our local Penguins get back to hockey with home games the weekend of the 14th. Makeup games for the ones that were missed will be announced and we’ll report when they get scheduled.

Opening day for the 2022 Farm Show in Harrisburg is this coming Saturday. I’m

getting extra masks (N95 and more) to wear when Ruth and I go. We hope to see the Youth Rodeo, and some of the contests, plus buy some Made In PA items. To all who choose to go, it’s still free admission — just pay for parking.

WHITE HAVEN: District Justice Ferris Webby swore in re-elected council members Bob Lamson, Harvey Morrison, John Zugarek and Zane Writer, with others who will be shown next week.

WEATHERLY: District Justice Joe Homanko swore in re-elected council members Jeff Miller, Norm Richie and Theresa D’Andrea, and newly elected Vincent Cuddeford III. DENNISON TOWNSHIP: In their rotation of officers, Sheila Weaver became chair of the supervisors, with Bruce Thomas outgoing chair and Mike Mack as vice-chair.

LEHIGH TOWNSHIP: Solicitor James Nanovic administered the oath of office to reappointed supervisor Pawlek Fiolek. Re-elected chair Larry Skinner was sworn in earlier.

EAST SIDE: New mayor Eric Siglin was sworn in ahead of time so he could administer the oath to re-elected council member Sharon Mrozinski, and newly elected members Louis Esa, Michael Best, and Joseph Lachette.

PENN LAKE: Judge Richard Hughes administered the oath of office to new councilman Daniel Eustice, tax collector Beverly Yencha, and re-elected councilmen John Burden and Paul Rogan.

“Taylor had a game. We made a couple (shots), but that press is what gets us going. That creates the energy,” stated Gavio. “That’s going to be our bread and butter.”

“The pressure was really intense,” said Hopkins, whose team finished with 28 turnovers. “We talked about reversing the ball, not getting caught in the traps. But sometimes you can’t replicate that speed in practice.

“My hat’s off to Coach Gavio and to his team. They did an awesome job, and this gives us more incentive to go back into the gym and figure out how we’re going to fix that for next time.”

Meanwhile, the pressure the Lady Cougars faced in their preseason scrimmages and strong non-conference schedule leading up to Monday had them ready for the challenge. “I feel like that pressure and that competition really prepared us for this,” Kringe said. “I feel that once we all felt the energy from everyone, and we started clicking with everyone and connecting passes, I knew we were going to win tonight.”

“It was just good to come out with a win, keep our heads up and keep the energy positive,” added Kilker.

Pasternick paced Crestwood with 10 points, Cadence Hiller added nine points, and Caporuscio made three steals and three assists to go with six rebounds. “I told them before the game that it’s conference play, and it’s going to be turned up. Everybody’s going to turn it up a notch now,” said Hopkins, whose team takes on Pittston Area on Thursday. “It’s ok to lose a game once in a while. Maybe this lights a fire under us and we come back better and stronger.”

Respect, like so many values, begins with each person.

A child must be taught respect

by being respected. Respect is also another word for obedience. If I respect, then I obey.

I obey because I respect—the rules, other persons, and myself. It involves the acceptance

of personal responsibility.

Perhaps it is too late for our culture to right itself. Perhaps the fights at the Wall tournament and the gunshots in Salisbury are our new normal. Perhaps. But I know that we can, should, and must do better.

Let us begin the new year by being polite and showing respect to one another. If we do, then we can watch the richness flow.
