During their stop in White Haven on Sunday, Gary Smith of Hackettstown, NJ, posed before his 1986 Fairmont ‘Speeder’ that was built for the Union Pacific RR. The North American Railcar Operators Association’s weekend excursion in PA had 50 speeders, and over 100 people as they made their way over two days from Pittston to Tamaqua to Reading and back. The group was mainly from the midAtlantic states, with participants from as far away as Idaho. JH: Seth Isenberg
PennDOT plan to rebuild I-80 west from White Haven online Plans for the rebuilding of Interstate 80 west of White Haven to the Route 309 exit in Drums are now online. The project rebuilds 7.5 miles of I-80 east due to Alkali-Silica Reaction failure of the existing concrete, which means the cement and aggregate are losing their bond, so ultimately the concrete fails. Fixing this means a complete pavement removal and reconstruction. The project is planned to start in the spring of 2025 and be complete by before the summer of 2030. Bridges over the Linesville Creek, over Route 309, over Nescopeck Creek/Honey Hole Road
and over Oley Creek will be replaced during the work. PennDOT says that there will be no detours required, as two lanes of traffic will be maintained both westbound and eastbound. However, all traffic will be detoured through White Haven towards Mountain Top at least once in 2025, 2026, 2028 and 2029 when structures are replaced. This detour may also be used in the event of an accident closing the narrowed highway. Online information, including the proposed detour route, detailed project information, and comment form can be found at https://www.penndot.gov/
