Vote this Tuesday

by Seth Isenberg Tuesday is primary election day in Pennsylvania. I hope that all of our local readers find the time to exercise their right and privilege to vote.

We have choices about the candidates on the statewide ballot, particularly for governor, U.S. senate and congress.

Candidates offer visions that keep our state, and our nation, on its present course, while other candidates offer up small and large changes. Selecting a real person versus one playing one role or another will be hard this time around.

On the races for state house seats, what makes this primary very interesting are the local candidates for the seat in Luzerne County. Dennison’s Andy Gegaris is on the Republican ballot, and White Haven’s John Zugarek is seeking a spot on the Democrat ballot by write-in. The position is open due to the retirement of Karen Boback. All the candidates for the 117th are quality people. For those of us in Carbon County, there is no contest yet, with Republican incumbent Doyle Heffley running unopposed, and newcomer Richard Kost on the Democrat ballot.

The Journal-Herald will not have the results until the newspaper of the 26th, but we’ll be hoping for the best including for a big turnout from our area.

High praise to those candidates who attended last week’s candidates’ forum at the White Haven Library, including state representatives Heffley and Eddie Day Pachinski, candidate for congress James Bognet (R), candidates for state representative for the 117th Gegaris (R) and Zugarek (D), Clint Lanning, Michael Stash, and Eugene Ziemba – all R, candidates for the 119th Vito Malacari (D) and Alec Ryncavage (R), and for the 121st, and Pachinski and his Republican opponent Eryn Nicole Harvey. The Greater White Haven Chamber of Commerce did good work in bringing the event together.

The facility is the successor to the Daniel Flood Medical Center, which opened in 1973.

Geisinger has operated that clinic since 1983, and has now moved in to this new set of offices (and out of the two trailer portable offices that housed the old Clinic). The facility is now the Geisinger White Haven/Blakeslee Family Practice. Clinic physicians are doctors Gregory Fino and Ed Stachowiak.

Obituaries JOHN T. WARGULA SR.

John T. Wargula Sr., 69, of White Haven, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at the Mountain Top Health Care Center.

Born in Hazleton, he was the son of the late John and Carolyn Ann Maughan Wargula.

Prior to retiring, John worked as a heavy equipment operator in local stone quarries.

He loved music, the Phillies, Eagles, Penn State football and most importantly, his family.

John was a member of the Laborers’ Local Union 158.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents, were an uncle, Jack Maughan; and a cousin, David Maughan.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Bailey Wargula; a son, John T. Wargula

Jr.; a brother, Thomas Wargula and wife Joan; nephew, Thomas Jr. and wife Angela; great-nephew, Noah Wargula; great-niece, Addison Wargula; aunt, Lorraine Carter and husband Richard; and cousins, Beverly Davis, Bill Carter, Brenda Schmaeling, Bonnie Seaman, Brent Maughan and Diane Bonfitto.

The family is grateful for the excellent care he received at Mountain Top Health Care Center and for the caring staff of R&L Helpmates, especially Tracey and Luna.

Funeral services were held May 11 in White Haven United Methodist Church.

Marian J. Detweiler, 88, of White Haven passed away Saturday, May 7, 2022 suddenly at her home. She was a resident of White Haven most of her life.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, White Haven. She was employed at New West Wreath Factory, Freeland, and American Cigar, Mountain Top. She enjoyed going to casinos, especially in Atlantic City, along with crossword puzzles, bingo and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Detweiler Sr.; siblings, Ronald Mensinger, Jeanette Carter, Eugene Mensinger and Barbara Perhonitch; and grandson, Michael Detweiler.

Surviving are her sons, Allen Jr. and wife, Bonnie, White Haven; David Sr. and wife, Alice, Bloomsburg; Larry and wife, Mary, Sellersville; grandchildren, Allen III and wife, Erica Detweiler; Ryan and wife, Jennifer Detweiler; Joshua and wife, Aimee Detweiler; David Jr.; Ashley; Drew and wife, Casandra Detweiler; Lauren and husband, David Wilson; and Alyssa Detweiler; siblings, Byron Mensinger, Bloomsburg; Geary and wife, Becky Gueiss, Freeland; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held May 10, followed by burial in Laurel Cemetery, White Haven.

WHITE HAVEN PRE-MEMORIAL DAY GATHERING 2022 This year’s annual parade and gathering are set for Sunday, May 29th. The event kicks off with a parade through town ending at Lehigh Park. At the park, there will be free hot dogs and draught birch beer, concession stands and entertainment, plus different vendors will be selling various wares and handmade products.

Each year there are accurate historical military displays and miniatures open for viewing and the history of each presentation. It is a festive occasion for everyone and provides the first official town event for everyone to gather.

The Poppy King and Queen will be crowned at the park. The red poppy, or Remembrance Poppy, has been

a symbol of lives lost to war since World War I (1914– 1918), and Memorial Day poppies play a big part in the history of Memorial Day. Sales of red poppies benefit veterans’ associations and fund many charities and veterans’ causes. During World War I, the poppy was worn in many Allied countries, including Great Britain, France, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States..

While held on Memorial Day weekend, it does not distract from the true meaning of Memorial Day itself but does carry reminders.

The parade floats often symbolize the patriotism and service of the veterans of our armed services, our police, and first responders. Some

symbolize our youth and community organizations or pay tribute to our community in things we all share.

SCUTTLEBUTT: FIRE DRONES There are unverified reports of many home and structure fires starting throughout Russia; it is also being reported that Ukraine is using Fire Drones, tiny drones that fly into structures, attics, and under roofs and ignite, setting the structure on fire. While unverified, these weapons exist, tiny electronic drones that seek small entrances into buildings unseen, then spontaneously burst into flames.

on timers. When the bats flew down and crawled into crevices in wooden buildings they could set towns on fire. This did not work well; many bats froze to death being let loose at high altitudes. However, the ones that survived did set whole towns ablaze.

Their electronic counterparts have the same capability. No larger than a bumblebee, they can be dropped at any altitude and follow their program to enter buildings, hide dormant, and burst into flames. History does repeat itself, just in a more modern way.

ESU confers 1,021 degrees at May 8 event A total of 1,021 students received degrees from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania at a commencement ceremony on May 8 at Eiler-Martin Stadium. A total of 800 bachelor’s degrees, 214 master’s degrees and seven doctoral degrees were awarded.

Fall 2021 graduates, whose degrees were conferred in December, were inviting to participate in the ceremony.

Among those graduating were Christina Caravella of Weatherly, Michael Legg of White Haven, and Molly Snyder of White Haven.

RIVER ROAD in East Side was closed again over the weekend, after a dump truck caught the edge of the roadway on Friday around noon and ended up crashing through the guiderail, down the bank and into the Lehigh River gorge.

Vendors and crafters spots open for 2022 Weatherly Festival The Weatherly Festival Committee is now accepting vendor applications for the upcoming festival to be held on August 26 and 27 at Eurana Park.

This year’s festival will feature the following bands: Friday, August 26, 6-9 p.m., The Legends Saturday, August 27, 1-4 p.m., Polka Band 5-9 p.m., North of 40 This year will feature a mechanical bull ride. The bounce houses will be on Saturday only. As always there will be tricky trays and various vendors providing food, games, crafts, and items for sale during the entire event. The festival draws people of all ages and is very well attended.

There is a large interest in spots for the craft vendors and spots cannot be held without payment. All applications must be received by July 31.

Just as we came up on the campground at Hickory Run State Park, out pops a quail, forcing Ruth to slow the car. “There’s your bear,” I said, and she laughed.

As I’m not feeling well due to chemotherapy treatment, I rode shotgun for a trip to Blakeslee and Albrightsville. I asked if Ruth would be okay for her to drive up Meckesville Road toward the PA Gamelands because I’m curious about some of the early flowering plants that appear just for a few weeks in late spring. As we drove past the pavement and onto the gravel road we looked and saw none of the particular plants we remembered

from last year, but also saw a lot of green leafy starts that could become what we were seeking. We’ll need to come back in about two weeks.

Ruth chose to continue driving to the end of the road, which becomes dirt towards the end. We found the gate open to the road into the Gamelands.

Never ones to turn down an adventure, we drove in, noting that the sign posted there explained that the gate will be open until early June.

We drove up the southbound road and found that there was another gate where the state Gamelands end and the State Forest begins, just past the little wood sign that marks the border between Carbon and Monroe Counties.

We returned to the junction and went off along the next road which heads straight east. We’d walked this road before, but this

We drove up, and up some more, noting that the rain had begun to turn to sleet.

There was not a lot to see, mainly a mix of hardwoods beginning to sprout their buds, but it was starkly beautiful.

There’s a special joy to knowing you’re the only people for over a mile in any direction.

If the weather had been better or the hour was earlier, we might have chosen to drive farther though we were concerned that we might encounter another barrier at the State Forest boundary.

I know the road goes all the way through to Route 115 just south of Pocono Raceway, but don’t know whether the open Gameland road means open all the way.

We’ll try to find out.

Passing by the campground at Hickory Run State Park, we sighted folks who had brought their campers there. Some sites had campfires going. Our car’s thermometer read 38° with time for the temperature to drop further — and it was sleet-

ing. It was going to be a cozy night camping near their heaters.

Our big ‘do’ this weekend was the WBS Penguins two playoff hockey games, Friday and then Monday. These were good times, made better in that our team won both games and is now moving on to a best of five series against one of the best teams in our division, the Springfield Thunderbirds, the St. Louis Blues affiliate. We sighted some White Haven locals at each of these games and will look for them these next games as well.

The local Penguins will play at least one more home game in their best of five games series versus Springfield. The first two games are in Massachusetts, then on Sunday afternoon, the teams play in Wilkes-Barre with puck drop at 5. If we win any of the first three games, there’s another game here on Monday at 7.

At home, our lilacs are about to bloom, our cherry trees are in bloom, and there are apple blossoms starting.

our first trip to Knoebels as part of the WVIA members contingent. We’ll be there early Sunday afternoon with our dogs for some rides and fun. Later, we’ll head to Wilkes-Barre for the Penguins game.

On Saturday, I plan to take it easy, do some yard work, and later catch up with some old friends. It finally feels and looks like spring — lawn work being the result, and a reward.

Zachary Bresnak, son of Bill and Tara Bresnak, Weatherly, has been named Senior of the Month for April at Weatherly Area High School.

For the second year in a row, Rose Diel, has com­ pleted the “How to Get to Sesame Street” Chal­ lenge by representing Standard Farms. This is a challenge to walk 500 miles in one year to ben­ efit the Sesame Work­ shop, a nonprofit which helps kids grow smarter, stronger, and kinder.

Cranberry Quilters open membership drive The Cranberry Quilters will be hosting a membership drive beginning May 8 and running through May 23, which is the date of the group’s May meeting. A local quilt guild for many years, the group offers enjoyment and information on many types of quilting from basic beginning skills to hand and applique technique and modern quilting styles. New members need not be proficient in any quilting style or specific sewing talent.

Existing members are also encouraged to invite a friend to the May meeting. The year is filled with interesting projects, an upcoming

quilt show extravaganza, and speakers that engage with the group on all levels. Poppy Walk slated in Weatherly In conjunction with National Poppy Day, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 360 in Weatherly will conduct a Poppy Walk on Saturday, May 28. Registration for the event will take place at the post home starting at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $10.

The walk will start at 10 a.m. rain or shine unless there is extreme weather.

All registrants will begin at the post home and continue to the Weatherly Plaza which is approximately one mile. Participants will have choice of a one-, two-, or threemile distance walk. Children younger than 18 years of age must be registered by a parent. Children younger than 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult during the walk.

Monetary donations are also welcome from non-walkers. All monies received will be used by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 360 for their programs that support veterans, the military community, and their families. The Crestwood boys and Dallas girls left Wright Twp. with one-sided victories, each taking a huge step toward their respective division titles.

The Crestwood boys overwhelmed Dallas 111-39, and were in position to clinch the title and an unbeaten season outright with a win at Berwick on Tuesday afternoon. Details from that meet will appear in next week’s edition. Meanwhile, the Dallas girls eased to a 92-58 win, handing the Lady Comets their first loss and dashing their division title hopes.

The Crestwood boys and girls also competed in a WVC meet last Wednesday, sweeping past Wilkes-Barre Area.

Boys

Crestwood 111, Dallas 39 - The Comets surrendered just three firsts on the day, and overwhelmed the visiting Mounties to improve to 5-0. The Comets swept the 100, high jump, long jump, shot put, and all three relay events to win going away.

Ethan Shudak bolstered the Crestwood field men with firsts in the shot put, discus and javelin. Nick Coniglio was first in both hurdles events, and also won the long jump.

Meanwhile, Adam Wood (triple jump, high jump) and Nolan Dunnum (100, 200) each won two individual events, and were part of the winning 400 relay team.

Wood cleared 6-foot-5 inches to capture the high jump in one of the day’s top individual performances.

Crestwood 123, Wilkes-Barre Area 27 Mia Pollack (javelin, shot put), Sarah Shipton (high jump, 200), Maddie Carmichael (triple jump, long jump) and Molly DeMarzo (1600, 3200) all had multiple wins to lead Crestwood over Wilkes-Barre Area in a WVC contest last week.

Esabella Mendola swept the hurdles to lead the Wolfpack.

Dallas 92, Crestwood 58 - The Lady Comets managed just six firsts Monday afternoon as Dallas got three individual wins from Filali in the 100, 200 and 400. Molly DeMarzo was her steady self, winning the 1600 and 3200 to lead Crestwood (4-1). Julia Lazo cleared 12 feet to win the pole vault; Mia Pollack claimed the shot put; and Kayla Kresge won the 100 hurdles, and was on the winning 400 relay team.
