Ready, Set…
by Seth Isenberg
I am ready to start whatever the new normal is to be, but I’d like to buy a haircut first. On my list high up is to go to one of our fine local restaurants and dine in to enjoy the meal, and service — socially distanced. Then I want to find some live entertainment and sit back and enjoy — again at least six feet apart. Being cooped up, there’s evidence that stresses are building among family members, and that’s also bad for people’s health, mental and physical. I’m sure that nearly all of our readers are raring to get out to get back to normal including for their health — not to risk it. My “nearly all” is to take into account those of us who are, or are caring for, vulnerable seniors. Ruth and I are NOT taking my 95 y/o uncle out to a concert or sporting event, but will go out to a safe dinner at a restaurant as soon as we are allowed. Carbon County moves to the Yellow Alert phase this Friday. It’s not a big step towards freedom, but it’s progress. True progress was when Governor Tom Wolf declared that realtors can once again be working — using safe COVID-prevention practices. True progress will be allowing restaurants to find ways to reopen safely for their customers and staff. There are many more good people wanting to hear that their small and medium-sized businesses may also return to work — using those same practices. While it’s unfortunate that the Philadelphia, New York and North Jersey areas are lagging in their COVID19 fight, let’s not delay getting our tourist region open at least at 25 to 50%. The Journal-Herald area and the nearby Poconos really depend on visitors, and our people need to work.

Claire Freund, a senior at Crestwood High School, was second runner-up. In the Democratic Primary in Carbon County for governor, Robert Casey defeated Milton Shapp 2,845 to 2,306. Lausanne supported Shapp 6 votes to 1, Packer also went for Shapp, 44 votes to 38, while Weatherly gave a 35 vote edge to Casey, 121 to 86. With a budget balanced at $756,480, the Weatherly Area School Board adopted the 1970-71 budget on a vote of 7-2. The new budget is $70,016 higher than the 196970 figure. PPL advertised an independent electric baseboard heating unit — no pipes or ducts. The Weatherly Police led by chief Andrew Pecile held their annual bicycle inspection. More than 150 youngsters appeared at Eurana Park. The Weatherly Area High School softball team went to KisLyn to compete against the Job Corps’ team. Things were close at the beginning, with the Keystone Job Corps team slowly pulling away before a fifth inning where the home team scored a record 32 runs. The end of the contest showed the home team with 93 hits, and 71 runs, to the visitors 35 hits, and 7 runs. (A writer’s note: Job Corps would have mostly college-aged girls.) The Weatherly golfers won their last match, defeating Freeland 11-4 in a rain-short-
ed 12-hole contest at White Birch. The win gives them an 8-4 record, good for second place in league standings. A photo on the back page, with the sports news and Garber column, shows the six member golf team featuring Suitch brothers Dan and David, with coach Charles Murray. Knoebel’s Groves in Elysburg invited families to come to “Take a One Day Vacation This Sunday.” From the Sidelines, by Don Garber The boys baseball team lost their final game 10-6 versus Jim Thorpe, depriving them of a tie for first place with Tamaqua in the Southern Division. Larry Gerhard ended the year with a .395 batting average, with Barry Knepper close behind at .375. The U.S. Department of Interior released figures showing that Pennsylvania had the highest number of hunters in 1968-69, with 1,102,749 paid hunting licenses. Next closest was Michigan with 918,175. Weatherly okays delaying tax penalty by Seth Isenberg
Weatherly Borough Council met at noon this Monday in a mixed meeting, part socially distanced and part by telephone. Present were three council members, mayor P. J. Hadzick and three staff, plus this reporter. By phone were three more council members and an audience of a few individuals. Bills of $119,752 were approved for payment. Nearly half of those were invoices for insurances. The General Fund shows income for April was $33,693, a transfer was made into the general fund of $95,000 from the electric fund checking account, and expenses were $149,391. Council approved a resolution that postpones the penalty period for paying borough property tax and the per capita tax until October 31. Taxpayers will now be able
to pay the face value of the tax through October — a three month extension. The 10% penalty period is pushed back to start on November 1. Council also approved a resolution to borrow $750,000 from Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank at a rate of 1.9% to help with cash flow ahead of when taxes come in, and grants arrive. No one made any public comment when that agenda item was reached. The Police Department reports 177 incidents in April. Police wrote 20 traffic tickets, and filed four criminal charges. Eighty dollars in parking tickets were collected. There are 196 pending court cases. In manager Harold Pudliner’s report, residents are reminded garbage pickup after
Memorial Day will be Tuesday, May 26. Another reminder about pickup — the garbage hauler will not be picking up large bulk items until the pandemic has passed. The Memorial Day parade and ceremonies by American Legion Post 360 are cancelled due to the Corona virus, but the Post will hold a ceremony to salute the dead at local cemeteries this Sunday, May 24. The Community Yard Sale has been cancelled for this year. Eurana Park’s concession stand at will open starting June 2, serving hot dogs and hamburgers and other favorites for take-out service from the window. The next Weatherly Council meeting is June 15, at a time to be announced.

A Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
(Never known to fail) O most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful Vine Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in this my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity; there are none that can withstand your power. O, show me herein you are my Mother. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (say 3 times) Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands. (say 3 times) Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, who lights all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. After the 3rd day, the request will be granted, no matter how difficult it may be. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Continued from page 4 given, and whether he was included in discussions. This continued through the rest of the meeting. Other items included the ratification of a contract amendment with Rohrer Bus Service where the bus company picked up the cost of installing 2-way radios in all their Weatherly vans and buses, about $8,000. Member Shay McGee will be treasurer again from July through next June, and she waived the $500 stipend that comes with the post — to the thanks of other board members. Pushing off the beginning of the tax penalty period on school taxes was discussed,
and tabled. The board will need to decide by the June meeting on the 17th so bills can be printed. An idea was floated to look at providing free breakfasts and lunches to students. Running the numbers by business manager Natasha Milazzo, she said this year’s numbers came in about ‘break even’ and the free meals could take it to a $10,000 loss, but she explains that the district can apply for aid. Bills were approved, with checks from March, April and May totaling $1,950,143 from the general fund, $6,031 and $408,591 from the GO Bond account, and $55,667 from the cafeteria fund. Another budget meeting is set for May 21 and then again on the 27th, on the internet.

Seth’s Sightings

Sheltering at Home It has been a quiet week, in part due to a heavy work load that included a series of community and board meetings to attend via the Internet (and one socially distanced). We even attended worship via Zoom on Friday night and Sunday. With this newspaper complete, we have three more to do by Saturday, and a fourth, something new for a customer, under construction. Last Saturday was Armed Forces Day, and we took Slater to an event held by Mission BBQ in Wilkes-Barre where veterans gathered for a ceremony and the singing of The Star Spangled Banner. As a WWII Navy veteran, he was given a round of applause from the mix of other veterans who attended. We stayed to enjoy take out, and ate outdoors in nice spring weather, at tables out-
side in front of the restaurant. It wasn’t dining out, but it was out. After the event, which wrapped up just after noon, we went on a drive with him to the Frances Slocum State Park, and then went shopping to resupply his refrigerator. He’s eager to see the end of the crisis, wanting to be able
to dine inside a restaurant – and we agree. The rest of the afternoon we used for the planting of some ornamental Hostas, and trimming and mowing of grass that had grown high enough to obscure the pinks and other spring flowers. The next morning, we saw that the Hostas had been eaten by deer, one plant even pulled up. Our decision was to move the Hostas into the fenced back yard to plant them again, and replace them with deer resistant flowers to put into the holes. We went to Detweiler’s Farm near White Haven and bought replacements, and had these in right at dusk. As of Tuesday, the plants are all happy in their

The new sites at the ‘Infield RV Park’, located inside the track, allow the ultimate camping experience of staying in the very spots NASCAR drivers stay during the annual
races. You will have access to two playgrounds, bike and scooter trails and a dog park, all within walking distance to your campsite. ‘Long Pond Campground’ is the off-site location, only minutes down the road from the track. Enjoy the outdoor pool and newly renovated amenities like the outdoor lounge area, indoor lounge and game room. Guests have access to both campground amenities. Together, choose your campground experience in the beautiful Pocono Mountains and at a NASCAR track. In partnership with local busi-
nesses, Pocono Raceway also offers convenient organic food purchases from Pocono Organics, ATV Tours through Pocono Outdoor Adventures, Slingshot Rentals, StockCar Racing Experience and more. All campgrounds will follow all protocols set by the CDC guidelines and state officials. For the safety of patrons, certain amenities and facilities will be closed until they are permitted to open. If you have any questions email campground@poconoraceway.com and a camping specialist will get back to you.
new locations. Sunday afternoon, we tuned in to MRN radio to listen to the NASCAR race at Darlington via the internet since this area has no over the air affiliate. It was nice to hear the sports call. It’s now time to get ice hockey back underway, before they end up playing through the summer. Looking at this holiday weekend, we’re working. It might have been a chance for us to go on an overnight if this was a normal May, or a day at Knoebels people-watching. Knoebels is waiting on Columbia County to get into the green before opening. Pocono Raceway is waiting to learn if NASCAR will keep their two-race weekend date in late June, or move it. Weatherly’s spring Hillclimb is canceled so there we must wait until the fall event. The Weatherly Area Library auction and tricky tray has pushed off their late June date, with hopes for a fall date. The earliest events on our radar are the Celtic Fling in Mt. Hope, Lancaster County, which is stubbornly hanging on to its June 26 to 28 week-
end. We’re eyeing various July events with some hope, and believe that things should be green by the time Musikfest rolls around in August in Bethlehem, and the PA Renaissance Faire, also in August, in Mt. Hope. Happy news is that crops are such that our CSA membership at Detweiler’s Farm will begin to provide us with fresh-grown local produce soon. An amazing auto item is that our ancient Subaru is turning 220,000 miles, of which over 80k of those are ours. The old thing – a hard used work vehicle built about 15 years ago – has been good to us. Now it’s babied, needing extra oil and coolant, but still running. It’s going to go into light use when temperatures exceed 80, held in reserve for next winter. To veterans, and families of veterans, The Journal-Herald will have photos of local Memorial Day ceremonies, and live-stream some observances. Another oldster, seven-time series champion Jimmie Johnson, appeared poised to take the checkered flag before crashing with Chris Buescher just a half-lap before the finish line, handing the race over to Kevin Harvick. For Harvick, who had led 159 of 293 laps, it was his 50th career victory, matching Hall of Famers Junior Johnson and Ned Jarrett. Alex Bowman finished second and remained behind Harvick, who are 1-2 in the point standings heading into what will be four races in 11 days broken up between Darlington and Charlotte. The drivers were supposed to compete at Darlington on Wednesday and at Charlotte Sunday for the Coca-Cola 600. A second Charlotte race will follow on Wednesday, May 27. Dates at Bristol, Atlanta, Martinsville, Homestead and Talladega -- all without fans -- are scheduled from May 31 through June 21. Races are being broadcast on Fox and FS1.
The big question now is whether or not fans will be allowed to attend Pocono Raceway’s first-ever double-header weekend, slated for June 27-28 at the Long Pond superspeedway. Late last week, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf said he had conversations with NASCAR officials and told them the state is not ready to make a decision. “The area that they want to have this gathering in (Monroe County) is actually in the red right now, red zone, red phase,” Wolf said, “so I told them Pennsylvania is not

Vettel’s departure from Ferrari prompts major shuffle in Formula 1 by Mark Gero

With Daniel and Lando as teammates, I believe we’ll have two racers who will continue to excite our fans and help the team grow.” With those moves now in place, Renault is now at the center of speculation regarding who join Esteban Ocon in 2021. Vettel’s name is on that list, along with Fernando Alonso. If neither driver ends up with Renault, speculation is that the French company may end up taking a driver from its young driver’s
academy. And if that happens, Renault will end up with two young drivers instead of an experienced-younger team. No matter how the Renault situation ends, fans’ eyes are riveted on the start of the 2020 F1 season. F1 CEO Chase Carey announced recently that the earliest possible start is the Austrian Grand Prix, which is scheduled to be run on the first weekend in July. Caporuscio, Comets left their mark as area’s best-ever boys’ lacrosse team by Steve Stallone Sports Editor Not a lot of high school seniors these days listen to 1970s vinyl, are self-taught on the guitar, and have already started their own lawn care business. Talking with Mountain Top’s Anthony Caporuscio, you learn quickly that he’s not your typical 18-year-old. “I’m very fixated on the 70s culture. I love to watch That 70s Show, that’s probably my go-to,” Caporuscio said without hesitation. “I have a huge vinyl collection. I like to listen to my vinyl records all the time: Zeppelin, The Who, Skynyrd, all that stuff. I’m a big music guy. I taught myself guitar last June and I’ve been playing ever since. I love it.” Caporuscio also sets himself apart on a lacrosse field. When he’s there, he’s simply one of the best. We definitely had some high aspirations, some high hopes.” A fourth straight district championship and a deep state tournament run — perhaps all the way to the cham-

pionship — was what the Comets’ sole focus was leading up to the spring. Imagine the disappointment when their final high school lacrosse season was first suspended, and then cancelled altogether when the coronavirus pandemic took hold in Pennsylvania. The governor’s stay-athome order closed the schools and halted all non-essential travel. It also stopped the 2020 spring sports season before a game was ever played. “The very first time they postponed it, so to speak, it was tough to hear that because me and all the guys had been working our butts off all year in the offseason,” Caporuscio said. “I just got back from See CAPORUSCIO, page 14
