After a welcome by board of trustees president Lois Hammer, Carter explained how the park came into being. About five years ago, she got a call from a family wanting to make a donation to the library. When she met with Bill and Barb Remaley, she said she really didn’t know what to expect. She was delighted when they called back, wanting to make a generous donation to improve the grassy area to the south of the engine house. That idea fit right in with the vision established through community input back in 2014, and with
help from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, funding was now available to create a park via the competitive Keystone grant program. Carter credited Christine Himmler, a landscape architect with Reilly Engineering, for being an excellent listener and possessing a creative imagination. Her guidance led to the layout of flowering plants and green features that grace the space. Help came from local sources, like White Haven Borough and the library’s own garden club, and from
Senator John Yudichak and Representative Jerry Mullery for more funding. Expect the space to be busy. A concert will be held in the park on June 15. A summer kid’s program is scheduled in conjunction with the Wilkes-Barre YMCA. An outdoor movie screen has been purchased, and there will be books sales and other activities throughout the summer. “We are not done yet,” Carter concluded.
