Talking taxes

by Seth Isenberg It looks like both the Crestwood and Weatherly Area School Boards will approve tax increases this fiscal year.

While these increases will add to the financial strain being caused by inflation, the key point about both districts is that the boosts are not taking the highest amount allowed by PA law. Weatherly is looking for a modest 1.1 mill jump, and Crestwood’s increase is about .28 of a mill. The difference in the size of the taxes relates to the difference in tax bases in each district.

The Weatherly Area is fortunate to have gained a big new taxpayer, allowing the tax increase to be low. Crestwood continues to see robust growth in new homes and businesses, meaning a lot of new taxpayers to pick up the burden.

While each district will need to dip into its fund balance to cover all expenses, the future looks bright for both. More new businesses are on the way, and more people are moving in.

So — a quick thank you to both boards for passing modest increases. I believe it is better to do little increases more often, rather than wait past the time that big increases become necessary.

And as a related note, if Kidder Township gets another two or three warehouses, the Weatherly Area School District may have level taxes through the end of this decade and possibly through the next as well.

GERALD A. BALUTA Gerald A. Baluta, of Scranton, formerly of Mountain Top, died on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 in Gino Merli Veterans Center.

Born in Fairmont Township, he was a diamond driller for Certain-Teed in Mountain Top. He was a former member of St. Jude’s Church, Mountain Top and served his country proudly in the United States Army Air Corp, where he was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine, and siblings.

Weatherly Area School Board to vote on ’22-’23 budget with tax increase

by Seth Isenberg At a special meeting to be held this June 15, the Weatherly Area School Board will vote on the 202223 budget. At May’s voting meeting, the Board okayed a preliminary $15,754,839 with a 1.1 mill tax increase to cost about $41 per household. The budget, however, was underfunded even with the tax increase, but there were other possible income streams not possible to put a number to then.

A month later, the Board, with Robert Kachurak, CPA, as the District’s new business manager will be voting on a budget to take the District through the next school year.

At the June 8 regular voting meeting the WASB approved the list of graduating students, approved a new designation for Leann Miller as Assistant Business Manager effective July 1, approved the contract language for business manager Kachurak, and approved having Kachurak pay all bills during July as the board holds no official meetings in July. All July expenses will be on the August meeting agenda for ratification.

Vice-principal Chris Kimmel gave the administration report, remarking that the “graduation went well.”

Work is now underway to update all the handbooks for

the 2022-2023 school year.

The Board acknowledges tenure for Tiffany Bobeck, Elementary/Middle School Guidance Counselor, Jessica Radjavitch, Teacher and Jeanna Genetti, Teacher, as recommended by Superintendent Daniel Malloy, for having completed three successful years of teaching with satisfactory ratings.

Approved to use school facilities are Lady Wreckers Volleyball for conditioning, starting June 25; the Weatherly Recreation Basketball Camp from June 13 to 17; and Citizens Volunteer Fire Company to use the district’s parking lot on August 27 for parade parking.

The Slusser Law Firm was approved to collect delinquent school taxes for 2022.

May’s bills of $723,375 were paid from the general fund, and $45,582 from the cafeteria account.

The paving contractor still has not returned to finish the work left incomplete in 2021. The Board met in executive session with paving project engineers from Brinkash & Associates.

The meeting ended with a discussion with facilities chief Bill Moyer about projected repairs and equipment replacements that could need resources in the upcoming budget, or be put off to next year. Among the topics were that the District’s dump truck and plow

is over 20 years old and will need repairs, but more likely, should be replaced. The oil tank behind the elementary school has water in it, and will need to be vacuumed out – which will also clean any sludge out.

There are issues with the heating systems in both buildings. One or two pumps will need work, or replacement. One of those dates back to the 1960s when the elementary school was built.

Parts for the old units are hard to come by. There’s water getting in between the coils of one of the heating units. An upgrade to a zero-turn mower was mentioned – the District doesn’t own one.

The Board will look this all through, and will likely have additional questions.

Discussion over both the June meetings included the drainage work to fix the water accumulation on the west soccer field and the runoff onto the neighbors’ properties. The somewhat steep cost of the work has members also wanting to know what the cost would be to handle the water issues on the east field.

After the June 15 special meeting, there are no regular meetings scheduled until the caucus meeting on August 10, and voting meeting on the 17th.

VNVLVMCPA is quite a long abbreviation, but what a great group of military veterans and supporters. Last week they roared into White Haven on a mission. The full name is Viet Nam Veterans Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club of PA. The group originated in Texas and currently is the largest all-military club in the world.

The membership is formed by active duty and veterans of all branches and eras. Their visit was the continuance of their base mission, to stand with and support all veterans. Their moto is “We served together; we ride together.”

The mission here was to raise money for our area veterans’, and what a great job they did.

Their small group did a big mission completing a successful fundraiser with proceeds turned over to White Haven VFW. In meeting with them, the colorful names like “Tank” and “Blacktop’ stood out. In the light of good-natured fun, what was very impressive was the group’s seriousness in complet-

ing the mission at hand. They worked with military precision, ensuring all details were addressed and did this while enjoying themselves.

Here were veterans working hand in hand representing all eras of service and conflict, male and female, in a tight group to get a job done.

Last Wednesday was Wings and Whiskey bike night at Tavern on the Trail in White Haven. All the funds raised on Wednesdays this summer are divided and donated to a different charity each week. Recipients vary, such as the Valor clinic, White Haven VFW, or Immediate Needs - going to a family in crisis. The other half will go towards Operation Zero, a fund to assist veterans in getting the care they need, housing, etc.

A Bravo Zulu to all members of VNVLVMCPA, the Tavern on the Trail, and everyone who comes out to support this worthy cause. SCUTTLEBUTT: BRAVO, ZULU is a Naval signal conveyed by flag hoist,

More Scuttlebutt: The first flag of our nation was The Gadsden Flag, named after the American general and politician Christopher Gadsen, who designed it in 1775 during the American Revolution. This is one of the first flags American ever flown over American soil. The symbolic snake, a timber rattlesnake, is found in the original Thirteen Colonies. It was not until June 14, 1777 that the Second Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the first official national flag of the newly independent United States.

The current flag with 50 stars and 13 stripes was designed in 1958 by 17 year-old high school student Robert G. Heft (1941-2001), as Alaska and Hawaii were being considered for statehood.

Seth’s Sightings It seems like the $5 per gallon mark was a price too high. There has been a noticeable drop-off in traffic from last week. These are ridiculous prices, and diesel is crazier, all adding to higher costs of everything.

The U.S. Congress and our president needs stop all the talking and do what they can do about inflation (no blaming or finger-pointing, just concrete actions).

During our commuting this week, we had two bald eagle sightings, one at Judd Dam Hill coming from Weatherly, and another just north of Murphy’s Lumber near White Haven.

On Tuesday, we may have seen a golden eagle perched atop a tree by the

Turnpike (northbound from Lehighton) after a doctor’s visit.

In between our work and volunteering this past weekend, I managed to do some yard work to tame some of our bushes.

They have been enjoying the weird weather mix, branching out all over.

We’ve got a beautiful bloom on our mock orange, and are now getting both lilies and wild flowers.

I’ve added a begonia to the mix, planting it in a pot.

Ruth bought a beautiful hanging basket with a bunch of colorful flowers. At the office, I have gorgeous purple iris flowers, and a nice set of flowers on the rose bush.

During our cleanup around our house on Sunday, we found that deer had been up close to the house, so I’m taking an inventory of any flowers I may have lost. We also found a bear poop. Bear rarely come in close to where we live.

Last weekend’s Weatherly Hill Climb went off without much of a rain interruption, though with somewhat lower than normal numbers because of the high gas prices. Ruth and I worked at the Weatherly Library food sales stand on Sunday (featuring bleenies and halupki). Thanks to all who supported us.

On Sunday night, Ruth treated me to a belated birthday banana split at Heisler’s — out beyond Tamaqua. Sadly, it was raining by the time we arrived, not that I didn’t enjoy my treat…just not sitting out on a bench enjoying the scenery.

Coconut ice cream, cherry vanilla ice cream and Almond Joy ice cream topped bananas, and were topped with chocolate, nuts and pineapple…Ruth also bought the dogs a vanilla ice cream.

On our way home, we sighted a chicken house with a ol’ western town theme not far off the road. And it was evening worship time at the Mennonite Church in Lewiston Valley; every car in the parking lot was black.

On Saturday, we attended Crestwood’s graduation, pleasantly indoors in the Mohegan Sun Arena.

In sports, it’s going to be Tampa Bay vs. Colorado for the Stanley Cup.

I am somewhat curious about the new professional golf tour. It seems unrealistic that they choose to exercise an ‘our way or no way’ where the golfer is taking their time and money to play, while the new tour pays the golfers to appear up front, and then pays out additional prize money for good performance.

I watched the running of the Belmont Stakes. The race was exciting, with the winner and second place horses pacing a fast starter, and then passing at the end.

It turns out that not only were the horses from the same stable, but they were being ridden by brothers.

Rich Strike, the Kentucky Derby winner, finished well out of the running.

This weekend is the Tastes of Pennsylvania Wine Fest at Split Rock. There will be 27 wineries, a dozen food vendors, and two bands each day. Ruth and I plan to attend on Sunday.

Next weekend is Celtic Fest at the PA Renaissance Faire site. The always popular Scythian has a concert Friday night, then there’s two days of Celtic music, competitions and displays from all over the world.

Speaking of Celtics, the Boston Celtics are trying to keep pace with the Golden State Warriors in the NBA. Go Celtics.

Carbon County First Responders Expo is Thursday First Responders Expo of Carbon County: Get to Know Us! is being hosted by the Leadership Carbon Class of 2022.

I told a fib for 50 years and it made me famous

by Jerry Manning I remember the day. It was Monday, October 6, 1969.

I was a 4th grader living in Tennessee. All the guys in my class were talking about the same thing — what happened over the weekend, on Saturday specifically, in the first prime-time, nationally televised college football game. The Alabama Crimson Tide beat the Ole Miss Rebels 33-32, that night. But more importantly for me, Archie Manning’s performance made him famous (436 yards passing, two touchdowns, and 104 yards rushing). Archie made me famous, too.

Yes, my last name is Manning. At school that Monday, it seemed that everyone wanted to

know if I was his kin. Little did I know that I’d be asked the same question over and over again over the next 50plus years. And somewhere over those years, I fabricated a lie. “Archie Manning is my 3rd cousin, once removed, on my mother’s side,” I’d reply.

But, in truth, that couldn’t be possible. My mother’s family is not from the Manning line.

Besides, I’ve lived most of my life in Tennessee, and Archie’s family is from Mississippi. My fabrication was hardly believable, until his son Peyton signed with the Tennessee Vols.

Over the next four years, Peyton became a legend in Tennessee. Suddenly, my lie became believable. It became even more credible

when Peyton bought a house in my hometown!

But rather than fess up, I kept repeating the falsehood: “Peyton is my 3rd cousin, once removed, on my mother’s side.” Over the years, I’ve wondered just how many people have thought, “That can’t be true!”

I’m an introverted, private person, but I do have to admit that I’m proud to carry one of the most famous last names in sports. My only regret is that my wife and I didn’t name our only son Archie, Peyton, Eli, or Cooper. Nine Comets chosen for WVC boys’ lacrosse All-Star team Crestwood placed nine players on the 2022 Wyoming Valley Conference Boys’ Lacrosse All-Star Team, released last week by the WVC coaches. A first, second and honorable mention team were chosen by position, and players were selected based on a full field, with three attack, three defenders, offensive and defensive midfielders, long stick midfielder, goalie and face-off specialist.

Crestwood junior defensive mid Josh Hilpp earned first team honors for the Comets, who finished runner-up in District 2 Class 2A and reached the state tournament. Teammates Noah Schultz, a junior offensive mid, and senior defenders DJ Zimmerman and Evan Fey were named to the second team.

Baseball teams turning hot this summer

In the National League right now, there are no teams hotter than the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies. It took sub-.500 starts to their season for both clubs to start turning things around.

And for the Phillies, it took the firing of manager Joe Girardi earlier this month to shake things up.

Since that time, interim manager Rob Thomson guided the Phils to nine straight victories before the streak ended Sunday against Arizona. The Phillies regrouped to beat Miami on Monday, and at 31-30 are above .500 and back in the playoff picture. They were

just 2 1/2 games out of a wild card spot, with a long way to go this season.

As hot as the Phillies have been, their NL East rivals in Atlanta are hotter still.

On Monday, the defending World Series champion Braves downed Washington 9-5 for their 12th consecutive victory, going from 22-27 in the season’s first two months to 34-27, five games behind the front-running New York Mets in the East, but solidly in the playoffs as a wild card if the season were to end now. The Phillies are on their heels in third place.

Overall this season, there have been no teams better or more consistent than the teams in New York. The Yankees are running away with the AL East, leading

second-place Toronto by nine games, and owning the best record in baseball at 44-16. The Bronx Bombers are 26-7 at Yankee Stadium.

Meanwhile, the crosstown Mets have been the best in the NL all season, and at 39-22 are ahead of both the Braves and Phillies, and own the best record in the Senior Circuit.

TEEING IT UP - Money seems to be the driving force behind the breakaway LIV Golf Series.

The series is funded by Saudi Arabia, run by Greg Norman and publicized by Phil Mickelson, who spurned the PGA Tour and bolted for the new series along with stars like Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Sergio Garcia.

DeChambeau, who earlier this month said he was sticking with the PGA Tour,

did an about-face. He has called the move a business decision.

Of course, Mickelson, DeChambeau and others aren’t talking much about the elephant in the room: where the money is coming from. The league is financed by the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, a known terrorist nation.

The PGA Tour has suspended 17 players for competing in the rival series, and said those who compete in future LIV events face the same punishment. It is not yet known if they will face a lifetime ban from the PGA Tour.

To make things even more uncomfortable, those from both will be coming together this week in Brookline, Mass., for the U.S. Open.

Tournament officials said earlier they would allow all golfers to play in the major, at least for this year.

NBA FINALS - With my favorite team back in the NBA Finals and playing for a record 18th championship, I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on this year’s playoffs.

The Boston Celtics, collectively in the playoffs together for the first time, had a golden opportunity to take control of the backand-forth final series with Golden State. Their youth and inexperience on this stage has now put them one game from elimination.

Leading with just over five minutes remaining in a pivotal Game 5 in Boston, the Celtics started firing away from the perimeter, missing seven straight

3-point attempts down the stretch and wilting away in a 107-97 defeat. Three days later, on Monday night in San Francisco, the Warriors hit a buzzerbeating 3-pointer in the third quarter to take the lead, and pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 10494 victory. The Warriors entered Thursday night’s Game 6 in Boston with a 3-2 series lead.

While I’m not ruling out a Celtics comeback, as they have done so many times in this postseason, I think this group of Celtics is still learning how to win and close out games.

I hope I’m celebrating a Game 7 victory a few days from now, but I’m also looking to the future with this young group of players.

With Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Marcus Smart, and shot-blocking phenom Robert Williams III, the C’s have a strong nucleus for the future. With veteran big man Al Horford near the end of his career, and a generally weak bench, they’ll need to add some pieces in the offseason if the Celtics hope to be a championship contender on a regular basis.

THE SPRING VERSION OF THE WEATHERLY HILL CLIMB came off without a hitch on Saturday and Sunday, June 13 and 14. While storms threatened, rain held off until later Sunday evening, allowing all cars to finish their runs. Hillclimb Association president Joe Cyburt expressed appreciation to the borough and all who participated, noting that while he would have preferred to have double the number of drivers (74 this year), inflationary pressures probably kept some away.

“It’s an expensive hobby,” he noted.

INFLATIONARY PRESSURES did not seem to impact the community groups who provided food for drivers and spectators. Many of the stands sold out before the end of racing on Sunday.
