Carbon County has a new hospital Photos & story by Seth Isenberg

Lehigh Valley Hospital – Carbon president Christine Biege, with the scissors, had the honor of cutting the ribbon for the area’s newest hospital. In her remarks, she said: “Great health care involves more than brick and mortar, the latest technology, or access to services and specialists. Great health care starts with people. Friend caring for friend. Neighbor caring for neighbor. Our pledge is that you will find exception health care here at LVH-Carbon.”

Carbon County has a new hospital. On June 6, the Lehigh Valley Health Network opened Lehigh Valley Hospital–Carbon west of Lehighton on Route 443, just west of the shopping district. The ribbon was cut for the project, followed by tours of the building. The 100,587 square foot building features a 16 bed emergency room, a 20 bed in-patient floor with stateof-the-art telemedicine technology (and some wonderful views out the windows), two high-tech operating rooms (see page 3), surgical suites See NEW HOSPITAL, page 4

At the special meeting of the Weatherly Area School Board June 15, a motion to raise taxes to fund the proposed $15,754,839 budget for 2022-23 in part through a 1.1 mill tax increase and the rest by taking $185,699 from the district’s remaining fund balance was voted down, 5 to 3. Opposed were April Walters, Thomas Connors, Chrissie Houser, Ken Jacoby III, and Christy Minor. Members Nancy Mulvaney, Barbara Sipler and Matt Von Frisch voted in favor. Member William Knepper was absent. Connors next made a motion to approve the budget with no tax increase. That vote was approved unanimously. The new budget will have a $330,439 deficit, and will use the fund balance to cover it. Member Von Frisch explained that the budget has $100,000 added to cover the higher cost of fuel. He also noted that this budget uses up all of the American Recovery Act

money to cover general operations — $500,000. The Board also approved the ’22 Homestead/Farmstead Exclusion resolution. There was a split vote on approving the coaches list for the coming school year, with members April Walters, Thomas Connors and Chrissie Houser voting no, and Ken Jacoby III, Christy Minor, Nancy Mulvaney, Barbara Sipler and Matt Von Frisch voting in favor. Connors, after the meeting, explained that he objected to some big increases given to some of the coaches. On the 5-3 vote, the coaches were approved, along with their stipends and volunteers. The list appears at the end of this story. In other business, the Board approved use of school facilities by the Weatherly Varsity Cheerleaders for a fundraiser on June 18; and by the Music Department for an Instrument Rental Information See WASB, page 3
